8. The Lazarus Effect

Maybe I’m just bitter because The Lazarus Effect was my birthday movie this year (February 27th, in case you want to put a reminder on your calendar), or maybe it’s because the trailer shamelessly spoils a major character death, but I kind of hated it. It features a fantastic cast (all of whom are playing mostly against type) and has a Flatliners-esque story about a group of medical researchers who develop a serum capable of bringing the dead back to life. It’s an interesting, if not wholly original concept that is ruined when Olivia Wilde’s character actually dies and the team decide to bring her back to live. From there, the film devolves into a slasher movie as she proceeds to kill off the team one by one. It’s a dull, uninspired film that is all the more disappointing considering the group of people involved in making it.
