2. [REC] 4: Apocalypse

The [REC] franchise started off so promisingly. The first film was a fantastic entry in the zombie and found-footage genre, while the second one took the franchise in a new direction by injecting a possession aspect to the proceedings. [REC] 3 was seen by some as a bit of a misstep after they injected humor into the film (and ditched the found-footage element). Nothing could compare to [REC] 4: Apocalypse (read my review) though, as it ends the franchise on one of the blandest notes ever. Things start off promisingly with the film, since it brings Manuela Velasco back as Ángela after she sat out part 3. That’s about the only positive side to this film, which feels reminiscent of Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. We were promised an apocalypse in the title of [REC] 4 but the entire movie is spent on a boat. If it brought anything new to the table it might be worth watching, but everything about the film is just so by-the-numbers. It’s all rather dull and the fact that it disregards the religious aspects from the previous films is possibly the most disappointing thing about the [REC] 4. Do yourself a favor and pretend that this one just doesn’t exist.
