Industrial rock band Ventenner is no stranger to atmosphere, crafting their own style and sound on their new album Distorture, which came out yesterday (order here).
And to celebrate this album’s release, main man Charlie Dawe has taken this idea of atmosphere and turned it towards creating a Top 10 Atmospheric Horror Films list!
Dawe begins by stating:
As a band, one thing we strive for is creating atmosphere. Ventenner often draws comparisons with horror films, and I have to say I really do soak them up like a sponge. So this is a list of my top 10 atmospheric horror films and those that have had the biggest influence on me.

The Shining
From the outset of this film with the sinister opening music and sweeping panoramics of the mountains, something just feels off. The whole time this film is on there’s an unsettling quietness about it. That said the film is anything but quiet, the sound design is horrifying and Kubrick creates a deeply sinister feel the whole way through.
