Heavy Rain
While technically not a straightforward “horror” game, the very Seven-ish Heavy Rain features an amazing story chronicling four strangers as they try to track a child murderer. The title comes from the killer’s modus operandi: he/she kidnaps children during the rainy fall season, after which their bodies are found several days later in a remote location, drowning being the cause of death, along with an origami animal figure in their hands, and an orchid on their chest. The twist ending doesn’t completely hold up, or at least it didn’t with the way I played the game (this is one of those games where there are about 20 different endings and you could get any one depending on the choices you make), but a film adaptation could easily make it work.
