How often have you watched a movie and the ending completely ruined everything that had come before it? The fact of the matter is that endings can be a little bit tricky, but that doesn’t mean you have to deny the audience a satisfying ending. We’ve put together a list of horror movie endings that we feel are the least satisfying. Do you agree with our choices?

The Mist

This may be a controversial pick, because I do actually like the ending of Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novella. It just took me three or four viewings to do so because the first time it really had a bad effect on me. You all probably know the story: David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his motley crew of survivors, one of which is his eight-year-old son, escape from the supermarket they were holed up in and drive into the titular weather phenomenon. Once they run out of gas, they decide they would rather die than be killed by the creatures in the mist, but they only have four bullets for the five of them in the car. David kills everyone in the car, including his son, and steps out of the vehicle, only to see the mist receding and the army driving up in tanks to rescue them. It’s a cruel, cruel ending. I’m not sure if “unsatisfying” is the appropriate word. “Soul-crushing,” maybe?
