Resident Evil (2002)
The first film in the franchise managed to kick off a pretty original apocalyptic scenario without simply re-hashing the game’s premise, and I’ll give Anderson and company points for getting right down to business with some inventive gore and monsters galore. Case in point: the slaughter of a commando team by the A.I. mainframe known as The Red Queen, courtesy of a laser grid that turns a team of commandos into Kevlar-coated cutlets. (I’m sure Anderson had seen Vinceno Natali’s Cube prior to scripting this scene, as that 1997 film featured an almost identical kill in its first five minutes… but this one expands the concept to even more outrageous proportions.)
