[TV] “Zombieland” Series Cancelled, Amazon Passes On Pilot

Amazon Studios’ “Zombieland” pilot has ended its one month trial presentation and, sadly, the show will not continue. Not on Amazon at least, the network has passed on the series. While it’s technically possible the show could be passed on to another network, it’s probably not all that likely.

There were elements of the pilot I liked, but unfortunately the Amazon “voting” system – IMO – left the network completely off the hook in regard to its creative decisions. The pilot certainly wasn’t perfect, but most TV shows don’t find their stride until at least a few episodes in. Oh well.

The show was based on the hit Columbia Pictures movie of the same name, and found our four survivors outwitting zombies and searching for a place to call home. The Zombieland pilot came from the feature film’s original creative team, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Joe Schmo Show), and producer Gavin Polone (Gilmore Girls, Curb Your Enthusiasm). Eli Craig (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil) directed the pilot. READ MORE

[TV] 5 Questions With “Zombieland” Creators Rhett Reese And Paul Wernick

Amazon Studios’ “Zombieland” pilot is now out and available to view for free! Right here. There’s a feedback button to vote for the show’s future (as previously reported) – I say go ahead and do it. I dig the pilot, but I’m also aware that typically shows get even better afterwards.

The show is based on the hit Columbia Pictures movie of the same name, and finds four survivors outwitting zombies and searching for a place to call home. All of this comes from feature film’s original creative team, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (G.I. To that end I recently hopped on a conference call with Rheese and Wernick (and a few other journalists). We talked about how Kirk Ward was the original choice to play Tallahassee (even before Woody Harrelson; “Zombieland” was going to be a TV show before it became a movie) and why they’ve chosen re-adapt the material back into the TV format. They also give their thoughts on Amazon’s unique pilot vetting process. READ MORE

[TV] Whoa! Watch The “Zombieland” Pilot Now! UPDATE!

2nd Update: Apparently this is sort of a “technical error” launch on Amazon’s part. The link says you “own” the video and can play it, but it doesn’t actually play the file. Make no mistake, this is the page where it we’ll be. We’re now hearing that this will be out Friday (tomorrow). We’ll update when that happens.

This came almost out of nowhere (sans yesterday’s hint) Amazon Studios’ “Zombieland” pilot is… out! For free on Amazon! Right HERE! Right now this apparently only works for US residents.

Also, I haven’t seen it yet so it might be great, but if there’s an option to vote for the show’s future (as previously reported) – go ahead and do it. You know how much better shows get after the pilot.

[TV] Kirk Ward Takes Over For Woody Harrelson In “Zombieland”

Amazon’s “Zombieland” pilot has cast Kirk Ward (The Island) in the role of Tallahassee, taking over for Woody Harrelson who portrayed the character in the film. He joins Majara Walsh, Izabela Vidovic and Tyler Ross in the cast of central leads.

And he might have been the first choice for the role, from back in the day before Zombieland became a feature. Per Deadline, “Reese and Wernick, who conceived Zombieland as a TV show, originally had Ward in mind for Tallahassee after meeting the actor while shooting the William Shatner-starring Spike TV limited series Invasion Iowa.

The comedy continues the events of the original film, with new actors taking over the roles of Columbus, Tallahassee and Wichita, previously played by Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone, respectively, in the 2009 Ruben Fleischer feature. 10 Amazing Horror Comedies!!!

Horror Comedies are by far the most difficult horror sub-genre to execute. They’re also the most likely to fail commercially. While they’re one of my favorite sub genres and I wish there were more of them, when you combine those factors it’s a miracle there aren’t even less.

And many of them are quite great! So much so that I had to strip all numbers and rankings out of this list. While I certainly like some more than others, when you get down to stuff like Gremlins and An American Werewolf In London you’re dealing with grade A classics to which assigning a number would be an insult.

Also, please note that while I love The Cabin In The Woods and Scream, I don’t consider them “comedies.” They’re both intentionally funny, but I feel like their laughs exist to provoke a very specific conversation about horror tropes, which is its own thing.

So, in no particular order, head inside for my Top 10 Horror Comedies! READ MORE

[TV] Amazon Casts First “Zombieland” Leads!

Sundance breakout Tyler Ross, the above pictured star of indie Milkshake, and up-and-comer Izabela Vidovic, below, have been cast as two of the four leads in “Zombieland,” Amazon Studios’ comedy pilot based on the hit 2009 movie, reports Deadline.

The project, produced by Sony TV, is a continuation of the adventures of Tallahassee, Columbus (Ross), Wichita, and her younger sister Little Rock (Vidovic) — four humans who band together to survive the zombie apocalypse. In the movie, the “nerdy handsome” Columbus, who also narrates the story, was played by Jesse Eisenberg; Little Rock, a worldly girl hardened by adversity, was portrayed by Abigail Breslin.

Original “Zombieland” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the pilot and executive produce with the movie’s producer, Gavin Polone. READ MORE

‘Zombieland’ Series Gains ‘Tucker & Dale’ Director!

Amazon is in negotiations with Sony Pictures TV for a half-hour comedy series based on the hit 2009 feature horror comedy “Zombieland,” reports Deadline adding that it could be a straight-to-series order. It would mark the first original scripted series for the streaming service and the first Amazon original offering from a major studio. The company had been ramping up original production through its own Amazon Studios, the original film and series production arm of Amazon.com, which is behind six recently greenlighted comedy pilots.

Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are onboard for the series as writers/co-executive producers, as is the movie’s producer Gavin Polone, who would executive produce.

The deal with Amazon would fulfill the trio’s original vision for Zombieland as a TV series, which was first developed for CBS in 2005 before the rise of alternative digital distributors of original series like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. After CBS passed and Syfy couldn’t make a deal for the show, the project was turned into the Ruben Fleischer-directed feature starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, which became a sleeper hit.

Fleischer, busy with pilots under his overall deal at 20th TV, is not involved in the Zombieland series, with Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil) in talks to direct. Craig is a self-professed big Zombieland fan, listing the film among his favorite horror comedies. “Zombieland was just one of these fun rides,” he said. “The first 30 minutes were probably some of the most exciting and humorous action-comedy-horror filmaking I’ve ever seen.

[TV] “Zombieland” TV Series To Take Place On The Amazon…

…On Demand service, that is.

A few days ago we got wind of the news that Zombieland was headed into development as a TV show. Casting calls had gone out and we had some character breakdowns. More on that here.

Now, Broadcast Now is reporting the Amazon Studios is using the high profile series as a way to expand its Instand Video Service. “Online retailer Amazon is developing a remake of horror comedy ‘Zombieland’…The on-demand version, which is expected to be distributed as a series of 30 minute episodes, will include the four main characters of the original along with a handful of new characters. Gavin Polone, producer of the original film, which starred Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone, told Broadcast that he was now developing the project with Amazon.

[TV] “Zombieland” Back To Being A TV Series!

I feel like most people know that Zombieland started life as a TV series (though they never got as far as filming a pilot) and now it appears, rather concretely, as if they’re trying to go that route again. This is hot on the heels of the original film’s director Ruben Fleischer stating that there was no script for (and no immediate plans to make) the sequel.

Per io9, casting sheets went out yesterday for the series. The series looks like it will be a half-hour one and the character descriptions are similar to how they appeared in the film. Columbus and Wichita are still together, Wichita is still looking after Little Rock, Tallahassee is still a wild card etc… and there are two new characters (who hopefully are only in the one episode), “Fred and Ainsley are two office workers at the start of the zombie apocalypse, obliviously complaining about problems with their iPhones and getting the wrong order at Starbucks, which they admit are “first world problems” with a hashtag — while people are being disembowled just outside the window they’re not facing

While the original show was slated to air on CBS, there’s no concrete word on what network this current incarnation is targeting (or if its already been ordered by one). Head to io9 for more!

Do We Really Want Another ‘Zombieland,’ Anyways?

I’m a huge fan of Ruben Fleischer‘s 2009 surprise hit Zombieland, yet, after a few years to dwell on it, I don’t think I really care if they make a sequel anymore.

In an interview with Collider to talk Gangster Squad, now in theaters, Fleischer had this moderately shocking update: “I hate to do it, but I can say that there’s no immediate plans to make the movie. There’s no script, really, so the likelihood of it happening is slim. But I would not wanna put a nail in that coffin.

After years of updates, and even casting news, it’s sort of a mind-boggling revelation that there’s no script. And at this point, I’m not even sure there’s a franchise to build on. Don’t get me wrong, I’d be the first in line to see a sequel, I just don’t really care if one ever gets made…

In addition, he goes on to explain that they took a single pass at the script and it didn’t excite the studio nor the filmmaker, yet he doesn’t close the door on directing once again. At least he did offer a taste of the plot: “It was a continuation of the original story with the same characters. I guess the only thing I could really say is that the threat to our heroes wasn’t only zombies, like they encounter other people that they’re all jockeying for positions.

6 Essential Zombie Movies!!!

Not that you asked, but I probably don’t like the zombie genre as much as a lot of you. For starters, I feel like its over saturated. You can’t go more than a month without another one hitting the direct-to-DVD/VOD market. I also don’t find them particularly compelling as creatures. They lack personality and, fast or slow, they’re cognitively… stupid. I also feel like a lot of filmmakers latch onto them because of their popularity, not because they’re particularly engaged by them. In the process they forget that the most compelling part of this sub genre isn’t the creatures – it’s usually the survivors and their response to the undead horde.

As with anything, there are exceptions. Some zombie movies are great! This usually happens when the filmmakers are willing to take risks with the material instead of just coasting on the sweeping hordes of the undead. It’s why the Warm Bodies trailer actually looks like a LOT of fun and why what we’ve seen of World War Z looks a little bit like more of the same. Miracles like the original Dawn Of The Dead happened because people like George A. Romero weren’t coasting on the popularity of the creature, they were using it to say something new.

Head inside for 6 Essential Zombie Movies. And beware, I limited myself to only 1 Romero film!!! Otherwise this list would have been a bit different. READ MORE

[Script To Scream]: Patrick Swayze Used To Live In ‘Zombieland’ Plus We Talk With Screenwriter Rhett Reese!

ZombielandHeader21612 [Script To Scream]: Patrick Swayze Used To Live In Zombieland Plus We Talk With Screenwriter Rhett Reese!

A film lives many lives before it ever hits the screen. A script is usually revised multiple times (sometimes dozens) before a single foot of film is exposed (or the digital equivalent thereof). I’m not just talking about smaller stuff like dialogue polishes and the addition or deletion of scenes. Many times the core story is reworked in profound ways. Sometimes it’s downright shocking how different the final film can be from the initial drafts.

In this new (semi-regular) feature for Bloody-Disgusting, I’m going to take a look at some early drafts of scripts for horror films that you may have already seen and discuss the differences, whether they took a turn for the worse, better or just different. There are also a handful of scripts for sequels and remakes that never happened that are worth checking out – just to see what might have been.

These aren’t script reviews, and only rarely will I be breaking the stories down on a beat-by-beat basis. I’m just going to point out some cool, interesting and/or disastrous choices that happened along the way. Each installment will be different, and each installment will be fun. I’ll also be including sample pages (when available)* so you don’t have to take my word for it!

*This applies only to older and previously released films that are already part of the culture. We’re not in the business of leaking or sabotaging projects in development.

My first installment was a look at Joe Dante’s Gremlins, written by Chris Columbus. Today I’m taking a crack at Ruben Fleischer’s Zombieland written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Reese was also kind enough to talk with me a little bit about the differences between the draft we’re looking at today and the finished film as it appeared in 2009 – so you get to hear a lot of this straight from the horse’s mouth. In case you didn’t guess, almost every single word below the jump is a spoiler. READ MORE

TV: ‘Zombieland’ TV Series to Replace Sequel?

TV: Zombieland TV Series to Replace Sequel?

“The Walking Dead” is already making waves in Hollywood as studios are clamoring to get their grubby mitts on their own undead franchise.

Fresh off the record-breaking ratings for Sunday’s Season 2 premiere of AMC’s “The Walking Dead”, Fox and Sony Pictures Television are developing a potential half-hour comedy based on the Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone starrer Zombieland, says both THR and Vulture.

The project would be written by feature scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and produced through feature distributor Columbia’s sibling unit, Sony Pictures Television with an eye on putting the project into development for the 2012-13 broadcast season. The feature film grossed $75.6 million, with a sequel in the works for next year. A potential TV series, Polone told the site, would replace a big-screen follow-up.

Woody Harrelson on ‘Zombieland 2′: “I Don’t Feel Like a Sequels Guy”

There’s a new way to end the zombie apocalypse, and it involves Woody Harrelson.

In Columbia Pictures’ horror-comedy Zombieland, Harrelson played Tallahassee, a man on a mission for Twinkies who teams up with Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin on a cross-country survival trip. He saves the day, and finally gets his hands on a Twinkie. But the studio doesn’t want that to be the end of their scavenger hunt as a 3-D sequel has been long in development. Unfortunately, true to his character, Harrelson might be a pretty large kink in the wheel…

When Total Film asked if the follow-up is definitely happening, Harrelson explained: “I’m sure it will happen if everyone does it, but I’m not sure it’s the right thing to do. It’s one thing to do it when it came out real good and it made a lot of people laugh, but then to do a sequel… 99 out of 100 are worse by a lot. So I don’t know.” Adding, “I don’t feel like a sequels guy.

I guess the film can be sold on the shoulders of Eisenberg, hot off the success of Social Network, but could you see a sequel without Harrelson? I for one think he’s the glue that kept that posse together.

‘Zombieland 2′ Hoping to Recapture Cameo Magic?

Co-writer Rhett Reese is claiming via Twitter that the following is a “product of a game of ‘Telephone.’ Distorted.” Hopefully he’ll explain. In Ruben Fleischer’s ultra fun Zombieland, the group infamously invade the mansion of comedian Bill Murray, which turns into one of the most legendary scenes ever caught on film. They watch Ghostbusters, run around role playing Ghostbusters, and Murray even takes a jab at Garfield. Bloody Disgusting was tipped off to some inside info on Fleischer’s Zombieland 2 that’s sure to grab the attention of fans of the first film. Apparently, Columbia Pictures is planning yet another “superstar cameo” searching for someone iconic along the lines of “Harrison Ford” or “Anthony Hopkins”. In addition, the script calls for a lead villain with comedic roots, while Tallahassee (played by Woody Harrelson) will find himself going head-to-head with a “hunky rival”. Jesse Eisenberg is the only other star officially attached at this point, but expect some casting news soon.

Zombieland

Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) has made a habit of running from what scares him. Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) doesn’t have fears. If he did, he’d kick their ever-living ass. In a world overrun by zombies, these two are perfectly evolved survivors. But now, they’re about to stare down the most terrifying prospect of all: each other.
