LaLaurie Mansion (New Orleans, LA)
Though the name is now synonymous with Kathy Bates’ portrayal of the character on the third season of American Horror Story, Delphine LaLaurie is nevertheless a very real and terrifying figure in history. She was a serial killer who tortured and murdered slaves in her house, which is not a New Orleans landmark. Her criminal acts were discovered when her house caught fire in 1834, but she managed to escape to France with her family. It is currently a popular New Orleans tourist attraction.
