Ridley Scott Talks Prometheus Space Jockeys, H.R. Giger and Xenomorphs

Filmophilia conducted a pretty lengthy interview with Ridley Scott, director of Twentieth Century Fox’s sci-fi horror Prometheus, the assumed prequel to his 1979 Alien.

While Scott has been absolutely deceitful in earlier interviews, he’s slowly become more and more candid about the connection to the 30-year-old franchise. In the most recent of chats Scott comes clean on the addition of the Space Jockey, reveals the involvement of artist H.R. Giger, and promises with a bold face that we won’t be seeing the xenomorph synonymous with the franchise. *Article updated with music from the film’s trailer. The video is in the middle of this story.

It’s been quite a month for Twentieth Century Fox and Prometheus, their presumed prequel to Alien directed by franchise creator Ridley Scott. Keeping the excitement in momentum, by clicking the above or below still you’ll now find our new gallery of hi-res imagery!

In addition, Tom Rothman, CEO of Fox, spoke with MTV about the recent trailer leak. “I heard some of it leaked, which wasn’t so good,” he said. “That’s not fair. It’s heartbreakingly unfair, because … the quality of the visuals is as spectacularly beautiful, shot in 3-D compositionally the way only a master could do it,” Rothman added. “For some early, early, early, early half-baked, half-assed test to leak, it’s so unfair.

And speaking on the Alien connection he explains: “I’ll tell you the great thing: It’s way bigger than that. The ideas are way bigger, way more original and — it’s a scary word — way more profound.

‘Prometheus’ to Carry Recognizable Creatures

 Prometheus to Carry Recognizable Creatures

All of the secrecy behind Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is getting a bit annoying, considering the entire plot leaked online months ago, and that it’s already been confirmed by multiple cast members that it’s got the DNA of Scott’s 1979 breakthrough Alien. Still, every interview consists of annoying “we can’t talk about it”-type responses…even though a series of new images (and the synopsis) confirm everything known for months.

Adding some blurbs with the new batch of imagery, EW talked with the cast and got yet another one of the Prometheus crew to confirm the connection. “There’s definitely a link to ‘Alien’,” claims Michael Fassbender before adding, “There’s creatures in it that you’ll recognize.

But other cast members, like Charlize Theron, are annoyingly playing coy. Says the actress, “I think people should really let go of the idea that it’s an ‘Alien’ film.

Here’s an idea, get your press team to meet with the entire cast and crew and decide what can and can’t be revealed. All of this back and forth is getting annoying, especially when they aren’t fooling anyone. And just for the f-ck of it, here’s the entire plot crunch just as big middle finger to people like Theron. Read it if you dare.

All of the answers will eventually be revealed on June 8. Prometheus is probably my number one most anticipated film of 2012. What’s yours? READ MORE

Ridley Scott Leaks Pretty Huge ‘Prometheus’ News Linking ‘Alien’

Ridley Scott Leaks Pretty Huge Prometheus News Linking Alien

It beginning to hit a point where there’s just no way around avoiding Prometheus spoilers. The entire plot has already been let out of the bag and various stars have confirmed it shares the same DNA as Scott’s breakthrough 1979 Alien. In an interview with Speakeasy, Scott talks about the film’s central metaphor and also revealed something huge about the final eight minutes of the film. You have been warned.

The central metaphor of Prometheus is about a “higher being” who challenges the gods, and the gods don’t want to give him fire, says the site. “Fire is our first form of technology,” Scott says, and so by taking fire, the higher being is punished “in perpetuity in a horrible fashion.” Much like the story of the mythological god, Prometheus, who stole fire from Zeus and for his actions was bound to a rock with an eagle eternally devouring his liver.

But the big news is that the concluding eight minutes of the Prometheus story evolve into “a pretty good DNA of the ‘Alien’ one.” Early reports were that Prometheus leads up to the space jockey crash landing and setting up the events of Alien.

MTV Spoils Michael Fassbenders Prometheus Role in Headline

Some of us enjoy spoilers, others (like me) wish I could avoid them all together. This morning MTV posted a major character spoiler in their effin’ headline for Ridley Scott’s now-filming Prometheus, the Alien prequel starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Guy Pearce, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Benedict Wong, Emun Elliott, Ben Foster and Patrick Wilson (weeeeeewwwwwww).

What was the spoiler you ask? If you don’t want to know, look away now. The site confirmed in an interview with Michael Fassbender that he’ll be starring as an android in the vein of Ash (Ian Holm) in Alien and Bishop (Lance Henriksen) in Aliens. No other interesting bits were talked about, but this is a pretty major role that taps into some of the best themes in the franchise.

Damon Lindelof penned the screenplay in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Massive Structures Built on the Set of ‘Prometheus’

Only because I’m sick of receiving threatening legal documents from Twentieth Century Fox, we’re going to link out to AVP Galaxy (link #1, link #2) who have a handful of pretty badass behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Ridley Scott’s now-filming Prometheus.

They write about an airlock that looks a lot like the exterior of the Nostromo airlock and that at the top of the piece you can see a logo that looks like a cross between the W-Y logo from Aliens and the bird wings logo of Alien. The other two pictures show the cavern entrance but fully closed, you can see the hieroglyphs on the door and the landing leg from the promotional image. The second set of pics are location shots on an Icelandic forum.

The Perfect Machine: Michael Fassbender Wanted for ‘RoboCop’

In an interview with Brazillian TV channel Globo 1, RoboCop director José Padilha tells that he plans on shooting in spring of 2012, with dreams of landing Michael Fassbender as the new Officer Alex J. Murphy (played in the 1987 version, and its sequels, by Peter Weller).

Now, let’s be serious here for a moment. After blowing every director’s minds with his performance in X-Men: First Class, Fassbender has booked a slew of major roles that include Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and has been in talks for more than I can count on one hand. Truly, Fassbender is now at a level where he picks his projects. It’s nice that Padilha wants him, sh*t, we all do, but the odds are against him.

The original was about a cop who was near death and was drafted to become a powerful cyborg cop, until suppressed memories of his past life come back to haunt him.

No word on if Incendies director Denis Villeneuve is still at the helm.

Aaron Guzikowski’s dark tale “centers on a small-town man who, after his daughter and her friend are kidnapped and the cops fail to solve the crime, takes matters into his own hands, holding hostage the person he suspects committed the crime. He also comes into conflict with the big-city detective assigned to the case.

Comic-Con ’11: The ‘Prometheus’ Ship Lives to Tell PG-13 Story

Some disturbing news out of the ongoing Fox panel in Hall H of the San Diego Comic-Con. The biggest disappointment out of the panel is that the film is apparently PG-13 but Scott hinted they are covering their asses with more extreme material and do what’s right for the film in the end. He says it is not hindering the movie and that he wants “to scare the shit out of you.” As for the Alien connection, this is all he had to share: “It has the DNA of the original ‘Alien’ that’s it. Everything else is completely original.

The thousands of fans were then treated to the first ever footage, as described by Andrew Kasch beyond the break.

‘Prometheus’ Seeks The Beginning Of Time In Iceland

After spending a little over two months at Pinewood Studios, Ridley Scott is moving the Prometheus shoot to Iceland, where he’ll be filming at the base of the Hekla volcano, which was rumored to be on the verge of eruption mere days ago, and the Dettifoss waterfall. The location isn’t as important as what Scott says is being shot there. “It will be 15 minutes in total, if all goes to plan,” the secretive director said. “We are shooting the beginning of time.”

That fits pretty nicely into the leaked plot outline, which has yet to be confirmed. According to the insider, “Archaeological digs in Africa reveal alien artifacts that humans were genetically engineered by a advanced alien race (space jockeys). These ‘Alien Gods’ also terraformed Earth in order to make it habitable for their human creations.” Does that mean Iceland is doubling for the dark continent? Or are these flashback scenes that are going to based around the terraforming of Earth?

Ice News also claims that Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace will be involved with the shoot, which raises even more questions about how these sequences fit into the timeline of the film, which is supposedly set in 2058. Does this mean that the top-billing actors will play alien gods? Or are they the archaeologists who find the dig? Do the archaeologists work for Weyland Corp.?

How this all fits together is anyone’s guess at this point. All I know is that the air of mystery surrounding Prometheus is making me even more excited for its June 8, 2012 release.
