Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson will play a witch named Cassandra in Tubi horror sequel R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead 2, and you can check out the first images of Peterson in the film below.

“Wise and deeply connected to ancient magic, she understands the dark forces threatening Redhaven and the sacrifice it may take to stop them,” the official character description previews.

“R.L. Stine and I have been in the business of scaring kids for a long time, so joining Pumpkinhead 2 was such a treat,” Peterson says. “Playing Cassandra was the perfect ‘witchy’ role for me.”

Look for R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead 2 on Tubi beginning October 9, 2026.

Based on the story by R.L. Stine, this continuation to the wildly popular movie begins when a new Pumpkinhead curse awakens in Redhaven, and Sam and Becka must stop it before it claims the entire town. Jem Garrard will be returning to write and direct the sequel.

A feature adaptation of the same-titled episode from the television series “R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour,” R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead premiered October 17, 2025 only on Tubi.

In the first film, teenager Sam’s family move to Redhaven is made worse when his brother Finn disappears — and no one else remembers that he existed. Sam joins friend Becka and eccentric Rusty in the race to find Finn and break a harvest curse before Halloween ends.

Joe Lipsett wrote in his review for Bloody Disgusting, “R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead is a solid gateway film for pre-teens. It’s clearly aimed at a younger audience for whom a daytime chase by a Scarecrow through an empty field is equal parts scary and exciting. With that said, everyone is apt to be affected by the horrifying spectacle of the screaming titular character, which looks amazing. Add to this two delightful animated sequences and a finale that employs a spell, a ticking clock, and a surprisingly dark coda, and it all feels appropriately R.L. Stine.”

The ten-episode anthology series will introduce a new generation of filmmakers and is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Tubi this Fall in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

From executive producer Peter Rice and GJMD Studio, the series brings a fresh take on the short-form horror format to Tubi that was previously explored in Hulu’s “Bite Size Halloween.”

Each episode will feature a new story, ranging from occult to body horror, dark comedy, monsters, and the macabre.

“Our horror shorts have become an extraordinary engine for discovering new writer-directors, 90 shorts, nine first features, and counting,” said Executive Producer Peter Rice. “We’re thrilled to partner with Tubi to introduce the next generation of horror filmmakers, with BITE SIZE TERROR on Tubi.”

• THE DEEP END: A babysitter reluctantly times a child’s underwater trick in the deep end of a backyard pool, only to realize something is wrong when he resurfaces silent, unblinking, and not quite himself. The film stars Jessi Mechler (“Boyhood”) and Beau Foxx (The Pitt), and is written and directed by J. Zachary Thurman (“The Demon Core”).
• MARISOL: At her older sister’s funeral, a grieving teenage girl defies a taboo passed down through her family in hopes of reaching the dead, only to discover that the voice calling back may not belong to her sister at all. The film stars Jessie Mae Alonzo (Everything Now), Lourdes Faberes (Avatar: The Last Airbender), and Kim Adis (Get Even), and is written by Jed Shepherd (“Host”) and directed by Jill Sachs (“Taga”).
• KACHINA: A rental makeover influencer and home décor stylist hired to transform a desert home into a post-worthy stay disrespects the owner’s sacred family doll-turning her picture-perfect redesign into a blood-soaked reckoning. The film stars Chloe Ray (Fuller House), the puppeteer talents of Benjamin Michael Bayouth (Diabolical), and Dillon Wolf Oleata (Blark and Son), and is written and directed by Boise Esquerra (“The Black Demon”).
• RESONANCE: While clearing out her late father’s house during a storm, a grieving woman discovers his final experiment: a signal spreading through water that turns the exposed into vessels for something inhuman. The film stars Glenda MacInnis (Boston Blue), Andy McQueen (Paradise), the voice talents of Charles Halford (Outer Banks), and is written and directed by Mark Lammerding (“The Night Within”).
• MOTHER MARROW: When a young couple discovers an old matchmaking card game inside their rental RV, every question forces a darker confession, until they realize the game is testing whether their love deserves to survive. The film stars Haley Gauthier (“Behind Door Two”), Eric Palmer (“Harvester”), and Marquel Skinner (Young Rock), and is written by Jake and Conor Lawler (The Lawler Brothers) (“One of Them Days”) and is directed by Charlie Schwan (“Harvester”).
• SUCKER: After a broke motel clerk is bitten by a bat, her petty scams turn bloodier when a guest with a valuable antique reveals a bigger world of valuables, victims, and opportunity. • COME HOME: A lonely boy searches the city for offerings to feed the creature hidden in his apartment, desperate for the fleeting moments after each sacrifice when the monster gives him back something that feels like home. The film stars Felix Paz, Minos Nevradakis, and Malina Manovici (“Graduation”), and is co-written by Mateo Braun Costa, Eduardo Braun Costa, and directed by Eduardo Braun Costa (“The Liars”).
• FLORAL REMAINS: After returning to her late mother’s macabre flower shop, where the dead are preserved in bloom, a grieving daughter demands one final message from the dead and discovers some goodbyes are better left buried. The film stars Courtney Taylor (Abbott Elementary), Jamela Asha (I Love LA), and Susan Louise O’Connor (The Cleaning Lady), and is written and directed by Jasmine J. Johnson (“Inner Demons”).

The upcoming Tubi Original Buzzkill is written by Suzanne Keilly (Slumber Party Massacre) and directed by Jem Garrard (R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead).

In the film, “When a group of sorority sisters finds themselves trapped with a vengeful killer, party-girl Nora knows that the drunker she gets, the more her tipsy memories start revealing clues about who’s murdering her friends. But she’d better hurry, or her next vodka soda might be her last.”

Siena Agudong (Carrie), Brec Bassinger (Final Destination Bloodlines), and Aliyah’s Interlude (English Teacher) lead the cast of Jem Garrard’s Buzzkill.

Garrard said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, “I loved Suzanne’s script and was excited by her spin on the slasher genre. Nora isn’t your traditional final girl. She screws up constantly and is spectacularly ill-equipped for what’s happening around her, but we never stop rooting for her.

“Siena [Agudong] has incredible comic instincts and brings so much heart to Nora. I couldn’t have asked for a better ensemble. Everyone brought such a distinct energy to their character, and I’m excited for audiences to meet this lovable, dysfunctional sorority.”

New to Tubi September Horror Films

1408 (2007)

• Premise: Author Michael Enslin (John Cusack), who specializes in debunking paranormal occurrences, checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel in New York City, settles in, and soon confronts genuine terror.
• Why Watch It? We’ve rarely had a period without a slate of Stephen King adaptations, though there are certainly fallow periods (and bad titles). 2007 was a mixed bag: sure, this is the year The Mist came out, but it was a financial failure at the time. Both The Mist and this were also coming out in the wake of films like Secret Window (mixed reception) and Dreamcatcher (an abysmal failure). 1408 won’t go down as the best King adaptation, but director Mikael Håfström gets the job done visually and Cusack, even when he’s being a bit of a dick, provides a warm likability that anchors the production. This one’s solid.
• Streaming: Sept 24

3 From Hell (2019)

• Premise: After barely surviving prison, the demented Firefly clan goes on the run, unleashing a whole new wave of murder, madness, and mayhem.
• Why Watch It? Although 3 From Hell isn’t the magnum opus of the Firefly trilogy (that would be The Devil’s Rejects for my money), for fans of Rob Zombie‘s brand of redneck grindhouse/exploitation / horror, this trilogy caper has its appeal. Tragically, Sid Haig was quite ill, so Captain Spaulding’s more expansive role was cut back in favor of Richard Brake‘s Foxy (he fits in well in this world, but it’s hard not to want more of Haig and Spaulding). Still, if you wanna see the epic conclusion to the tale, as well as plenty of genre faves – including Dee Wallace, Danny Trejo, Clint Howard, and Barry Bostwick (as the narrator) – why not make the trip to Mexico?
• Streaming: Sept 1

Beau Is Afraid (2023)

• Premise: Following the sudden death of his mother, a mild-mannered but anxiety-ridden man (Joaquin Phoenix) confronts his darkest fears as he embarks on an epic odyssey back home.
• Why Watch It? Fancy a panic attack? While Ari Aster’s 2023 film wasn’t received any where as warmly as his more popular films (Hereditary, Midsommar), this nearly three hour opus is one slow anxiety-inducing nightmare. Similar in tone to the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems, this is a secret horror movie that continually tightens the noose the further Beau’s journey takes him.
• Streaming: Sept 1

The Descent (2005) 

• Premise: A caving expedition goes horribly wrong when six explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.
• Why Watch It? Neil Marshall‘s spelunking film is, to this day, one of the most terrifying contemporary horror films. Expertly crafted using a specific lighting strategy to denote characters, featuring dancers as creatures, and boasting a compelling human drama, nothing Marshall has done since has come close to recapturing this film’s power. It’s feminist AF; it’s a gory creature feature; before that, it’s a really claustrophobic climbing film. It’s a perfect film!
  • The inferior sequel is also a movie that exists that you can watch this month.
• Streaming: Sept 1

Dracula 2000 (2000)

• Premise: Dracula (Gerard Butler) slakes his blood thirst and renews his search for love in New Orleans.
• Why Watch It? If you’ve never seen this movie, then you are in for a cheesy good time. This is a BAD movie, but it is also an enjoyable one. Bless Butler, who is playing this incredibly straight while his brides, including Jennifer Esposito and “Graduation (Friends Forever)” Vitamin C (!) hilariously vamp it up. Patrick Lussier was desperate to get out from under Wes Craven’s shadow and prove his chops as a theatrical feature writer/directo and while this may appear to be a terrible calling card, Lussier would go on to helm not just the 2003 sequel, but also the 2005 threequel!
• Streaming: Sept 1

Ghostbusters II (1989)

• Premise: The discovery of a massive river of ectoplasm and a resurgence of spectral activity allows the staff of Ghostbusters to revive the business.
• Why Watch It? Look, no one is going to pretend the 1989 sequel is superior to Ivan Reitman‘s 1984 classic. But it is sorta fun to see the band get back together for a new adventure. Peter MacNicol gets plenty to do as human antagonist Janosz Poha (incredible name), the haunted painting has always been creepy, and the river of slime is a pretty evocative image. If anything, the sequel suffers from depreciating returns because it is too much of a carbon copy, but time has softened some of those criticisms. Ghostbusters II is inoffensive and overdue for a rewatch, especially if you’ve watched the OG a billion times already.
• Streaming: Sept 1

My Bloody Valentine (2009)

• Premise: Tom (Jensen Ackles) returns to his hometown on the tenth anniversary of the Valentine’s night massacre that claimed the lives of 22 people. Instead of a homecoming, Tom finds himself suspected of committing the murders, and it seems like his old flame (Jaime King) is the only one who believes he’s innocent.
• Why Watch It? This is a MUCH better time than Lussier’s other title on this list (the aforementioned Dracula 2000). Because it’s a late aughts horror film, it is (naturally) also a remake of an 80s slasher. The trick to enjoying this film is to ignore the logistical impossibilities of its ill-advised “twist” in favor of appreciating sequences like the grocery store set piece. Simply settle back and revel in a time when every star on the CW got their kick at a slasher remake. (Also: Tom Atkins!)
• Streaming: Sept 1

Presence (2024)

• Premise: A family becomes convinced they are not alone after moving into their new home in the suburbs.
• Why Watch It? In addition to featuring Lucy Liu as the mother, this high concept Steven Soderbergh film was hailed for its novel premise. It’s definitely a slow burn, but worth checking out if only to marvel at how Soderbergh, working as his own cinematographer under the name “Peter Andrews”, shoots the film from the ghost’s perspective. Just be warned: the script from David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Panic Room, etc) thinks it’s a bit more clever than it actually is.
• Streaming: Sept 7

The Ruins (2008)

• Premise: A leisurely Mexican holiday takes a turn for the worse when a group of friends and a fellow tourist embark on a remote archaeological dig in the jungle, where something evil lives among the ruins.
• Why Watch It? Writer Scott B Smith’s adaptation of his own bestseller was always going to be a tough sell (vines that kill?), but in queer director Carter Smith‘s capable hands, the body horror carnage inflicted on the film’s American College students is pure nightmare fuel. Come for underrated scream queen (and frequent Smith collaborator) Jena Malone and stay for the horrible shit that happens to Laura Ramsey’s Stacy.
• Streaming: Sept 1

Sorority Row (2009)

• Premise: A killer threatens to expose the fatal secret binding a group of sorority sisters.
• Why Watch It? The recent announcement of a brand new 4K release has reignited interest in this title, which is another remake of an 80s slasher (sound familiar?) The difference is that Sorority Row has a campy mean streak to it, unlike many other films of this era. Not only are some of the kills verging on cruel (RIP Carrie Fisher’s house mom Mrs. Crenshaw), but the film has a secret MVP in Leah Pipe’s abhorrent (ie: delightfully bitchy) sorority girl Jessica. Yes, the Greek sisters are lacking in camaraderie, but you’ll hardly notice when you’re having a blast.
• Streaming: Sept 1

September Tubi Originals

The Deliver Girl (2026)

• Premise: An insurance adjuster’s mundane life spirals into a nightmare when a food delivery worker develops a deadly obsession with him.

In other words, the streamer is shifting its favorite seasonal celebration into a permanent home for horror.

A feature adaptation of the same-titled episode from the television series “R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour,” R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead premiered October 17, 2025 only on Tubi.

In the first film, teenager Sam’s family move to Redhaven is made worse when his brother Finn disappears — and no one else remembers that he existed. Sam joins friend Becka and eccentric Rusty in the race to find Finn and break a harvest curse before Halloween ends.

Joe Lipsett wrote in his review for Bloody Disgusting, “R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead is a solid gateway film for pre-teens. It’s clearly aimed at a younger audience for whom a daytime chase by a Scarecrow through an empty field is equal parts scary and exciting. With that said, everyone is apt to be affected by the horrifying spectacle of the screaming titular character, which looks amazing. Add to this two delightful animated sequences and a finale that employs a spell, a ticking clock, and a surprisingly dark coda, and it all feels appropriately R.L. Stine.”

While the first two seasons featured a brand new killer mask, the classic Ghostface mask made a return in Scream: Resurrection, which told a new story with new characters.

Scream: Resurrection centers on a local star football running back whose tragic past comes back to haunt him and threaten his hard-earned plans and the lives of his friends.

Is it worth watching? And was this a successful attempt at bringing the slasher subgenre to the small screen? Paul Le explained here on Bloody Disgusting earlier this year, “Yes and no.”

Paul continued, “There are stumbles along the way that the show can’t always recover from; the uneven pacing and excess of teen drama both come to mind. On the other end, when it’s focused on gruesome thrills and plot twists, the series is pretty damn entertaining.”

New to Tubi August Horror Films

Bambi: The Reckoning (2025), Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare (2025), and Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey 2 (2024)

• Premise: Piglet, Owl, and Tigger take their fight to Ashdown. A mutated, vengeful deer stalks a mother & son following a car accident. Meanwhile, Wendy Darling strikes out in an attempt to rescue her brother Michael from the clutches of the evil Peter Pan.
• Why Watch Them? Look, you can refuse to submit to the Twisted Childhood Universe (aka Poohniverse), but the reality is that Jagged Edge Productions are building up to a literal film called Monsters Assemble in the next year or so. Plus: some of these films are the very definition of dumb fun. Stop resisting and give in to the madness – it’s free!
• Streaming: All August 10

The Blackening (2022)

• Premise: Seven friends go away for the weekend and end up trapped in a cabin with a killer who has a vendetta. Will their street smarts and knowledge of horror movies help them stay alive? Probably not.
• Why Watch It? In a just world, The Blackening would have done the same kind of business as Scream or even Scary Movie. This slasher movie satire is just as witty as the former, as arguably more funny than the latter. To be clear: the Tim Story movie did fine ($18.6M gross on a $5M budget), and it has a sequel in development (though it’s been a while since we’ve gotten an update), but it still feels like a lot of horror fans slept on The Blackening. Rectify that immediately!
• Streaming: August 1

Ghost Rider (2007) & Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance (2011)

• Premise: A motorcycle stuntman who sold his soul becomes a supernatural agent of vengeance. In the sequel, Johnny Blaze gets a chance of redemption by protecting the Devil’s son, whose father is pursuing him.
• Why Watch Them? If you saw the fuss at ComicCon earlier this week, you know that Ghost Rider is returning with Ryan Gosling playing the lead role. Expect the Shawn Levy version to look very different from the Mark Steven Johnson-directed original and its sequel, which hails from Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the duo behind the Crank films. Obviously the draw for both of these original films is Nicolas Cage  (in full Nic Cage mode), though the not-great CGI is a slight deterrent. Still, with Blaze back in the public consciousness, aren’t you curious to revisit?
• Streaming: August 1

Ghost Stories (2017)

• Premise: After receiving a file with details of three unexplained cases of apparitions, skeptical professor Phillip Goodman embarks on a terrifying trip.
• Why Watch It? This UK anthology is based on Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman‘s 2010 stage play of the same name. The film got good reviews upon its release (we’re looking at an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes), and it has Martin Freeman in a supporting role. I’ve never seen it, but considering the slim pickings this month, this is arguably one of the best options if you’re cruising Tubi for free content.
• Streaming: August 1

Imaginary (2024)

• Premise: A woman returns to her childhood home to discover that the imaginary friend she left behind is very real and unhappy that she abandoned him.
• Why Watch It? Alright look, by now you’ve probably realized that Tubi is treating August like the dog days of summer and giving us the scraps. Imaginary is a dog of a film: boring, full of wasted potential, and a criminal waste of star DeWanda Wise. It’s real bad, so why not stock up your guilty pleasure snacks, grab a drink or two, and do a Jeff Wadlow double bill with this and his new Amazon shark movie?
• Streaming: August 4

Mimic (1997)

• Premise: Three years ago, entomologist Dr. Susan Tyler genetically created an insect to kill cockroaches carrying a virulent disease. Now the insects are out to destroy their only predator: mankind.
• Why Watch It? Guillermo del Toro‘s first US film was famously a disaster as he butted heads with the Weinstein brothers at Dimension. Even though parts of the film don’t work, however, it’s still very much a del Toro film, including his trademark practical creatures. Throw in a subject matter that feels oddly prescient (humanity playing god accidentally creates something even worse) a totally solid Mira Sorvino, and it’s a decent time. Plus: anytime you see Jeremy Northam, it feels like a blast from the past! (See also: The Net)
• Streaming: August 1

Scream: The TV Series (2015)

• Premise: A serialized series that follows a group of teenagers being targeted by a masked serial killer.
• Why Watch It? Credit to the series for trying something kind of different. Four years after the failure of Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s Scream 4, MTV tried their hand at a TV show that discarded Sidney, Gale, Dewey and even the traditional Ghostface mask. Starring a then-unknown Willa Fitzgerald, the series tried to improve on the model that CBS’ Harper’s Island never managed to crack: a weekly serialized slasher. It kinda worked: the TV series ran for two years before it went dark, before returning in anthology form in 2019 for one final abbreviated season. Scream: The TV Series isn’t wholly successful, but it is a curiosity, especially if you missed it a decade ago.
• Streaming: August 1

They (2002)

• Premise: A psychology student and her friends start to have nightmares, resulting in strange marks appearing on their bodies.
• Why Watch It? Speaking of Wes Craven! Remember when the master of horror used to “present” – ie: throw his name onto – any generic piece of sh*t horror film? This is one of them! (Or if it “one of they”?) Yeah, look, no one is pretending that The Hitcher director Richard Harmon made a masterpiece, but the cast, which includes Buffy‘s Marc Blucas, Dead Silence‘s Laura Regan, and Ethan Embry suggests this should be watchable (spoiler alert: it’s not!)
• Streaming: August 1

In the film, “When wedding band keyboardist Emily discovers an old karaoke machine in the back of a dive bar, she thinks it will lead to a fun-filled night of singing and bonding with her bandmates. Unfortunately, this karaoke machine seems to have a thirst for blood.”

“When the singing begins, so does the bloodshed.”

“When an excellent performance allows someone to be spared by the machine, the crew think they’ve figured out how to finally beat it. Proven almost immediately wrong, it takes more horrifying deaths and a visit from a mysterious stranger to realize they may have a chance at survival after all.”

Lexi Underwood (“Cruel Summer”), Case Walker (Monster High: The Movie), and Kat Cunning (Purple Hearts) star in the upcoming horror-comedy Bad Karaoke.

Chris Lightbody and Spencer Yaras wrote the screenplay.

“We were inspired to make this film after years of painful karaoke performances nearly put us in an early grave,” the directors said in a statement. “We found that many people have had near-death karaoke experiences and we wanted to play with that idea, as well as say something profound about the state of new music. But instead, we made Bad Karaoke.”

Inspired by the EC Comics tales, each episode of “Tales from the Crypt” offers a self-contained story hosted by the Crypt Keeper (John Kassir), a wisecracking corpse known for his macabre puns. With its signature unrestricted gore, profanity, and dark irony, the show’s styles range from comedy to drama and deliver twisted moral lessons where “bad people” meet poetically horrific ends – and issues like greed, lust, and moral decay lead to tragic consequences.

This animated continuation is, warts and all, a notable example of turning a hit movie into a hit series. And although the new target demographic skewed a little younger, even kids-at-heart could partake in the further adventures of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore and Egon Spengler.

For a good part of its run, the show required fans to wait at least a week for more Ghostbustin’. That’s torture for a kiddo. Luckily, though, the entire series, or at least most of it, is now available for streaming.

So, as you revisit The Real Ghostbusters on Tubi—for now it’s just the first five seasons there—use this guide to help prioritize some must-see episodes.

The Boogieman Cometh

Season One’s “The Boogieman Cometh” is a classic episode featuring one of the show’s more iconic villains. It’s hard to forget the unique character design used for the Boogieman (whose creepy voice was provided by Ray and Slimer’s actor, Frank Welker). In this story, Egon is reunited with that bump-in-the-night entity who haunted his own childhood, all while trying to keep him away from his latest targets: the brother and sister claiming to have the Boogieman in their closet. Although the Ghostbusters do save the day here, the Boogieman eventually returns (“The Bogeyman Is Back“). That same episode also features the love-’em-or-hate-’em Junior Ghostbusters.

Mr. Sandman, Dream Me a Dream

You could say the namesake of “Mr. Sandman, Dream Me a Dream” had good intentions for putting mankind to sleep for the next few centuries—he wanted to end war and keep everyone dreaming. Sounds nice until you remember that whole free will business. But when it seems like the Ghostbusters have lost to their latest foe, the last one standing, Winston, gains a sudden ally. Janine’s dream of becoming a Ghostbuster is manifested, and she helps put this rogue spirit to bed.

When Halloween Was Forever

Before the show’s execs capitalized on Slimer’s popularity by making him the focus of later episodes, early stories like “When Halloween Was Forever” better utilized that gooey ghost. Here, the spirit of Halloween itself, Samhain, hopes to make the holiday a permanent thing by stopping time. And who does the embodiment of All Hallows’ Eve use in his nefarious plot? Slimer, of course. Thankfully, the lil’ green bud knows where he really belongs, and Samhain is banished (at least until Season 3’s “Halloween II 1/2“).

Night Game

Because Season Two was rather long, in comparison to other seasons, it accumulated quite a few solid episodes. One of the most beloved, though, is that ultimate good-versus-evil story, “Night Game“. Winston gets to shine here as he participates in a battle that was 500 years in the making. Except this time, the fighting is done on the baseball field. The other-dimensional settings in The Real Ghostbusters are always great, but the one here is particularly memorable.

Drool, the Dog-Faced Goblin

Not all ghosts and whatnot were bad in The Real Ghostbusters. As “Drool, the Dog-Faced Goblin” showed, some were actually benevolent. Sadly, it took a lot of convincing, and one very heroic act, for Peter and the others to see past this goblin’s grotesque appearance. The heroes find more than one shapeshifter at a sideshow carnival in the Poconos; a sinister Class-4er called the Metamorph does a swell job of menacing the Ghostbusters before they finally realize Drool’s not their culprit. The good guys indeed win here, but that victory is a bittersweet one.

The Collect Call of Cathulhu

While “The Collect Call of Cathulhu” does misspell “Cthulhu” in the title (probably to avoid legal issues), it is clearly the Old One in this Lovecraft-inspired episode. The story kicks off with the Necronomicon being stolen by the deity’s modern-day cult, who then raise their ancient god at Coney Island. From there, the Ghostbusters’ typical methods don’t work on the big guy, so they seek advice from an old issue of Weird Tales (or “Wierd Tales”, as it’s spelled on screen). That build-up to the finale comes with a decent amount of dread before the Ghostbusters, as well as a scholar named Alice, face off with one of the show’s most powerful entities.

Knock, Knock

A number of Real Ghostbusters episodes could be reworked into big-screen features, but perhaps “Knock, Knock” is the most hopeful. It helps that this story feels in step with the first two movies. Here, some ignorant construction workers accidentally uncover and open an ancient door in the subway. What’s behind said door is none other than those unspeakable evils that only the Ghostbusters can quell. A good deal of the imagery here is prime for adaptation.

The Grundel

One of the darker episodes, which was written by the prominent J. Michael Straczynski, is “The Grundel“. Here, a boy is being influenced by the titular entity, a type of ghost who ultimately turns his targets into new Grundels. The episode does have something of an after-school special quality to it, but that doesn’t take away from the eerier moments. For more Grundel lore, be sure to check out the episode “Grundelesque” from the sequel series, Extreme Ghostbusters.

Standing Room Only

It’s no secret that The Real Ghostbusters experienced multiple changes after the second season. Out of all of them, though, retooling the show so that Slimer would get more of the spotlight is maybe the most egregious. Thankfully, Season Four (the first to be called Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters) didn’t completely obey that new directive; episodes like “Standing Room Only” felt more like the old days. The focus here was on the well-being of the city and its people, rather than on the series’ green mascot (or the Junior Ghostbusters). In the episode, Peter’s new ghost attractor isn’t to blame for the ensuing chaos; the ghost-eating Mee-Krah is what’s really imperiling everyone. And the Ghostbusters must dish out everything they have to avoid a doomsday situation.

The Halloween Door

While many fans will skip the later seasons in their rewatches, episodes like “The Halloween Door” are still worth checking out. This colorful helping of Halloween pandemonium premiered on primetime, so the animation is better than usual. And save for a random musical moment, it’s an enjoyable event. Here, a group of anti-Halloweeners tries to cancel the holiday, but they only end up making things worse by unleashing a baddie named Boogaloo.

The first five seasons of The Real Ghostbusters are available on Tubi, starting on July 15.

New to Tubi July Horror Films

Deep Blue Sea (1999)

• Premise: Searching for a cure to Alzheimer’s disease, a group of scientists on an isolated research facility become the prey as a trio of intelligent sharks fight back.
• Why Watch It? Let’s be frank: Director Renny Harlin has made some absolute dogs in the last few years (the less said about The Strangers trilogy the better, though this year’s Deep Water was actually ok). Deep Blue Sea remains one of the Finnish director’s best contemporary efforts, though. Between the great cast (Samuel L. Jackson, Saffron Burrows, Stellan Skarsgård, Michael Rapaport, LL Cool J, Thomas Jane, and Jane’s sleeveless wetsuit), the ridiculous premise, and that damn/dumb song (“My hat is like a shark’s fin”), you basically can’t go wrong with Deep Blue Sea. It’s one of two great shark films gliding onto Tubi this month, so why not stay out of the water and watch this instead?
• Streaming: July 1

Exorcist II: Heretic (1977)

• Premise: Reagan (Linda Blair), a girl once possessed by a demon, finds that it still lurks within her. Meanwhile, Father Lamont (Richard Burton) investigates the death of the priest who performed her exorcism.
• Why Watch It? August sees the release of documentary Boorman and the Devil, which is about the troubled production of this sequel. The notoriety surrounding Heretic has undoubtedly kept plenty of horror fans away from the sequel, but this truly is a “seeing is believing” kind of film. Real talk: it’s undeniably a disaster, but the John Boorman film has also become a minor cult film. Don’t you want to see it to make up your own mind? 
• Streaming: July 1

Hostel: Part III (2011)

• Premise: Four men attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas fall prey to the Elite Hunting Club, who are hosting a gruesome game show of torture.
• Why Watch It? What does Hostel look like without Eli Roth? Part III kinda answers the question. Technically Roth is still a writer, but he hands over the directorial reins to Scott Spiegel (best known for acting in Evil Dead films). The result is a film with a terrible pedigree; it’s also the first (and last) entry to skip theatres before the franchise was permanently shelved (until that TV show with Paul Giamatti shows up?). For some horror fans, however, there’s something exciting about a bad low-budget sequel. Just bear in mind that the Hostel: Part III‘s biggest star is Kip Pardue…so adjust your expectations accordingly before hitting play.
• Streaming: July 1

Insidious 1-3 (2010/2013/2015)

• Premise: A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.
• Why Watch It? It’s hard to believe that the sixth (!) Insidious movie is coming out in a month and a half, but James Wan and Leigh Whannell‘s other horror franchise has been steadily chugging along for sixteen years. It’s a shame that Tubi doesn’t have all five films available to watch, but in terms of quality, you can do far worse than the original trio. The first film is iconic, and the second is basically an extended coda (with some admittedly problematic stuff going on). I’ll go to bat for Whannell’s 2015 directorial debut, though: there’s a few banger sequences in that film that people slept on.
• Streaming: July 1

Man Finds Tape (2025)

• Premise: After finding mysterious video clips, siblings investigate the strange recordings and uncover a disturbing secret spreading through their Texas town.
• Why Watch It? Writer/directors Paul Gandersman and Peter S. Hall‘s well-received found footage film did an extensive tour of the festival circuit, so now is a great time to check out one of the most contemporary titles debuting on Tubi this month. Surely a title that hails from producers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Spring and The Endless) is worth a free look?
• Streaming: July 2

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)

• Premise: A depressed musician Adam (Tom Hiddleston) reunites with his lover Eve (Tilda Swinton). However, their romance, which has already endured several centuries, is disrupted by the arrival of her uncontrollable younger sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska).
• Why Watch It? This beautiful, melancholy vampire film is courtesy of writer/director Jim Jarmusch, who doesn’t often dabble in genre fare. As always, some will quibble if this artsy drama qualifies as horror, but the existential ennui of an eternal life certainly qualifies (bonus: there’s also something inherently sexy about watching Hiddleston and Swinton just lay about). Plus: if Leviticus has you hankering for more Wasikowska, this is an under the radar pick.
• Streaming: July 1

The Shallows (2016)

• Premise:A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy (Blake Lively) is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills.
• Why Watch It? What better time to watch a shark movie than July? The temperatures are soaring and the idea of escaping into the water is so tantalizing. This tight, contained thriller features a great performance by Lively (and that damn seagull!), but it’s the direction from genre fave Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan; the House of Wax remake) that keeps the movie clicking along like clockwork. At 86 minutes, this is a perfect summer flick.
• Streaming: July 1

Vacancy (2007)

• Premise: Stranded in an isolated motel, a couple (Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale) become the unsuspecting subjects of a snuff film.
• Why Watch It? I’m not going to pretend that this Nimród Antal-directed home invasion film is high art, but it is a good time. You’ll likely wish there were deeper characterizations for Wilson and Beckinsale’s David and Amy in Mark L. Smith‘s screenplay, but this mid-aughts thriller is tense, exciting, and just the right amount of grimy. Plus: another short runtime, clocking in at an expeditious 85 minutes!
• Streaming: July 1

• Premise: When a mysterious stranger moves in next door to Robert and Tabitha, boundaries are tested, loyalty is questioned, and danger comes for all.

• Premise: Sarah thinks she’s found “the one” until his flaws emerge. When she pulls away, chilling threats suggest he’s watching her from inside her own home.

Written and directed by Christopher B. Stokes, the new film stars Taye Diggs as Leon/Kennedy/Darnell, a man in search of the perfect family and willing to kill for it. Following Panic Room-inspired opening credits stretched across downtown buildings, Stepfather opens in 1990 when 10-year-old Leon talks with therapist Marsha Sanders (Lisa Ann Loggins) in the wake of his stepfather Harold’s (Kenneth J. Morgan) death.

In flashbacks, it’s revealed that Harold beat young Leon and, in the process, instilled a key tenet that would define Leon as an adult: “too bad you don’t get to pick your own family.” It’s also evident that Leon allowed Harold to die: following a pretty upsetting beating, the boy watched his stepfather pass from a heart attack rather than call 911.

The film then flashes ahead to the present as adult Leon, now named Kennedy, murders his latest family (this will later be revealed to be his third, stretched across Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico). He then introduces himself to Asia (Tamar Braxton) and her youngest daughter, Sasha (Kalani Jules), as Darnell in a grocery store meet-cute.

Asia has just moved her family away from her cheating ex, Timothy (TJ Shaw). Emotionally vulnerable and susceptible to flattery, Asia and Darnell quickly hit it off and, six months later, they have eloped.

The biggest issue with Stokes’ film is that it is both too slight and too familiar. Surprisingly, no one, Darnell is a model husband and stepfather right up until the moment his “perfect” family fails to meet his expectations. When Sasha repeatedly refuses to refer to him as Dad because she misses Timothy, there’s a visual fake-out of Darnell striking and/or yelling at her. These interior glimpses of Darnell’s rage eventually escalate into real-life outbursts, often when he confuses Asia and the kids for the families he’s killed in the past.

One novel visual choice occurs when Darnell accepts that he must terminate his latest imperfect family. As the police close in, he rents a cheap motel room and engages in a three-way conversation with phantom hallucinations of Leon and Kennedy, each of whom has their own distinct costume, vocal mannerism, and personality.

It’s a moment that’s reminiscent of M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, not just for Diggs’ solid performance as three different personas, but also for its questionable pop psychology about mental health. When the police interview Marsha, she unloads a torrent of exposition about her patient’s condition (without a warrant!), explaining: “Leon suffers from extreme trauma…bipolar and schizophrenia, as well as hallucinations,” which he apparently can’t distinguish from reality. Marsha is quick to explain that Leon/Darnell doesn’t even know he’s committed a crime.

It’s an outdated and tired line of thinking, which is unfortunate because it undercuts Diggs’s performance, which is the only reason to check out Stepfather. While Braxton is fine as the deluded housewife torn between husbands new and old, Asia lacks any kind of interiority. The character exists solely in relation to Darnell, a criticism that applies to both of her two daughters, Sasha, the obstacle to Darnell’s fantasy family life, and Melanie (Jessica Jarrell), the College-aged daughter who is more than happy to call Darnell “dad” because she sees how happy her mother is.

Alas, Stokes never pushes the plot or the characters beyond the most obvious situations, which leads to plenty of predictable dinner and bedroom scenes as the female characters inadvertently trigger Darnell’s psychosis and he fantasizes about murdering them. Any men who wander into the proceedings, such as Timothy or Melanie’s boyfriend, Brad (Koda Kalani Beschen), are obvious Red Shirts destined for slaughter. By contrast, Asia’s curious (and possibly queer-coded) brother, Brett (Troy Brookins), is never given an opportunity to do anything.

And then there are the cops, who occupy a substantial amount of screentime and repeatedly threaten to launch the film into camp territory. With the exception of Detective Bronson (Darrell Philip), who takes “Kennedy’s” statement after the murder of his wife and stepdaughter, every single member of law enforcement in the film is inept, belligerent, or flat-out rude.

Young, boastful Detective John Simmons (Ma‘s Dante Brown) joins the squad late with an introduction that is both ageist, condescending, and completely out of left field. When Bronson outlines their profile of the killer, Simmons’ response is: “Ok, blah blah blah. It’s a lot of information on this killer dude. It’s like a movie.” Like…what?!

He immediately butts heads with new partner Detective Andrews (Janeline Hayes), who one expects might be more open-minded, but proves just as standoffish. Late in the film, when questioning a witness who has tangled with Darnell, Andrews berates the battered victim: “You assumed he was dead, but you didn’t wait to see?!” Even a random police officer gets in on the asshole behavior, heavily inferring that Asia’s promiscuous behavior is to blame for a fight between Darnell and Timothy that leaves the latter with multiple broken ribs.

The baffling human responses across the board feel out of place with the more serious threats of domestic violence, making for an extremely uneven viewing experience. If the film played up its ridiculous elements more, Stepfather could be a fun diversion in the Hallmark/Lifetime vein. Unfortunately, most of its perplexing elements feel accidental, rather than intentional.

Despite Diggs’ commitment to the bit, there just isn’t enough here to recommend. Stepfather could have been a fun guilty pleasure, but Stokes is too content to stick to well-tread narrative beats without offering anything new. Underdeveloped characters and fleeting violent set pieces simply don’t cut it, which makes the brief 93-minute runtime drag badly.

File this under a disappointing missed opportunity.

New to Tubi June Horror Films

Alien Vs. Predator (2004)

• Premise: During an archaeological expedition on Bouvetøya Island in Antarctica, a team of archaeologists and other scientists find themselves caught up in a battle between the two legends. Soon, the team realizes that only one species can win.
• Why Watch It? Nothing says summer like a trip to Antarctica, right? The reality is that Alien Vs Predator is the perfect popcorn flick: it’s completely mindless fluff. No real characters of substance. No philosophical lore or mythology building. It’s just classic Paul W.S. Anderson action nonsense, featuring two iconic horror franchises coming together with a lot of Red Shirt collateral damage in between. Oh, and poor Sanaa Lathan, doing her best to inject some characterization into Alexa. To be clear: Lathan is great, but there’s just nothing in Anderson’s screenplay for her to work with, though she acquits herself well in the action sequences.
• Streaming: June 1

All Of Us Strangers (2023)

• Premise: A screenwriter drawn back to his childhood home enters into a fledgling relationship with his downstairs neighbor while discovering a mysterious new way to heal from losing his parents 30 years ago.
• Why Watch It? Celebrated queer writer/director Andrew Haigh‘s loose adaptation of Taichi Yamada‘s novel features a deeply affecting pair of performances from leads Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal. On the surface, this is a sad drama about a pair of men struggling to connect, and the difficulties of loving someone when you don’t love yourself. It’s also <spoiler alert> a secret ghost film, albeit more in the “curl up in a fetal position crying” than in the “scary boo” sense. Which is to say: perfect for Pride season!
• Streaming: June 1

Blink Twice (2024)

• Premise: When tech billionaire Slater King meets cocktail waitress Frida at his fundraising gala, he invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. As strange things start to happen, Frida questions her reality.
• Why Watch It? Actor Zoë Kravitz made her feature film directorial debut with this twisty thriller that features a criminally under celebrated lead performance by Naomi Ackie. The film isn’t an easy watch, especially when you figure out what Channing Tatum‘s Slater and his cadre of shitty dudes are up to, but it’s brilliantly shot and features one hell of a cathartic finale. Plus, said shitty dudes are played by Christian Slater, Simon Rex, and Haley Joel Osment in the best against-type casting since Promising Young Woman.
• Streaming: June 1

Brightburn (2019)

• Premise: An alien that looks like a human boy uses its powers in sinister and destructive ways.
• Why Watch It? The simplicity of Brightburn is arguably its biggest selling feature: what if a child with Superman’s powers was bad? Writers Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn don’t really do much more than that, which may be why the David Yarovesky film was considered something of a disappointment at the time of its release. (In the film’s defence: it made $33M worldwide on a $6M budget). Still, if you’re looking for some cool sequences, a solid performance by Elizabeth Banks as a perturbed mother, and a super dark ending that begs for a sequel, this is an easy way to kill 90 minutes.
• Streaming: June 1

Congo (1995)

• Premise: When an expedition to the African Congo ends in disaster, a new team is assembled to find out what went wrong.
• Why Watch It? There’s no denying that this is a bad film. Made at the height of Hollywood’s enthusiasm for all things Michael Crichton, this adaptation of the 1980 book was always doomed to be a silly mess. But guess what? It’s partially filmed on location and has a totally solid cast (come for Laura Linney, try not to focus on bland Dylan Walsh, and yearn for more of whatever Tim Curry is doing). Also: do you like gem-powered lasers and men-in-suit gorillas? Because the climax features our intrepid humans laying waste to a cacophony of the latter using the former during a volcanic eruption. It’s extremely dumb…and very fun.
• Streaming: June 1

Independence Day (1996)

• Premise: The aliens are coming, and their goal is to invade and destroy Earth. Fighting superior technology, mankind’s best weapon is the will to survive.
• Why Watch It? Leave behind your pedantic definitions of what constitutes a horror movie and embrace the disaster flick, everyone! This is the grand-daddy of contemporary examples, helmed by out gay director Roland Emmerich at the height of his destructive powers. Seriously: name another director with a greater appetite for making movies where things go BOOM (my kingdom for a reality show pitting him against Wolfgang Petersen). The film turns 30 next month, and the titular holiday is similarly on the horizon, so what better time to revisit Will Smith at the height of his box office prowess? “Welcome to Earth” indeed.
• Streaming: June 15

I Saw The TV Glow (2024)

• Premise: In late-90s suburbia, a lonely teenager meets a girl at school who introduces him to a mysterious late-night T.V. show. As time goes on, however, questions begin to arise about why the show sometimes seems more real than their own lives.
• Why Watch It? Where to begin: this is arguably one of the most important pieces of queer (horror) media produced in the last few years. It features incredible performances from stars Justice Smith and Jack Haven. It scratches the nostalgic itch for Buffy the Vampire Slayer while also gently reminding us that making fandom our personality can have dangerous implications. It’s also a stunningly gorgeous film that’s filled with evocative and unsettling imagery (trigger warning for body dysmorphia). Oh, how about this reason: writer/director Jane Schoenbrun‘s latest, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, debuts in August, and it’s Pride month!
• Streaming: June 1

The Last House Of The Left (2009)

• Premise: After kidnapping and brutally assaulting two young women, a gang unknowingly finds refuge at a vacation home belonging to the parents of one of the victims: a mother and father who devise an increasingly gruesome series of revenge tactics.
• Why Watch It? There’s no denying the fact that this is a tough watch. The sexual assault scene more than merits a content warning, but for audiences who can stomach a rape/revenge film, this brutal remake is worth checking out. By this point in the 2000s, horror audiences’ enthusiasm for remakes was waning heavily, which unfortunately means that this redo of the Wes Craven original doesn’t get talked about much. This is another title with a stellar cast, though: Monica Potter and Tony Goldwyn are the parents; Garret Dillahunt, Rikki Lindhome, and a pre-Breaking Bad Aaron Paul are the baddies. Just overlook the very stupid closing scene, and you’re good to go!

• Premise: A small group of American soldiers find horror behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day.
• Why Watch It? Overlord is one of those wild adrenaline horror movies that feels like the creative team brainstormed a bunch of gnarly FX, tense set pieces, and a variety of subgenres before blitzing them all in a blender. I’d be lying if I said I remembered much about the plot of Julius Avery‘s revisionist history Nazi experimentation/infection film, but I do remember thinking that the action and the violence go hard. Plus: the cast is composed of a ton of now recognizable folks, including Wyatt Russell, Agents of SHIELD‘s Iain De Caestecker, IT: Welcome to Derry‘s Jovan Adepo, Interview with the Vampire‘s Jacob Anderson, Stranger Things’ Joseph Quinn, and Bokeem Woodbine.

It’s a thriller that’s not billed as a remake of 1987’s The Stepfather, but it definitely sounds like a modern update. With a larger, blended family this time, all signs are pointing to a higher body count.

Chris Stokes (I Didn’t Do It) directs Stepfather, which is set to debut exclusively on Tubi on June 19.

Kalani Jules (Find Me in the Void), Jessica Jarrell (Hijacked), Janeline Hayes (Girl’s Trip), Dante Brown (Dash and Lily), Troy Brookins (Stargirl), TJ Shaw (Babysplitters), Koda Kalani Beschen (Chemical Sundown), and Elizabeth Dantus (The Sweetest Heir) also star.

Variety shares that Tubi has acquired the North American rights to the anime series, while Cartoon Network will run it internationally.

In the show, while visiting Japan on the ultimate foodie adventure, Scooby-Doo and Shaggy unwittingly unleash hundreds of mythical monsters that are causing trouble across the country.

With the help of Scooby’s uncle Daisuke-Doo, magical girl Yume, and gadget whiz Takumi, the group embarks on a mystery filled with monster chasing and fun chaos.

“Yokoso Scooby-Doo!” — which means “Welcome Scooby-Doo!” — is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and animated by Japan’s OLM (“Pokémon,” Nyaight of the Living Cat).

Itsuro Kawasaki (“Psycho-Pass”) will direct, with Francisco Paredes (“Muppet Babies”) serving as co-producer.

“Scooby-Doo is one of the most beloved franchises in entertainment, and ‘Yokoso Scooby-Doo!’ lets us reinvent it in a way fans haven’t seen before,” said Tubi chief content officer Adam Lewinson. “By bringing Scooby and Shaggy into a bold anime world set in Japan, we’re connecting with global fandoms and delivering the kind of fun, chaotic mystery that travels across generations.”

“Welcome to Mystery Inc., Tubi!” added Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register. “We’re excited to partner on this next chapter as we push the Scooby-Doo franchise forward with its first-ever original anime series. Alongside the amazing artists at OLM, we’ll unmask a new batch of mysteries, signature hijinks, and – of course – plenty of Scooby Snacks, all brought to life through the dynamic artistry of anime.”

Welker is the original voice of Fred, dating back to 1969’s “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You,” and has been the voice of Scooby-Doo for more than two decades. Lillard played Shaggy in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies before voicing the character in several animated series and movies.

Meanwhile, Netflix is currently in production on “Scooby-Doo: Origins,” a live-action series starring Mckenna Grace, Maxwell Jenkins, Tanner Hagen, and Abby Ryder Fortson.

American Carnage (2022)

• Premise: After a governor issues an executive order to arrest the children of undocumented immigrants, the newly detained youth are offered an opportunity to have their charges dropped by volunteering to care for the elderly.
• Why Watch It? This title from Diego Hallivis (who co-writes with Julio Hallivis) received mixed reviews upon its release, but its subject matter is even more timely and relevant now, considering what’s going on with ICE. There may be some catharsis to be found in a satirical take on real-life horrors, especially when the biting jokes are delivered by someone as likeable and talented as star Jenna Ortega.
• Streaming: May 1

Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

• Premise: When a group of rich 20-somethings plans a hurricane party at a remote family mansion, a party game turns deadly.
• Why Watch It? In hindsight, one of the biggest selling features of Halina Reijn’s millennial satire is its stunning cast, which includes Amandla Stenberg, Myha’la, Maria Bakalova, Lee Pace, Chase Sui Wonders, and Rachel Sennott (Pete Davidson is also there). The buzzy A24 title is centered around a dangerous distraction during a storm, but that’s hardly the point of this takedown of wealth, privilege, race, and sexuality. Double bill this title with Clue (see below) for a night of fun and games with two films that have more on their mind than meets the eye.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

• Premise: Centuries-old vampire Count Dracula (Gary Oldman) comes to England to seduce his barrister Jonathan Harker’s (Keanu Reeves) fiancée Mina Murray (Winona Ryder) and wreak havoc in a foreign land.
• Why Watch It? Oozing sensuality and boasting Oscar-nominated costumes by the incomparable Eiko Ishioka, director Francis Ford Coppola‘s lavish period piece features incredible in-camera FX and no less than two fantastic performances (Oldman is perfect, but it’s Anthony Hopkins‘ scenery-chewing turn as Dr. Van Helsing that steals the show). It’s classy, sexy, and gory (the Brides eat a baby!). 1992’s Dracula is the most opulent adaptation of Stoker’s work to date and remains the one to beat (nice try, Luc Besson!)
• Streaming: May 1

Clue (1985)

• Premise: Six guests are anonymously invited to a strange mansion for dinner, but after their host is killed, they must cooperate with the staff to identify the murderer as the bodies pile up.
• Why Watch It? The board game adaptation is one of the best comedies ever made, but it’s also a very fun murder mystery. There are plenty of deaths, secret passageways, ulterior motives, and outsized personalities scattered throughout the film. Scratch beneath the surface, and there’s also a healthy dose of commentary about both politics and queerness, just to name a few issues. The cast is composed of nothing but legends (Madeline Kahn’s infamous – and purportedly ad-libbed – line about “flames on the sides of my face” will never not be iconic). Plus: Star Tim Curry just celebrated his 80th (!) birthday last month, so what better way to fete the living legend? 
• Streaming: May 1

The Dead Zone (1983)

• Premise: Five years after a traffic accident left him in a coma, Johnny Smith (Christopher Walken) awakens to discover that he has the ability to foresee future events and even prevent tragedies from happening. Will these new abilities prove to be a blessing or a curse?
• Why Watch It? It’s impossible to go a month in the horror world without brushing up against a Stephen King adaptation. This month, check out the icy coolness of director David Cronenberg’s The Dead Zone, which follows Johnny as he tests his newfound abilities in an effort to save the world. The threat is courtesy of a (what else?!) corrupt politician, Greg Stillson (a perfectly cast Martin Sheen), with his finger on the nuclear option, though for my money the film is at its most exciting when Cronenberg leans into full slasher mode with a serial killer bathroom sequence.

De Palma (2015)

• Premise: An American documentary film directed by Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow about director and screenwriter Brian De Palma
• Why Watch It? Breaking away from narrative options, why not check out this 2015 A24 documentary about Brian De Palma that premiered at the Venice Film Festival? The title verges on autobiography as the infamous director reminisces about his varied career, which includes multiple genre titles such as Sisters, Blow Out, and, of course, Carrie. There are plenty of clips, anecdotes, and archival footage included from his films, which makes for a solid primer for those who may be less familiar with his work.
• Streaming: May 1

Don’t Breathe (2016)

• Premise: Three delinquents break into the house of a war veteran (Stephen Lang) who is blind to steal his money. However, they discover that the man is not as defenseless as he seems.
• Why Watch It? Fede Alvarez‘s reverse home invasion film is one of the most viscerally impactful genre films of the last decade. The tension that he crafts as the noose slowly tightens around Rocky (Jane Levy, returning to work with the director after 2013’s Evil Dead) is palpable, and the film features incredible sound design that makes the set pieces even more nerve-wracking. Sure, the film’s last act has a big sexual assault content warning, but if audiences can overcome the ick factor, Don’t Breathe is an adrenaline rush from start to finish.

Let The Right One In (2008)

• Premise: A bullied boy forms a unique friendship with his new neighbor, a peculiar girl with a dark secret.
• Why Watch It? The adaptation of Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist‘s coming-of-age Middle Grade story is sweet (the relationship between Oskar and Eli), chilly (snow-bound horror has never felt so frigid), and filled with surprising amounts of gore. The quiet and moody horror film isn’t afraid to go hard for maximum impact: simply consider the all-timer swimming pool-set climax, which features exquisite camera blocking about what’s happening above and below the water.
• Streaming: May 28

Practical Magic (1998)

• Premise: Two witch sisters (Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman), raised by their eccentric aunts (delightful pair Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest) in a small town, face closed-minded prejudice and a curse which threatens to prevent them from ever finding lasting love.
• Why? Griffin Dunne’s adaptation, which boasts frequent genre writer Akiva Goldsman, is mostly a whimsical romantic drama. But what audiences may have forgotten in the 28 years since the film’s release is that the entire last act of the film is a straight-up horror film. Sure, most of the film involves a cutesy plot wherein Bullock tries to prevent Aidan Quinn from dying from a paramour-killing family curse, but the Kidman side of the story features her dead domestic abuser (ER star Goran Visnjic) coming back from the grave as a vengeful ghost.
• Streaming: May 1

Slice (2018)

• Premise: When a pizza delivery driver is murdered on the job, the city searches for someone to blame: Ghosts? Drug dealers? A disgraced werewolf?
• Why Watch It? This Zazie Beetz film came and went without much fanfare back in the day, but now that she’s back in the conversation with They Will Kill You, perhaps the horror comedy deserves a reappraisal? The cast alone suggests a decent time: along with Beetz, you’ve got Hannibal Buress and Joe Keery.  There’s also something to be said for easy going horror fare. I mean, who doesn’t love pizza and bloodshed? Pop an edible, order a pie, and double bill this one along with Disney’s recent Pizza Movie.

Matched with disorienting camerawork from cinematographer Carmen Cabana and alternately squelchy and roaring sound effects on the soundtrack, the opening is both a standard horror movie cold open and deeply emblematic of Hive as a whole. The narrative messaging is deeply influenced by class and race, while the technical elements are playful and high energy.

The film’s protagonist is Sasha (Xochitl Gomez), a low-income girl with aspirations of living in an affluent gated community like Coral Grove. It’s her first day working as a nanny to a rich, entitled brat named Zaley (Victoria Firsova), whose mother Camille (Tanya van Graan) is the kind of stereotype who condescendingly refers to Sasha as “sweetpea” while fretting about the dangers of consuming sugar or playing with other kids.

Sasha puts on a brave face through all of this ridiculousness because she needs the money and a reference to a prestigious school. As her landscaper brother Marco (Aaron Dominguez) reminds Sasha, “We need this gig.” The money is tied to their livelihood, and it’s clear from an early call with her father that this job is an opportunity to help not just Sasha and her family, but also to ensure a future that extends beyond domestic labor.

Naturally, the conflict is that Coral Grove hides a nefarious secret (though, to be clear, it’s not exactly a Get Out situation). While the people are definitely part of the problem, the children are under the influence of something living beneath the ground that is fond of gobbling people up. And since people don’t miss nannies, housekeepers, and landscapers because they’re typically people of colour, Sasha and Marco are next on the hit list.

The commentary in Hive isn’t subtle, and it does tend to belabor the point a few too many times, particularly in the film’s last act, but that’s mostly forgiven because – despite its dark racial implications – it’s a surprisingly fun time. The majority of the film takes place around colorful playground equipment, weaponizing familiar items like swings, merry-go-rounds, kiddie pools, and slides in a variety of set pieces.

Sasha, Marco, and Marco’s co-worker Darius (Thulani Nzonzo) learn from the film’s harbinger, housekeeper Frances (Zenobia Kloppers), that Coral Grove has been infected by a creature that uses these items as traps. Unsuspecting targets are lured in, usually by infected children, and then swallowed up into a subterranean world that looks like a combination of construction site and abandoned children’s playroom.

Considering this is a relatively small film, Hive has a lot going for it with regard to sound, production design, and make-up. The camera is constantly on the prowl, which ensures that even in the more sedate interior scenes, it feels as if Sasha and the others are being stalked. Sound mixer Derek Mansvelt rachets up the tension by accentuating the sounds of the playground, along with hungry rumblings and angry roars from the entity, particularly as Sasha, Marco, and (eventually) Frances discover ways to fight back.

The bright visual aesthetic of the playground, including the ball pit in Zaley’s backyard, is sharply contrasted by the world below. For example, Hive gets plenty of mileage by turning the interior of a slide into a threatening tarp with laughing, chanting children lurking around the bend.

It doesn’t hurt that the action sequences tend to involve a horde of infected individuals. Since the creature itself is never visually seen, Vargas’ screenplay wisely uses the Coral Grove residents as a stand-in. Sasha and Marco routinely find themselves surrounded by a circle of children who move and chant in unison. They’re not acting of their own volition, though; as Frances will explain later, they’re in a kind of spell, snapping to command before violent outbursts; then they’re released, bewildered, and none the wiser about the horrors that they’ve committed.

These moments, with their child-like rhymes mocking victims, herky-jerky motions, and acrobatic feats (expect back bends aplenty!), effectively toe the line between threatening, silly, and exciting. There’s something delightfully Goosebumps-y about Hive that makes it feel both familiar and distinct, so even though the film sometimes pulls its punches when it comes to stakes or leans too heavily into obvious messaging, it’s still a fun time.

Tubi originals can be a little inconsistent, but thanks to its candy-colored production design, evocative sound design, grotesque scabby yellow make-up, and prowling camerawork, Hive is a solid watch.

Xochitl Gomez (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Aaron Dominguez (“Only Murders in the Building”) star as siblings dealing with an eerie playground filled with creepy kids in Hive, a brand new Tubi Original horror movie that’s now streaming on Tubi.

The horror movie follows “a strict, anxious teenager (Xochitl Gomez) who loses the child she’s babysitting and must brave a sinister force hiding in plain sight among the children in the playground. As her world unravels and her grip on reality starts to slip, she must outwit a world where nothing is as it seems, to make it out alive.”

Zenobia Kloppers, Victoria Firsova, Tanya van Graan, Jenny le Roux, and Thulani Nzonzo also star. Felipe Vargas writes and directs, adapting his own short film.

The further you hear it, the closer it is in The Whistler, based on the Venezuelan legend El Silbón. Previously known as The Fields Are Watching, the film is now available on VOD outlets.

The supernatural film stars Diane Guerrero (“Doom Patrol”) and Juan Pablo Raba (“Narcos”).

The story follows a couple, reeling from the loss of their daughter, who unexpectedly inherit a secluded farm. Hoping to start fresh, they instead encounter a cult claiming it can summon spirits from beyond, forcing them to deal with dark forces and their own inner demons.

Diego Velasco (“Orange Is the New Black”) directs from a script he co-wrote Esteban Orozco (“El Chapo”) and Carolina Paiz (“Orange Is the New Black”), based on an earlier screenplay by Nacho Palacios. Indhira Serrano, Laureano Olivarez, Laura Sofía Domínguez, and Norberto Rivera round out the cast of The Whistler.

Writer-director Lee Cronin channels his Evil Dead Rise in The Mummy, a fresh new take on the classic movie monster. It’s now playing only in theaters from Warner Bros.

In Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, a journalist’s young daughter disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.

Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Laia Costa (“The Wheel of Time”), May Calamawy (“Moon Knight”), Natalie Grace (“1923”), and Veronica Falcón (“Ozark”) star.

The film is rated R for “strong disturbing violent content, gore, language, and brief drug use.”

The psychosexual pop thriller Mother Mary starring Anne Hathaway opened in New York and Los Angeles today before hitting theaters nationwide on April 24 via A24.

A Māori woman fights to reclaim her identity in Mārama, a genre-bending Gothic horror tale that marks the feature debut of Indigenous Māori writer-director Taratoa Stappard.

Dark Sky Films and Watermelon Pictures opened the film today at the IFC Center in New York City and the Laemmle Monica Film Center and Laemmle Glendale in Los Angeles.

Supernatural horror film Salmokji: Whispering Water had the strongest opening for a Korean horror film since 2024’s Exhuma at the Korean box office, and the film is now playing in select theaters in North America beginning today. Check your local listings.

In Salmokji: Whispering Water, an unidentified figure is captured in a street-view image of Salmokji, a remote reservoir. A reshoot is required to contain the situation — but a sense of dread surrounds the location, and no one is eager to return.

Despite the unease, Su-in leads the crew in place of her senior colleague, who previously vanished after visiting the area. The shoot quickly begins to unravel as crew members experience disturbing phenomena that defy explanation.

As the deep end of Salmokji reveals traces of something lurking beneath the surface, the team is forced to confront a presence that refuses to remain unseen–and a truth that should have never been surfaced.

Faces of Death – Now Playing in Theaters

The infamous Faces of Death tapes are back in brand new movie Faces of Death, which revives the cult classic 1970s faux documentary with a fresh meta take on the disturbing material.

Faces of Death is now playing in theaters from IFC and Shudder.

Continuing the exploration of the original film’s ‘Is it real or not?’ conceit, the reboot follows a woman working as a content moderator for a video platform who discovers what appears to be re-enactments of murders from Faces of Death. In an online world where nothing can be trusted, she must determine whether the violence is fiction or unfolding in real time.

Hunting Matthew Nichols – Now Playing in Theaters

Found footage finds itself back up on the big screen in director Markian Tarasiuk’s Hunting Matthew Nichols, and the indie horror movie is now playing only in theaters.

Here are thirteen new horror movies releasing in April 2026.

Rabisu: Curse of the Demon – On Digital April 3

One of many upcoming found footage horror movies here in 2026 is the indie Rabisu: Curse of the Demon, available on VOD outlets at home on April 3 via DeskPop Entertainment.

In December ’25, a group of ghost hunters entered a warehouse in Salt Lake City. They were searching for views, but what they found was an ancient evil from Mesopotamian mythology.

That footage is now being released. Rabisu: Curse of the Demon follows a rising paranormal investigation team that acts on an anonymous tip, leading them to a remote warehouse rumored to contain the sealed remains of an ancient Assyrian djinn. Once inside, the group encounters a labyrinth of curated mannequins, toys, and costumes — until the lights fail.

When power returns, one member begins exhibiting signs of possession, revealing the entity’s chilling ability to manipulate minds and incite violence. With exits sealed and the building itself seemingly shifting, the team uncovers remnants of a failed prior investigation and races to contain the demon before it destroys them from within.

Hunter King (“The Young and the Restless”), Chase Ramsey (Horizon: An American Saga), Austin Archer (Horizon: An American Saga), Lindsay Foster (Horizon: An American Saga), Tariq Brown, and Wes Brown (“True Blood”) star in Rabisu: Curse of the Demon. The infamous Faces of Death tapes are back in brand new movie Faces of Death, which revives the cult classic 1970s faux documentary with a fresh meta take on the disturbing material.

IFC and Shudder will release Faces of Death in theaters April 10.

Continuing the exploration of the original film’s ‘Is it real or not?’ conceit, the reboot follows a woman working as a content moderator for a video platform who discovers what appears to be re-enactments of murders from Faces of Death. In an online world where nothing can be trusted, she must determine whether the violence is fiction or unfolding in real time.

Identical twins Michelle Macedo (“Girlboss”) and Melissa Macedo (V/H/S/99) star as a woman suffering from body dysmorphia and her ravenous doppelgänger in Thinestra.

The grotesque, darkly comedic body horror film will be released April 14.

Thinestra tells the story of Penny, a young woman tormented by body dysmorphia and relentless societal pressures around perfection. When Penny impulsively takes a mysterious, Ozempic-esque weight-loss drug, she experiences a horrifying transformation. The fat she sheds returns as her ravenous doppelgänger, Penelope, and chaos ensues.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy – In Theaters April 17

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin is back with The Mummy in theaters on April 17, a brand new take on the classic monster that promises punishing Evil Dead-style violence.

In the film, said to put a fresh twist on the classic monster, a journalist’s young daughter disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.

“This is a very different kind of Mummy movie,” Cronin promises. “It’s an insane mashup to suggest, but [the film is] almost one part Poltergeist and one part Se7en.”

Xochitl Gomez and Aaron Dominguez star as siblings dealing with an eerie playground filled with creepy kids in Hive, the latest original horror movie from free streamer Tubi.

Hive is set to premiere exclusively on Tubi April 17.

The upcoming Tubi Original horror movie follows a strict, anxious teenager (Xochitl Gomez) who loses the child she’s babysitting and must brave a sinister force hiding in plain sight among the children in the playground. As her world unravels and her grip on reality starts to slip, she must outwit a world where nothing is as it seems, to make it out alive.

Zenobia Kloppers, Victoria Firsova, Tanya van Graan, Jenny le Roux, and Thulani Nzonzo also star in Hive, from writer/director Felipe Vargas (Rosario).

Itch! – On Digital April 21

You scratch, you die. Drawing inspiration from Dawn of the Dead, The Mist, and 28 Days Later, a new kind of infection spreads when Itch! releases on Digital beginning April 21.

A horrific outbreak known as “the itch” spreads like wildfire, turning victims into frenzied, self-destructive shells of their former selves. Grieving widower Jay seeks refuge in a department store alongside his estranged young daughter, Olivia. The sanctuary they believed would protect them becomes a nightmarish trap, revealing that the true danger lurks among them.

With the infection closing in and paranoia escalating within the group, Jay and Olivia are forced into a harrowing battle — not just against the outbreak outside, but against the darkness within human hearts when faced with survival. Mother Mary – In Theaters April 24

Written and directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight, A Ghost Story), the “psychosexual pop thriller” Mother Mary stars Anne Hathaway, and the film opens in New York and Los Angeles April 17 before hitting theaters nationwide April 24 via A24.

In Mother Mary, “long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance.”

Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs round out the cast.

The movie features original songs by Jack Antonoff, Charli xcx, and FKA Twigs.

Over Your Dead Body – In Theaters April 24

Jason Segel (“Shrinking”) and Samara Weaving (Ready or Not 2) keep their relationship as fresh as an open wound in Over Your Dead Body, opening in theaters April 24.

In the remake of the 2021 Norwegian film The Trip, Segel and Weaving play a couple who head to a remote cabin to supposedly reconnect, but each has secret plans to kill the other.

The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, MacGruber) directs from a script by fellow “SNL” alumni Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney.

Timothy Olyphant (“Alien: Earth”), Paul Guilfoyle (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”), Keith Jardine (Love Lies Bleeding), and Juliette Lewis (“Yellowjackets”) also star.

Meagan Navarro writes in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “Over Your Dead Body is one of the funniest films of the year; it happens to be one of its bloodiest, too.”

Apex – Streaming on Netflix April 24

Charlize Theron must learn to hunt or be hunted in Apex. Described as Free Solo meets The Silence of the Lambs, the survival thriller is streaming April 24 only on Netflix.

Charlize Theron stars as Sasha, a grieving adrenaline junkie testing her limits in the remote and unforgiving Australian wilderness. She suddenly finds herself not only up against the elements, but also facing off against a ruthless and lethal predator. Taron Egerton (Carry-On) plays the killer, with Eric Bana (Deliver Us from Evil) rounding out the cast.

Baltasar Kormákur (Everest) directs from a script by Jeremy Robbins (“The Purge”).

Apex is rated R for “some strong violence, grisly images, nudity, and language.”

New to Tubi April Horror Films

Carrie (2013)

• Premise: A shy girl (Chloë Grace Moretz), outcast by her peers and sheltered by her religious mother (Julianne Moore), unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.
• Why Watch It: Tubi has several double bills this month, including the remake of Child’s Play and the Tom Holland ’88 original, but for my money, this remake is the more intriguing option. I won’t pretend that Kimberly Peirce‘s 2013 entry is flawless (blame studio interference and a possibly miscast Grace Moretz), but Moore taking over the religious zealot role is kinda genius, and the creative team is excessively queer (besides lead Grace Moretz, there’s director Peirce, and screenwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa). Plus, as my Horror Queers co-host Trace loves to say, the punishment for Portia Doubleday‘s Chris in the car crash climax is fantastic and mean. That sequence alone is worth the price of admission.
• Streaming: April 1

Child’s Play (2019)

• Premise: A mother (Aubrey Plaza) gives her 13-year-old son (Gabriel Bateman) a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.
• Why Watch It: Full confession: Back in 2019, I rallied people to dismiss this non-canonical entry because it was unclear if the film was actively hurting Don Mancini‘s attempt to get the TV series going (we would, of course, get Chucky S01 on Syfy back in 2021). While I haven’t revisited Lars Klevberg‘s update, I remember liking Plaza and a few of the deaths. The reality is that this franchise reboot can’t shake off accusations of a cash grab, and the screenwriting isn’t particularly innovative, but, in an alternate dimension, this was the last entry of the killer doll series. It’s a bizarre little fork in the franchise timeline that (maybe?) merits a fresh set of eyes.
• Streaming: April 1

Deadly Class S01 (2018)

• Premise: Marcus (Benjamin Wadsworth) is a disillusioned teen who is recruited into a storied high school for assassins. He struggles to maintain his moral code while navigating a ruthless curriculum and vicious social cliques.
• Why Watch It? Miles Orion Feldsott and Rick Remender‘s Syfy adaptation of Remender’s own comic series (co-created with Wesley Craig) wasn’t a success, but it was an ambitious curiosity. The one-season series takes a familiar premise (rich and powerful teens make life hell for the new kid), but thanks to a 10-episode run (and a back catalogue of comics to draw from), there was room for the show to breathe a little. It’s an extremely Canadian production (keep an eye out for Incident in a Ghostland‘s Taylor Hickson!), but the show still featured recognizable faces like Lana Condor and Benedict Wong. Plus: expect plenty of action and bloodletting; it is a school for assassins, after all.
• Streaming: April 1 (All 10 episodes)

Lamb (2021)

• Premise: A childless couple discovers a mysterious newborn on their farm in Iceland.
• Why Watch It? This month’s slow burn recommendation is a gorgeous folk horror title by writer/director Valdimar Jóhannsson. For some, Lamb doesn’t qualify as a horror film, but for my money, it has enough unsettling imagery and moments to merit a recommendation. Besides the absolutely gorgeous scenery, the sweater game is on point, and anything Noomi Rapace does is essential viewing (she’s eminently watchable). Sure, it’s a bit high brow and weird, but maybe a child/sheep wearing a flower crown is exactly the vibe you’re going for as we transition into Spring.
• Streaming: April 1

Predator (1987) / Predator 2 (1990)

• Premise: A team of commandos on a mission in a Central American jungle finds themselves hunted by an extraterrestrial warrior. Then, in the 1997-set sequel, Los Angeles police hunt a new alien creature in the urban metropolis.
• Why Watch Them? The Predator franchise has had a creative resurgence in the last few years (thanks primarily to Dan Trachtenberg‘s steady hand on no less than three different titles). It’s fascinating to revisit the OG titles, however, in no small part because they’re so different. The first film is a classic Arnold/McTiernan machismo-fest that oozes 80s-hangover charm; the sequel tackles urban politics (i.e., racism) and has some pretty gnarly gore. They feel worlds apart (almost literally), and in just the first two entries, it’s clear that the boundaries of what constituted a Predator film was already being tested and played with.
• Streaming: April 15 (both films)

Queen of the Damned (2002)

• Premise: In this loose sequel to 1994’s Interview with the Vampire, the vampire Lestat (now played by Stuart Townsend) becomes a rock star whose music wakes up the equally beautiful and monstrous queen of all vampires (Aaliyah).
• Why Watch It? We’re only a few months away from the third season of the AMC series, renamed The Vampire Lestat for its renewed focus on Lestat (Sam Reid). For the uninitiated, both S03 and Queen of the Damned are based on the third novel in Anne Rice‘s book series, though let’s all cross our fingers that the TV show improves on the shortcomings of Michael Rymer‘s 2002 film. The less said about Townsend’s performance the better, but if there is ONE reason to check out the film, it’s Aaliyah. She’s incredible and almost single-handedly makes the film watchable. The problem? Her screen time ranges from supporting character (if you’re being generous) to cameo (if you’re not). There simply isn’t enough of her!
• Streaming: April 1

Scary Movie 1-3 (2000; 2001; 2003)

• Premise: A year after disposing of the body of a man they accidentally killed, a group of dumb teenagers is stalked by a bumbling serial killer. In the sequel, the survivors are tricked by a professor into visiting a haunted house for a school project. In the threequel, Cindy (Anna Faris) must investigate mysterious crop circles and videotapes, and help the President in preventing an alien invasion.
• Why Watch Them? I’m not going to pretend that the Scary Movie films are horror titles, BUT with the Wayans Brothers returning to relaunch the parody franchise in just a few months with Scary Movie (2026), there’s no better time to revisit the films. The first film is the cinematic equivalent of a WayBack Machine that (re)captures the ubiquitous impact of Scream and the second cycle of slashers in the late 90s. Scary Movie 2‘s ability to pivot and mock The Haunting and J-Horror titles is a reminder of how quickly horror subgenres come and go, while Scary Movie 3 (when the Zucker brothers take over) has arguably the funniest gags in the series (Camryn Manheim‘s changing hats; the cold-open mocking The Ring). Fun fact: thank The Last of Us‘s Craig Mazin for that last one, he’s a co-writer on the script.
• Streaming: April 1 (all three films)

Volcano (1997)

• Premise: A volcano erupts in downtown Los Angeles and a city official and a seismologist try to stop its inevitable flow through the city.
• Why Watch It? This was that uniquely specific time in Hollywood when we got two versions of seemingly every film (see also: the 1998 rivalry of Armageddon and Deep Impact). Volcano was in direct competition with another 1997 lava-themed flick, Dante’s Peak…and the Tommy Lee Jones/Anne Heche title lost. It’s a shame because Volcano‘s urban setting lends it a very different feel than the small town vibes of its Pierce Brosnan counterpart. Not only is Jones doing his usual gruff, dependable leading man, but Volcano features at least one all-timer set piece set in the Los Angeles subway (hint: it involves a man leaping from a subway car into the magma). There’s a bunch of visceral body horror stuff here and audiences slept on it!
• Streaming: April 1

Hive is set to premiere exclusively on Tubi on Friday, April 17.

The horror movie follows “a strict, anxious teenager (Xochitl Gomez) who loses the child she’s babysitting and must brave a sinister force hiding in plain sight among the children in the playground. As her world unravels and her grip on reality starts to slip, she must outwit a world where nothing is as it seems, to make it out alive.”

Zenobia Kloppers, Victoria Firsova, Tanya van Graan, Jenny le Roux, and Thulani Nzonzo also star.

Watch the new trailer below, which teases something supernatural behind the kids’ murderous intent. There’s something very off about this neighborhood.

Felipe Vargas writes and directs, adapting his short film of the same name. Gomez starred in Vargas’s “Hive” short film, too, which was told in real time. The Rosario filmmaker made his debut with the 2020 viral short Milk Teeth and is currently attached to helm folkloric horror movie The Mouth of the Furnace.

The film is produced by Blue Ice Pictures, alongside Nick Scully, Adam Friedlander, and Darren Cameron. Lance Samuels and Samantha Levine serve as Executive Producers.

Look for the socially conscious horror-thriller to debut exclusively next month on Tubi.

Variety reports that Danishka Esterhazy (Slumber Party Massacre, Tubi’s viral hit Match) will direct Christopher Pike’s Remember Me movie from a script by Suzanne Keilly.

Suzanne Keilly previously wrote Esterhazy’s Slumber Party Massacre remake.

Brec Bassinger (Final Destination Bloodlines) and Charlie Gillespie (Sidelined 2: Intercepted) will star in Tubi original movie Remember Me. Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:

“In this Young Adult supernatural murder-mystery, Shari Cooper (Bassinger) is dead. Like, fell from the top of a high-rise to the street below, dead. And one of her friends is her killer.

“Now she has to solve her own murder from beyond the grave, before the relentless, soul-sucking Shadow that’s stalking her gets to her first.”

Mila Rayne (Darby and the Dead), Phoebe Lyons (Watch Me Burn), Matthew Vey (Summertide) and Kealeboga Masango (Genesis) will also star in Tubi’s supernatural thriller.

“Tubi has become a destination for Young Adult audiences seeking relatable stories, compelling themes and character-driven storytelling brought to life by dynamic talent like Brec and Charlie,” Tubi’s Chief Content Officer Adam Lewinson said in a statement. “Christopher Pike’s Remember Me became a rite of passage for a generation — a twisty, supernatural thriller that readers never forgot — and we’re excited to reimagine it for today’s audience.”

Christopher Pike’s Remember Me was originally published in 1989. That novel spawned two sequels: Remember Me 2: The Return in 1994 and Remember Me 3: The Last Story in 1995.

Donald Brumfield Jr., Claudia Jordan (Sharknado 5: Global Swarming), Wesley Jonathan (“What I Like About You”), Garret Davis, Cisco Reyes, and Lisa Ann Loggins round out the cast.

Stokes produces via his Footage Films.

R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead 2 will premiere on Tubi in October 2026!

Once again directed by Jem Garrard (Slay), “R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead 2 centers on Evan, a student dealing with bullies who finds a forbidden spellbook that revives the ancient curse for his town of Redhaven. This leads the pumpkin-headed children of previous sacrifices to emerge from the earth in hopes of claiming the town during its Harvest Festival. Perhaps the only hope for Redhaven is the return of a witch who is dead set on destroying the book.”

“Few storytellers have shaped the horror genre for young audiences as profoundly as R.L. Stine, and his work continues to find new life with each generation,” says Tubi chief content officer Adam Lewinson. “Given the breakout success of Pumpkinhead, we’re going deeper into this mythology and continuing our commitment to fans of young adult horror.”

R.L. Stine (Goosebumps, Fear Street) said in a statement of his own, “Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween without a good story about kids being trapped inside a pumpkin. I’m so happy that we are going to have another pumpkin head adventure on Tubi.”

A feature adaptation of the same-titled episode from the television series “R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour,” R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead premiered October 17, 2025 only on Tubi.

In the first film, teenager Sam’s family move to Redhaven is made worse when his brother Finn disappears — and no one else remembers that he existed. Sam joins friend Becka and eccentric Rusty in the race to find Finn and break a harvest curse before Halloween ends.

Joe Lipsett wrote in his review for Bloody Disgusting, “R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead is a solid gateway film for pre-teens. It’s clearly aimed at a younger audience for whom a daytime chase by a Scarecrow through an empty field is equal parts scary and exciting. With that said, everyone is apt to be affected by the horrifying spectacle of the screaming titular character, which looks amazing. Add to this two delightful animated sequences and a finale that employs a spell, a ticking clock, and a surprisingly dark coda, and it all feels appropriately R.L. Stine. For those who love The Haunted Hour and Goosebumps, this is perfect seasonal fare.”

Now, the big question on everyone’s mind is, will everything announced be available on March 1? Well, the simple answer is no, seeing as how these new additions will be coming in waves. Don’t fret, though, because that spacing gives you plenty of time to catch up without being overwhelmed, as well as allows us to curate some notable recommendations.

So, be sure to keep an eye out for these ten animated series coming to Tubi.

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo

Mystery Inc. has gone through a number of changes throughout the years, especially with the cast. While Scoobs and Shaggy are always included, Fred, Daphne, and Velma were less guaranteed to show up in a new show. This was the case with The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo (1985), a delightful approach to the format and characters. Sure, Fred and Velma sat this one out, but Daphne is along for the ride as Scooby and Shaggy, along with Vincent Van Ghoul (voiced by Vincent Price), hunt down some bona fide ghosts. Oh, and the contentious Scrappy-Doo is here, too, before he was essentially booted from the entire Scooby-Doo universe. Even in the belated follow-up movie, Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost (2019), Scrappy is retconned out of the TV storyline.

Beetlejuice

People of a certain age can surely remember this animated reimagining of Tim Burton’s 1988 cult movie. Here in this version of Beetlejuice (1989–1991), Beetlejuice and Lydia are now good pals who routinely get themselves into misadventures down in the Neitherworld. The cartoon doesn’t get anywhere as dark as the movies did, but as compensation, the series is energetic and well-acted.

A Pup Named Scooby-Doo

When it felt like the Scooby-Doo franchise was on its last legs and just unable to capture the energy of its heyday, the Scooby Gang got a drastic makeover. As was the trend at the time, the characters were turned into kids; Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne and Velma were now preteens who solved weird cases in between classes. What also helped make A Pup Named Scooby-Doo (1988–1991) stand out from the original cartoon is the presence of the supernatural. There were definitely humans getting unmasked here, but don’t be surprised to see a legit ghost or two.

Tiny Toon Adventures

Before anyone asks why Tiny Toon Adventures (1990–1992, 1994–1995) is being brought up here, they should consider everything this show had to offer during its brief but memorable run. On top of all the wonderful satire within, the writers behind Tiny Toon Adventures, including Paul Dini, clearly enjoyed a variety of genres. Horror-inspired episodes such as “The Horror of Slumber Party Mountain” and segments like “Duck in the Dark” and “Boo Ha Ha” are all proof of this. Then there is the glorious “Night Ghoulery” special that parodies Rod Serling’s anthology show, Night Gallery. So, if you somehow don’t want to watch the whole series, then at least check out those aforesaid stories. Maybe they’ll change your mind about that binge-watch.

The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest

The original Jonny Quest was the result of Hanna-Barbera delving into more action-oriented fare back in the ’60s. Then in the ’90s, the show was revamped for a then-modern audience (complete with the least timeless CG animation). More or less, The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (1996–1997) still followed three bold kids who solved mysteries across the globe, but this update proved to be a headache behind the scenes. The second and final season saw big changes, making it something of a soft reboot. Overall, this new cartoon occasionally delved into the paranormal and eerie, with ghosts and cryptids as some of the more out-there cases that Jonny and his fellow adventurers investigated.

Courage the Cowardly Dog

One of the more anticipated Cartoon Network titles heading for Tubi is Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999–2002). This show was a masterclass in inducing anxiety and experimenting with the animation medium. On top of its monster-of-the-week format, this series took a lot of creative risks that paid off. Ultimately, Courage proved it was more than just a mere cartoon about a scaredy dog.

The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy

The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy (2003–2007) originated as a segment in Grim & Evil, along with Evil Con Carne (which is also coming to Tubi, by the way). Once it was spun off into its own series, Billy & Mandy became a stone-cold classic among Cartoon Network originals. Deeply funny and macabre, this series shaped plenty of folks’ sense of humor. And all things considered, it has aged well and is worth revisiting.

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated

The most unique offering of Scooby-Doo was lightning in a bottle. Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated (2008–2010) is impossible to describe in a single sentence, as it was really quite convoluted and nothing like prior (or even future) incarnations. It wasn’t the first to have a continuous storyline, of course, but keeping up with all the threads in this show was all part of its appeal. That and its homages and references to everything from obscure Toho kaijū movies to Twin Peaks. Since this series’ ending, the Scooby-Doo line has greatly dialed itself back in subsequent entries. But as Bloody Disgusting’s Wes Lara said in a spotlight about this one-of-a-kind cartoon, Mystery Incorporated is always “a reminder of what the franchise is truly capable of.”

Supernatural: The Anime Series

Turning American IP into anime is not unheard of, but out of all the conversions in existence, Supernatural: The Anime Series (2011) has to be the most random. That popular, live-action saga of two hunky brothers hunting down monsters, demons and other otherworldly evils was given the 2-D treatment (courtesy of Madhouse) while the original series was still airing. However, with the anime only lasting twenty-two episodes (versus the flagship show’s 300+ episodes), its story coverage was limited. Even so, fans of the older Supernatural seasons might enjoy seeing the familiar plots through a different lens.

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo

There will be no apologies about the amount of Scooby on this list. After all, it’s an expansive franchise with more than enough variation to keep everyone happy. For those wanting a fresh new look, Be Cool, Scooby-Doo (2015–2018) is an easy choice. The admittedly offbeat art style won’t be loved by all, but the fast pace and humor should both make up for that.

New to Tubi March Horror Films

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2021)

• Premise: Six people unwillingly find themselves locked in another series of escape rooms, slowly uncovering what they have in common to survive. Joining forces with two of the original survivors, they soon discover they’ve all played the game before.
• Why Watch It? Last month, I recommended folks watch the original Adam Robitel title, so why not check out the sequel this month? In tried and true sophomore fashion, the second film deepens the mythology while bringing back the surviving characters, including Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, and  Deborah Ann Woll (possibly due to fan outcry?). Throw in new characters such as Pose‘s Indya Moore, Teen Wolf‘s Holland Roden, and genre fave Tyler Labine, and you’ve got a fun group of folks trying to survive horribly convoluted murder traps.  Admittedly, the theatrical cut is nowhere near as interesting as the Extended Cut, which features James Frain and Orphan‘s Isabelle Fuhrman in a subplot that would have made a fantastic third film, but sadly, no one supported Tournament of Champions after the pandemic!
• Streaming: March 1

Fallen (1998)

• Premise: Homicide detective John Hobbes witnesses the execution of serial killer Edgar Reese. Soon after the execution, the killings start again, and they are very similar to Reese’s style.
• Why Watch It? This is one of those titles that folks probably haven’t seen in decades, but may remember with fondness. The premise is so enticing – a body hopping serial killer? Yes, please! – and there’s at least one great sequence in which Reese jumps from stranger to stranger down a crowded street that is soooo good. Plus: Fallen is one of the rare genre titles that star Denzel Washington has done (see also: The Bone Collector), which makes it a perfect fit if you were delinquent about watching Black horror back in February.
• Streaming: March 1

The Hole In The Ground (2019)

• Premise: A single mother living in the Irish countryside with her son begins to suspect he may not be her son at all, and fears his increasingly disturbing behavior is linked to a mysterious sinkhole in the forest behind their house.
• Why Watch It? Writer/director Lee Cronin became a household name when he took over the reins of the Necronomicon for 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, but fans of international horror were already aware of his talents thanks to this slow burn Irish film. The narrative is pretty familiar – a mother begins to suspect that her son is an imposter who has emerged from a large sinkhole – but The Hole in the Ground is all about the unsettling tension and moody atmosphere. It’s a nice contrast to the high octane thrills of Rise, and the focus on threatening children should pair nicely with Cronin’s forthcoming The Mummy reboot, which drops in April.
• Streaming: March 1

I Saw The TV Glow (2024)

• Premise: A teenager just trying to make it through life in the suburbs is introduced by a classmate to a mysterious late-night TV show.
• Why Watch It? Two years ago, trans, non-binary filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun‘s second feature film proved to be something of a revelation. An expert mediation on the nostalgic allure of 90s genre television, as well as a careful, beautiful, and evocative dissection of body dysmorphia and emerging trans identity, the film has two pitch perfect lead performances in Justice Smith and Jack Haven (in their break-out role). Plus, it’s a great time to revisit the text that catapulted Schoenbrun into the mainstream because they have a new summer camp slasher, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, debuting in August.
• Streaming: March 1

The Monster Squad (1987)

• Premise:A group of 12-year-olds form a Universal Monsters fan club called Monster Squad and attempt to save their hometown from Count Dracula and his fellow monsters when they show up for real.
• Why Watch It? Shane Black and Fred Dekker‘s film is a beloved classic for a good reason: it’s such a delight! That’s the main reason to watch this ode to Universal monster movies and childhood love of (gateway) horror, but in light of star Tom Noonan‘s recent passing, the timing feels even more correct.
• Streaming: March 1

Possessor (2020)

• Premise: An agent works for a secretive organization that uses brain-implant technology to inhabit other people’s bodies – ultimately driving them to commit assassinations for high-paying clients.
• Why Watch It? Aside from the fact that it is Brandon Cronenberg‘s best film and a masterclass in chameleonic acting by star Andrea Riseborough, Possessor is a really gorgeous film. David Cronenberg’s son spent the eight-year gap between his debut feature Antiviral and this sophomore outing working with frequent cinematographer Karim Hussain on the visual aesthetic of the film. Their hard work is evident in every frame, from the sumptuously gorgeous opening murder sequence through to the trippy consciousness transferring scenes.
• Streaming: March 9

Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse (2015)

• Premise: Three scouts, on the eve of their last camp-out, discover the true meaning of friendship when they attempt to save their town from a zombie outbreak.
• Why Watch It? Yes, I’m recommending two titles featuring actor Logan Miller in it this month (see: Escape Room: Tournament of Champions above), but this under seen horror comedy merits more attention. An early (and under appreciated) film from future Happy Death Day, Freaky, and Drop writer/director Chris Landon, the movie likely underperformed back in 2015 due to zombie exhaustion, as well as unfavourable comparisons to other horny boy-centric coming of age texts like American Pie and Superbad. Still, at 93 minutes, this slight and silly horror comedy goes down relatively easy.
• Streaming: March 1

Soft & Quiet (2022)

• Premise: Playing out in real time, an elementary school teacher organizes a mixer of like-minded women. An encounter with a woman from her past, however, leads to a volatile chain of events.
• Why Watch It? This is an admittedly psychotic recommendation, but make no mistake: Soft & Quiet is one of the most disturbing horror films of 2022. Audiences should be mindful of the content warning for racism, because this extremely uncomfortable and confronting dissection of contemporary racial politics in the US is triggering. Still, writer/director Beth de Araújo‘s feature film debut is undeniably effective at what it sets out to do. Don’t expect the auteur to settle into convention either; her latest film Josephine – about a child who witnesses a sexual assault – just earned raves out of Sundance, winning the Grand Jury Prize.
• Streaming: March 1

• Premise: When long-buried family secrets come to light, two Detroit mothers must confront a shared past to save their daughters from danger.

Deadline reports that the initiative will provide writers with the opportunity to submit horror script with the intention for Tubi to produce and distribute the selected project. The Black List will executive produce and collaborate closely with Tubi throughout the program.

Writers can submit their entries beginning March 1. Submissions close on June 30, after which a committee of Tubi content executives will review the scripts and announce the winner in October.

Any emerging and established writers over the age of 18 are welcome to participate, but all submissions must be in English. Any script that is hosted on The Black List and has received at least one evaluation is eligible for submission, and writers are also welcome to upload new projects for consideration.

Tubi will be providing fee waivers for one evaluation for participation in the program to 100 writers, along with one month of hosting.

“At Tubi, we’re committed to championing and expanding the boundaries of genre storytelling,” said Tubi Chief Content Officer Adam Lewinson. “Horror is one of the most-watched genres on Tubi, offering a vast creative playground with a deeply passionate fanbase that continues to grow. With our ongoing partnership with The Black List, we look forward to finding a standout script that speaks to horror fans who know and love this genre.”

“We’ve seen again and again that when a smart, character-driven horror script meets the right partners, the results can be seismic,” added Black List founder Franklin Leonard. “Extending our work with Tubi into a dedicated horror initiative feels like the natural next step in our partnership. I’m excited for Tubi’s audience to discover a film that began the way so many of the industry’s favorite projects do, as a script on the Black List website.”

Tubi and The Black List previously partnered on the To Be Commissioned initiative, which focused on discovering, developing, and producing five original films from up-and-coming, underrepresented writers.

Jhayla Mosley directs from a script she co-wrote with Regine Coney.

Elizabeth Foxx, Sydni Janeé, Kayla Von, Deborah Lane Spencer, Amerrah Garrison, and Jezar Riches star.

“Everything just felt like authentic and pure filmmaking,” said Mosley. “This was an all-woman led ensemble. I thought it would be too much, but we took the challenges with grace and got it done.”

New to Tubi February Horror Films

All Souls (2023)

• Premise: A young confidential informant is sent on a dangerous undercover operation. It’s a no-holds-barred look at the vulnerable foot soldiers of the War on Drugs, young criminals who are pressured to work for the police.
• Why Watch It? This one is all about the curiosity factor. It’s definitely a crime thriller with genre elements, but (more importantly) it’s one of the first films released since Mikey Madison‘s Oscar win for Anora. For most films, that means that some enterprising individual was sitting on the movie, waiting for <anyone> in the cast to get famous enough to make a buck. All Souls is so under the radar that it doesn’t even have a Rotten Tomatoes score, but the visuals look slick, it’s an “all in one night” narrative, and Madison is always great. Why not try it?
• Streaming: February 1

A Ghost Story (2017)

• Premise: In this singular exploration of legacy, love, loss, and the enormity of existence, a recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to try to reconnect with his bereft wife.
• Why Watch It? As we prepare for a new David Lowery film this year (the psychosexual thriller Mother Mary), why not revisit his notorious A24 effort, A Ghost Story? The first of two Rooney Mara titles in this month’s column, the writer/director’s meditation on love and loss infamously gained traction for its “pie eating” sequence, but if you’re looking for a pared down drama-meets-genre flick, this one is a curious oddity.
• Streaming: February 1

Dark Harvest (2023)

• Premise: In a small Midwestern town, a deadly annual ritual unfolds when the mythical nightmare, Sawtooth Jack, rises from the cornfields and challenges the town’s teenage boys in a bloody battle of survival.
• Why Watch It? On Halloween 2023, director David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night) returned with this adaptation of a cult horror YA novel about a dustbowl town that sacrifices its 17 year old boys to a pumpkin headed creature in exchange for plentiful crops. It’s a (Stephen King) tale as old as time, but Slade’s gloriously inky black visuals, the 60s greaser period setting, and the superb violence (the blood looks great!) makes this under seen film a must watch. Nearly everyone slept on it, so why not rectify that now that it’s free?
• Streaming: February 1

Escape Room (2019)

• Premise: Six strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive.
• Why Watch It? Queer director Adam Robitel‘s franchise starter proves that there’s still plenty of juice in the PG-13 rating. Admittedly yes, this is a film that’s more interested in crafting ridiculously complicated rooms than it is for fleshing out its characters, but Taylor Russell is a confident lead who has good (friend) chemistry with Logan Miller. Does the film do Daredevil actress Deborah Ann Woll dirty? Absolutely! But don’t worry, that gets rectified in the obligatory sequel.
• Streaming: February 1

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

• Premise: Journalist Mikael Blomkvist is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for 40 years by hacker Lisbeth Salander.
• Why Watch It? With a new TV series in the works, why not revisit David Fincher’s criminally under rated English language remake? Rooney Mara is astounding as Salander and she has uncomfortably hot chemistry with Daniel Craig, whose sweater collection in this chilly winter film is enviable. Truthfully, though: it’s hard to shake a “what could have been” feeling with this film because as the first entry of a possible trilogy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has a ton of potential. Blame the film’s Christmas release strategy, which failed to pay off, despite a very cheeky marketing campaign.
• Streaming: February 1

In Fabric (2018)

• Premise: In Fabric is a haunting ghost story set against the backdrop of a busy winter sales period in a department store and follows the life of a cursed dress as it passes from person to person, with devastating consequences.
• Why Watch It? If A Ghost Story is too nebulous a genre entry for you, then hop over to writer/director Peter Strickland’s sumptuous anthology. Frequently billed as “the killer dress” movie, In Fabric boasts a great turn by celebrated actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste in what basically amounts to an adult-Goosebumps tale. Yes, the film as a whole is a little uneven, but this sometimes silly/sometimes creepy/always gorgeous film is definitely worth a look.
• Streaming: February 1

Killer Joe (2011)

• Premise: When a debt puts a young man’s life in danger, he turns to putting a hit out on his evil mother in order to collect the insurance.
• Why Watch It? The NC-17 film is one of director William Friedkin‘s final films and the Southern Gothic film boasts a screenplay from Tracey Letts (the pair previously collaborated on another challenging, but amazing film: 2006’s Bug). Killer Joe isn’t an easy watch, but the pedigree in front of the camera is just as strong as the behind the scenes talent. Check out this cast: Matthew McConaughey in the title role, plus Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon, and Thomas Haden Church. Alas the film was a commercial disappointment, grossing only $4.6M on a budget of $8.3M.
• Streaming: February 1

Secret Window (2004)

• Premise: A successful writer in the midst of a painful divorce is stalked at his remote lake house by a would-be scribe who accuses him of plagiarism.
• Why Watch It? The appetite for twist endings was waning by 2004 (blame M. Night burnout) but there was still a small level of enthusiasm for this title, which stars Johnny Depp (firmly entrenched in his floppy hair era). Based on the Stephen King novella of (nearly) the same name, this David Koepp-written and directed thriller also stars Mario Bello in the obligatory wife role. It’s a solid, albeit unspectacular entry in King’s adaptation canon, but folks have seemingly reappraised the film over the last two decades.
• Streaming: February 1

Slayers (2022)

• Premise: A group of superstar influencers are drawn to a reclusive billionaire’s mansion only to find themselves trapped in the lair of an evil vampire. The only way out is to be saved by a famous online gamer and an old school vampire hunter.
• Why Watch It? There’s a dearth of horror comedies on the list this month, which is one of the main reasons to check this K. Asher Levin flick. If the logline sounds a little too elevator pitch-y, you’d be correct (the film holds a less than flattering 22% on Rotten Tomatoes) but the cast is decent. We’re talking recognizable stars like Thomas Jane and Malin Akerman, so even if the tone doesn’t work for you, at least the people will be pretty.
• Streaming: February 1

Tusk (2014)

• Premise: A brash and arrogant podcaster gets more than he bargained for when he travels to Canada to interview a mysterious recluse…who has a rather disturbing fondness for walruses.
• Why Watch It? Kevin Smith’s humour isn’t for everyone and to suggest that this bizarre little oddity is polarizing would be an understatement. For those who like it, however, the whackadoodle premise, plus Justin Long and Michael Parks’s 100% committed performances, makes this one of the most fascinating “How Did This Get Made” titles of the 2010s. New viewers be warned: prepare yourselves for Johnny Depp’s insufferable “French Canadian” Guy Lapointe character, which is a whole other kind of horror.
• Streaming: February 1

Drew Sidora (Step Up, “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”) stars in a dual role alongside Jensen Atwood, Chrissy Stokes, Ken Lawson, and Cynthia Moten star.

Chris Stokes (You Got Served) writes and directs in addition to producing via his Footage Films alongside Marques Houston.

Stokes is reteaming with Tubi for Stepfather starring Taye Diggs and Tamar Braxton, due out later this year.

A family curse intersects with a young woman’s quest to uncover her heritage in director Réi (Talas)’s new Tubi supernatural thriller, Death Name.

Written by Regina Kim, the film follows College student Sophie Park (Amy Keum) who decides to embrace her culture only to awaken a dormant entity intent on hunting the female members of her family line.

Things begin innocuously when Sophie transfers to a larger school with a highly visible Korean Student Association and takes a Korean history elective with Professor Lee (Desirée Mee Jung). It’s clear that Sophie’s family is unconventional (ie, more American than Korean) because she doesn’t speak the language, eat much Korean food, and, most significantly, she doesn’t know her Korean name.

As she learns about Korea’s complicated history with Japan in class, Sophie is also made to answer for her lack of cultural awareness by her combative roommate – Ari (Alice Bang) – who accuses Sophie of treating their culture like a fad to hop on. This prompts Sophie to question her parents, Gabriel (Joseph Lim Kim) and Kelly (Eliza Shin), for information, but she’s routinely blocked by her Grandmother (Vana Kim), who becomes increasingly angry and upset.

Still, things mostly seem to be going Sophie’s way: she meets a cute boy, Jun (Kevin Woo), in the campus bar, and they quickly begin dating; and aside from Ari’s cold shoulder, she’s making friends in the KSA.

In the film, a college student infiltrates a self-help community after her mother becomes entangled with its enigmatic leader. The members gather for a secluded weekend retreat, hoping to confront their deepest fears and reclaim their sense of self. Little do they know that their leader’s unusual methods may be deadly.

Mainframe Pictures (Founders Day) produces Self-Help, which is presented by Bloody Disgusting’s parent company Cineverse (Terrifier 2-3) and WTFilms (V/H/S/Halloween).

Over 20 years after the franchises first collided on the big screen with Alien vs. Predator, the Alien and Predator sagas come together once again in Predator: Badlands.

Predator: Badlands is now available on Digital at home!

This time, Aliens and Predators won’t be battling it out like WWE superstars. Predator: Badlands provides a more subtle link between the two franchises, with Elle Fanning playing a character named Thia who happens to be a Weyland-Yutani android. Thia ends up a hostile alien planet, forced to team up with an unlikely ally: a young Predator named Dek.

Elle Fanning stars alongside Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as Dek.

Dan Trachtenberg (Prey, 10 Cloverfield Lane) is back to direct.

Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”) race against time in Hallow Road, which is now available on VOD at home after releasing in theaters last year.

In the film, “Parents receive a distressing late-night call from their teenage daughter, who has just accidentally hit a pedestrian. They race to get there before anyone else stumbles across the scene. As they head deeper into the night, disturbing revelations threaten to tear the family apart as they soon realize they might not be the only ones driving down Hallow Road.”

Megan McDonnell (“Normal People”) co-stars in Hallow Road, which was directed by Babak Anvari (Under the Shadow, I Came By) and written by William Gillies.

You’ll meet Ben, a family pet turned rabid killer, in Paramount’s Primate from director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night, Welcome to Raccoon City). First, you’ll fall in love with him. Then he’ll tear your heart right out of your chest.

The film is now playing in theaters nationwide. Here’s the plot synopsis for Primate: “A group of friends’ tropical vacation turns into a terrifying, primal tale of horror and survival.”

Johannes Roberts co-wrote the screenplay with Ernest Riera. The horror movie stars Johnny Sequoyah and Oscar®-winning actor Troy Kotsur (CODA) in his first horror role.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “Johannes Roberts’ latest is a lean, mean horror throwback, wearing its influences on its sleeves while managing to inject enough freshness into the familiar concept through slick technical precision and a constant mounting of dread and death. It’s also not without humor. Primate may take its crazed beast with utmost seriousness, but it’s not afraid to get playful with its concept either.”

A young woman yearns to learn more about her Korean heritage, only to discover that her name carries a family curse in Death Name. The Tubi Original is now streaming on Tubi.

Amy Keum (The Kill Room) stars as Korean American college student Sophie Park. When she decides to reclaim her heritage by using her Korean name, Joo Hyun, she is surprised by her grandmother’s immediate protests. Dismissing her grandmother’s warning of a curse as superstition, Joo Hyun focuses on Jun, a handsome and mysterious stranger.

However, telling Jun her Korean name sets off a series of deadly events as Joo Hyun scrambles to undo a generations-long curse to save herself and her family.

Réi, whose Shutter Bird was submitted for Best Live Action Short Film consideration at this year’s Academy Awards, makes his feature directorial debut from a script by Regina Kim.

Scream franchise favorite Hayden Panettiere‘s sleepwalking spirals into a waking nightmare in Sleepwalker. The horror-thriller is now available on VOD outlets at home.

Panettiere stars as Sarah, a grieving artist whose sleepwalking episodes begin to intensify as she’s haunted by terrifying visions, accelerating her descent into darkness.

Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds), Lori Tan Chinn (“Orange Is the New Black”), Laird Lacoste, Corinne Sweeney, Mischa Barton (The Sixth Sense), and Beverly D’Angelo (Vacation) round out the cast of Sleepwalker.

Brandon Auman (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Star Wars: Resistance”) makes his feature directorial debut from his own script, based on his 2024 short film of the same name.

The young adult horror comedy is set to star Siena Agudong (“Resident Evil”), Brec Bassinger (Final Destination: Bloodlines), and Aliyah’s Interlude (“English Teacher”).

Jem Garrard (Slay, R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead) is directing from a script by Suzanne Keilly (Slumber Party Massacre 2021, Leprechaun Returns).

When a group of sorority sisters find themselves trapped with a vengeful killer, party-girl Nora knows that the drunker she gets, the more her tipsy memories start revealing clues about who’s murdering her friends. But she’d better hurry, or her next vodka soda might be her last call.

Agudong plays Nora, a fast-talking party girl written off as the house screw-up, until her sorority sister’s murder reveals she may be the only person capable of solving the crime. Using alcohol to unlock her fractured memories, Nora chases the truth, even if it destroys her.

Bessinger plays Kendall, a flawless legacy queen; she is Sigma Omega Koppa perfection personified. Treating tragedy like a PR crisis, Kendell will bury anything that threatens the sorority’s pristine façade.

Aliyah’s Interlude plays Lexi. Allergic to all things fake, she’s Sigma’s resident truth-teller and her no-nonsense attitude doesn’t have time for Nora’s obsession with solving a murder. That is until Nora’s chaotic theories turn out to actually have some real truth to them.
