NECA Reveals Jason Figure Based On Abysmal 1989 Game

I never got around to playing the NES game based on the Friday the 13th franchise, mostly because I was one year-old and that sort of game isn’t appropriate for anyone under three. Probably for the best, because I’ve since heard that it’s not all that fun to play. One year-old Adam wouldn’t have approved of those poorly conceived dodge mechanics, I can guarantee you that.

To me, the most controversial thing about it is Jason, who happens to be sporting a purple jumpsuit and neon blue mask. Jason can’t pull off those colors, he’s strictly a brown and grey sort of fellow. I fully support throwing in a muted green here and there to mix things up, but blue and purple? No sir. I’d say this guy is best left in the past, so as to keep that neon vomit away from the general public. It would seem the fine folks at NECA would disagree.

Mother’s Day is upon us and, perhaps more than any other holiday, you’re going to need some movie suggestions. After all, Mom wants to hang out, right? Showing her Mother’s Day is sort of like ordering her an E-card that morning, it shows you’re not putting too much thought into it.

We’ve got some choice recommendations here. From the old (Psycho, you’ll find out inside) to the new (Mama, which just came out today on Blu-ray/DVD), there’s something in here for everyone.

[Random Cool] Never Before Seen ‘Friday the 13th’ (2009) Concept Art!

Can you believe it’s been around four years since the 2009 Friday the 13th remake hit theaters? Jason Voorhees is once again M.I.A., and that sucks.

While we dream of seeing him slicing and dicing on the big screen once again, remake writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, who also penned Freddy vs. Jason, shared the following never-before-seen production sketch of the infamous slasher, whom would be played by genre fav Derek Mears.

Jason Voorhees concept art by Christopher Shy, commissioned by Marcus Nispel. Beautiful,” the duo explain.

As bizarre as it sounds, the remake only took in $65M after plummeting in its second week of release. The worldwide gross was an unimpressive $91M, which could explain why a sequel has never been greenlit. READ MORE

5 Underrated Horror Movies!!!

Time heals all things. For me, this rings especially true of film criticism and the public’s assessment of a film’s quality. When John Carpenter’s The Thing was released in 1982, it was rejected by audiences and critics alike. Meanwhile, MGM’s remake of The Amityville Horror grossed well over $100M worldwide upon its release in 2005. Who has even seen that movie in the past 7 years?

To that end, there are a few films whose legacies and merit I feel deserve some modicum of reconsideration. I’m not saying I’ve picked 5 movies that are secretly The Thing level of quality – none of them are THAT good. But I still think that these are deserving films that got short shrift. They’re the epitome of “underrated.”

[Modern Art] These Horror Movie Killers Would Look Great On My Wall

If I had to make a list of the top four horror movie killers, it’d include Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Pinhead. Ghostface comes in at a close fifth place, and of course there’s Chucky, Leatherface, Jigsaw, Hannibal Lecter — err, this isn’t the point. Deviant Artist Chris Fulton has done a fantastic job capturing their murderous charm, which I don’t find all that surprising after seeing his amazing Silent Hill art. After the break I have five of the top horror movie killers, and the mystery killer is quite possibly the most death-obsessed of them all.

[R.I.P.] Richard Brooker (1954 – 2013)

Some sad news today as Richard Brooker, the very first Jason to ever wear a Hockey Mask, has passed away at the age of 58. Having portrayed Mr. Voorhees in Steve Miner’s Friday The 13th: Part 3, Brooker went onto another acting role in 1983′s Deathstalker before moving on to a career as a horse trainer.

As a child, Brooker was definitely in my nightmares. That shot of him as Jason, looking through the window and smiling at our heroine in the canoe in the middle of the lake… for whatever reason it was one of the more indelibly frightening moments of my childhood.

Head inside to watch the scene, and to pay tribute to him outside of the mask as well. READ MORE

10 Top “Cabin In The Woods” Movies!!!

Evil Dead Month marches on here at Bloody-Disgusting! One of the most important aspects of the Evil Dead films (sans Army Of Darkness of course), is the cabin they take place in. Having seen the new remake, I can verify that the aesthetic and layout are more or less the same as they were in the first two films of the original trilogy. Of course, while they may be the pinnacle of the “Cabin In The Woods” subgenre – there’s a sh*t ton more where that came from!

These kind of films are among my favorite in horror, I love a good rural setting. So I’m almost jealous that The Wolfman (@TheWolfmanCometh – on the boards) got the idea for this list – which he wrote – first!

There always seems to be an understadable amount of confusion whenever I post a story from “The Wolfman.” It’s NOT ME you should be praising (or bashing) in the comments, IT’S HIM! So head inside for The Wolfman’s 10 Top “Cabin In The Woods” Movies!!! READ MORE

5 Horror Sequels We’d Love To See!!!

Not all sequels are welcome, seeing as many of them besmirch some of our otherwise favorite films and/or franchises. Most of the time we can count on franchises to burn themselves out anyway. Freddy’s Dead and Jason Goes To Hell were never really on anyone’s wish list, were they? Are you really glad you saw Seed Of Chucky or do you think that Child’s Play might be better regarded today if it had remained a standalone film?

Still, there are a few amazing films out there that remain un-sequelized. Don’t get me wrong – I recognize that it’s almost a mathematical impossibility for any of these proposed sequels to supersede the quality of the originals – I’m merely talking about a few follow-ups that we’d simply have to go see, despite the inevitable promise of disappointment. Alas, every single one of these (save for one) is a fantasy pipe dream.

5 Top Horror Final Girls!!!

By The Wolfman (@TheWolfmanCometh – on the boards).

There’s yet to be a Webster’s Dictionary entry for the term “Final Girl” but, as you all know, the Final Girl is typically the last female to survive. She doesn’t have to live, she just has to be the last one. She’s the girl who refuses to be just another victim and actively fights back against whatever force is killing off everyone she knows. I’d say that out of all possible female roles in a horror film, it’s the role of Final Girl that’s most coveted.

Even though there are quite a few actresses famous for being a Final Girl, I’d like to point out that there’s a difference between a Final Girl and a “Scream Queen.” A Scream Queen is an actress who has gained fame and notoriety for her frequent appearances in horror. I wanted to make sure to add the distinction between a Final Girl and a Scream Queen because – spoiler alert – Jamie Lee Curtis will not be found on this list. The entries here are women who have fought back against whatever it was that was after them in hopes of vanquishing their foes. Jamie Lee Curtis is generally considered a Final Girl for surviving her encounters with Michael Myers in the original Halloween, but other than poking her brother in the eye with a coat hanger, what did she actually do to survive the night? Run around? Hide in a closet? Had it not been for Dr. Loomis shooting Michael, Laurie would be dead. Similarly, Marilyn Burns from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre also won’t be found below, sinceStill here? Good! all she did was run through the woods for what seemed like hours after her captors tied some horrible knots.

Still here? Good! Head inside for my Top 5 Final Girls!!! READ MORE

[Editorial] The Wolfman Takes On Remakes!!

By The Wolfman (@TheWolfmanCometh – on the boards).

You’re sitting there in the movie theater with your Junior Mints, or in the case of psychopaths, sitting there with Dots, waiting for the movie to start. You have a terrifying debate with yourself for ten seconds while you try to determine whether the lights in the theater are actually dimming or maybe you’re having a stroke. Once that bright green screen pops up, proving that your brain does indeed have enough oxygen, you catch a glimpse of some of Hollywood’s newest garbage. Between romantic comedies and animated adventures starring pop singers, it all looks like the same old stuff. Unexpectedly, a trailer pops up that seems to be pretty creepy, have some decent actors in it, and the credits tell you it’s from people who helped make other horror movies that you absolutely love. When the title is revealed, the entire audience groans, followed by nudging the person next to you and saying, “Can you believe they’re even making that movie?” Or maybe you went to this movie alone and angrily took out your phone to post your disdain on Twitter for everyone (read: not really anyone) to see. No folks, the title didn’t reveal that the trailer you just enjoyed was an M. Night Shyamalan joint, but instead, the movie is a remake, adaptation of, or sequel to something else. No matter what the source material is, nothing seems to cause fanboys to angrily roll their eyes more then finding out their favorite movie/book is getting a remake/adaptation/sequel. My advice to all of you is to quit your complaining about something you had absolutely no involvement in making and should focus your energy on revisiting the source material.

5 Incredibly Painful Death Scenes!!!

Talk about a topic that could last forever! Horror fans of course crave great stories, strong characters, potent scares and snappy dialogue – but it’s the vast array of demises that really glue the whole thing together. Some deaths are quick, some are long. Some are funny, others are brutally dour. Then there’s the ones that really make you wince.

WIth that in mind I wanted to take a look at a few death scenes that really make you sit up and say, ” things may be bad with me right now, but at least I’m not that guy!” Stuff where you just kind of have to squirm a little bit, not because it’s super gory necessarily (though it could be), but because it looks so damn uncomfortable. Knowing that this could be an ongoing thing, I wanted to start off a bit broad. This isn’t the final word on the matter, this is only the beginning. At least one of these isn’t even from a horror movie – but that doesn’t mean that the character gets off the hook with any less suffering.

5 Favorite ‘Friday The 13th’ Characters!!!

Let’s face it, the Friday The 13th franchise isn’t exactly known for great writing, outstanding performances, thematic heft, arcs, or anything that would remotely constitute an olive branch to the non-horror fan. But that doesn’t mean the moves are without merit! I’m a nut for the franchise (which you can probably tell by my ranking of the franchise) and, even aside from the kills, there’s plenty to like!

Just because the series isn’t known for its great characters doesn’t mean that there’s not a handful of characters and performances that rise above the rest.

[OMFG] Warner Bros. Now Owns Paramount’s ‘Friday the 13th’ Library.

It was announced last week that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has gained exclusive rights to physical Blu-ray and DVD distribution of more than 600 Paramount catalog titles (Paramount keeps VOD rights). While nothing major was announced, horror fans have been in a frenzy hoping that we’ll now see that Friday the 13th Blu-ray box set we’ve been demanding.

Daniel Farrands, producer of the absolutely incredible A Nightmare on Elm Street documentary “Never Sleep Again,” already has inside word from Warners regarding the future of the Friday franchise: “It’s confirmed that Warner Bros. DID acquire the F13th titles from Paramount,” Farrands states on his Facebook page. “But they haven’t yet decided whether they will release a full Blu-ray box set or simply release “one offs” of each title.

What’s exciting is that we can now have one solid set that contains Friday the 13th through Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan alongside Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X and Freddy vs. Jason!

Knowing how the home video whores work, we’ll see individually remastered versions first followed by that well-deserved box set. If you thought the Elm Street box set was worth the wait, then this should be exciting news. I still think distributors are getting lazy with their extra features. Something as big as Friday the 13th deserves major features. One can only hope we’ll one day see the versions that weren’t destroyed by the MPAA.

10 Great Jump Scares in Horror!

The thing about revisiting jump scares is, they’re just never quite as effective the second (or third, or fourth, or ninetieth) time around. So when putting together this list, I made a point of seeking out the ones that a) still have an effect on me, even after repeat viewings; b) boast some level of real craftsmanship beyond just “aahh! it’s dark! and there’s a cat! jumping!”; c) stick in the mind long after the initial scare has come and gone; and/or d) display some combination of the above traits.

So what did I come up with at the end of it all? Check out my final ten below, then log your own picks in the comments. READ MORE
