There’s Something Keeping ‘DayZ’ From Coming To The Xbox One

Apparently, the only thing that’s keeping DayZ lead designer Dean Hall’s survival game from coming to the Xbox One is Microsoft’s self-publishing restriction, which keeps indie developers from being able to get their games on the console without the aid of a publisher. On top of this, Microsoft charges a hefty fee for developers to update their games once they’re live. Most indie devs are strapped for cash as it is, so many can’t afford paying five figure fees to patch their games. This caused some controversy for Microsoft when Fez developer Phil Fish refused to pay Microsoft $40,000 to fix a critical bug in his game.

It’s worth mentioning that Sony’s PlayStation 4 has no such restrictions, making it a more welcoming platform for indie devs looking to get their games out to the public. More on DayZ’s possible arrival on the Xbox One after the jump.

[E3 2013] First In-Game Footage From ‘DayZ’ Standalone

Earlier today, developer Bohemia Interactive released a handful of new screenshots from the upcoming DayZ standalone, and now, we’re getting our first look at the game in action. Now, before you dive into the video I have waiting for you after the jump, remember, this is alpha footage. That means it’s buggy and unpolished. The final product will look and play significantly better than what’s being showed off at E3 right now.

Want a nice long look at the upcoming DayZ standalone? Unfortunately, I don’t have a video. What I do have is a fresh batch of screenshots from the upcoming game, exhumed by developer Bohemia Interactive for your viewing pleasure. The beauty of a screenshot is you can stare at it for as long as you want.

DayZ is currently undergoing playtesting in closed alpha and hasn’t been given an official release date. As soon as I find out when it’s coming you can be sure you’ll be the first I come running to with the news. Until then, enjoy these new screens.

‘DayZ’ Enters Closed Alpha, Creator Details Pricing Model

Dean Hall and his team have been hard at work on DayZ, the post-apocalyptic zombie survival mod that will soon become a standalone game — and possibly come to consoles — and it would seem they’re still on track. In a recent interview with Gamasutra, Hall described how players can get into the closed alpha, saying “What we’re doing at the moment is, we gave free keys as a gift to the forum moderators, the Reddit moderators, people who helped out with DayZ development, and stuff like that.” He went on to confirm the DayZ public alpha will not come sooner than June, after they’ve thoroughly tested the server-client architecture.

As for how much the standalone game will cost, Hall said “People pay X amount of dollars and they get early, cheap access to it, and then once it’s beta, price goes up, maybe, say, $10, and once it goes retail, the price goes up $10.”

PAX East Panel Video And Screens Emerge From ‘DayZ’ Devblog

After numerous delays the DayZ standalone sure has been taking its sweet time getting here. At least we can take comfort in the fact that the team behind it are hard at work on bringing us an open-world zombie MMO we’ve been clamoring for after The War Z failed to bring the goods. On top of that, they’ve been very good at releasing a steady stream of information, screens and videos from the game to keep fans pumped.

In their latest offering, we get a look at a new environment — a massive, explorable shipwreck — and a video blog taken at PAX East last month. Check them out after the jump.

‘DayZ’ Creator Is Interested In Console Port

The Escapist had a chat with DayZ creator Dean Hall at GDC last week and managed to glean a bit of exciting information from him about the game’s future. When asked about a console port, Hall said “Certainly I think if we don’t, for want of a better word ‘fuck up,’ the PC release then I would say a console port is almost certain.” So there’s a good chance it will come to consoles, though as of now no port is in development.

Is a console version of DayZ something you would be interested in, and if so, which console would you prefer to see in on?

‘DayZ’ Standalone Alpha Won’t Arrive Until June At The Earliest

Fans were hoping to get their hands on the DayZ standalone last year, but that didn’t happen so Dean Hall and his team could introduce some major changes to the game. Speaking with Joystiq, Hall provided an update on the game’s progress, saying the earliest we can expect the alpha version is in June. That’s when they’ll begin sending out batches of keys to several thousand players to test how the servers handle the increased load.

Hall is also looking into launching a tiered distribution model, inspired by Kickstarter, so players can pay to get into the alpha as well as get other DayZ goods. If June is just too far away, you can grab the mod now available on Steam, or enjoy this new fan-made DayZ web series.

Your Mission, Should You Choose To Accept It, Is To Watch This Live-Action ‘DayZ’ Web Series

The folks at DDay Hollywood have decided to take DayZ into the real world with a new web series called “Apocalypse DayZ.” It’s a parody of the game that features a few familiar Youtube faces like Tay Zonday (Chocolate Rain!) and Lauren Francesca. If you’re itching for some DayZ action as we all patiently wait for Dean Hall and friends to release the standalone game, then this might tide you over until then. Might.

‘DayZ’ Team Posts New DevBlog Detailing Zombies, Inventory And More

The DayZ team have released a second DevBlog video update (you can find the first one here) detailing more of the new features that will be in the upcoming standalone. For starters, the game now spawns around 3,000 zombies. Good luck running from that. It’s a bit of a slow watch, and a little over twenty minutes long, but it’s crammed with new info and footage that makes me excited for this game. Check it out after the break.

Can’t Wait For The ‘DayZ’ Standalone? Now You Can Get The Mod On Steam

If you want to get your zombie apocalypse survival on but lack the patience to wait for the DayZ standalone, coming later this year (hopefully soon), I might suggest getting the mod on Steam. If you own Arma 2 and its expansion Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead — or the Arma 2: Combined Operations bundle — than nothing is stopping you from getting the mod. It’s free, so there isn’t much risk involved. If you haven’t purchased Arma 2 yet then you won’t have to wait long. In a recent Reddit AMA, DayZ creator Dean Hall said he expects the standalone to release before April.

‘DayZ’ Creator Takes To Reddit To Vent Over ‘The War Z’ Controversy

Dean Hall, creator of DayZ, the post-apocalyptic Arma II mod that received quite a bit of attention when it released last summer — enough so to warrant the development of a standalone game — isn’t very happy with The War Z. In case you missed the game’s tumultuous launch, after its release many fans found its Steam description to be a little misleading, eventually leading to its removal from Steam and a public apology from its executive producer. Bad news all around, really.

Unfortunately, because of their similar titles, Dean Hall has had friends and family who have confronted him after confusing DayZ with the controversy surrounding The War Z. This has caused some issues for Hall, who decided to vent on Reddit earlier this week. Read what he had to say after the jump.

[FEAR AWARDS] Vote On Your Most Anticipated Horror Game Of 2013!

THE RESULTS ARE IN!

It’s that time of the year again, folks! I hope you aren’t too tired from all the egg nogging, snowman crafting, slay bell jingling, and sloppy mistletoe kissing you undoubtedly put yourself through last month, because we have some voting to do. For the unfamiliar, the FEAR Awards is something we started here at Bloody Disgusting back in 2009 when we realized there are a ton of best and worst games lists and awards, but none that gave much attention to the horror genre. We decided to create this so we could celebrate the many horror (and horror adjacent) games that release every year.

This year we’re doing things a little differently. Every day we’re going to post a category and a batch of nominees for you to vote on, then when the votes are tallied we’ll reveal the results. Today we’re asking which horror game that’s releasing this year has you the most excited — vote after the break!

‘DayZ’ Didn’t Make Its 2012 Release So Dev Team Could Make It Even Better

DayZ was supposed to release late last year. Obviously, that didn’t happen, but the dev team has a good reason for the delay: they wanted to make the game even better. The developer posted an update on their blog, saying “Put simply, DayZ Standalone isn’t here because we had the chance to go from making a game that was just the mod improved slightly, packaged simply, and sold – to actually redeveloping the engine and making the game the way we all dreamed it could be. This blew any initial plans we had dictated to pieces.” More after the jump.

[Boredom Bytes] ‘DayZ’ Spectacular: Ghillie Suit Slenderman, Stalkers, And Psychos!

I’d like to forget about all that War Z nonsense, and what better way to get that game out of our minds than with a special DayZ edition of Boredom Bytes! After the break I’ve collected several of my favorite videos I’ve seen from the game so far, including a poor guy getting chased by a mysterious man in a ghillie suit, another poor guy getting chased by a total psycho, and two more poor guys getting chased by a Pac-Man ghost. They’re all pretty great.
