Stage Fright
So I love musicals and slashers are my favorite sub-genre of horror film. Needless to say, I was pretty excited about this movie. A horror musical with Meat Loaf and Minnie Driver that’s set at a summer theater camp? I was sold from day one. Unfortunately it was just a mediocre film, which is think is the most disappointing thing of all. I do think Stage Fright starts out strong, with an opening murder that’s pretty gruesome. The songs in the first act are also humorous and catchy. Unfortunately, after the first act is over the movie becomes kind of boring. The songs feel kind of thrown together and, while there are some good gory moments, the central mystery never seems all that interesting (and the reveal of the killer is way too obvious). I wasn’t expecting Rocky Horror or Phantom of the Paradise here, just something that was fun and entertaining. Stage Fright was neither. What a disappointing film.
