The Canal
I knew absolutely nothing about this movie going into it so there were no expectations to crush after having seen it. That being said, the ending completely ruined this film for me. The Canal is an extremely slow burn but it maintains a sense of dread and suspense throughout the whole thing. A man finds out his wife is cheating on him and he blacks out that same night. He wakes up the next morning to discover she has been murdered (her body is found later in a canal) but he thinks a ghost that has been haunting their house is the culprit. It does have some great imagery, and the film is a weird mix of Sinister and 8mm. But I think it really all falls apart in the ending. I know this may not be popular opinion, but I hate it when a movie outright lies to me. It’s so incredibly disappointing. By lying, I mean it shows us things that don’t actually happen or only happen in the main character’s head (looking at you High Tension). Also, there is a bit towards the end that completely steals from Ringu. Had the ending of The Canal been less disappointing, the movie as a whole would have been a lot better.
