10. Duel (Universal, Region A & B)
I’m kicking my list off with the only big studio entry to make it and that’s Duel from Universal. It’s nice to see that when Universal actually wants to they can put in the time and effort to make a great Blu-ray release. Unfortunately they rarely seem to care. Duel was originally included on the Spielberg set that came out last year, but in May it made its solo debut and I certainly think it’s worth recognizing.
For starters, Duel is an awesome, awesome movie. This made-for-TV effort from Spielberg does not feel like a made-for-TV movie. It’s bigger than that and it’s easy to see why Spielberg went on to become the legendary director that he is today. The performance from Dennis Weaver is unforgettable.
There aren’t a ton of special features but the ones included are really interesting. There are two conversation/interview pieces with Spielberg, one that focuses primarily on Duel and another about working in TV in general. In addition there is a 10 minute piece with Richard Matheson on the writing of Duel. Pretty great release all around.
