Mark-Paul Gosselaar (“Saved by the Bell”) starred in FOX’s “The Passage”, a vampire series from executive producer Ridley Scott, based on Justin Cronin’s best-selling fantasy book trilogy, that premiered back in January. The first season came to an end in March, and we’ve sadly learned today that the Season 1 finale has just been made into the *series* finale.

As reported by Deadline, Fox has cancelled “The Passage” after one season.

The reason? As per usual, the ratings just weren’t strong enough.

In the series:

When a botched U.S. government experiment turns a group of death row inmates into highly infectious vampires, an orphan girl might be the only person able to stop the ensuing crisis.

The cast also included Vincent Piazza as Clark Richards, Brianne Howey as Shauna Babcock, Jamie McShane as Dr. Tim Fanning, Caroline Chikezie as Dr. Major Nichole Sykes and Emmanuelle Chriqui as Dr. Lila Kyle.

Christopher Golden and Tom Sniegoski’s Boom! Studios comic book series Talent was at one point set to receive a feature film adaptation, but The Wrap is reporting out of the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour today that the comics are instead headed to the small screen courtesy of Fox.

The site reports, “The broadcaster has given a script plus significant penalty commitment to the one-hour drama, with an eye to hand the project a straight-to-series order from “Justified” creator Graham Yost.”

In Talent, “When Nicole Dane wakes up in a hospital, she learns she is the sole survivor of a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 148 people. As rumors around her “miraculous” survival begin to swirl, Nicole discovers she has inherited the talents of those who perished. Armed with these new abilities, she must use her second chance to bring closure to their unfinished stories and solve the mystery of the accident, all while trying to escape a past that continues to haunt her.”

Yost will write and executive produce the series, with Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Toby Jaffe, Stephen Christy and Ross Richie also executive producing.

Comic writers Christopher Golden and Tom Sniegoski will co-executive produce.

The WSJ has some intel on Disney‘s acquisition of 20th Century Fox and shares some not-so-surprising news that will still dishearten us genre fans.

Within the report, they explicitly point out that Disney plans to utilize the Avatar and X-Men franchises, “and scale back production of costly movies that don’t fit its family-friendly, franchise-focused formula.” They share a handful of examples, and although none are horror, it’s pretty clear that this could be the end to the Alien/Predator franchises and hopes of any other Fox-fueled horror films. Could they sell or move the assets? It’s possible, but unlikely.

What does this mean for New Mutants? The article notes that Disney plans to release any films that are “complete or in production at the time of acquisition.” The vagueness doesn’t help speculate, but it’s hard to imagine New Mutants opening wide, unless Fox was able to get it into theaters before the official takeover next year. Still, I’m expecting to see this one get dumped onto a streaming service or VOD platforms if it doesn’t end up on a shelf collecting dust for the rest of eternity.

Even more awful, WSJ suggests it’s possible (not certain) that Disney shuts down 20th Century Fox for good, which would be a cataclysmic and heartbreaking Hollywood event after 83 years in business. However, thanks to Guillermo del Toro‘s The Shape of Water, they’re hearing that Fox Searchlight and Fox 2000, as well as the animation division, could/should remain intact.

In the end, history is at stake, not to mention 2,300 employees’ jobs. This is a dark takeover for a company that’s built on the roots of the “Happiest place on Earth.” Outside of hardcore Marvel fans, this is borderline devastating for everyone else.

Ahead of the Season 3 finale earlier this month, FOX announced that they were pulling the plug on “Lucifer,“ when means the recent season finale was actually the series finale. But fans of the show still have something to look forward to, as the network announced today that two brand new episodes of “Lucifer” are coming right up!

Say what?!

The two bonus episodes will air back-to-back on Monday, May 28, and they were apparently shot for the fourth season that of course didn’t end up being ordered by FOX.

First, in “Boo Normal”…

“Lucifer and the team investigate the murder of a child psychiatrist as Ella thinks about a big childhood secret that she’s been hiding.”

And then, in “Once Upon a Time”…

“After Lucifer’s mom creates an alternate dimension, Lucifer now lives in a world where he not only has never met Chloe but is granted the freedom of choice.”

In “Lucifer,” Lucifer Morningstar has decided he’s had enough of being the dutiful servant in Hell and decides to spend some time on Earth to better understand humanity. He settles in Los Angeles – the City of Angels.

Fox has been axing shows left and right, pulling the plug on “The Last Man on Earth,” “Brooklyn 99” and “The Mick” just yesterday. Today, they’ve announced that “Lucifer” will soon be no more, as the show has been cancelled ahead of the Season 3 finale.

Actor Tom Ellis, who played the series’ sexy Satan, just tweeted the following:

“It has been the most amazing experience over the past 3 years playing Lucifer and falling in love with you, the fans. It fills me with great sadness to confirm the rumours that some of you have been asking. Fox has indeed cancelled #lucifer I’m so sorry guys. #gutted“

The ratings for “Lucifer” had still been pretty strong in its third season, dipping slightly under 3 million viewers of late. The season started with nearly 4 million tuning in.

In “Lucifer,” Lucifer Morningstar has decided he’s had enough of being the dutiful servant in Hell and decides to spend some time on Earth to better understand humanity. He settles in Los Angeles – the City of Angels.

We’re still waiting to hear about the fate of Fox’s “The Exorcist,” which the network hasn’t yet made a decision on. In the meantime, we’re happy to report that Fox has ordered “The Passage” to series, a vampire show that they shot a pilot for last year.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar (“Saved by the Bell”) stars in the series, from executive producer Ridley Scott. Jason Ensler (“The Exorcist”) directed the pilot episode.

Via Deadline, “The Passage is an epic, character‐driven thriller about a secret government medical facility experimenting with a dangerous virus that could either cure all disease or cause the downfall of the human race. The series focuses on a 10‐year‐old girl named Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney), who is chosen to be a test subject for this experiment and Brad Wolgast (Gosselaar), the federal agent who becomes her surrogate father as he tries to protect her.”

The cast also includes Vincent Piazza as Clark Richards, Brianne Howey as Shauna Babcock, Jamie McShane as Dr. Tim Fanning, Caroline Chikezie as Dr. Major Nichole Sykes and Emmanuelle Chriqui as Dr. Lila Kyle.

The series is based on Justin Cronin’s best-selling fantasy book trilogy.

It’s been almost two years since the second season of the M. Night Shyamalan-produced “Wayward Pines” came to a close, leading us to wonder if FOX had lost faith in a series that many didn’t even think would make it to a second season. As of last summer, FOX still hadn’t made a decision, but now they’ve sadly decided to get off the pot.

Variety reports tonight that FOX has cancelled “Wayward Pines” after two seasons.

“Shyamalan directed the pilot and shepherded the series with original showrunner Chad Hodge about a Secret Service agent who discovers strange happenings in a small Idaho town,” Variety notes. “Stranger Things creators Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer worked on the first season of the show as co-exec producers.”

A total of 20 episodes aired across the show’s two seasons.

Forget everything you know. The truth is closer than ever.

Personally speaking, I’ve been enjoying the hell out of the eleventh season of “The X-Files” so far, which is now three episodes deep with the fourth airing tonight. It’s nothing short of a gift to see Mulder and Scully back on screen together, very likely for the last time, and oh boy has the show been giving us some great banter/moments between the two.

Coming hot off last week’s “Plus One,” which was vintage “X-Files” fun, David Duchovny is promising that tonight’s Darin Morgan-penned “The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat” is going to be another winner. Over on Twitter this morning, Duchovny called it one of his personal favorite episodes not just of this season, but of ALL TIME.

Including tonight’s, seven episodes remain in Season 11, and FOX just unleashed a mid-season trailer that previews the next batch of episodes. While Mulder and Scully continue searching for William and questioning Skinner, it looks like a terrifying new monster is headed our way in the coming weeks, apparently an alien-human hybrid!

Things are about to get BANANAS, just the way we like our “X-Files.”

After a Thanksgiving hiatus, “The Exorcist” returns to FOX tonight, December 1, for the eighth episode of its second season. The season has been pretty insane thus far, notably shocking us with a massive twist about a creepy little girl and surprising us yet again with the reveal of which character is possessed by a demon this time around.

It’s… an adult male?! Well, that’s a new one. And that’s what the show has been all about: delivering fresh twists and doing the franchise’s name, at long last, so very proud.

“The Exorcist” has once again been bringing the goods this year, and we wanted to recap some of Season 2’s best moments while you wait for the new episode. Who better to do that for us, we figured, than star Ben “Marcus Keane” Daniels himself!

Read (and watch) along as Ben recaps his favorite moments from Season 2 so far…

Episode 3, “Unclean”:

“Episode 3 is when season 2 really started to stake its territory as a totally unique horror show. It is directed by horror boss Ti West; as soon as he was on board not only was I flat out excited (House of The Devil is hands down one of the best horrors of the last decade), but knew he was made of the right stuff to take us on the slow burn journey to that surprising, unsettling climax.

This scene is when Marcus and Tomas try to get the demon to manifest in Harper, played by the oh so talented Beatrice Kitsos.”

Episode 4, “One for Sorrow”:

“Anybody who’s ever suffered a bout of sleep paralysis will have had their buttons pushed when Li Jun Li’s Rose wakes up in the middle of the night to find a shadow man lurking with intent in her bedroom in Episode 4. Terrifying!”

Episode 5, “There But for the Grace of God, Go I”:

“Episode 5 has a sequence where everybody’s favourite demon child (!!!SPOILER!!!) Grace uses a doll as a witchcraft poppet to remote control Truck. We were blessed with amazingly talented young actors this season (Cyrus, Amélie and Brianna are fantastic here) and under the direction of brilliant Alex Garcia Lopez, this section is as horrifying as it is nauseating. Kudos also to our amazing sound design team…..thud, thud, thud.”

Episode 5, “There But for the Grace of God, Go I”:

“Again from Episode 5, Father Tomas experiences the demon’s possessions and brutal murders throughout the ages first hand. My wonderful compadre Alfonso Herrera is always totally compelling to watch and he’s at his finest here in this dreamlike ghost train sequence, taking us on the ride as he lurches through, and feels, the pain and terror of each onslaught.”

Episode 6, “Darling Nikki”:

“You could stick a pin anywhere in Episode 6 and find a chunk o’ horror to delight all tastes. I think it’s my favourite Exorcist episode to date. It’s so taut and it grips a vice-like clammy hand around the throat to the explosive finale. I was scared watching it and I knew what was around each corner. I love working with Jason Ensler (he’s directed 5 of our 20 episodes), he’s incredibly trusting as a director and gently steers everyone so you’re all firing in the same place.

It’s hard for me to choose just one piece but the most fun I’ve had on set for a long time was a long nine page scene (which is really rare in television) where Marcus is chasing the demon out of Andy. Over tea! John Cho is a brilliant actor, he’s very present which means you can hurl anything out at him and he’ll pick it up and hurl it right back. The scene took about 14 hours to shoot and each take was around 10 minutes long.”

Episode 7, “Help Me”:

“In Episode 7, we see an exorcism from the demon’s point of view. Having watched probably every possession movie ever made I’m pretty sure that’s a first. I can’t remember seeing it before. The exorcists are seen by possessed Andy as demons. Alfonso and I had the best time screaming around the room as demonic versions of Marcus and Tomas for a couple of days wearing ridiculously sharp false teeth, accidentally biting the insides of our mouths and laughing hysterically. Fortunately it all looks terrifying.

We even got to do The Exorcist version of the mannequin challenge……yes that’s not a special effect, it’s us standing still take after take. FYI my drool is all my own work. #proud”

The truth is closer than ever.

Back in January 2016, Mulder and Scully returned after a 15 year absence in a brand new revival season of “The X-Files,“ which ended up being successful enough that FOX ordered up another season. When can you dig into Season 11?

FOX revealed today that “The X-Files” will re-open on January 3, 2018!

EW recently previewed the first three episodes…

“After episode one delves into the Cigarette Smoking Man’s (William B. Davis) backstory and apparent family ties to Mulder, the second hour opens with a time jump to put distance between Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) and the events of the premiere. And episode three is a darkly comedic hour, penned by Carter, focusing on doubles and doppelgängers.”

They continued, “But beyond the humor, the larger mythology of The X-Files — like the fallout from Scully’s abduction and the chip that was implanted in her neck — continues to shape Mulder and Scully’s world.”

Most of Season 11 will be devoted to “monster of the week” episodes.

Mitch Pileggi, Annabeth Gish and Barbara Hershey are confirmed for the new season.

Daniels deserves a nomination for this past Friday night’s episode alone.

It’s no secret that major awards ceremonies rarely spread any love to the horror genre. Notoriously, the Academy Awards have honored horror movies on only a small handful of occasions, while the Emmy Awards similarly pay little attention to the genre – despite horror being hotter than ever on the small screen for the last several years.

Go figure.

Sure, mainstream series’ like “The Walking Dead” and “American Horror Story” have found themselves on the Emmy radar, but you’d be hard pressed to find other horror series’ that have had the same luck over the years. Can you believe, for example, that Mads Mikkelsen was *never* nominated for his performance in “Hannibal”?!

Another actor who has thus far been snubbed at the Emmys? Ben Daniels, whose character on “The Exorcist” has been one of the best on the small screen since the series debuted on FOX last year. And in the now-running Season 2, Daniels continues to deliver a powerhouse performance that commands attention.

You need only look to a select few scenes from Season 2 to see why Daniels deserves an Emmy nomination for the role of Marcus Keane, an exorcist haunted by both his own past and the terrifying work he’s dedicated himself to.

In the episode prior to this past Friday night’s, “There But for the Grace of God, Go I,” Keane almost literally bared his soul to a new love interest; Daniels’ monologue, recounting the character’s past and digging deep into the daily horrors that torment him, displayed some of the finest acting work I’ve seen on the small screen all year.

Keane is a man haunted, and you feel that pain in his every word and facial expression.

Daniels once again delivered a powerful, gripping performance in the most recent episode of “The Exorcist,” titled “Darling Nikki.” The centerpiece of the episode was Marcus trying to provoke a response from the demon that has wormed itself into Andy; sitting across from him on the couch, Marcus pushed and taunted Andy in the hopes that the demon would make a mistake and show itself. The scene may have appeared, on the surface, to be a conversation between two men, but Daniels and John Cho brilliantly sold it for what it really was: a verbal sparring session between man and demon.

“The Exorcist” is currently the scariest show on TV, but what makes it all work is just how strong the acting is. And as one of the series’ two titular characters, it’s Ben Daniels who is unquestionably shining brightest, consistently developing Marcus Keane into the most compelling character on horror television right now.

Here’s hoping the Emmys can break past their surface level dismissal of the horror genre and see the brilliance of what Ben Daniels has brought to the screen this year.

He has damn sure earned that nomination.

After a one-week hiatus, “The Exorcist” returns tonight, November 3!

The second season of “The Exorcist” has taken Marcus and Tomas to a whole new location to battle a whole new demon, which means that Season 1’s Rance family has not in any way been part of the story. But will we see any of those Season 1 characters pop up at all here in Season 2?

Yes, actually!

Taking to Twitter yesterday, creator Jeremy Slater posted a fun video teasing the return of actress Hannah Kasulka, who plays the daughter of Angela Rance aka Regan MacNeil!

After seeing the video, we reached out to FOX, who confirmed to us that it was indeed a teaser that Casey Rance will be back at some point this season.

In which episode, you ask? You’ll have to keep tuning in to find out!

In Season 2 so far…

After a one-week hiatus this past Friay night due to World Series preemption, “The Exorcist” returns to FOX this coming Friday night, November 3rd, at 9/8c.

We’ve thus far been treated to four episodes of Season 2, which have primarily focused on three main storylines. While Tomas and Marcus have been on the road taking on an array of different cases, one that brilliantly subverted the tropes of the possession sub-genre by delivering a surprising twist, we’ve been hanging out with a brand new cast of characters: the kids who occupy a foster home run by actor John Cho’s Andy.

Meanwhile, the conspiracy within the church has heated up, being investigated by Father Bennett as well as another new character, a badass female exorcist named Mouse.

Tomas and Marcus have finally arrived at the aforementioned foster home, where something *really* strange is afoot. Another massive twist shocked us all in Episode 4.

But video is better than words. So check out a 9-minute recap of “The Exorcist” Season 2’s first four episodes below, which ends with a new sneak peek of Episode 5!

In “There But for the Grace of God, Go I,” airing November 3, “The demon finally makes its presence known; Andy, Rose and the children are set on a collision course with the supernatural presence; Disturbing new information about the conspiracy comes to light.”

That creepy little girl with the mask just became so much creepier.

FOX’s “The Exorcist” has a way of going places you never expected it to, most notably with the totally unexpected Season 1 reveal that Geena Davis’ Angela Rance was actually Regan MacNeil from the original film! Almost exactly one year later, the show has once again blown our minds with a crazy twist.

Throughout the first four episodes we’ve gotten to know Grace (Amélie Eve), a little girl at Andrew’s (John Cho) foster home who’s not exactly like the other kids. Grace has severe agoraphobia, refusing to leave the house or even interact with her brothers and sisters. Oh and Grace often likes to hide her face by wearing a handmade pillow mask.

*This is your spoiler warning*

So what’s the deal with Grace? Well, last night’s episode ended with the totally out of left field reveal that… Grace isn’t actually real. Yeah, they Sixth Sense‘d us.

In the chilling final moments of Episode 4, titled ‘One for Sorrow,’ Verity (Brianna Hildebrand) went upstairs to what we had thought was Grace’s bedroom, discovering a room loaded with creepy artwork and rotten food. Suddenly it all made sense why Grace only talked to Andy: only Andy can see her, and the room appears normal only to him.

As creator Jeremy Slater explained on Twitter after the episode last night, the idea here is that Grace is merely the form a demon has taken to seduce and possess Andy.

“So for anyone asking why we haven’t had a demonic ‘Salesman’ this season, there’s your answer,” Slater tweeted. “She’s been here all along.”

After a one week hiatus, “The Exorcist” is sure to be crazier than ever when it returns to FOX on Friday, November 3. Slater promises a “monster of an episode“!

Preview ‘There But for the Grace of God, Go I’ below.

“All nature will be renewed by fire.”

Tonight’s brand new episode of Fox’s “The Exorcist” is particularly exciting, as it was directed by none other than Ti West (V/H/S, The House of the Devil, The Sacrament)!

In “Unclean,” which should make for perfect Friday the 13th viewing, “Marcus and Tomas travel to Seattle where they find a young girl targeted by a force of pure evil.”

We can exclusively reveal ahead of the episode that we’ll meet brand new character Mouse in it, portrayed by Zuleikha Robinson (“Lost”, “The Following”). As creator Jeremy Slater explained to us, Mouse is “our first Female Exorcist.”

He continued, “As a woman, she was not sanctioned or taught by the Church, so Mouse had to go to other religions and spirituality to train herself. And her methods are far different than the typical “Ritual and Repetition” taught by the Catholics to drive out demons. As her unofficial contact told Bennet: ‘Try not to let her have a gun.'”

Meet Mouse in an exclusive Episode 3 clip below!

In the new season…

“Six months after leaving Chicago, Father Tomas continues his training to become an exorcist under the watchful eye of his partner Marcus Keane. Their travels lead them to a troubled young woman in rural Montana, where their investigation puts them in the crosshairs of her extended family. But as Tomas’ skills continue to grow, Marcus begins to worry that his apprentice is taking unnecessary risks.”

“The action then switches to a secluded private island off the coast of Seattle, where Andy Kim (John Cho, “Star Trek,” “Harold & Kumar”) runs a group home for at-risk foster children, whose lives are disrupted when the state sends a social worker (Li Jun Li, “Quantico,” “Blindspot”) to determine whether the foster home should be closed. Little do they know the true danger is yet to come: a malevolent presence that has set its sights upon one of the children in Andy’s care.”

The main Season 2 cast includes Alfonso Herrera as Father Tomas Ortega; Ben Daniels as Father Marcus Keane; John Cho as Andy Kim; Kurt Egyiawan as Father Bennett; Brianna Hildebrand as Verity; Zuleikha Robinson as Mouse; and Li Jun Li as Rose.

“The Exorcist” is from Morgan Creek Productions in association with 20th Century Fox Television. The series was created by Jeremy Slater. Slater, Sean Crouch, Rupert Wyatt, Roy Lee, James Robinson, David Robinson and Barbara Wall exec produce.

“The Exorcist” is back this Friday. And we cannot wait.

This Friday, September 29, marks the premiere of the second season of Fox’s “The Exorcist,” which is set to put our titular heroes Tomas and Marcus into a whole new location to deal with a whole new form of evil.

One thing we’re only now learning about Season 2?

Ti West, known for horror gems The House of the Devil, V/H/S, Innkeepers and The Sacrament, directed the season’s third episode, titled “Unclean”! In West’s episode, which star Ben Daniels tweeted out a behind the scenes picture of today, “Marcus and Tomas travel to Seattle where they find a young girl targeted by a force of pure evil.”

West has previously directed episodes of “Scream” and “Wayward Pines.”

In the Season 2 premiere, titled “Janus”…

“Six months after leaving Chicago, Father Tomas continues his training to become an exorcist under the watchful eye of his partner Marcus Keane. Their travels lead them to a troubled young woman in rural Montana, where their investigation puts them in the crosshairs of her extended family. Easily the most infamous episode of “The X-Files” was Season 4’s ‘Home,’ centered on Mulder and Scully’s investigation of the Peacocks, a family of deformed farmers who have not left their secluded house in a decade. The episode proved to be so controversial that FOX decided to not even re-air it.

Via EW today, ‘Home’ actress Karin Konoval, who played the episode’s unforgettable amputee under the bed, will return to the series for next year’s Season 11.

“While Karen Konoval won’t be reprising her role as the mother-under-the-bed in the fan-favorite episode ‘Home,’ she will be returning in a tour-de-force performance in an early episode,” Chris Carter told the site. “Or, more accurately — performances.”

Be afraid. Be kind of afraid.

FOX’s new comedy series “Ghosted,“ starring Adam Scott and Craig Robinson as spoof versions of Mulder and Scully, will be premiering on the network on October 1.

However, in an interesting move, the series premiere will actually now be debuting on Twitter over a week earlier!

A partnership between FOX and Twitter will see the season premiere of “Ghosted” streaming nightly on Twitter at 9 p.m. EST, September 21 through 24.

Be sure to follow @GhostedonFOX to catch the premiere on one of those nights!

In the single-camera, action-comedy…

LEROY WRIGHT (Robinson) is a cynical skeptic and former missing persons detective, who, if we’re speaking frankly, thinks that “aliens” are a big ole bunch of B.S. and that people who believe in them are certifiably nuts…People like MAX JENNIFER (Scott). Max is a genius “true believer” in the paranormal who’s convinced his wife was abducted by aliens. At low points in their lives, both Leroy and Max are recruited by CAPTAIN AVA LAFREY (Ally Walker), a take-no-prisoners, former Air Force test pilot and head of the Bureau Underground, a secret government organization investigating paranormal cases.

Lafrey, along with her staff – BARRY SHAW (Adeel Akhtar), an overly friendly forensic pathologist, and DELILAH WARD, a highly opinionated tech specialist – will support Leroy and Max in their quest for answers. Now, this heroic group of underdogs will look into “unexplained” activity in Los Angeles that often leads them to scary, thrilling and hilarious places, as they attempt to uncover the truth and keep the earth rotating on its axis for at least one more day.

“You’re gonna see new types of horror scenes. You’re gonna see scenes so scary that we’re still not quite sure how we’re gonna get them on network TV.”

Jeremy Slater, creator of FOX’s “The Exorcist,“ makes some pretty bold claims about the forthcoming second season of the series in this brand new first look video, which teases a season that looks to be very different from the first. Marcus and Tomas are back, but the story and setting will take the series down a terrifying new path.

“You’re going to get more of everything that makes The Exorcist great,” Slater promises in the preview video, which you can watch below ahead of next week’s premiere.

The new season premieres Friday, Sept. 29 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

In the Season 2 premiere…

As previously noted, Season One stars Geena Davis, Hannah Kasulka, Brianne Howey and Alan Ruck will NOT be coming back… but they COULD have cameos at some point.

“The Exorcist” is from Morgan Creek Productions in association with 20th Century Fox Television. The series was created by Jeremy Slater. Slater, Sean Crouch, Rupert Wyatt, Roy Lee, James Robinson, David Robinson and Barbara Wall serve as executive producers.

Not only is “American Horror Story” back but “The Walking Dead,” “Channel Zero” and “Stranger Things” are also all on the horizon. With Halloween approaching, the small screen is going to be dominated by horror, and I personally cannot wait for “The Exorcist” to return to FOX.

Ahead of the premiere later this month, we got our hands on the first teaser as well as a cast photo that reveals several of the new characters we’ll be meeting in Season 2.

Check out both below.

In one of the most brilliant twists in television history, we learned about halfway through the first season of FOX’s “The Exorcist” that Geena Davis’ Angela Rance was actually Regan MacNeil, firmly connecting the series to the film franchise as a decades-later sequel. So then, will the forthcoming second season have any ties to the film franchise?

Not exactly, but creator Jeremy Slater did tease some connections in a chat with THR.

“There’s a moment from The Exorcist III that every horror fan knows and loves. We’re looking into how we can get that moment in our show this year. It involves a hospital. It’s the single best jump scare in horror movie history aside from Ben Gardner’s head coming out of the boat in Jaws,” Slater teased. “Also, I love the idea of a demonic serial killer. We’re not exactly doing the Gemini Killer (Brad Dourif) this year with the new demon. But, I think you are going to see that this demon has a pattern and a methodology. It’s a boogeyman throughout history that has claimed a lot of notches on its belt. It’s nowhere closer to being finished.”

In the same interview, Slater noted that Season 2 will have an early Spielberg influence, with “some Poltergeist in there.” He also hopes that the cast of young actors this time around will bring an IT/”Stranger Things” vibe to the new season.

Opening an entirely new chapter in the iconic franchise, this year’s second season of “The Exorcist” finds Father Tomas Ortega (Alfonso Herrera) and a newly collarless Marcus Keane (Ben Daniels) out of Chicago and on the road, searching out evil.

“Across the Atlantic, Father Bennett (Kurt Egyiawan) attempts to weed out those within the Vatican who have turned against God. Ultimately, Tomas and Marcus are led to Andrew Kim (John Cho), a former child psychologist who runs a group home for five at-risk foster children on a secluded private island off the coast of Seattle.”

“When one of the children under Andrew’s care is targeted by a powerful force, the two priests head west, setting themselves on a collision course with Hell.”

Zuleikha Robinson, Li Jun Li and Brianna Hildebrand also star.

Marcus and Tomas are ready to exorcise some more demons.

We may be two months away from the Season 2 premiere of FOX’s “The Exorcist,“ but believe it or not, filming only just began this week.

Straight from the set, Ben Daniels just shared a photo of he and co-star Alfonso Herrera back in action, and we wanted to share it with you because it made us smile.

After all, it wasn’t long ago that we were sure we’d never see these two together again!

Evil has a new home this September.

We’re still thrilled that FOX renewed the surprisingly incredible “The Exorcist” for a second season, which is headed our way this coming Halloween season. As Deadline notes, the cast and creative forces will be signing autographs at San Diego Comic Con this weekend, and they also got their hands on the mini-poster they’ll be signing this Thursday (Booth #4229).

This is our first official look at Season 2. Check it out down below.

Opening an entirely new chapter in the iconic franchise, we’ve learned that the second season of “The Exorcist” finds Father Tomas Ortega (Alfonso Herrera) and a newly collarless Marcus Keane (Ben Daniels) out of Chicago and on the road, searching out evil.

Across the Atlantic, Father Bennett (Kurt Egyiawan) attempts to weed out those within the Vatican who have turned against God. We couldn’t have been happier to learn last month that FOX had renewed “The Exorcist” for a second season, which is headed to the network on Friday nights this coming Fall. The fear was that the incredible series, a sequel to the original film, would go the way of “Hannibal,” and we’re positively thrilled that FOX surprised us with the renewal we had been craving.

So then, what can we expect from Season 2? TV Line reports today that Season 1 stars Geena Davis, Hannah Kasulka, Brianne Howey and Alan Ruck will NOT be coming back. This comes as no real surprise, as Season 1 seemed to completely wrap up the story of the Rance family.

Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels and Kurt Egyiawan will be back as series regulars.

This all lines up with what creator Jeremy Slater told us last year.  “A potential season two would find Marcus, Tomas and Bennett tasked with helping a new family or a new case of possession,” he shared with us ahead of the renewal. “Our challenge now is to create a new family that you care about just as much as the Rances, and to find ways to make their story feel just as compelling and unique as what came before.”

“That doesn’t mean we’ll never see any of the Rances again,” he teased.

A new beast that smartly tied into William Friedkin’s classic film, the Jeremy Slater-created series won us over in a big way; but would FOX renew it for a second season or did not enough people tune in to give the show any kind of longevity? We had been worried in recent months. Honestly, we were convinced it was dead.

Thankfully, we were wrong.

We’re incredibly excited to report tonight that FOX has just renewed “The Exorcist” for a second season! Season two of the contemporary psychological TV thriller from 20th Century Fox Television will open a new chapter of the iconic franchise.

Back in December, Slater exclusively shared with us details about what he hoped to do with the second season:

“A potential season two would find Marcus, Tomas and Bennett tasked with helping a new family or a new case of possession,” Slater explained. “That doesn’t mean we’ll never see any of the Rances again, but I think the fans would feel disappointed and cheated if we simply brought Captain Howdy back for round three. The Rances have escaped this legacy of terror–for the time being, anyway–and it seems cruel to immediately drag them back for ten more episodes of suffering. Our challenge now is to create a new family that you care about just as much as the Rances, and to find ways to make their story feel just as compelling and unique as what came before.”

He continued: “We would always continue to expand our mythology moving forward. We know that Maria Walters and Superintendent Jaffey and Cardinal Guillot are still out there somewhere, but I think the conspiracy probably runs much deeper than that. When we left our heroes at the end of the first season, they were part of only a handful of people on the planet that know this conspiracy is taking place, that evil is infiltrating every level of church and state.” Click here for the entire interview.

You rule, FOX. You rule so hard.

At the start of this year, FOX gave a pilot order to “Ghosted,“ a supernatural comedy which has been described as a spoof of the network’s own series “The X-Files.” The pilot, which hails from 3Arts, Gettin’ Rad Productions and Twentieth Century Fox Television, had Craig Robinson and Adam Scott attached to star, and we’ve just learned FOX has given it a full-on series order.

THR reports today that the half-hour series was picked up by FOX as one of two new comedies for the 2017-18 season. The series will center on a cynical skeptic (Robinson) and a genius “true believer” in the paranormal (Scott) who are recruited by The Bureau Underground to look into the rampant “unexplained” activity in Los Angeles — all while uncovering a larger mystery that could threaten the existence of the human race.

Tom Gormican (That Awkward Moment) penned the script and executive produces alongside showrunner Kevin Etten, Robinson, Adam and Naomi Scott, 3 Arts’ Oly Obst, Mark Schulman and Jonathan Krisel, with the latter having directed the single-camera comedy pilot.

Meanwhile, 10 new episodes of “The X-Files” are also coming soon!

When “Sleepy Hollow” debuted in September of 2013, the series had the highest rated fall premiere for a Fox drama in six years at the time, pulling in an impressive 10+ million viewers. Loosely based on Washington Irving’s iconic “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” the series brought Ichabod Crane into the present day, which proved to be a winning concept for the network.

Four seasons of “Sleepy Hollow” aired between September 2013 and this past March, but we’ve just learned that the steadily declining ratings have forced Fox to drop the axe and pull the plug. It’s being reported tonight that “Sleepy Hollow” has officially been cancelled after four seasons – it wasn’t a very good sign when the fourth season was downgraded from 18 to 13 episodes.

Per Variety, “the fantasy-cop drama saw its ratings plummet in season four, averaging a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demo and 1.9 million total viewers — down 40% in the demo and and 37% in viewers from season three.”

“The Exorcist” better not be next, Fox.

Will 2017 be an excellent year for another exorcism?

We spread our love for Fox’s “The Exorcist” across several articles last year and the reason for that was simple: we wanted to make sure you were watching. The incredible debut season of the series, which surprisingly tied into the film franchise in satisfying fashion, was well-reviewed by pretty much everyone who watched. The problem? Well, not enough people watched.

Due to low ratings, the future of “The Exorcist” is very uncertain at this time, and last we heard, Fox won’t be making their final decision until May. At this point, it seems there’s a real good chance the show will not return to the network, but creator Jeremy Slater still remains hopeful.

On Twitter last night, a fan of the show expressed her sadness about “The Exorcist” not being renewed by Fox, and Slater quickly clarified that this was false information. Said Slater:

We haven’t been canceled. I’ve been meeting with the studio & network, pitching my ideas for S2. I’m still optimistic about our chances.

If “The Exorcist” does end up getting renewed, we will be meeting a whole new family in Season 2. Slater gave us the exclusive first details on the planned season back in December:

A potential season two would find Marcus, Tomas and Bennett tasked with helping a new family or a new case of possession. That doesn’t mean we’ll never see any of the Rances again, but I think the fans would feel disappointed and cheated if we simply brought Captain Howdy back for round three. The Rances have escaped this legacy of terror–for the time being, anyway–and it seems cruel to immediately drag them back for ten more episodes of suffering. Our challenge now is to create a new family that you care about just as much as the Rances, and to find ways to make their story feel just as compelling and unique as what came before.

For now, we can only wait for Fox to make a decision.

Aside from a messy, info dump-heavy first episode, I personally found last year’s limited revival of “The X-Files” to be incredibly satisfying. It was great to see Mulder and Scully back after so many years, the episodes (particularly “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster”) were enjoyable, and the ambitious finale left me hungry for more. But when are we getting more, if ever?

Soon, friends. Soon.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Fox president David Madden just told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s press tour that the network is expecting “to have an announcement very shortly” in regards to the renewal of “The X-Files.” The only holdup, he says, is that deal-making has been made a little bit complex due to the busy schedules of both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny… who better be paid equally when the show does return!

Madden also revealed that future seasons of the series will likely be longer than six-episodes, but not quite as long as the show’s original 20+ episode-per-season format.

Expect the return of “The X-Files,” if all goes according to plan, in 2018.

Will FOX #RenewTheExorcist?

The debut season of “The Exorcist” came to a close this past Friday night, wrapping up the main storyline in satisfying fashion and hinting at what lies ahead for characters like Marcus, Tomas, and the Rance family. After decades of torment, Regan MacNeil/Angela Rance finally killed the demon Pazuzu with the help of Tomas, allowing the Rance family to (hopefully) live out the rest of their days in peace. Also in the finale, a heroic Father Marcus thwarted the attempt to assassinate Pope Sebastian, agreeing in the end to partner up with Tomas to continue the battle against evil.

Where does the show go from here? We asked “The Exorcist” creator Jeremy Slater that very question in the wake of the finale, and he provided us with the exclusive first details about Season 2. Of course, it’s entirely possible that FOX won’t even renew the series for a second season, but like the rest of us, Slater is hopeful that they will… and he’s already begun the planning process.

If “The Exorcist” gets renewed, we will be meeting a whole new family. Slater explains:

A potential season two would find Marcus, Tomas and Bennett tasked with helping a new family or a new case of possession. That doesn’t mean we’ll never see any of the Rances again, but I think the fans would feel disappointed and cheated if we simply brought Captain Howdy back for round three. The Rances have escaped this legacy of terror–for the time being, anyway–and it seems cruel to immediately drag them back for ten more episodes of suffering. Our challenge now is to create a new family that you care about just as much as the Rances, and to find ways to make their story feel just as compelling and unique as what came before.

What about all the corruption in the church? Slater says we’ll be seeing more of that:

We would always continue to expand our mythology moving forward. We know that Maria Walters and Superintendent Jaffey and Cardinal Guillot are still out there somewhere, but I think the conspiracy probably runs much deeper than that. When we left our heroes at the end of the first season, they were part of only a handful of people on the planet that know this conspiracy is taking place, that evil is infiltrating every level of church and state. Going forward, I think that sense of paranoia and never quite knowing who to trust will become a much bigger component in the show. We’ve established a fun little dynamic where Tomas and Bennett are essentially now acting as moles within the Catholic church, trying to uncover just how deep this corruption has spread, while Marcus is the wild card operating outside the boundaries of the church. The goal would be to balance these personal, character-based stories with the larger mythology elements we’ve introduced, to create a world where no one and nothing is ever truly safe.

So come on, FOX. Give us what we want. #RenewTheExorcist!

Forty years of storytelling. In chronological order.

While it initially seemed to be an in-name-only television series, FOX’s “The Exorcist” has turned out to be anything but. As we learned in the fifth episode of the debut season, the story is actually a direct continuation of the original film, which has been pretty awesome for us longtime fans of the franchise. We don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn’t been keeping up with the series, so we urge you to avoid the last couple paragraphs of this post if you haven’t.

Oh and WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!

At the time of writing this post, the first season of “The Exorcist” is coming to an end in just a couple days, so now seemed like as good of a time as any to do something I’ve been wanting to do since the show blew my mind with that big episode 5 reveal. The story that began in 1973 has continued in the form of two sequels, two prequels, and now a TV series, and I thought it’d be interesting to track the whole damn storyline in the form of a handy little timeline. After all, at its core, the whole franchise is about one main character: the demon known as Pazuzu.

We begin a long, long time ago…

exorcist-church

CIRCA 500 A.D.

The saga of The Exorcist begins around 500 A.D., as documented in dueling prequels The Exorcist: The Beginning and Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist. A large army, led by two priests, traveled to Kenya looking for the origin of evil, and there they met the demon known as Pazuzu. The evil force consumed them, and they all ended up killing each other. To mask what had happened and entomb the demon, a Christian Byzantine church was built over the site and then completely buried.

Buried, that is, until 1949.

the-exorcist-merrin

1949

His faith shattered by an incident involving Nazi soldiers, Father Lankester Merrin has taken a sabbatical from the church and is participating in an archaeology dig in, you guessed it, Kenya. This is where he comes face to face with Pazuzu for the first time, in the year 1949.

The excavation of the church is being done to recover the ancient Pazuzu idol, and of course, digging it up results in the demon being freed. In Dominion, the demon possesses a young boy named Cheche, but in The Beginning, it’s the dig’s female doctor who becomes possessed. In both films, Pazuzu is driven out by an exorcism conducted by Merrin, and they both end with Merrin’s faith restored.

But the demon isn’t done with Merrin just yet.

exorcist-masturbation

1973

William Friedkin’s The Exorcist was released in, and presumably takes place in 1973. At the beginning of the film, Father Merrin is on an archaeological dig in Iraq when he comes across a statue of Pazuzu, who he of course did battle with many years prior.

Meanwhile, over in Washington, D.C., a young Regan MacNeil plays with a Ouija board and unknowingly summons forth Pazuzu – Regan refers to the demon, which appears to her as a salesman with a red bird on his shoulder, as Captain Howdy. Her mother Chris MacNeil calls in Father Merrin and Father Damien Karras to exorcise the demon from Regan’s body, and in doing so, Merrin is killed and Karras becomes the new host for Pazuzu. Sacrificing himself to kill the demon, Karras jumps out the window, and presumably dies.

Well sort of. More on that in a minute.

exorcist-2

1977

The sequel The Exorcist II: The Heretic is set four years after the events of the original film, so we can deduce that it takes place in 1977. Regan, now 16 years old, confronts the horrifying events of her childhood at a psychiatric institute, and we learn that she was targeted by Pazuzu due to her ability to telepathically reach inside the minds of others.

Okay then.

Back at the Georgetown house, Regan battles the demon once more, though this time he is not inside of her. The film ends with Regan herself banishing her old friend Captain Howdy.

But perhaps it’s best we don’t even acknowledge the events of The Heretic.

exorcist-3-karras

1990

We jump forward to 1990 in The Exorcist III, which primarily centers on Lieutenant William F. Kinderman (a character from the original film). The lieutenant is investigating a series of gruesome murders in Georgetown, and he comes to the conclusion that they’re the work of James “The Gemini” Venamun – a serial killer who was executed seventeen years prior. After the killer was executed, his soul entered the body of Damien Karras, who is still alive and being held at a psychiatric ward, and he’s also able to inhabit other bodies and force them to do his bidding. The soul-hopping, we learn, is the work of the Gemini’s spiritual master: a vengeful Pazuzu, who is still furious about being driven out of young Regan’s body.

Kinderman is eventually forced to kill Karras and end the nightmare.

geena-davis-exorcist

2016

Now forty-three years after the events of The Exorcist, Regan MacNeil is living in Chicago under the name Angela Rance. She has two daughters, Casey Rance and Katherine Rance, and when Casey becomes possessed by Pazuzu, Angela is forced to reveal her biggest secret to her family: she is Regan MacNeil, the little girl who was possessed by Pazuzu in the 1970s.

What Pazuzu really wants is to be back inside Regan, and in a moment of desperation, Regan gives the demon what he desires so that he will leave Casey’s body. Shortly after being taken over by Captain Howdy, Regan kills her own mother, Chris MacNeil, revealing that she is no longer Regan MacNeil or Angela Rance.

Regan and Pazuzu have now become one, four decades after their initial encounter.

What comes next? We’ll just have to wait and see.

“Let’s give ’em a good show.”

The penultimate episode of the first season of “The Exorcist” airs this Friday night on FOX, and if you’ve been watching, you know that things are getting pretty damn crazy. In Episode 8, Regan MacNeil/Angela Rance (Geena Davis) gave Captain Howdy what he has always wanted most: her body. Angela invited Captain Howdy in for the sake of her daughter Casey being freed from the prison that is demonic possession, and at the tail end of the episode, a fully possessed Angela killed her own mother by twisting her head 180-degrees and pushing her down the stairs.

What’s next? Now that Regan/Angela has once more become a vessel for Captain Howdy, the demon gets to resume the horror that began way back in 1973. In this exclusive clip from this Friday night’s brand new episode, we revisit a scene from Episode 8 through the eyes of Angela, taking us back to the moment when she finally agreed to let Captain Howdy take over her body.

I’ve had the pleasure of previewing the new episode and let me just say that watching Geena Davis playing evil is a real treat. This show, against all odds, keeps getting better and better.

Check out the exclusive clip below!

In Chapter 9:

On the eve of Pope Sebastian’s visit to Chicago, Marcus and his companions race to avert a potential tragedy. Tomas is offered a life-changing opportunity, but will the sins of the past endanger his future within the church? Meanwhile, as the Rance family attempts to recover from their most recent ordeal, a new problem threatens to tear them apart.

The iconic scream queen directed the latest episode of “Scream Queens.“

There are so many horror shows on TV right now that no matter how many of them I devote myself to watching, there’s just no possible way for me to watch them all. I’m currently keeping up with “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” “The Walking Dead,” and “The Exorcist,” but other shows have fallen by the wayside for no reason other than a lack of time in the day. One of those shows is FOX’s “Scream Queens,” which I haven’t watched a single episode of this season. Need. More. Time.

Now that I’ve revealed that I have no idea what’s going on in “Scream Queens” this season, I wanted to tip you off to a couple fun homages you might have missed in last night’s episode. How do I know about these homages? Because Jamie Lee Curtis, who both starred in and directed the episode “Rapunzel, Rapunzel,” just tweeted that she intentionally paid tribute to the movie that made her a household name and THE be-all, end-all scream queen: Halloween, of course!

Straight from @JamieLeeCurtis‘ fingers:

In the episode:

A man from Dean Munsch’s past checked in to the C.U.R.E. institute with plans to win her back, causing a jealous Brock to further question his relationship with Chanel. Meanwhile, Zayday and Chamberlain devised a plan to discover the origins of The Green Meanie killer… with shocking results.

He is coming.

We’re now one week away from the return of FOX’s “The Exorcist,” which has just two episodes left in its consistently impressive debut season. The first episode in a two-part season finale will premiere on Friday night, December 9th, and we’re about to arrive at the big moment the season has been building to. Pope Sebastian is coming to Chicago, and very strange things are afoot.

Featured in both Episode 9 and Episode 10 are huge banners announcing the arrival of the Pope for a street parade that the finale will center on, and series creator Jeremy Slater was kind enough to provide us with FOUR of those banners to give away to you awesome BD readers. Yes, these huge vinyl banners are SCREEN-USED, and will be featured very prominently in the finale.

Along with the props, Slater has also donated four of the show’s Comic-Con posters, which will be bundled with the banners to form four giveaway packages for four “The Exorcist” fans!

Here’s Slater showing off one of the banners:

The end of the most recent episode was home to a literal twist that has forever changed not just the show but the entire franchise, so we can expect that we’re in store for some shocking craziness in the inaugural season’s final two hours.

If you’re a fan of “The Exorcist” and you live in or near Los Angeles, we’re excited to announce that there is going to be a special advanced screening of Episode 9 on Friday, December 9th, before the episode airs, and we want YOU to attend the event. The screening will be taking place on the FOX lot, and we’ve been provided with 10 sets of double passes (you and a guest).

In addition to the world premiere screening of Episode 9, this special event will also feature a Q&A session, and series creator Jeremy Slater will be in attendance. Joining Slater will be star Brianne Howey, and from what we’ve been told, there’s a good chance both Hannah Kasulka and Geena Davis, yes Geena freakin’ Davis, will also be there. Yeah. You don’t want to miss this.

The screening is at 6:30pm, followed by the Q&A.

To enter, simply fill out the form below. If you win, you will be contacted by FOX.

Giveaway closes at the end of the day on Friday, December 2nd. Good luck!

Nostalgia can be a real killer.

The sad passing of legendary actress Florence Henderson has surely compelled many fans of her work to spend today revisiting episodes of “The Brady Bunch.” Henderson of course played the always cheerful Carol Brady in the series, then and forever dubbed “America’s mom” due to the fact that, well, pretty much everyone wanted Carol Brady to be their mom. The moniker was a testament to Henderson’s likability and talents as an actress, to say the very least.

Thinking back on “The Brady Bunch” today, I was reminded of one of my absolute favorite episodes of “The X-Files” – though Florence Henderson did not appear in it, the episode was a love letter to the show that made her a household name. That episode, titled “Sunshine Days,” was the penultimate one in the final season of the original “X-Files” series – the show of course returned for a limited revival earlier this year – and it seemed only fitting to revisit today.

“Sunshine Days” kicks off with two young friends sneaking into a house that they believe to be the fictional Brady house – Blake insists it’s where the television series was filmed, but Mike (“Married With Children” star David Faustino) isn’t convinced. The two friends enter the house and not only is it laid out exactly like the Brady home, but the Brady family seems to be living in it. In a creepy moment inspired by The Shining, Blake encounters Bobby and Cindy in the upstairs hallway, and it’s not long before he’s hurled through the roof by a supernatural force.

xfiles-brady-bunch

In the wake of Blake’s bizarre murder, FBI agents Doggett, Reyes, and Scully are called onto the scene, and they find that the alleged Brady house doesn’t actually look like the Brady house at all. It’s a normal home that bears no resemblance to the one from the show, despite Mike’s insistence that he’s sure of what he saw. In the episode’s most chilling sequence, Mike returns to the house on his own and finds that he didn’t hallucinate the previous night’s events: peering through the windows, Mike sees the entire Brady family eating dinner in the kitchen.

So what’s the explanation? The house is owned by a man (played by Michael Emerson, who you may remember as Zep from the first Saw movie!) who has psychokinetic abilities. Though he goes by the name Oliver Martin, a reference to Cousin Oliver from the final season of “The Brady Bunch,” his real name is Anthony Fogelman, and he uses his incredible abilities to quite literally turn his home into the Brady home and manifest the characters from the show: as it’s explained in the episode, he employs an “electromagnetic field strong enough to fog the image.”

As it turns out, he’s just a lonely dude with no family who loves “The Brady Bunch.”

“Why the Brady Bunch?” Why are people still watching a 30-year-old TV show?” asks Doggett. “Because they’re the family everyone wishes they had,” replies Reyes. “Loving parents, lots of brothers and sisters. Everybody getting along.”

The episode’s brilliant concept paves way for a sentimental finale wherein it’s revealed that Fogelman/Martin is dying because of how frequently he’s been using his powers. We also find out that when he’s genuinely happy in his own life, when he feels loved and part of a family, he doesn’t need to conjure up the Brady family to fill the void he feels inside. “Sunshine Days” can be seen as a commentary on our obsession with television and/or the destructive power of nostalgia, but the ultimate message is that the most necessary things in life are to love and be loved.

Things that the ole boob tube just cannot truly provide us with.

“Here’s hoping the TV stays off and he learns how to love the real world,” an emotional Dogget says at the very end of the episode, grabbing hold of Reyes’ hand.

You can revisit “Sunshine Days” and the entirety of “The X-Files” on Netflix.

Remember “Hannibal”? The one that got away. Let’s not let it happen again.

From what I’ve seen across social media, pretty much everyone who has actually given “The Exorcist” a chance has realized that it’s one of the very best horror shows on TV right now. Admittedly, like everyone else, we had written it off before it ever even aired, but it became immediately clear to us that the show was interested in something more than capitalizing on the brand and making a quick buck. The Jeremy Slater-created series is smart, fresh, and thoroughly compelling each and every week, and it’s been nothing short of a treat for fans of the original film.

Unfortunately, the reality here is that as good as “The Exorcist” is, the ratings aren’t so good. And when a TV show’s ratings aren’t very good, you don’t need us to tell you what happens. With dwindling numbers each week, there’s a likelihood that FOX may pull the plug rather than order a second season… but we encourage you to at least try and make sure that doesn’t happen.

This past Friday night, the seventh episode of “The Exorcist” pulled in just 1.6 million viewers, down from the previous week’s 1.8 million. The steady decline in ratings has been happening on a week-to-week basis, and when you consider that 2.8 million viewers tuned in for the premiere, you can see just how much of a dip those numbers have taken over the course of the past two months. To put all of this into some form of context: at the time NBC cancelled “Hannibal,” another fantastic horror series that pushed boundaries, about 1 million viewers were watching.

So how can you help? Slater has been encouraging fans of the show to post about it on social media as much as possible, and with Episode 8 airing tonight, the fan-driven #RenewTheExorcist is on the verge of trending on Twitter. This is one of those situations where we the fans have the power to keep something we love alive, so don’t underestimate the importance of your tweets.

Check out the handy guide below for more ways you can lend a hand!

“The Exorcist” airs Friday nights at 9/8 on FOX.

Back in September my pre-air review of the pilot episode of Fox’s The Exorcist was published and it was not exactly a glowing review. It wasn’t exactly a terrible review either, but it was a mediocre one. I concluded my review by stating that The Exorcist is “not must-see-TV, but it’s worth checking out.” Apparently many of you did not think it was worth checking out at all, as the series has decreased in viewers every week. The last episode garnered a mere 1.61 million total viewers with a 0.6 in the crucial 18-49 demographic. That’s not atrocious for a Friday night, but it’s certainly not good. The Exorcist is in danger of cancellation and I feel partly responsible, so I am here to apologize for dissuading some of you from giving the show a chance. The Exorcist has a rocky start but has steadily improved with each and every episode since its premiere.  It has become a great series that every horror fan should be watching.

First of all, I would like to stand by my review of the pilot. I think it is just average. Nothing more, nothing less. There were strengths evident in the episode (the performances, the sound design, those final five minutes) but plenty of weaknesses as well (the over-reliance on jump scares, the lack of innovation with the material). The “been there, seen that” aspects of the possession are still a flaw in the series, but the time spent with these characters over the course of the past seven episodes has made the proceedings far more compelling than they initially were. The series follows all the standard possession movie tropes, but it feels classier than something like, say, The Exorcist II: The Heretic.

In one of my harsher critiques of the pilot I stated:

“Angela approaches Tomas about her suspicions about 20 minutes into the episode. At this point the viewer has hardly seen anything that would lead a rational person to suspect demonic possession, so it seems downright silly that this woman would jump to this conclusion so hastily.”

***SPOILERS IN THE NEXT PARAGRAPH***

Silly me. Anyone who has kept up with the series now knows that Angela Rance (Geena Davis) is none other than Regan MacNeil, the main character in William Friedkin’s 1973 masterpiece. I was quick to judge the character’s motivation, but that is something that comes with the territory of reviewing single episodes (especially pilot episodes) of a television series. Angela’s true identity wasn’t revealed until Episode 5. Based on the pilot episode alone my criticism is valid, but taking all of the episodes so far it makes perfect sense.

***END SPOILERS***

As I mentioned above, I stand by my review. The pilot is a mediocre piece of television when taken on its own. Later episodes put the pilot into a new light and that sort of makes my review null and void. If I had a chance to review the first seven episodes of the series as a whole it would be a solid 4/5. I’m not apologizing for my review. I’m apologizing for discouraging some of you from giving this great show a chance. It’s a show that is better than it has any right to be, especially when you consider the film it had to live up to. I should have known better. A network wouldn’t agree to a television adaptation of one of the greatest movies of all time unless it was great. If anything, NBC’s Hannibal taught us that.

Lest you think I have such a high opinion of myself that I believe I singlehandedly cause low ratings for the show, never fear. I’m not so high and mighty that I think millions of people read my review and tuned out, but I’m sure at least one person did, and for that I am sorry. So forgive me, dear reader, from convincing you to not watch the show. It’s worth it. I promise. The Exorcist has now become must-see TV for me and it should be for you too. Catch up on Hulu and watch the newest episode tonight.* You won’t regret it!

The Exorcist airs on Fridays on Fox at 9/8 CT.

*No, this article was not paid for by Fox. I just hate seeing good horror TV get canceled.

It’s an excellent day… to look at some cool art.

We’ve been talking about “The Exorcist” quite a bit here on Bloody Disgusting, and the reason for that is not just cause we’re big fans but also because we worry that not enough horror fans are watching the show. We’re trying to do everything we can to make sure it gets renewed for a second season, because if it doesn’t, well, that would be another “Hannibal”-like tragedy.

There have thus far been six episodes of FOX’s incredible sequel series, with the seventh set to premiere tonight, November 11th. Over on the official “The Exorcist” Facebook page, gorgeous pieces of art paying tribute to each of the episodes have been posted on a weekly basis, and now that we’ve got a nice collection of six of them to show off, we wanted to do just that.

As far as we can tell – oddly enough, only one of the images is credited to an artist – all six pieces of art are the work of Polish artist Jarek Kubicki, and they depict memorable moments from each of the respective episodes we’ve seen so far. In one of the paintings, Casey vomits out a massive centipede, and another depicts the hospital scene that resulted in her full-on possession.

Check out all of the awesome episode-specific art below!

I can’t believe I’m writing this, but we’ve reached a point where there’s almost too much great horror TV to choose from. Between “Ash vs Evil Dead”, “Scream” and “The Walking Dead”, horror fans have it pretty good. There’s one show that’s being looked over, though and at this point I’m confident in saying that it’s one of the best of them all – “The Exorcist.”

The show’s painfully formulaic first episode coupled with the fact that it airs on Fridays isn’t doing it any favors, but I’ve taken the time every week to watch it with my parents’ cable login online, and each episode has improved on the last markedly. There’s great twists, awesomely disturbing moments featuring insects (and of course vomit) and a genuine care for the original film that most modern re-imaginings wouldn’t take a second to think about.

I could go on all day here, but I already made a video with five of the biggest reasons you need to binge FOX’s “The Exorcist” as soon as possible. You can watch it below.
