We’re sad to learn that Victor Miller has passed away this week at 86.

“Yesterday my father, Victor Miller, went to his final reward,” son Ian Miller writes on Instagram. “He was almost always the smartest, funniest person in whatever room he was in. He inspired in me, and many others, a love of photography, music, and storytelling.”

Miller’s son adds, “He had a helluva run and will be missed dearly.”

Prior to writing the original Friday the 13th, Victor Miller had written the film Manny’s Orphans for director Sean Cunningham, who of course directed Friday the 13th just two years later.

Victor Miller’s writing credits also include the 1982 film A Stranger Is Watching, along with TV shows “One Life to Live,” “Guiding Light,” “General Hospital,” and “Married With Children.”

Victor Miller later returned to the horror genre to write the film Rock, Paper, Scissors in 2017, which was directed by fellow horror legend Tom Holland (Child’s Play, Fright Night).

But it’s of course Friday the 13th that will forever be the enduring legacy of Victor Miller in the world of entertainment, and what a legacy that is. The 1980 horror classic changed the game for the horror genre and launched a legendary saga that still continues to this day, with Victor Miller on board as an executive producer for the upcoming prequel series “Crystal Lake.”

The A24 series, set to premiere on Peacock this October, will jump back in time to explore the events that paved the way for the story Miller and Cunningham told all those years ago.

Victor Miller is survived by his wife, two sons, and his grandson.

Based on the manga written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow from 1989 to 1991, Ghost in the Shell takes place in 2029. A female cybernetic government agent, Major Motoko Kusanagi (voiced by Atsuko Tanaka), and the Internal Bureau of Investigations are hot on the trail of “The Puppet Master,” a mysterious and threatening computer virus capable of infiltrating human hosts. Together with her fellow agents from Section 9, Kusanagi embarks on a high-tech race against time to capture the omnipresent entity.

No word on if this 4K release of the film has seen the same music substitution over the end credits as the 2020 4K UHD release.

As fans know, the film has gone on to influence several filmmakers, spawn a sequel in 2004 (also directed by Oshii), a television series, the 2017 live-action adaptation by Rupert Sanders, and now the recent Netflix series that debuted this past July, which is produced by Science Saru and directed by Moko-chan.

Curry passed away Tuesday night at his home in Los Angeles, TMZ reports.

The actor broke out for his lead role in Rocky Horror, having been part of the original stage production at a tiny upstairs venue at London’s Royal Court Theatre before it was adapted to screen and became a global cult hit.

Curry went on to a successful, prolific career; not even a massive stroke in 2012 slowed him down.

Beyond his role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, horror fans know him best as the original Pennywise, in a two-part ABC adaptation of It, with more than 37 million households tuning in. Needless to say, his terrifying turn traumatized a generation of TV watchers.

His distinct voice ensured he was recognizable under all the makeup and prosthetics, most notably in Ridley Scott’s Legend, for which he turned in a mesmeric performance as the fantasy film’s villain, Darkness. That voice also led to a robust voice acting career as well, from Scooby-Doo to Batman Beyond.

Other notable roles in the genre space include a smaller part in Michael Crichton’s Congo (1995), Scary Movie 2 (2001), and Stream (2024). Our own Paul Lê recently celebrated Curry’s triple-role in an episode of the enduring horror anthology Tales from the Crypt, “Death of Some Salesmen.“

Curry also had a turn as a recording artist, releasing three rock albums in the late 1970s and early ’80s and even going on tour. 

Needless to say, the multi-hyphenate talent leaves behind an incredible legacy that’ll continue to be celebrated.

Wingard teases, “I look at this as a cap in the trilogy between The Guest and You’re Next. It’s not like a direct sequel, in the sense that it’s a continuation of those characters, but it takes place in the same town as The Guest. The idea is that the secret programs we’re seeing going on here are other little aspects of the same thing David’s character came from in The Guest.”

“So you could actually technically call this a sequel,” Wingard admits. “It’s in the same universe.”

Their upcoming feature Wildwood is no exception, with theater chains like AMC already listing the hotly anticipated book adaptation on their websites with a surprisingly hefty runtime of two hours and twenty minutes. Not only is this nearly 40 minutes more than Laika’s musical epic Kubo and the Two Strings (their longest movie to date), but the runtime also cements Wildwood as the longest stop-motion animated film of all time!

The previous contender for the record was Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio back in 2022, with that Academy-Award-winning project clocking in at 117 minutes.

Naturally, a longer film doesn’t necessarily translate to a better moviegoing experience, but given Laika’s track record with deeply compelling (and often horror-adjacent) stories that can be appreciated by audiences of all ages, I’d wager that every single second of Wildwood will be worth the price of admission.

Based on Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis’ New York Times Bestseller of the same name, Wildwood hits theaters on October 23.

Blumhouse teases, “Some things are better shared in a room full of horror fans.”

Taking place on Friday, October 9 at 5:30pm, BlumFest 2026 will see Blumhouse and Atomic Monster pull back the curtain on its upcoming slate of films, TV shows, and games.

“Expect never-before-seen footage, candid filmmaker conversations, and the last-minute surprises that BlumFest is known for.”

The panel will be taking place on the Empire Stage, and BlumFest is being paired with an exclusive look at Violent Night 2 in addition to a conversation about the upcoming film.

BlumFest first began back in 2020, and the event has become an annual tradition.

Hayden Panettiere of course played Kirby Reed in Wes Craven’s Scream 4 and then later the Radio Silence-directed Scream VI, one of the most beloved characters in the entire saga. Like Randy Meeks before her, Kirby Reed was a diehard horror fan who represented the very fans watching the movies, with fan demand leading to the character’s return to the screen in Scream VI.

Even though it appeared that Kirby had been killed off in Scream 4 back in 2011, fans spent the next decade rallying behind the “Justice for Kirby” campaign that ultimately led the franchise to reveal that she had in fact survived the events of the fourth installment. And that’s a testament to Panettiere’s performance in the film, bringing to the screen a character that in only one movie had become as beloved and memorable as some of the franchise’s top recurring characters.

The tributes that have been pouring in the last couple days include memories from fellow franchise stars including David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Emma Roberts, and Melissa Barrera.

Neve Campbell said in a statement to USA Today, “I found Hayden to be really kind and funny and brought a magnetic energy to set. She was a true talent which shows in the decades she worked in such a short life. Her family and loved ones are in my prayers.”

“Sending my love to Hayden and her family,” David Arquette wrote in an Instagram story. “She was such a brave and brilliant soul.”

Melissa Barrera tells USA Today, “I’m still in shock. Hayden should still be here. I feel so incredibly lucky that I got to grow up watching her and admiring her, and that I got to know her and share the screen with her. She will always be an icon in my book. Her strength and her light, despite everything she went through, were so evident and will always stay with me. I am forever grateful to her because she showed up for me when no one else did. That was just the kind of person she was: A rare, honest, badass who felt so deeply. Such a heart-shattering loss. My condolences and love to her mother, her beautiful daughter, and her loved ones.”

Jenna Ortega also posted to Instagram, “This is such a devastating loss. Rest well.”

Scream 4 co-star Emma Roberts wrote in an Instagram post, “Rest in peace my sweet friend. You are so loved and you will be forever missed.”

Original Scream star Jamie Kennedy tweets, “Such a sad, tragic loss for such a young, talented, beautiful woman. Rest in Peace Hayden. May God protect your soul. ScreamFam 4ever.”

Heather Matarazzo, who appeared in Scream 3 and Scream (2022), remembers: “We first met on the LIRR traveling to NYC for auditions when we were both kids. Every time our paths crossed, my heart always filled up. She was special. She was a Sprite of a being and such a talent. Truly a light….. Love you, Hayden.”

And a Scream 4 background actor named Kathryn Henzler shared a touching memory of her own on Twitter. She recalls, “I want to share something about Hayden Panettiere that will forever stay with me. My twin sister and I were background actors on the set of Scream 4, and were in the scene where Stab-A-Thon takes place in a barn. It was hot, dark, and buggy the whole night we were shooting, yet Hayden was nothing but nice to everyone around her, even chatting with background actors and complimenting their acting choices. Super professional, supremely talented, and just a lovely person to be on set with in the not-so-great conditions. Humble, kind, gone too soon.”

While he was done with playing Ash in the world of live action, however, Campbell had been leaving the door open to the idea of voicing Ash in an Evil Dead animated project.

That door, it seems, has now been closed as well.

Campbell tells Screen Rant in a new chat, “Ash is done. [I am] not going to do any animated voice work. [They] can get Joe Ash soundalike. There are ways to [recreate my voice] now.”

No word yet on whether or not any sort of animated Evil Dead project will be moving forward, with or without Bruce Campbell, as we haven’t heard any updates on that for a while now.

But it seems Bruce Campbell has ended his direct involvement with the franchise both in front of as well as behind the camera, choosing to focus on other life and career aspirations.

UPDATE: August 20, 2026 – 3:30pm ET – Bruce Campbell has released a new statement on this matter. He writes on Twitter, “Apologies if this news seems new. It’s hard to communicate everything with everyone. I tapped out after AVED. Mostly, the reasons were ability and interest, in equal measure. I didn’t want Ash to be compromised by declining skills and as a borderline Geezer, my interests have diverged. I’ll always love Evil Dead to death – literally.”

After grieving in private, his family announced on social media that the artist passed on February 10.

“We understand that learning of this loss so long after his passing may come as a profound shock. Please know that this time was kept quiet until now as a deeply personal choice to allow our family the necessary time and space to process the shock, heal, and hold space in complete privacy, in the wake of overwhelming grief, as he would have wished. We had to find our footing before stepping into the public eye. We appreciate your understanding and respect for our privacy during this time,” the post reads.

The family statement continues, “We invite you now to celebrate the legacy of Screaming Mad George – the internationally acclaimed special makeup artist, creature and effects designer, filmmaker, musician, educator, and artist.”

“As an artist, Screaming Mad George possessed a singular vision and an extraordinary imagination, creating worlds unlike any others,” the statement goes on to say. “Yet behind his larger-than-life artistic presence was a man who was cheerful, approachable, warm-hearted, and deeply compassionate. Though often described as a genius, he was equally defined by his tireless work ethic, humility, and generosity of spirit. Those who met him were often struck not only by his talent, but by his authenticity and kindness.”

Born in Osaka in 1956, Screaming Mad George moved to New York at 18 to pursue a career as a painter. It was there that the multihyphenate talent formed punk rock band THE MAD and taught himself special makeup effects to enhance the band’s performance and theatricality.

That would lead him to film, where the artist was mentored by SFX titan Rick Baker and would later work for Stan Winston Studios.

Screaming Mad George, real name Joji Tani, quickly developed a reputation for the surreal. In addition to delivering one of horror’s wildest sequences from Society, the artist is also responsible for that gnarly cockroach kill from A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master, the Lovecraftian gorefest of Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest, the creature-effect heavy Guyver adaptation, raucous sideshow comedy Freaked, and so much more.

George was also a frequent collaborator with Brian Yuzna, working on Bride of Re-Animator, Return of the Living Dead III, and more. 

His contributions to horror are immeasurable, and this loss is deeply felt. We send our deepest condolences to Screaming Mad George’s family, friends, and many fans.

Screaming Mad George is survived by his wife Miki and their daughter Alice.

Hayden Panettiere played the beloved character Kirby Reed in Wes Craven’s Scream 4, and later reprised the role after much fan demand in Scream VI.

Panettiere’s acting career dates back to 1996, with notable roles also including A Bug’s Life, Remember the Titans, “Ally McBeal,” Bring It On: All or Nothing, and “Heroes.”

She also starred in the hit survival horror video game Until Dawn in 2015, further cementing Hayden Panettiere’s status as a beloved actress in the horror space.

Scream VI marked Hayden Panettiere’s return to acting in 2023, and she also appeared in the recent genre movies Amber Alert, A Breed Apart, and Sleepwalker.

We send our deepest condolences to Panettiere’s family, friends and many fans.

A personal friend of Coscarelli’s, Bannister first played the badass ice cream man Reggie in the original Phantasm back in 1979, later reprising the role in Phantasm II (1988), Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead (1994), Phantasm IV: Oblivion (1998), and Phantasm: Ravager (2016).

His iconic role in the Phantasm movies made a horror icon out of Reggie Bannister, who amassed over 50 film and television credits in the wake of the original horror classic. Bannister also appeared in Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation, Wishmaster, Bubba Ho-Tep, The Mangler Reborn, Cemetery Gates, The Rage, Doctor Spine, Bonejangles, and Killer Waves 2.

Don Coscarelli writes on social media tonight, “I lost my hero yesterday. I am very sorry to report that my dear friend and collaborator, Reggie Bannister, died yesterday at age 80.”

“In the Phantasm series, only Reggie could turn a simple role as an ice cream vendor sidekick into an unlikely action hero for the ages,” Coscarelli’s tribute continues. “He channeled himself into that role. All the fans who met him at the horror conventions could attest that in-person, Reg was cool, funny, loyal, and steadfast. Reggie the character was Reggie the friend. In real life, he embodied all the qualities of his character in Phantasm and no one questioned that Reg was that guy, the one willing to lay his body down on the fires of hell for his friends.”

Coscarelli also notes, “Along the way, Reggie kept up his music, releasing many well-received albums. He also partnered with his wife Gigi Bannister in a successful entertainment production company, Production Magic Inc., producing live event, musical and film projects.”

“Reggie Bannister was a gifted creative collaborator, a dear friend and he will be sincerely missed,” Don Coscarelli ends his tribute to Bannister. “Yes, Reg, to me and your legion of fans, you’ll always be Hot as Love.”

We’ll also have killer photo ops, free podcast merch, and a number of Halloween giveaways courtesy of Street Food Cinema. In fact, they have a couple creepers stopping by — including Remmick, who will be back for this October’s outdoor screening of Sinners.

That’s not all! In partnership with Bleecker Street, Bloody Disgusting and The Mystic Museum will be hosting an immersive and interactive photo op for Victorian Psycho, due in theaters November 13th. That all goes down at Booth 553, where the Mystic will also be promoting their forthcoming haunts for the season. Be sure to stop by and get a physical photo to take home with you!

Midsummer Scream is the world’s largest Halloween and Horror Convention, often described as Southern California’s kick-off of the Halloween season. Bloody Disgusting was founded 25 years ago (!!!) on one simple idea: we wanted to bring horror fans together. In our early days things like the message boards, Movie Pit and user community were a core part of what made Bloody Disgusting feel special. As BD grew and the internet evolved, things changed for all of us and those spaces were unfortunately stripped away in favor of social media and broader platforms.

Today we’re all very excited to take a first step towards bringing that sense of community back with the launch of the Bloody Disgusting Horror Movie Database.

Think of it as the reanimated (and modernized) corpse of our old Movie Pit where you can build your profile, rate films, create public or private lists, and discover what other fans are watching. Use it to find your next film to watch, follow other horror fans, or just leave your stamp on the horror community.

This is very much in beta, but it’s the start of building a home for the horror community again.

Let us know your honest thoughts, if you find any bugs, and what kinds of features you’d like us to add. We already have a whole slate of features and ways to tie it all more deeply into Bloody Disgusting that we’re getting ready to roll out, but this is meant to be a home for horror fans so we want YOU to help us shape it.

Tom Savini writes on Instagram, “Jim Krut, one of my dearest friends, has passed away. We did college together, did plays, did movies, did horror conventions. I personally cast him as the Helicopter Zombie in Dawn of the Dead. He was a genuinely good person. Will miss you pal.”

Jim Krut’s character in the horror classic was of course named after a memorable moment of Tom Savini gore from the film. Helicopter Zombie quite literally gets the top of his head sliced off by a helicopter blade, becoming one of the film’s most enduring images.

So memorable was Jim Krut’s brief appearance in Dawn of the Dead that Krut was a popular guest at horror conventions for decades after the release of the zombie horror classic.

Jim Krut appeared in dozens of indie horror movies in more recent years, including Zombthology, Deadlands 2: Trapped, Dead Island, Flesh of the Living, Ghosting, Bottom Creek, Return of the Slasher Nurse, Remnants, Darkness Waits, Full Moon Fever, Coffintooth, Blood and Breakfast, and Heavy Duty Man just last year, as well as the upcoming The Barn: Part III.

Russell’s career began with his directorial debut, 1987’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

The multihyphenate film director, screenwriter, and producer is best known for helming 1994 comedy The Mask starring Jim Carrey, Arnold Schwarzenegger actioner Eraser, and adventure spinoff The Scorpion King. The latter served as the first leading role for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

The filmmaker left an indelible mark on horror with his ANOES sequel, 1988’s The Blob, and 2000’s Bless the Child.

Russell’s final film credit is 2024’s Witchboard remake starring Madison Iseman (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Aaron Dominguez (Only Murders in the Building), and Jamie Campbell Bower (“Stranger Things”).

It marked Russell’s return to horror after a lengthy hiatus, and he shared sequel hopes to Bloody Disgusting in an interview ahead of the remake’s release: “I got to design the board with real mystical symbols and things that I know represent good and evil, and where that board takes us if the audiences respond to the film, and I hope they will; I know it’s out there for you guys, but the sequel is a world we’ll get to go a little further. That’s sure the intention.”

He also recently expressed interest in returning to the franchise that began his career.

TMZ notes that Russell passed away at his San Diego-area home.

For those not in the know, Scare zones are themed, open-air areas where guests and actors roam around freely.

This is the first time Fortnite will be featured during the after-hours event, which will run from August 28 until November 1. Tickets and packages are on sale now at the official site.

Per the press release, guests will enter Freaky Fields, a Halloween-inspired living battleground that’s been “overcome with a threatening force.” From there, fans will meet up with the Battle Bus, featuring familiar Fortnitemares characters, including “a few new additions exclusive to Halloween Horror Nights.”

And of course, there will be Fortnitemares merchandise available for fans, including a graphic t-shirt, decal set, and an acrylic collectible piece.

Fortnitemares won’t be the only featured property at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights. Killer Klowns from Outer Space will also be getting its own scare zone. Sinners, Stranger Things, Hellraiser, and Evil Dead Burn will also be part of the event, though they will be relegated to their own specific houses.

And while it’s early yet, gamers can probably expect Fortnitemares to return to Fortnite this October.

The young actress was just 18 years old.

Deaf actress Kaylee Hottle played Jia in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, a character introduced in Godzilla vs. Kong. She later reprised the role in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Just last year, Kaylee Hottle was nominated for a Saturn Award for her performance in Godzilla x Kong. She competed in the “Best Younger Performer in a Film” category.

TMZ notes, “Kaylee – an Atlanta native – comes from a multi-generational deaf family. She got her start in commercials, notably a PSA for the live video messaging app Glide, which is used by many members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, when she was 9 years old.”

Hottle had also appeared in an episode of the “Magnum P.I” reboot series in 2021.

Neill had been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer in 2022, but stated the following year that he was in remission. The family notes that he “remained cancer free” at the time of his passing.

The family statement reads, “It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.

“They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care. More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”

In addition to his iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant in the original Jurassic Park and the sequels Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World: Dominion, Sam Neill left an indelible mark on the horror genre with memorable roles in Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession, The Omen: The Final Conflict, John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness, and sci-fi horror favorite Event Horizon.

Sam Neill’s vast resume in film and television began in the early 1970s and also includes the films Sleeping Dogs, Enigma, The Good Wife, A Cry in the Dark, Dead Calm, The Hunt for Red October, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Hostage, The Jungle Book, Snow White: A Tale of Terror, The Horse Whisperer, Bicentennial Man, Daybreakers, Escape Plan, and Thor: Ragnarok.

Sam Neill is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren.

Steven Spielberg said in a statement to Variety, “I owe a debt of gratitude to Roger Donaldson, Gilliam Armstrong, Graham Baker and Phillip Noyce for casting Sam Neill in the roles in which he was so brilliant that brought him to my attention and led to his playing Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park. Sam was exceptionally collaborative. It was a stretch for him to play a character who acted as though children were messy and smelly because this was the opposite of the loving father he was to his children. I adored making all the Jurassic movies with him.”

Spielberg adds, “Along with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, we will always have our Jurassic family and Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world.”

In a chat with Variety this week, Jason Universe’s Robbie Barsamian teases that everything we’ve seen up to this point is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Jason’s return.

“We’ve been busy behind the scenes laying the foundation that everyone is finally starting to see come to life, but this is just the tip of the iceberg,” Barsamian teases.

“We have a thrilling lineup of new projects that we can’t wait to share more details on soon.”

Barsamian also notes during the chat with Variety, “We want to give fans fresh takes on what they love most about Jason and continue to expand his world in authentic ways that resonate with horror fans today.” One of those expansions will take the form of the upcoming Peacock and A24 series “Crystal Lake,” which stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees.

“The Crystal Lake TV series will take fans back in time to tell the story of how Pamela Voorhees came to be the mother of all slashers,” Barsamian tells Variety this week.

“Crystal Lake” premieres October 15 on Peacock.

Callum Vinson (“Chucky”) is playing young Jason in “Crystal Lake,” which will tell the origin story of the masked slasher who has stalked the grounds of Crystal Lake for decades.

Last year, the Jason Universe team had teased that a new movie and a new video game are top priorities for the near future. But at this time we have no updates on either front.

Creep I.E. Con, one of Southern California’s biggest horror themed conventions, returns for an Aftermath in 2026 — two months earlier than usual! This weekend, the Ontario Convention Center will house over 30 celebrity guests, 170 vendors, and all kinds of tricks and treats courtesy of Bloody Disgusting.

The main event is Saturday night at the Creep I.E. Cinema featuring a screening of 1988’s Child’s Play with stars Brad Dourif, this week’s Emmy-nominee Fiona Dourif, and Alex Vincent. Note: This is a separately ticketed event within the weekend, so be sure to secure your tickets for the screening and Q&A before they’re all gone.

Beyond the silver screen, Bloody Disgusting will also be hosting panels with stars of the Scary Movie franchise (Tori Spelling, Lochlyn Munro, Simon Rex, Jon Abrahams); return to Spooky World with David Bertolino; take a trip to Woodsboro with Hayden Panettiere; revisit Tales from the Crypt with John Kassir; and go toe to toe with Danny Trejo.

That’s not all. On Saturday at noon PST, we’re hosting an exclusive photo opportunity at our Bloody Disgusting booth (#300) with the titular terror behind Pinocchio Unstrung. The empathetic Carla Gugino gives her all as Ellen, a saint of a woman with boundless patience who takes on life’s hard luck with a kind smile. After giving up her career as a fashion designer to become caretaker for a dying mother, she’s then forced to reinvent herself once more when her caretaker role ends. That catches us up to the events of Lockbox, where Ellen is asked to take in a cousin she hasn’t seen in quite some time who’s dealing with severe PTSD.

Just as Ellen finally establishes a real connection with Winthrop (Lou Taylor Pucci), it’s interrupted by the arrival of peculiar neighbor Vahna (Katharine Isabelle), who spells clear trouble. When Vahna shows up dead, it sets in motion a supernatural battle of possession.

Director Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism, Prey for the Devil) and screenwriter Justin Yoffe approach Lockbox in the broadest of brushstrokes, dooming it from the start with clunky storytelling and woefully underdeveloped themes of heady topics like PTSD. Winthrop is a character that comes loaded with emotional baggage and trauma that’s piled on throughout his tragic life, but much like its title, his interiority and history are treated like a tightly guarded secret meant to prolong the supernatural mystery.

The problem here, though, is that Lockbox is too sparse to sustain mystery at all, and it instead robs Winthrop of characterization. It winds up trapping the talented Pucci without anywhere to go, toggling between wounded animal and mentally disoriented. 

From there, Lockbox bounds through plot developments without any sense of stakes or purpose, peppered by a smattering of haphazard paint-by-numbers jump scares. The only unwavering constant is Ellen’s resolute faith, and Stamm seems to leave it entirely to Gugino to guide confused audiences through this inconsequential story right up until its supernatural climax.

To give more credit, Lockbox at least injects an unconventional exorcism here; just don’t expect much in the way of explanation. When the film finally reveals the meaning behind its title, it dangles a fascinating carrot it has zero interest in delivering. More than a severe lack of fleshing out its characters beyond plot drivers or devices, this faith-based flick also seems terrified to offer any worldbuilding whatsoever. 

Yoffe’s script stretches the short story beyond its means instead of fleshing it out, and Stamm fills out the gaps with cheap CGI scares and overwrought performances; Isabelle’s Vahna is beyond cartoonish in her villainy. It’s also pretty nonsensical, treating only Ellen’s faith with the utmost sincerity and largely squandering its typically reliable talent. So much so that the final imagery, pure sunkissed saccharine sentimentality, leaves you with the feeling that this horror movie might be better suited as an entry in Chicken Soup for the Soul. 

Lockbox releases in select theaters on July 3, 2026.

GARF shared in a statement on socials, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Suzanne Desrocher Romero. Suzanne passed away of natural causes on June 24 at her home in Toronto after a prolonged illness.”

The statement continues, “Suzanne was the fierce leader of the George A. Romero Estate and The George A. Romero Foundation. She worked tirelessly to preserve George’s legacy. Her work at the foundation will continue to inspire and live on for generations to come. The family asks for privacy at this time.”

Desrocher-Romero founded GARF in 2018, after her late husband’s passing in 2017, and has been a fierce advocate for his legacy and the arts. It was her mission to “strengthen horror as a serious field of global study,” and she was a tremendous fighter on behalf of Romero’s works and supporting new filmmakers inspired by his legacy.

It was Desrocher-Romero who spearheaded the recovery and restoration of The Amusement Park, and, as the person in charge of the George A. Romero estate, worked closely with author Daniel Kraus on completing unfinished novels like Pay the Piper and The Living Dead. She most recently celebrated the restoration of her favorite of Romero’s zombie films, Day of the Dead, and was hard at work producing the upcoming film Twilight of the Dead.

That passionate advocacy led to Suzanne Desrocher-Romero becoming family to Bloody Disgusting as well.

2023 marked the start of an ongoing partnership between Bloody FM and GARF on The Dead, a scripted audio series spanning multiple seasons that saw Desrocher-Romero working closely with the Bloody FM team and mentoring the series’s contributing writers with GARF. To say her loss will be felt internally is an understatement. 

“Anytime George Romero is mentioned is good, because what we are doing is to provide a healthy legacy. We’re uplifting his legacy, we’re supporting the archive, and we’re also supporting the Horror Study Center. So, all of these three things are what the Foundation is striving to do. As far as I’m concerned, the more we say George Romero’s name, the better it is,” Desrocher-Romero recently told BD. 

It’s the perfect encapsulation of her unwavering enthusiasm for supporting Romero’s legacy and the horror genre, and just a glimpse at how much she contributed to preserving it. She is, in short, an inspiration.

Writer/director Alex Cherney (The Have Not, Dog Fugitive), whose work encompasses multiple genres and is often inspired by real-life people and events, draws from Long Island’s colorful paranormal history for his enigmatic and creepy YA horror film The Mid-Night Driver.

In 1992, Long Island, teenage friends June (Fran Mae), El (Izzy Marinucci), and Claire (Devan Delugo) enjoy an evening of hanging out and playing video games, until they get bored and decide to look for something more exciting to do. June tells her friends a story she heard about a boy who played a game to summon a cab driver, called the Mid-Night Driver, and the boy was never seen again. The girls are intrigued.

June carefully writes down detailed instructions for a ritual, which must be performed after 3 am. Later that night, the girls sit around the telephone in the dark, count aloud, dial a series of numbers on the phone, tie a black rope to the phone’s receiver, then say, “Hello, I need a ride,” and hang up and wait for the driver to appear. In addition to performing the complex ritual, there are rules that must be followed. The most important rule is that you’re not allowed to ask the driver any questions. When nothing happens, the girls are happily relieved and maybe a little disappointed.

After all, it’s just a game.

When Claire is unable to stop thinking about the Mid-Night Driver game, she decides to perform the ritual alone one night while her parents are away. This time, a driver silently pulls up in front of her house. He has long, stringy hair, a scar on his face, and ragged, dirty fingernails. Despite his appearance, Claire gets into the car. They drive in silence until Claire tries to strike up a conversation. The strange man doesn’t answer or look at her; his peculiar, intense eyes stay focused on the road ahead.

Composer sous chef’s (Santamaria, Pick Me Up!) darksynth score, reminiscent of Stranger Things and Donnie Darko, sublimely accentuates The Mid-Night Driver’s frequent nighttime scenes and sense of mystery and the unknown, as Claire wonders if she will ever make it back home. Claire is visibly shaken riding in the car with the unknown man, but Devan Delugo (Your Vote Matters) makes her charmingly relatable and superbly conveys Claire’s excited inquisitiveness about where her journey will end. Claire isn’t just curious; she needs something to believe in.

While Cherney impeccably constructs an atmosphere of overwhelming dread and wonder throughout the film, The Mid-Night Driver features a pleasant array of early nineties nostalgia that movie fans of a certain age will appreciate. With no gore or graphic imagery, but plenty of supernatural scares, The Mid-Night Driver is a family-friendly YA horror tale. It’s good to be curious. Just remember, if you summon the Mid-Night driver late one night, you must follow the rules.

The outlet reports, “The actress’ boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, tells TMZ … Daveigh died Tuesday from meningitis and an infection in her blood, which caused her to have septic issues and led to her body shutting down.” The website’s report continues, “We’re told Daveigh had been admitted to a hospital in Los Angeles earlier this month because of malnutrition.”

Here in the horror world, a young Daveigh Chase memorably played Samara in Gore Verbinski’s 2002 horror movie The Ring, the American remake of the Japanese horror hit.

Far outside the horror world, Daveigh Chase voiced Lilo in the 2002 animated movie Lilo & Stitch, a character she continued to voice in various animated spinoff projects.

Chase also appeared as Samantha Darko in the 2001 classic Donnie Darko, later returning to play the sister of Donnie Darko in the 2009 spinoff movie titled S. Darko.

Daveigh Chase’s resume also includes roles on the TV shows “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” “Charmed,” “ER,” “Touched by an Angel,” “CSI,” “Cold Case,” and 32 episodes of “Big Love.”

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

As if cleverly timed releases like Puppet Combo’s The Backrooms game weren’t enough (not to mention that Scary Movie poster poking fun at Parsons’ flick), McDonald’s official social media accounts have now released an analog horror video of their own celebrating the liminal terrors of the McRooms – complete with a familiar purple surprise at the end of the footage.

While it’s funny enough to see the world’s most recognizable Fast Food giant engage with internet-borne Found Footage thrills seemingly out of the blue, the video is actually referencing a long-running gag among the Backrooms fandom where creators jokingly talk about there being a fully functional McDonald’s restaurant hidden somewhere in level 0 of the infamous liminal labyrinth.

Now, would it be too much to hope for a moist-carpet-flavored McShake to tie in with the film?

Backrooms is now playing only in theaters from A24.

Joe Bird (Talk to Me) and Stacy Clausen play star-crossed teenage boys alongside a cast that includes Mia Wasikowska (Crimson Peak), Jeremy Blewitt, Ewen Leslie (The Nightingale), and Davida McKenzie (Silent Night).

“Leviticus is a strong debut with an incisive voice at the helm,” Meagan Navarro wrote in her review out of Sundance. “We care deeply about Naim and Ryan’s survival, making Leviticus a tense, atmospheric, and claustrophobic vision of young love in a hateful world.”

In Tribe, a retired university lecturer named Devin Adams is documenting the symptoms of a strange illness as he spirals into paranoia and fractured memory.

As he revisits old videotapes, he begins piecing together the events that led him into a nightmare involving conspiracies, ancient creatures and cataclysmic cosmic horrors.

Described as a “sexy, bloody slasher” starring real-life porn stars, the attention-grabbing queer horror movie Blowie was released on digital outlets today from Dark Star Pictures.

The film follows a group of sex workers who rent a remote mansion to shoot OnlyFans content…until a tragic accident unleashes Blowie: a doll-faced killer with a thirst for vengeance.

Bishop Black, Kali Sudhra, Kayden Gray, and Gabriel Cross star.

Blowie is written by altSHIFT, and directed by Ed Aldridge, altSHIFT and Sam Lidbetter.

The news comes courtesy of Robert Rhine from Girls and Corpses Films, the label behind Yoshihiro Nishimura’s brand new upcoming action/horror movie Geisha War.

Yoshihiro Nishimura is known for his gory blasts of insanity including Tokyo Gore Police, Helldriver, and Mutant Girls Squad, as well as the more recent film Holy Mother.

Nishimura was known by many as “the Tom Savini of Japan” thanks to his gory special effects makeup in both his own movies and countless movies made by other filmmakers.

As an effects artist, Nishimura worked on films including Suicide Club, Meatball Machine, Exte: Hair Extensions, The Machine Girl, RoboGeisha, and the list goes on and on.

Nishimura had just completed and edited his latest film Geisha War, an American/Japanese co-production between his company Eixo Film and producer Robert Rhine of Girls and Corpses Films. “I will be finalizing Geisha War in Nishimura’s memory and we will find a great distributer for this amazing film, Nishimura’s last, to show to the world,” assures Rhine.

“I am devastated by the sudden loss of my great friend Yoshihiro Nishimura who only two weeks ago was on a live Zoom call with us following the screening of our film Geisha War,“ Robert Rhine tells us. “It had been a dream of mine to work with Nishimura and I flew to Kyoto last October (with our lead actor Costas Mandylor) to film at Hikone Studios. Nishimura was a brilliant filmmaker and true artist who inspired many filmmakers, such as Quentin Tarantino. It is a great loss for the indie horror community and Nishimura’s fans around the world.”

While Curry Barker’s film is masterfully written and directed, making audiences both fear and feel for Navarrette’s “Freaky Nikki” in equal measure, there’s no overstating the amount of tortured humanity that the actress brings to the table with this new horror icon.

However, just in case you still find yourself wishing for more Inde Naverrette once the credits roll (and who could blame you after such a memorable film?), we’ve decided to shine a light on a few of Naverrette’s upcoming projects.

Just keep in mind that Obsession’s success is still a relatively recent phenomenon, so we’ll likely have even more announcements regarding Naverrette’s future roles in the coming months.

Invertigo (TBA)

From the director of Cockneys vs Zombies and the producers behind 2022’s unexpected hit Fall, the upcoming survival thriller Invertigo follows a group of teenagers who sneak into an amusement park in order to try out a roller coaster before its official debut. Naturally, things go horribly wrong when a technical malfunction leaves the group stranded hundreds of feet in the air.

Inde Naverrette is almost certainly playing one of the reckless youngsters trapped aboard the coaster, with the movie appearing to be a less-wintery take on the isolated thrills of Adam Green’s massively underrated Frozen. That’s why I think horror fans would do well to keep an eye on this upcoming release!

Kids of the Black Hole (TBA)

A microbudget indie drama originally crowd-funded through Indiegogo, Dylan Ellis’ Kids of the Black Hole follows an ensemble of teenagers forced to reflect on their past mistakes after an attempted robbery goes horribly wrong.

Inde Navarrette is set to play a troubled teen named Emma in the film, with her role having been shot all the way back in 2018. However, while the flick appears to have been trapped in post-production hell, The buzz surrounding Inde’s performance in Obsession is likely responsible for the project finally getting off the ground – though there’s still no confirmed release date.

HOPEFULLY Curry Barker’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre ?!

Given Obsession’s impressive box-office numbers and early studio reactions to the upcoming horror-comedy Anything but Ghosts, it makes sense that Hollywood would allow Curry Barker to use his particular brand of unhinged horror to revamp an existing franchise. And while nothing about this project is set in stone, it would make a lot of sense for Barker to capitalize on Obsession’s success by teaming up with Inde Navarrette once again in his as-yet-untitled addition to the Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise.

As our own John Squires pointed out on X, Inde could just as easily play a terrified victim of Leatherface and company or a deranged member of the cannibalistic family itself. Barker is almost certainly aware of this as well, so I think it’s safe to say that there’s a big chance that this collaboration is being discussed as we speak!

The screenplay is written by Zachary Donohue (The Den) and T.W. Burgess (Mister Howl). Former Warner Bros production executive Walter Hamada, who steered the Conjuring and It franchises, is producing via his 18hz as part of his first-look deal with Paramount. It screenwriter Gary Dauberman is also producing via Coin Operated.

la Repubblica reports that Eastman passed away after a brief stay at the Gemelli Curae clinic in Rome following deteriorating health.

Eastman, born in Genoa on August 16, 1942, as  Luigi Montefiori, was a former rugby player turned actor and screenwriter who, looking to break into film, chose an American stage name after the originator of photographic film and founder of the Kodak Company.

His hulking 6’9″ frame and menacing exterior made him a regular in spaghetti westerns as the Heavy and a formidable villain in horror. Eastman’s career spanned everything from westerns, horror, thrillers, post-apocalyptic science fiction, erotica, and television. 

While Eastman notably terrorized as one of the villains in Mario Bava‘s sadistic road thriller Rabid Dogs, it was the actor’s close friendship with Italian horror filmmaker Joe D’Amato that is most notable for horror fans. His frequent collaborations with D’Amato yielded both acting and screenwriting credits: Absurd (1981), Red Blood (1981), and sexploitation films like Erotic Nights of the Living Dead (1980) and Porno Holocaust (1981).

That creative partnership would lead Eastman to helm his own feature to date, 1990’s sci-fi horror movie Metamorphosis, under the pseudonym G. L. Eastman. 

George Eastman’s storied career spans all genres and paired the filmmaker with Italy’s most prominent filmmakers, from Mario Bava to Sergio Martino to Enzo G. Castellari and Lamberto Bava.

The story of Sadako/Samara all began in 1991 with Koji Suzuki’s Japanese novel Ring, which formed the basis for Hideo Nakata’s 1998 film and soon thereafter the Gore Verbinski-directed American remake in 2002. The one two-punch of terrifying films about a little girl emerging from a well spawned a wave of Japanese horror films that overtook America in their wake.

One of those movies that helped define the “J-horror” movement was Dark Water, first a Japanese horror movie in 2002 and later an American movie in 2005. Much like Ring a few years prior, the Japanese version of Dark Water was directed by Hideo Nakata, but both films were based on a 1996 short story penned by, you guessed it, Ring creator Koji Suzuki.

These are just a small handful of horror movies based on the works of Koji Suzuki, with his body of work inspiring films including Spiral, The Ring Virus, Ring 2, Ring O: Birthday, The Ring Two, Open Water 2: Adrift, Sadako 3D, Sadako vs. Kayako, and Rings. Suzuki’s tale Dream Cruise also became the 13th and final episode of Showtime’s “Masters of Horror” series.

Koji Suzuki was indeed a master of horror in every sense, his nightmares helping to define an entire era of horror that terrified audiences throughout the late 1990s and 2000s. It’s hard to imagine the landscape of the genre without films like The Ring, Dark Water, and the films that were directly inspired by them, and none of that would’ve happened without Koji Suzuki.

There’s a reason Koji Suzuki was known as “the Stephen King of Japan.” Like King, Suzuki’s work will endure and inspire for many, many generations to come. All of us here at Bloody Disgusting send our deepest condolences to Suzuki’s family, friends, and many fans.

The screenplay is written by Zachary Donohue (The Den) and T.W. Burgess (Mister Howl). Former Warner Bros production executive Walter Hamada, who steered the Conjuring and It franchises, is producing via his 18hz as part of his first-look deal with Paramount. It screenwriter Gary Dauberman is also producing via Coin Operated.

Xavier Gens (Under Paris, Frontier(s)) will direct from a script by Elisa Bell (Vegas Vacation) and Travis Gordon, which has been likened in spirit to 10 Cloverfield Lane.

In the film, during a heart-breaking domestic revelation, three star-crossed Americans are suddenly forced to work together to survive a terrifying unexplained global event that threatens to destroy life as they know it.

Producers include Denise Di Novi, Margaret French Isaac, & Oliver Scherick for Di Novo Pictures (Practical Magic) and John Zois & Warren Goz for Parallel 42 Entertainment.

Williams will executive produce alongside Michael Rothstein & Samuel Hall for North.Five.Six, which is launching sales at next week’s Cannes film market. CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group co-rep domestic rights.

“I found the script riveting, and it had a depth that continued shifting and revealing itself as I read,” said Williams. “Then, knowing Xavier’s work, I was very eager to work with this talented filmmaker. I’m grateful to be part of this team and this project.”

“I was immediately drawn to how Homewrecker blends psychological tension with something deeply character-driven,” added Randolph. “It has a kind of intensity and unpredictability that makes it such a compelling project. I’m so excited to be part of this with Allison and Xavier.”

“It’s so funny, because literally every barometer we use in the industry to determine whether or not a movie is good, and people like it and want to see it, was through the roof, and yet our box office wasn’t there,” director Nia DaCosta tells Empire of her sequel.

“I made a great film, and I’m really proud of it, and people liked it,” she adds.

The films, shot back-to-back, were released just seven months apart. DaCosta wonders whether it was “maybe too soon, because people were like, ‘Oh yeah, I saw that last summer!’ I’m like, ‘No, no, so there’s a sequel!’”

Despite the underwhelming performance, DaCosta stands by her work.

“When this came out and it didn’t do as well in terms of the money it made, I was disappointed,” she admits. “But I also was like, ‘I’m so happy that when people find the film, they’re going to enjoy the film.’ I wish it made more money, but I’m really proud of it.”

Written by Alex Garland, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple finds Dr. Kelson in a shocking new relationship — with consequences that could change the world as they know it — while Spike’s encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can’t escape.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her 4-skull review, “Director Nia DaCosta takes the reins with fearless gusto, making this entry wholly her own while pushing the overarching story and its richly layered themes into darker, grislier, funnier, and more poignant territory.”

The question remains whether Sony will complete the 28 Years Later trilogy. The studio was developing the third installment — with Garland penning the script, Danny Boyle attached to direct, and Murphy in talks to star — but there have been no updates in the wake of The Bone Temple’s release.

TMZ reports, “Tiersten passed away last week at his home in New Jersey, according to his brother, William Tiersten. The medical examiner is investigating Jonathan’s cause of death.”

Jonathan Tiersten played Angela’s (Felissa Rose) cousin Ricky in the original 1980s slasher classic, a role he later reprised in the 2008 sequel Return to Sleepaway Camp.

Sleepaway Camp marked the teenage Tiersten’s feature film debut, and he returned to the horror genre decades later in a handful of films including The Perfect House, Redemption, Blood Reservoir, The House That Wept Blood, Terror Tales, Lake of Shadows, Toilet Zombie Baby Strikes Back, Last American Horror Show: Volume II, and the slasher Time’s Up.

In addition to his acting work, Jonathan Tiersten was also an accomplished musician. His IMDb bio states, “As a singer/songwriter, Tiersten made his presence felt on the Greenwich Village folk-rock/roots rock circuit in the late 1980s and early 1990s as one-half of the acoustic duo The Magic Box. Tiersten (whose first solo album, Heaven, was released in 1998) also has been a member of the alternative funk-rock band Gaphiltaphunk, and now leads the band TEN TIERS, whose debut album, Don’s Club Tavern: Part 1, was released in 2006.”

“Music is an enormous passion for me. Music is not what I do. It’s who I am,” he once said.

Beau Starr played the character Sheriff Ben Meeker in both Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989).

Starr later returned to the horror genre to work with Dario Argento, appearing as the character Chief Charlie in his “Masters of Horror” episode titled Jenifer (2005).

Outside of the horror genre, you probably recognize Beau Starr from movies including Summer School, Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, and Chevy Chase comedy Fletch.

Beau’s younger brother Mike Starr tells TMZ that he passed away peacefully of natural causes in Vancouver, Canada on Friday, April 24.

Beau Starr played for the New York Jets in the NFL before breaking into acting, going on to make over one hundred appearances in both movies and television.

Starr’s credits include “Three’s Company,” “St. Elsewhere,” “Hill Street Blues,” “V,” “The A-Team,” Hollywood Vice Squad, “Matlock,” “True Blue,” Speed, “The Outer Limits,” Devil in a Blue Dress, “NYPD Blue,” “Due South,” Mercy, Cinderella Man, and “The Dead Zone.”
