Tusk
I realize this is not popular opinion, as most people seem to despise this movie (as well as Kevin Smith’s other genre effort, Red State). But I really liked Tusk. I was prepared to write it off as a failed effort to be weird for weird’s sake, but I had a blast with this film. It’s not my favorite film of the year (I don’t think it would even crack the top 10), but I don’t think it deserves all the flack it’s been getting. I think all of the performances are great, and while the film seemed to lose many people when Johnny Depp entered the picture, that was the point where I fell in love with Tusk (and I’m not even a Depp fanatic). The performance is so weird and makes absolutely no sense, but I don’t care. Adding to all of this is the actual walrus transformation. When it is finally revealed it’s incredibly shocking and silly at the same time. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie quite like Tusk, and that’s surprising enough for me. Tusk definitely isn’t for everyone, but if you go in open-minded I think you may enjoy it.
