[BD Review] The Flaws And Glory Of ‘Prometheus’, For Those Who Have Seen The Film Only

You’ve already read Brad’s review and checked out David Harley’s thoughts on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, the quasi-Alien prequel that’s now in theaters.

The film is proving to be a commercial hit, having made $21 million dollars on Friday alone. This means a lot of you have likely seen it and are ready to talk about specific events within it, along with what works in the film and what doesn’t. So here’s where my review comes in. It’s full of spoilers and even points out a lot of things that don’t work in the film, but ultimately is certainly favorable. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I’d recommend fixing that before you read this.

This may read like a bad review at this point, but I actually really like the movie. In fact, I almost love it. But an honest assessment of the film has to acknowledge its shortcomings if I’m going to expect you guys (or myself) to buy into any of this.

I would love a discussion with you guys about this and I obviously welcome all dissenting comments. So please head inside for the review and feel free to comment or yell or whatever. And, as always, make sure to write your own review as well! READ MORE

[Video Interview] Damon Lindelof On What Makes Good Science Fiction And The Difference Between ‘Alien’ And ‘Prometheus’

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus opens in US theaters today and I’m suggesting you find the biggest and best screen you can to see it on. I’m posting my spoiler heavy review (for discussion purposes) later today and I urge you to read it only if you’ve seen the movie. It’s sort of a post-viewing “let’s talk.” In the meantime, you can check out Brad’s spoiler light review.

I’ve already posted an interview with Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender and my chats with Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Logan Marshall-Green. And yesterday we had a longer one on one with Ridley Scott.

Today’s interview is with Damon Lindelof and he gets in to the genesis of the project and where in the process he came onboard. He also discusses the questions the film asks (some are answered and some aren’t) and how Prometheus differs from Alien. I also have a more spoilery interview with Lindelof in which we go into greater detail on some of the film’s surprises. That’s something that will probably hit Monday.

With ‘Prometheus,’ Scott creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Prometheus is now playing. Head inside to check out the interview (and beware of mild spoilers I suppose). READ MORE

[Video Interview] Sir Ridley Scott On The Intermingling Of Science And Religion In ‘Prometheus’, Its Potential Sequel And ‘Alien: Paradise’

Update: We’ve included an exclusive clue (#4 out of 15) to help you unlock a Prometheus viral map. Check it out below the video.

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is only a couple of days away from its US release and I highly recommend it. You may have just read David Harley’s review – which makes many good points – but I liked it more than he did. My opinion of it is somewhere in the 8/10 range of Brad’s review. I also can’t stress enough how much you shouldn’t be expecting something similar to Alien. Prometheus is its own movie and its best to approach it on those terms (and let the Alien elements be bonus points along the way). I’m posting my spoiler heavy review (for discussion purposes) late tomorrow after the film’s US release. In the meantime, I’m continuing with our exclusive video interviews.

Today’s interview is with Ridley Scott himself, who I spoke to in London last week. We talk at length about the ideas and themes in the film, and also touch a bit on what the tone of the sequel might be (if it happens). Scott is a verbose, thoughtful man and I recommend giving him 6 or so minutes of your undivided attention.

With ‘Prometheus,’ Scott creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

I’ve already posted an interview with Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender as well as my chats with Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Logan Marshall-Green. Also, over the next few days I’ll be posting two separate pieces with Damon Lindelof. Prometheus opens in the US on June 8th (click here for Brad’s spoiler light review). There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.” Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris and Guy Pearce all star.

The IMAX release of Prometheus will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX 3D Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. [Video Interview] Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce And Logan Marshall-Green On ‘Prometheus’

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is only a couple of days away from its US release and I highly recommend it. I also recommend that you treat it as a unique new film rather than an Alien movie so you have a chance to be pleasantly surprised. As I continue to work on my spoiler heavy review (which I’m posting for discussion purposes right after the film’s US release), I’m unloading a few more exclusive video interviews.

Today we have Charlize Theron (Meredith Vickers) and Guy Pearce (Peter Weyland), as well as a separate interview with Logan Marshall-Green (who plays Charlie Holloway). It was an interesting challenge to interview both Theron and Pearce without spoiling anything – something that will be clear once you’ve seen the film – so we stick to lighter territory although Theron does give some interesting insight into her character. Green also has some cool thoughts about his character’s somewhat antagonistic relationship with Michael Fassbender’s David.

[Random Cool] Watch The Entire ‘Prometheus’ Trailer… Made Out Of Paper!

Considering we have a gazillion interviews and reviews to run, I was trying my absolute damnedest not to cram additional stories featuring Ridley Scott’s Prometheus down your collective throats. Fortunately for you, this one is awesome.

Travis Betz, a very good friend of Bloody, and director of the incredible indies Joshua and Lo, created a paper trailer for the Alien prequel that has gone viral since Twentieth Century Fox embraced it online. “This video is made out of 100% paper,” Betz jokingly promises.

We’ve already posted one review for the flick opening in theaters this Friday. Despite some flaws, I’ve seen Ridley Scott’s Prometheus twice now and I really like it. As I continue to work on my spoiler heavy review (which I’m posting for discussion purposes right after the film’s US release), I’m unloading some exclusive content for you guys. First up is my video interview with Noomi Rapace (Elizabeth Shaw) and Michael Fassbender (David).

I think it’s appropriate that these two are paired together, since their characters in Prometheus kind of take opposing sides of one of the film’s central arguments.

[BD Review] ‘Prometheus’ A Pseudo-Classic That Delivers…Awe Mixed With Breathtaking VFX!

While Evan continues to unload the handfuls of exclusive content from our interviews with the entire cast and crew, I’ve already posted my relatively spoiler-free (where otherwise noted) review of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, an impressive outing for the first of a planned new trilogy that’s to bridge to Scott’s infamous 1978 Alien.

“Prometheus is a visually striking sci-fi epic that delivers an incredible sense of awe mixed with breathtaking visual effects… Even with some pacing issues and questionable creative choices, Prometheus in an iconic sci-fi spectacle that will forever be remembered as a pseudo-classic.” Click the title above for the entire review.

We have reviews also forthcoming from both Evan and David Harley, not to mention all of yours. Based on what I’ve seen on Rotten Tomatoes and Twitter, I am expecting an extremely heated debate. The real question for me is as follows: what will we all think of the film come 2013?

In theaters Friday, “Scott creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

[Interview] Noomi Rapace On Injuries, Ridley Scott Heroines And ‘Prometheus’

Noomi Rapace’s character of Elizabeth Shaw is the heart and soul of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. The film’s expedition is based on her craving to know what’s out there. And as far as the film’s themes are concerned, her character and Michael Fassbender’s David play polar opposite sides of the argument.

Myself and a few other journalists sat down with Rapace last week in London and spoke with her about the physical nature of her role (and the injuries she accumulated from it). We also talked about the Shaw’s intrinsic curiosity and what it’s like to be the latest Ridley Scott heroine.

[Interview] Charlize Theron On Unloved Characters And The Epic Sets Of ‘Prometheus’

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is a film that’s in many ways about the relationship between the creator and the created, and Charlize Theron’s character Meredith Vickers is an important part of that puzzle.

[Official Review] Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’

Say what you will about Prometheus, it’s still guaranteed to be this summer’s blockbuster that will cause Twitter to light afire and have fans standing outside the theater talking about it for hours. It’s extremely high concept in a way that it will alienate half the audience, while the other half will snarkily approach it with the “I’ve already read about this” mindset. In short, I expect harsh criticism. Much like Prometheus, I’ll stand outside the circle and approach this with an open mind.

Since its inception a few years back, director Ridley Scott, and writers Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof have firmly attempted to separate the film from Scott’s breakthrough sci-fi horror Alien. While insiders continued to push that this was in fact a prequel to the 1979 classic, also directed by Scott, the filmmakers stood firm only teasing that Prometheus had the “DNA” of an Alien film. They will be redeemed by the time the end credits roll. For once, they weren’t lying.

Briefly summarizing the deep, thought-provoking plot, Prometheus opens with an alien creature standing on Earth, drinking something from a cup, and then melting into a water supply that quickly transforms into cells and DNA molecules. Is this the creation of man? It cuts to Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) making a life-changing discovery in a cave in Ireland. As teased in the TV spots and trailers, the couple proposes that man was created by an alien species and that these aliens have invited us to visit their planet – to meet our maker so to speak. They join the motley crew – David (Michael Fassbender), Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron), Janek (Idris Elba) and a few others – assembled by Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce), whom spends 1 trillion space dollars to fly the Prometheus ship to this unknown planet mapped on the cave walls. Once there, (some) questions are (vaguely) answered as chaos erupts.

Without giving anything away – which is extremely difficult – the ideas presented are quite anti-Hollywood. What I mean by this is that Hollywood (executives, filmmakers) likes stories to be told in formula and to be overbearingly clear. Prometheus is anti-Hollywood in the sense that Scott and co. tell the story the way they want to tell it without any care as to whether or not theater patrons will understand. It sticks firm and will gladly take criticism.

We are all constantly screaming for originality in film; that’s what was delivered. And while some of us may already be aware of such “big” creation conspiracy theories through stories like Erich von Daniken‘s 1968 “Chariots of the Gods?” or TV shows such as “Ancient Aliens,” those unaware will literally be blown away by the mind-bending story. It’s such a massive idea that many viewers will be immediately alienated either through confusion or by not actually understanding the events that occurred. Of course, everyone will claim to understand (God forbid anyone can be honest and just be like, “enlighten me”)…

Without getting into the real meaning of the movie (it’s impossible to examine without an onslaught of spoilers, but watching David Lean’s 1962 masterpiece Lawrence of Arabia is a good start), the relationship between man and alien, and man and android are juxtaposed. There are many themes touched upon from creation to religion (Shaw wears a cross around her neck even though they know they were created by an alien species; “who created them?” she asks) to playing God, and thankfully none of it is thrown in the viewers face. But what’s so incredibly impressive is how cohesive Lindeloff and Spaihts’ screenplay is considering the high concentration of complex themes.

Digressing a bit, and moving away from the “ideas”, the scope is equally as massive. Prometheus is a visually striking sci-fi epic that delivers an incredible sense of awe mixed with breathtaking visual effects. The 3-D effects work is mind blowing, adding various levels of depth while also toying with some new 3-D concepts (such as holographic imagery and real-life recordings). The ships, planets, costumes and structural designs are nothing short of Oscar worthy, as is the score. There’s even a gorgeous mix of CGI with miniatures and even what appeared to be claymation?! While just as venomous, the newly imagined creatures will be recognizable, but are unique to this universe.

(Spoiler Warning) Speaking of recognizable, the highlight of the film comes in a shocking moment when Shaw must give herself a C-section to remove an alien from her stomach. And while this sequence will go down in infamy, unfortunately, the rest of film struggles to deliver the same impact. The third act is a bit muddled, and ultimately won’t be “finite” enough for some readers. The biggest complaint expected is that Scott never truly bridges Prometheus to Alien. It should be recalled, though, that the intention is for this to be a trilogy. (Spoiler End)

Even with some pacing issues and questionable creative choices (such as the quasi-zombie guy shown in the trailer) Prometheus in an iconic sci-fi spectacle that will forever be remembered as a pseudo-classic. But to be more than clear: don’t expect to see an Alien film. We celebrated when James Cameron, instead of rehashing Alien, told his own story with Aliens; expect more of the same with Scott’s new vision. Prometheus should be accepted as a standalone sci-fi thriller that has the DNA of Alien — and will proudly push AVP and AVP:R off your video shelf for good.

[Interview] Sir Ridley Scott On Technology, Prequels And How ‘Alien: Paradise’ Became ‘Prometheus’

I’ve seen Ridley Scott’s Prometheus twice now and I like it quite a bit. It’s not without its issues, but I think it’s an interesting, inquisitive and intense movie that’s full of questions (if not so many answers).

Myself and a few other journalists sat down with Scott a few days ago in London to talk about the journey of Prometheus to the screen. We also touch on a question a lot of people are asking, “why does the technology in this film look different than in ‘Alien’?” Scott also discussed his original plans for the film (back when it was titled Alien: Paradise).

[Interview] Michael Fassbender On Playing An Android And Working With Ridley Scott On ‘Prometheus’

One of the best things about Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is Michael Fassbender’s performance as the ship’s resident android, David. You’re never quote sure where the robot’s programming ends and his own sentience begins (if at all).

Myself and a few other journalists sat down with Fassbender yesterday in London to grill him about his role. I found him to be a highly intelligent, engaging and funny interview. We spoke at great length about Prometheus and whether or not he felt like he had to study up on “Ash” from Alien and “Bishop” from Aliens.

[Reaction] Initial Thoughts On ‘Prometheus’, Expectations And The Baggage You Might Bring Into It

As much as I feel people are too sensitive with their definition of the word “spoiler”, I haven’t included any below so feel free to read safely. No plot details or descriptions of any kind are included. This is also not my official review – that’s coming later.

If anyone has a right to attempt a prequel (or any kind of related film) to Alien, it’s Ridley Scott. And make no mistake, Prometheus is very much in that universe and shares more than “strands of DNA” with that film. However, it’s also very much its own movie and the ideas it’s concerned with aren’t very similar to the ideas explored within Alien. If that statement doesn’t make much sense now, I’m betting that it will after you’ve seen the movie.

I’ll get into all of this in more detail when my review hits in a few days, but I want to talk a bit about expectations first. I’ve seen Prometheus once (I’m seeing it again in a few hours so I can clarify my thoughts) and it’s a film that I like quite a bit. I’d go so far as to say that it’s “really good”. Like most films (and it’s better than most films), it’s not perfect. Normally I wouldn’t even bring this sort of thing up ahead of my review, but I feel that for the past six months many of you have been expecting a perfect film – something that equals Alien. It’s not your fault, the film is asking to be viewed through this lens.

But I’d encourage you not to. I’d encourage you to treat it as a new film and not bring a massive amount of baggage into the theater with you. Not everything in the movie works, but it’s gorgeous, intense and has some genuinely shocking and great moments. It can also claim great performances from Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Noomi Rapace. I’ve heard some people complain that these characters are thinly drawn, but I certainly felt I knew enough about them to get what makes them tick.

Prometheus also has a lot of ideas and raises a lot of questions, questions that (by design) it doesn’t always answer. In that sense, it truly is its own cool sci-fi film and not an Alien film. It helps to be open to Scott’s desire to explore new territory within this framework. What doesn’t help is to expect an out-of the-box masterpiece, because many of you won’t find it to be that. But if you can get excited about Prometheus as an intense and interesting new movie – you’re in luck. I’m not asking you to turn off your brain or to disengage from critical thinking, I just think it might work better for you on an even playing field.

Prometheus opens on June 8th. We have a lot of interviews in the pipeline for you – starting with Michael Fassbender today at 3PM PST.

['Aliens' Revisited] The Perfect Sequel, Just As Good As Its Predecessor In Completely Different Ways

With the June 8th release of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus fast approaching, we thought we’d take a look back at the original Alien franchise with which it “shares strands of DNA.” Whether or not there are xenomorphs as we know them in Prometheus, it’s abundantly clear that it takes place in the same universe.

In the weeks leading up to the release of that film I’m going to revisit the four films in the Alien franchise (sorry, not going to subject myself to AVP) in order to gather my thoughts in anticipation of the new outing. Last week I revisited Alien: Resurrection and absolutely hated it. The week before that I revisited Alien 3 and discovered a lot to like.

Now we come down to the two titans in the series, and this week I’m taking another look at Aliens. This is one of my favorite movies and I bet it’s one of yours as well. But what makes it tick? And is it better than Alien?

Let’s talk more inside. READ MORE
