Climax Reveals The Myriad Ways ‘Shattered Memories’ Messed With Us

Climax Studios, the developer behind Silent Hill Origins, Shattered Memories, and possibly another horror game has taken to Facebook to reveal the many techniques Shattered Memories employed to get inside the player’s head. Apparently, the psychological tests were only the tip of the iceberg — on top of that, it monitored every decision we made, route we chose, how long it took for us to solve a puzzle, etc. and used that data to try and mess with us. It’s actually really impressive. Learn all about it after the break.

This ‘Silent Hill 2′ Nurse Figure Is Something I Want Badly

Just look at those boots. This reminds me of a line from the Nancy Sinatra classic, ‘These boots were made for stalking, stalking your ass through the foggy streets of Silent Hill’ …or something like that.

I’m not sure if they started off red or were slowly dyed crimson after each victim, but who cares? Toymunkey revealed a fancy new addition to Gecco’s gorgeous line of Silent Hill figures. No details yet regarding their U.S. release, but this lovely new Bubble Head Nurse will become available in Japan in July for a paltry ¥9,800 (about $100), so we can hope they’ll make it here sometime soon after. Get a better look at her after the break.

Every ‘Silent Hill’ Ranked Worst To Best!

We haven’t been receiving many post cards from our favorite foggy resort town — at least not since Book of Memories released last October — so to keep me from experiencing Silent Hill withdrawal I’ve decided to do the impossible. Okay, I suppose ranking every game in Konami’s longstanding survival horror series is far from an impossible feat, but it sure was difficult ranking games I’ve grown up with over the years. Even if all of you violently disagree with me and come at me, torches and pitchforks in hand, this was still worth it, even if it was only to grant me a brief reprieve from the shakes, sweats and fever that come from not at least talking about Silent Hill.

See how I rank each game in this awesome horror franchise after the jump, and feel free to offer your own list in the comments!

[Modern Art] Pyramid Head Is A Total Beefcake In This ‘Silent Hill’ Fan Art

I just had an idea: Pyramid Head pin-up calendar. Someone get on that.

After the break I have some amazing Silent Hill fan art by Deviant Artist Chris Fulton, who has managed to capture Pyramid Head in all his gym rat glory. Now I can’t help but picture him stuffing raw eggs and protein shakes into the holes in his helmet and trying to impress the nurses by doing curl-ups with his freakishly long sword.

Is Climax Working On A Horror Game Set In A Dollhouse?

It’s all conjecture, but judging by the images Climax Studios — the dev behind Silent Hill: Origins and Shattered Memories — has been trickling out via their Facebook page, it looks like their next game may be of the horror persuasion… and maybe set in a dollhouse. I can see it, dollhouses are creepy.

Now, it’s “unannounced” so for all we know this could be a post-apocalyptic Barbie adventure game. It has a nebulous ’2013′ release window, so my guess is they’re waiting to announce it at E3, but I could be wrong, the reveal could be a ways off. Check out some images (not sure if they’re screenshots, promotional art, concept art, or none of the above) after the jump.

6 Downsides To Being A Horror Gamer!

I’ve been a horror fan for most of my life. When my friends were doing whatever it is kids do outside, I was in my room exploring the foggy streets of Silent Hill, or being mercilessly picked on by SHODAN. The atmosphere, monsters, music — I instantly fell in love with it all. Over the years my love for this genre has grown, and so has the list of things I’ve grown to dislike about being a horror gamer.

I’ve compiled a short list of things that have soured my experience as a horror fan over the years, check them out after the break.

[Modern Art] If Dr. Seuss Created ‘Evil Dead,’ ‘Silent Hill’ And ‘BioShock,’ They’d Look Something Like This

Who doesn’t love Dr. Seuss? Nazis, that’s who. His vibrant and imaginative art and stories pretty much defined my childhood. That and Friday the 13th marathons. Yeah, I was a strange kid. Speaking of strange, I can’t believe how natural these covers look. Even Pyramid Head looks less rapey.

The Internet can be a spectacular source for delightfully strange art, and these covers — designed by Australian artist DrFaustusAU — are a prime example of this. Check them out after the break.

This is a story almost too terrible to tell.

Nah, I’m not talking about the closing moments of Silent Hill 2 (although, let’s face it, that was all pretty grim, wasn’t it?). I’m talking about the tragedy that is the once much-anticipated Silent Hill: HD Collection.

Can You Name Every Horror Game In These Minimalist Posters?

I want to play a game. (read that in Jigsaw’s voice)

I have a bunch of minimalist horror game posters waiting for you after the break. What I’d like you to do is try and name every game in these posters just by looking at the gallery. Don’t click on any of the images, because doing that will expand them, revealing the full poster and the title of the game. This game is crazy easy to cheat on, but I trust you. So name as many games as you can in the comments below — Bloody Disgusting has spies everywhere, so I’ll know when you cheat — and HAVE FUN!

6 VERY Disturbing Moments In Video Games!

Video games have introduced us to some extremely memorable scenes over the years. We’ve seen a creature with a giant metal tetrahedron helmet take time away from stalking us so he could rape a mannequin, then it was our turn to be violated by a crazed psychic woman. When video games aren’t treating us like pieces of meat, they’re exploring other paths to cause us even deeper psychological damage. Here are six games that managed just that.

‘Silent Hill: Book Of Memories’ Gets Costumes And A Patch

Today, Konami’s portable experiment Silent Hill: Book of Memories has received a patch based on player feedback that will greatly improve how it plays. No longer will you be penalized for dying during a stage, instead, the stage will restart with your character’s progress intact. A few other tweaks have been made, including less punishing poison traps. Also available today is DLC that brings with it new weapons, forsaken rooms, notes, and doubles the cast of characters, including fan favorites Heather Mason and James Sunderland.

I don’t have the game, mostly because I don’t own a Vita. Anyone here interested in trying the new-and-improved Book of Memories?

10 Worst Horror Exposition Monologues!!!

Often times, a horror film has to take a moment or two to finally explain what’s been going on the whole movie. These exposition scenes are almost always eye-rollingly long and drawn out.

Not every film can have Richard Dreyfuss show up and offer a just perfect amount of information with a great performance. Sometimes you have to listen to Tony Todd pontificate instead.

Silent Hill and Resident Evil are synonymous with survival horror. Or at least they used to be. In recent years both have felt the backlash from longtime fans as they grow increasingly disenchanted with the contrasting direction in which the franchises are heading.

Woman Covers Silent Hill And Animals As Leaders On Celtic Harp

YouTube user Mashuggah Halcyon, who hails from Russia, is a multi-instrumentalist who has uploaded videos of her covering various songs, both video game related and from the metal genre. They’re rather incredible as she plays these pieces with near effortless grace (while wearing a metal shirt). Particularly, her cover of Animals As Leaders‘ “On Impulse” gives the song a completely different feel, almost as though it belongs in a Legend Of Zelda game. Also, her covers of Silent Hill 1′s “Not Tomorrow” and Silent Hill 2′s “Promise (Reprise)” are fantastic.

‘Revelations’ Releases On DVD Soon, Let’s Ignore It In Favor Of Some Amazing ‘Silent Hill’ Cosplay

The latest video game adapatation/abomination, Silent Hill: Revelations, is releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray on the 12th, so let’s try and forget about it so we can instead focus on what’s important: amazing Silent Hill cosplay. Fans of Konami’s survival horror franchise have been cosplaying as some of the series’ sickest creatures for some time now, but these are easily some of the best I’ve seen so far. After the break you’ll find fan interpretations of the nurses, Lying Figures, and Pyramid Head. They’re all great, but the one that really stands out to me is everyone’s favorite iconic tetrahedron headed monster, who is looking particularly good in these shots.

Some Extremely Dedicated Fans Have Translated The Japan Exclusive ‘Silent Hill Play Novel’

Japan gets a lot of great exclusives, like the Silent Hill Sounds Box and Fatal Frame IV — both of which I’m still pretty bitter about — but at least now we can sort of cross one off the list. The Silent Hill Play Novel was an altered version of the original Silent Hill that released for the Game Boy Advance exclusively in Japan back in 2001. It was a visual novel of sorts that retold the story of the first game through text-based gameplay with some player interaction that came from basic decisions and various puzzles. Strangely enough, it lacked one of the most iconic things about the survival horror franchise, a soundtrack.

If you missed it, now is your chance to experience the long forgotten game, which has been translated and made fully playable by Amy Balot of Silent Hill fansite Alchemilla Hospital and translator Toby Normoyle. It took seven years, but it’s finally here. This just goes to show the dedication some fans have for the franchises they love, and that can sometimes lead to incredibly cool projects like these. You can check out the Silent Hill Play Novel as an HTML Flash game that can be played online or as a download at their website.

6 Horror Games And The Studios That Should Make Them!

Sometimes a fresh set of eyes can bring new and interesting perspectives. When you look at the same thing for so long, it can get difficult to see its flaws, and while this can be said for many things, it’s especially true for video games. Getting a fresh perspective can be a great way to make sure a series stays engaging, to keep it from becoming stale and predictable. Franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill have each had games developed by studios other than the one that created them, and while the results have been a mixed bag, some of these partnerships have led to incredible games.

With this in mind, I’ve compiled a list of six game developers that I think are universally great and matched them with a horror franchise I feel they could make an incredible game for. Check out my picks after the break, and feel free to comment with your own dream matches!

[Random Cool] Silent Hill 2′s “Promise” Recreated With Minecraft Note Blocks

Last night, TJ and myself were playing some good ole’ Minecraft when it struck me that I need to YouTube “Minecraft Silent Hill” to see if anything pops up. I was not disappointed in the slightest. Turns out users are creating Silent Hill-inspired adventure maps and texture packs galore, bringing the horror of one of our favorite towns to the blocky smash hit.

But perhaps one of my favorite little finds came from YouTube user Joslock, who recreated a portion of the infamous Silent Hill 2 song “Promise” using note blocks. It’s not the full song, but it’s still really impressive and I’m willing to bet it was beyond time consuming. Check it out below! READ MORE

The Horror Happenings Of 2012: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

A lot happened last year. Some of it was good, some of it was bad, and some of it was downright ugly. I think it’s safe to say that when it came to the horror games of 2012, there was something for everyone. There’s the bustling indie horror revolution, which brought us amazing games like Slender and DayZ, both of which will soon be getting their own standalone games. That was fueled by Steam Greenlight, and even Kickstarter, to a certain degree. Also, zombies. There were a lot of those, too. Too many, even, and I never thought I’d say that. The year also brought us long anticipated sequels to two of the major horror franchises, with Resident Evil 7 and Silent Hill: Downpour. Oh, and Bloody Disgusting got a total site redesign. It looks gorgeous now (I know, I’m shameless).

I’ve looked through the highs and lows of 2012, brought them all together, and now I’d very much like to share them with all of you. Let’s look back at the year that was 2012, so we can better prepare ourselves for the craziness that will be 2013.

Toymunkey’s ‘Silent Hill’ Statues Are Shaping Up Nicely, Pyramid Head Coming Next Month
