Scream was predicted to be DOA by Variety in the weeks leading up to its release. I don’t think people really knew what kind of box office juggernaut Scream would turn out to be. $103 million is impressive for any horror film, much less one that was released in December. Interestingly enough, the film opened in second place to Beavis and Butt-head Do America with a mere $6 million. Rather than decline in ticket sales in the following weeks, it continued to rise and make more and more money as the positive word of mouth spread, becoming one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time.
