5 Great Cover Songs!

Just like movie remakes, cover songs can be really tricky. Some are fantastic while some are truly god awful that should have never even considered “paying homage” to the original. But when they nail it, oh boy is it something special. Look at the remakes of John Carpenter’s The Thing or Dawn Of The Dead, films that took elements of the original and created something new and exciting. Films like these got me thinking, “What are some of my favorite cover songs? What are songs that payed homage to a classic while creating something original?” So I put together five cover songs that I feel met these requirements for your enjoyment. Head on below for my 5 Great Cover Songs! READ MORE

What do these certificates grant? No one knows. It’s not being revealed. In fact, you have to be one of the lucky few who finds one to figure out what the prize is. So, if you’re one of the lucky ones to find the proverbial “golden ticket”, be a pal and let me know what you got?

Tool Guitarist Adam Jones Posts Mysterious Image

Adam Jones, guitarist for prog-metal band Tool, has posted a mysterious image to his Instagram account. The caption for the image is simply “#soon”. The picture looks like a snippet of something much larger and includes what looks like an eye and a heavily textured cheek. There are definite style nods to Alex Grey, who did Tool’s artwork for Lateralus and 10,000 Days, leading many to speculate that this may be artwork for the long-awaited new Tool record. However, it must be stressed that nothing is confirmed.

[Album Review] Puscifer ‘Donkey Punch The Night EP’

Singer Maynard James Keenan seems to have found a very happy, comforting second home in the form of Puscifer. A project that is challenging and inventive, Puscifer satisfies needs, emotions, and sounds that Tool is unable to provide. And while we all wait for a fifth Tool album, there is something to be said about the investment and energy that Keenan invests into Puscifer.

I’ve made it quite clear that I was never a fan of the first Puscifer release, V Is For Vagina but also how I was completely won over by Conditions Of My Parole. Now I’ve been presented with a new EP entitled Donkey Punch The Night Away. With two new tracks, two covers and three remixes, it’s an interesting beast, one that took more than a few spins to really understand and appreciate. Join me below for my full thoughts. READ MORE

Now Danny Carey Says That The New Tool Album WILL Come Out This Year

New Zealand’s TheRock recently spoke with Tool drummer Danny Carey about the current state of the band, including the status of a new album. Carey also comments that, “Justin [Chancellor] has been really prolific on this record…” and that 6-7 songs are being recorded by the various members.

A new album will be the followup to 2006′s 10,000 Days. READ MORE

Maynard James Keenan Shoots Down New Tool Album In 2013

In what may be one of the most depressing things I’ve read today, Blabbermouth is saying that Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan spoke to The Pulse Of Radio’s Chilean Radio Futuro that there will be, “…No new disc. Not this year… I have not written any songs. So no, there is nothing.” According to Tool’s website, the other members (Adam Jones, Justin Chancellor, and Danny Carey) have been hard at work writing the music and are approximately halfway through.

Meanwhile, Keenan will be releasing a new Puscifer EP entitled Donkey Punch The Night on Feb. 19th. The EP will feature some new music as well as a cover of Queen‘s “Bohemian Rhapsody”. READ MORE

[Album Review] Tomahawk ‘Oddfellows’

I got the opportunity to see Tomahawk open up for Tool in 2002 at the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati, OH. To say that I hated the performance is an understatement. I was covering my ears half the time while rolling my eyes the other half. It simply wasn’t music that I wanted to hear, especially considering who would be playing in an hour. I had much the same reaction the first time I saw Meshuggah open up for Tool in 2001.

However, now Meshuggah is one of my favorite metal bands. I simply did not understand what they were doing at the time because I didn’t take the time to really listen and appreciate what exactly they were offering.

And so I entered Tomahawk’s latest release Oddfellows with this type of openness. After all, I have been wrong before. Could I be wrong again? READ MORE

6 Dream Tour Pairings!!!

How many of you have thought, “Man, wouldn’t it be just awesome if [insert band name here] toured with [insert band name here]?” I know I’ve done it on more than one occasion. Hell, I do it all the damn time. There are some tour pairings that make so much sense that it simply boggles my mind that the’ve never been done. These are tours that would get fans salivating, drool flowing from the mouth like waterfalls.

So I put together six of my most desired tour pairings, ones where the headliner and co-headliner would not only compliment each other but would take things to an entirely new level. Head on below to see my list! READ MORE

Could Another A Perfect Circle Studio Album Be In The Works?

In a recent interview with Las Vegas Weekly, A Perfect Circle guitarist Billy Howerdel spilled the beans on the status of a future APC album, stating, “…I’d love to – when the time is right. It would be awesome. I’m trying to write songs with that in mind.” However, Howerdel has his focus elsewhere right now: “…right now, I’m focusing most of my energy on a new Ashes Divide record, which is under way with 11 songs.” Howerdel hopes to enter the mixing phase of the new Ashes Divide album in January or February.

APC’s last album was 2004′s eMOTIVe, which was a collection of cover songs from such artists as Devo, Depeche Mode, John Lennon, and more. There were also two original tracks on that record.

Meanwhile, APC will be performing their sole 2012 show tomorrow night in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood. READ MORE

Puscifer Unveils ‘Donkey Punch The Night’ EP Album Artwork…I Think?

Alright, I can’t guarantee 100% that this is the album artwork for Puscifer‘s upcoming EP Donkey Punch The Night. Yes, the Pusicfer official Facebook page posted it. However, it’s so…cheap, ugly, amateurish, and terrible that I can’t bring myself to believe that it’s the final artwork. I’m guessing it’s gotta be some kind of joke. It looks like someone put it together in MS Paint (the Windows 95 version). Check it out below if you dare.

The EP will be released Feb. 19th, 2013 and will include a cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The band will be performing Apr. 6th, 2013 at Lollapalooza in Santiago, Chile. READ MORE

Tool Continue Writing New Album: Possibly Playing Ozzfest In 2013?

According to their November Newsletter, Tool members Adam Jones, Justin Chancellor, and Danny Carey will be continuing the writing process for their fifth full-length studio album, which is as-of-yet-untitled and also has no concrete release date. This album will be the follow-up to 2006′s 10,000 Days.

There is also a rumor going around the web that Tool will be playing Day 2 of Ozzfest Japan in May, 2013. Confirmed to be on the package is Slash, Deftones, and Slipknot (who will be headlining Day 1), and Stone Sour, and Black Sabbath (who are headlining Day 2). This rumor comes from a website entitled Ozzfest Japan but the Tool newsletter seems rather dubious, stating that they, “…have NOT been told that this is confirmed,” and that they, “…have NOT received anything that could be considered official about any shows.”

While it’s exciting to think that Tool will be releasing a new album and hitting the road, I find it best to not hold my breath and just be patient. It’s almost always worth it.
