The Hitcher (February 21, 1986)
What makes The Hitcher so scary is that it’s so realistic. It’s one of the most frustrating viewing experiences you’ll ever have watching a film because you just want Jim (C. Thomas Howell) to get a win somewhere, but the titular foe (Rutger Hauer) keeps one-upping him at every turn. The truck scene with Jennifer Jason Leigh is a highlight, but The Hitcher succeeds at making you feel as exhausted as Jim by the time the credits roll. If you’re a fan of the film, check out Jonathan’s editorial on it celebrating its 30th anniversary. It’s a great read!
