4. Cooties

Horror comedy can be a tricky thing to pull of, especially if you don’t find the right balance in tone. For the most part, Cooties nails this tone, and the cast (made up of Elijah Wood, Alison Pill, Nasim Pedrad, and a scene-stealing Leigh Whannell) is more than game. Unfortunately, Cooties doesn’t go far enough with its dark humor or its horror, making this yet another missed opportunity. The jokes fly fast an furious, but less than half of them stick the landing. The interesting premise of a school full of children becoming infected by a zombie virus birthed from diseased chicken nuggets is inspired, but the movie just stretches out that premise as far as it can go, yet still doesn’t fully deliver on its promise. In the end we’re left with a fun, but forgettable film, and much like Dark Was the Night, it ends just as it gets interesting.
