Dead Space
If the first 30 minutes of Dead Space don’t make you break into a cold sweat, you’re not human. While the series declined in quality with each subsequent installment (Dead Space 3 made the unwise decision of emphasizing action over atmosphere and scares), the first game feels like you are living in your worst nightmare. The best thing about the game was that decapitating the monsters (known as necromorphs) wasn’t enough to kill them. You have to dismember multiple limbs to fully destroy them. There is a slightly convoluted plot regarding a Marker (a large monument that causes humans to turn into the aforementioned necromorphs) and the government group that is studying it, but the game is all about the scares, and boy does it have them in spades. A film adaptation could capitalize on those scares and really be an Alien for a new generation.
