Dead Island

The game centers on vacationers whose island paradise becomes a living hell when a zombie outbreak quickly spreads. Cut off from the rest of the world, the survivors have only the available materials and the island’s natural “weapons” to protect themselves from the vicious and growing legions of the undead.

‘Dead Island’ Dev Reveals Next-Gen Horror Game ‘Dying Light’

Techland, the makers of Dead Island, are working on a brand new horror game for current and next-gen consoles. It’s called Dying Light, and it has you surviving in a tropical setting, fighting off zombies with the weapons you craft… wait. This sounds familiar.

Okay, yes, Dying Light shares some rather striking similarities to Techland’s past work, but what sets this game apart is its new Mirror’s Edge-esque free-running system — which you’ll need to master in order to escape the monsters that hunt you — as well as a dynamic day/night cycle that plays a key role in the gameplay. For example, during the day you’ll need to scavenge for supplies while fighting off the slow zombies that roam about when it’s light outside. When the sun sets, the zombies become more dangerous, and new creatures come out to play. First look after the break.

Live Action Fan Film Tackles The Dangerous World Of ‘Dead Island’

Haven’t you heard? Dead Island: Riptide is out, and it’s pretty good. If you haven’t gone out and grabbed a copy, this fan film should tide you over until you do. It’s called Dead Island: No Retreat, and it’s the work of Youtuber pwnisher. It also features Youtube celebrity Toby Turner, better known as Tobuscus, and without spoiling anything, it most definitely has an ending worthy of the series’ name.

Take A Vacation With ‘Dead Island: Riptide,’ Available Now

Are you ready to get toasted on a tropical island resort, brimming with energy drinks and fiber bars that have mystical healing powers?! Does a mildly disappointed review from Adam Dodd — voted most likely to write really awesome reviews for Bloody Disgusting by his graduating class — get you pumped for the bloody mayhem waiting for you in Dead Island: Riptide? If you answered any of those questions with a triumphant “yes!” then I’d say you’re just about ready for Dead Island: Riptide, available this very second for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

In related news, despite apologizing for it, Deep Silver is totally still selling that awful idea known as the Zombie Bait Edition in the UK. I’d say about 99% of you disagreed with my opinion that it’s gross and wildly inappropriate, but that’s okay because we all have opinions and some of us are more vocal with them then others. Such is the beauty of the Internet!

‘Dead Island: Riptide’ Review: An Extended Vacation

I really enjoyed the original Dead Island. It wasn’t without its flaws, but the four-player co-op, RPG elements, and buckets of gore and viscera that only the zombie genre can deliver more than made up for many of the small problems I had with it. For the bevy of zombie games we’ve seen over the last couple years, none quite deliver the multiplayer sandbox thrills that this series provides.

With Dead Island: Riptide, Techland isn’t looking to push the envelope. This is decidedly more of the same, and while that can most definitely be a good thing for fans of the first game, it also means if you didn’t enjoy the rough-around-the-edges foundation of the original, there’s really nothing new here to lure you in.

Here’s A Spoiler Free List Of ‘Dead Island Riptide’ Achievements

The achievements for Dead Island Riptide have been made available online. Nothing outside the norm here, just your average collection of “kill x amount of enemies,” “reach level x,” and “find x amount of collectibles.” Some are a little more intriguing — I’d very much like to know who these mysterious twins are. Check out the list after the break, minus the 13 secret cheevos that almost definitely have spoilers.

[Premature Evaluation] ‘Dead Island Riptide’

If you’re aching for more cooperative zombie pummeling action, the Dead Island series has you covered. The first game might not have lived up to many fans’ expectations after seeing that heart-wrenching trailer, but it was still an incredibly fun post-apocalyptic RPG. Riptide promises more of what we loved about the first game, along with tweaks to the multiplayer and new features like a new playable character, dynamic weather system, flooding, and Left 4 Dead style crescendo moments.

What do TJ and I think about the next entry in the Dead Island series? Read on and find out!

Exploration Is Key In ‘Dead Island Riptide’

I hope you’ve been keeping your machetes sharp and your blunt instruments… blunt, because Dead Island Riptide is releasing in a month. Executive producer Sebastian Reichert had a few things to say about the upcoming game, including what he feels will impress players the most. It’s not the boat, dynamic weather system, or Left 4 Dead style crescendo moments — he’s actually most excited about the level design.

“The way that the exploration of the island works will be what keeps people pushing forward. When you visit a point the first time, the way back feels different because of the level design.” Reichert said. The sense of exploration, which was definitely present in the first game, will be enhanced by the weather and flooding.

Dead Island Riptide launches on the PS3, PC and Xbox 360 on April 23. If you missed it, I recommend watching the new trailer that released yesterday.

The Horrors Have Only Just Begun In This New ‘Dead Island Riptide’ Trailer

I’m not expecting anything revolutionary with the upcoming pseudo-sequel Dead Island Riptide — all I need is an electrified machete, a horde of zombies, and a few friends to mow them down with. That’s not to say I don’t have high hopes for it. There are many ways Techland can improve their DLC support, so it’s not quite as abysmal as the original game’s DLC, and there are even a few pages I think they can take from Far Cry 3′s book. Check out a brand new “They thought wrong” trailer, after the jump.

Someone Made ‘Dead Island’s’ Electrified Knife, Then Had Their Friend Use It On Them

In Dead Island you can strap a battery to a blade weapon to give it sizzling electrical power. The Old Smokey is my favorite weapon in the game and you could tell I was using it because I left nothing but charred and dismembered zombie corpses in my wake. Now, someone has actually made something closely resembling that weapon by strapping a taser to a double bladed sword. It looks intensely badass, but it’s practical too. When its charge is low, just plug it into a wall outlet to give it some extra zombie-killing, or in this case, shirtless guy-zapping power. More after the break!

‘Dead Island: Riptide’ Pre-order DLC Includes A BBQ Blade, Costumes, No Bloody Torso

Publisher Deep Silver has revealed the bonus DLC that comes with pre-ordering Dead Island: Riptide, and if you’re expecting anything as crazy as that bloody female torso folks in the UK are getting with the Zombie Bait Edition, prepare for some mild disappointment. The Fashion Victim DLC, which includes costumes for the game’s five playable characters, will be available at UK retailer GAME. Everyone else gets the Survivor Pack that includes a BBQ Blade — a knife with a superheated blade — a stat booster and a discounted shop.

Dead Island: Riptide releases on April 23 in North America and April 26 in Europe for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. If you opt out of pre-ordering it you can still get the Survivor Pack for $5, or 400 MSP, and the Fashion Victim pack for $2 (160 MSP).

Let’s Face It, Dead Island’s DLC Sucked; Here’s How ‘Riptide’ Can Do Better

I’ve shared my love for Dead Island numerous times now. It had its issues, sure, but that didn’t keep it from being a highly addictive zombie game that was alarmingly easy to sink a lot of hours into, especially if you had a few friends to play it with. I’ve talked plenty already about what I think Techland can do to improve the series, even going so far as to borrow a few ideas from the similarly themed Far Cry 3. However, there still an area left that I have yet to cover, and it’s potentially where Techland made their worst mistakes. Let’s talk about DLC.

I Hope You’re Sitting Down, Because Deep Silver Just Announced That ‘Dead Island’ Has Passed Five Million Sold

That’s right, you read that headline correctly. Techland and Deep Silver’s post-apocalyptic zombie butt-whooping game Dead Island has sold over five million units at retail and through digital distribution. To put that in perspective, that’s more than the combined sales of both games in the similarly themed Dead Rising franchise. That’s very impressive, especially for a new IP. Dead Island was flawed, especially when it came to making good on the promise to bring us an emotional, story-driven experience, but it was also damn fun. It’s pseudo-sequel, Dead Island: Riptide, releases on April 23.

Feast Your Eyes On Nine Wonderful Minutes Of ‘Dead Island: Riptide’ Gameplay Footage

Deep Silver shared some Dead Island: Riptide gameplay footage with IGN today and outside of a few new features like a boat you can drive around the flooded island and hubs you have to defend, it looks like what you would expect from a Dead Island game. Bashing, slicing, kicking, and stomping on the undead until they’re nothing but piles of mush and giblets at your feet is still very much the focus. After the jump you can watch the game’s creative producer scavenge mounted guns from a crashed helicopter and use them to fortify a hub from waves of zombies in a Left 4 Dead style crescendo moment.

I like the new feature — it’s something I politely requested back in August — though I can’t say I’m too enthusiastic about the fact that if one survivor dies then you fail the mission. Why not just let them die? It makes me care more about them as fellow survivors, while forcing me to protect them because I’ll have to start over if I don’t will only make me hate them. Actually, forget it. It’s too late, I hate them already.

The ‘Dead Island: Riptide’ Zombie Bait Edition Brings With It A Buxom, Bloodied Bust, Awful Ideas

You hear that sound? That’s the sound of a lot of people getting angry over Dead Island: Riptide’s special edition. Unlike the Rigor Mortis Edition, which is actually pretty cool, Deep Silver decided that was far too tame so they designed the Zombie Bait Edition, which apparently has a target demographic of fucking serial killers. “What’s that on your mantle, George?” “Oh, you noticed that? That’s my bloody bust of a mangled woman. Her name’s Lola, isn’t she pretty? Hey, you want to come down to my dungeon, err, basement for a sec?” More after the break.

Six Lessons ‘Dead Island’ Can Learn From ‘Far Cry 3′

With its emphasis on co-op and light RPG elements, Dead Island is one of the more interesting takes on the popular zombie genre we’ve seen from a big budget game in some time. I enjoyed the original quite a bit, despite its flaws. The story and characters may be alarmingly dull, but there’s nothing quite as satisfying as strapping a car battery to a machete so you can mow down a horde of zombies. I recently bought Far Cry 3 (finally), and I’ve realized that the entire time I’m playing it, all I can think about is how many things it does better than Dead Island. Comparing it to the post-apocalyptic zombie game might seem a bit odd at first, but the two games are actually very similar.

Each game violently tosses you into a hostile world where pretty much everything wants to kill you, and usually in horribly brutal ways — only yesterday I was mauled by a bear as I was stalking two pirates on a beach only to jump into the ocean and get eaten by a shark. Both games are about exploration, survival, and scavenging to survive, though Far Cry 3 puts more effort into the all of that. So while they’re different, they’re also really similar. The big difference is Far Cry 3 is far superior to Dead Island in many ways. To remedy this, I’ve chosen six things Far Cry 3 does really well, so Dead Island can take notes. Check them out after the break.

Deep Silver Reveals ‘Dead Island Riptide’ Rigor Mortis Edition And Fan-Sourced Contents

The items that proved the most popular are definitely the cooler ones from the list, though I’ll admit I am a little bummed the microfiber screen cleaning cloth didn’t make the cut. There’s No Shortage Of Guns, Explosions, And Undead Hordes In These New ‘Dead Island: Riptide’ Screens

You like killing zombies with whatever’s near you at the time? Of course you do. Dead Island: Riptide has gamers like you in mind, because it’s all about bashing unsuspecting zombies right in their stupid, ugly heads — or better yet, you can strap a car battery to a machete and cut it to little, electrified giblets. Riptide promises more of what made the first game great, including loads of weapons and beautiful tropical environments brimming with zombies for you to use those weapons on. There’s also a dynamic weather system that can cause flash floods, adding an element of unpredictability to the gameplay. Your Guide To The Best Video Game Deals On Cyber Monday

Black Friday is the one day of the year where your chances of getting great deals at your local retailer are about as good as your chances of getting curb-stomped by a fellow shopper on your way to the electronics section. I can understand the allure of getting stuff on the cheap, but as a self-proclaimed geek with alarmingly brittle bones who avoids confrontation like the Bubonic plague, I don’t cherish the idea of fighting my way through a tidal wave of angry shoppers like I’m Brad Pitt in World War Z so I can get an HDTV for half off.

This is where Cyber Monday comes in, because you can get many of those same deals without the hassle of waiting in lines for hours between that guy who obviously hasn’t showered in at least a week and the old lady with the crippled leg who looks sweet but really brought that cane as an instrument to bash your fucking head in the second you put your hands on something she has her Glaucoma riddled eyes on. So if you’re like me and none of the above sounds like a meaningful use of your time, you should definitely read on for all the best video game deals Cyber Monday has to offer.

UPDATE 1: I’ve added deals from Newegg, Xbox Live, and a few more courtesy of Best Buy.

[13 Days Of Horror] Day 11: Why We Love Zombie Games

If you were to compile a list of the major horror games — that we know of — coming out over the next year, roughly half of them star the hungry undead in some capacity. In case you missed it, I actually just did that (you can find the links at the end of this article) and we’re at about a 50/50 split. That’s a lot of zombie games, and while I’m usually not one to complain, it does make me wonder. How many zombies does it take before the genre is too popular, and if that number exists, are we about to reach it?

I’m a fan of the genre, always have been. Zombies have had a starring role in my life since I first watched the original Dawn of the Dead at the ripe old age of six. Since then I’ve gorged myself on all the undead entertainment I can find. I’m always searching for my next fix, whether that’s through television, movies, video games, books, comics, haunted houses, zombie walks, whatever. Zombies haven’t always been so popular. In fact, this is a relatively new thing. The undead hordes are no stranger to the virtual realm of video games, having been a facet of this glorious industry for the last three decades. So why are they so popular now? What is it that makes a zombie so fascinating? Let’s find out.
