A Wish List for ‘Alan Wake 2’

Last month, Remedy decided to show off one of several Alan Wake 2 prototypes they made back in 2010 when the studio first started thinking about turning their supernatural thriller into a series. It’s a fascinating thing to watch since footage like that normally doesn’t leave the hands of its developer.

It was a rare glimpse into the pre-pre-production stage of a game that hadn’t even been greenlit. Unfortunately, it was also a reminder of what could’ve been, had Microsoft given it a chance.

Apparently, the folks at Microsoft aren’t familiar with the horror genre’s track record when it comes to the first sequel in a series. The history of this splendid genre is lousy with stellar sequels, most of which managed to outshine their predecessors. Remedy doesn’t even need to try, the hard part’s been done. Silent Hill 2, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, Dead Space 2, Resident Evil 2, Condemned 2: Bloodshot, Dino Crisis 2 and System Shock 2 have paved the way, all Alan Wake 2 needs to do is walk it.

Legend has it if you line up used copies of each of these games under a starless sky, Hideo Kojima will descend from an amber moon to reveal the formula for the perfect sequel.

Intrigued? Now forget those last two paragraphs because it’s time to get all up on this wish list.
