Last year I tried to do something a little different with my end-of-year lists: rather than do a “Best and Worst” I opted to do a “Most Surprising” and “Most Disappointing” films. This year, I’m doing that but also including a “Best Of” list! This list features many films that may not be outstanding (though a few of them certainly are), but they either surpassed my initial expectations or came out of nowhere and pleasantly surprised me. The trouble with a list like this is that my expectations for a film could vastly differ from yours, so while I may have known nothing about something like Last Shift before going into it, you may have had high expectations after reading a positive review for it and been let down by it (in which case it would make it on your “Most Disappointing” list). With that being said, here are my 10 most surprising horror movies from 2015 ranked in order of how much I liked them!*
*For the sake of not letting readers feel left out, I opted not to include films that only screened at festivals this year. Those will all go on my 2016 lists (should they actually get a release in 2016). Also, I was not able to see every genre film that came out this year, but I did see most of them.
