Opening on Christmas Day is an extremely bold move, but the gamble paid off for the most part in the case of Robert Rodriguez’s The Faculty. It opened the same day as films like Stepmom, Patch Adams, Mighty Joe Young and The Thin Red Line, making 1998 one of the most crowded Christmas Days in years in terms of film releases. The Faculty only opened in the number 5 slot with $11.6 million (I myself was actually in the theater for Mighty Joe Young that weekend…oops), but it grew some legs over the weeks and went on to gross a respectable $40.2 million domestically.
