7. The Green Inferno

Let me be clear: I do not hate Eli Roth. I don’t even hate The Green Inferno. It’s just a big missed opportunity. This stems from the fact that buzz has been circling the film since it originally premiered at TIFF way back in 2013. Expectations were set for a brutal, gory and disgusting cannibal film. What is so disappointing about The Green Inferno is that it’s kind of a tame cannibal film, which is an oxymoron, but it’s true. It peaks way too early with Jonah’s (Aaron Burns) death scene and never gives us another standout kill. Add to that the homophobia (“activism is GAY!”) and a bunch of unlikable characters and you’ve got a film that’s kind of annoying on top of being mediocre. It’s also filled with unnecessary toilet humor. I can maybe excuse the diarrhea scene, because it’s realistic that you’d have to poop at some point, but the masturbation scene just felt like overkill.
