The Final Trailer for the franchise’s sixth installment teases an almost Avengers-like approach to the franchise, with all the past demons being unleashed from The Further. This time, they’re pulled into OUR world, and they won’t stop until every human being is dead.

Of course, coming up with visual depictions of otherworldly horror is no easy task, and that’s why I’ve decided to highlight six of the scariest demon designs in horror. After all, a creature feature is only as good as its antagonist, so this is one situation where the uglier the better!

For the purposes of this list, we’ll only be including movie monsters that are explicitly described as being demons from an established religion/folkloric tradition. We’re also only considering the demons’ scare factor – not the overall quality of the movie it came from. That being said, don’t forget to comment below with your own demonic favorites if you think we missed a particularly freaky one.

One more thing – while we won’t be including it on the list since it technically never made it into the movie, I’d also like to give a shout-out to Valak’s tragically unused true form from The Conjuring 2.

With that out of the way, onto the list:

6. Violator – Spawn (1997)

I’ve already written about how this ’90s Blockbuster Bomb is nowhere near as bad as most people say it is, but I’ll never get tired of insisting that John Leguizamo’s Clown/Violator is one of the greatest movie monsters of the ’90s. Not only was this ambitious union of digital and practical effects remarkable for its time, but it’s a genuine miracle that the crew was able to faithfully translate Todd McFarlane’s exaggerated design to the big screen.

While the comic book version of this hellish shapeshifter was already frightening, and I’d argue that the soft-spoken telepath of the HBO adaptation is even scarier, the special effects here really make it feel like Violator is about to leap off the screen and gobble up your entire family.

It’s just too bad that the rest of the film isn’t equally impressive!

5. The Demons – Hellboy (2019)

The 2019 Hellboy reboot may not be a good movie, and it left an especially sour taste in fans’ mouths after the cancellation of Guillermo Del Toro’s final entry in his proposed trilogy, but there’s still plenty of stuff that this ill-advised adaptation gets right. Among this R-rated romp’s good ideas, I’d argue that the film’s demonic antagonists are at the top of the list, especially if you suffer from some form of megalophobia.

While the film only briefly unleashes an assortment of hellish monsters upon the world during the final act, the Eldritch designs and Neil Marshall’s expert direction make these some of the scariest scenes in the entire Hellboy franchise. To be honest, I’d like to see an entire movie about kaiju-sized fallen angels wreaking havoc on modern society.

4. Satan – End of Days (1999)

End of Days is a deeply strange movie. A supernatural action-horror thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as he attempts to thwart the biblical apocalypse, there are moments here that feel like they came out of a parody. Yet, it’s precisely these idiosyncrasies that make the movie so much fun, especially when the filmmakers do their best to make Lucifer himself a formidable opponent for the man who took down both the Predator and the T-1000.

If you ask me, special effects maestro Mark ‘Crash’ McCreery knocked it out of the park with his surreal and undeniably Eldritch design for Satan. Hell, this winged monstrosity appears to have more in common with Cthulhu than anything you’d see in your average exorcism flick, which makes it all the more tragic that the finished film ultimately replaced most of the demon’s practical effects with CGI.

3. The Lipstick-Face Demon – Insidious (2009)

There’s no discussing iconic demon designs without bringing up one of the most popular supernatural antagonists of the past few decades, the Red Face Demon from Insidious. Also known as the Lipstick-Face Demon and The Man with Fire in His Face, he may have only been the main antagonist of that first Insidious film, but this memorable villain has since become the mascot of the entire series as well as proof that familiar iconography can still be scary if presented properly.

That being said, it’s Joseph Bishara’s consistently freaky performance that makes Red Face such a haunting character, with his exaggerated movements and facial expressions helping to bring the design to life. Of course, I’m of the opinion that the demon’s affinity for Tiny Tim songs might just be the scariest thing about him!

2. The Mimic – The Mortuary Assistant (2026)

The live-action adaptation of Brian Clarke’s The Mortuary Assistant may not be quite as scary as its source material, but you’ve got to hand it to the filmmakers for recreating the game’s paranormal antagonists so faithfully – especially since they weren’t exactly working with a Hollywood budget.

Sure, the team benefited from the fact that the most popular of these demonic entities, the grinning Mimic, boasts a relatively simple design consisting of a pale, emaciated body and a doll-like face with uncanny proportions. But I love how they added a corpse-like texture to its skin. Mark Steger’s eerie performance also enhances the effects work and helps to make this one of the most memorable monsters on the list.

My only real gripe with this design is that they gave the Mimic a nose, removing some of the charm of that original design.

1. Porcelain Jesus – Belzebuth (2017)

Emilio Portes’ Belzebuth is a criminally underrated religious horror flick, so it stands to reason that it also features one of the scariest demons on this list. I know I’m technically bending the rules here, as the creature that appears in the film isn’t really the demon itself but a statue that was possessed and corrupted by it, but I believe this blasphemous design speaks for itself.

Over the course of the film, the demonic antagonist possesses a series of unfortunate victims before eventually settling on a porcelain recreation of Jesus, with the ensuing monstrosity chasing our lead characters during the flick’s scariest sequence. As with any piece of religious horror, your fright-mileage may vary depending on your respect for holy iconography, but I’m of the opinion that this design is scary enough to transcend religious barriers.

New to Tubi July Horror Films

Deep Blue Sea (1999)

• Premise: Searching for a cure to Alzheimer’s disease, a group of scientists on an isolated research facility become the prey as a trio of intelligent sharks fight back.
• Why Watch It? Let’s be frank: Director Renny Harlin has made some absolute dogs in the last few years (the less said about The Strangers trilogy the better, though this year’s Deep Water was actually ok). Deep Blue Sea remains one of the Finnish director’s best contemporary efforts, though. Between the great cast (Samuel L. Jackson, Saffron Burrows, Stellan Skarsgård, Michael Rapaport, LL Cool J, Thomas Jane, and Jane’s sleeveless wetsuit), the ridiculous premise, and that damn/dumb song (“My hat is like a shark’s fin”), you basically can’t go wrong with Deep Blue Sea. It’s one of two great shark films gliding onto Tubi this month, so why not stay out of the water and watch this instead?
• Streaming: July 1

Exorcist II: Heretic (1977)

• Premise: Reagan (Linda Blair), a girl once possessed by a demon, finds that it still lurks within her. Meanwhile, Father Lamont (Richard Burton) investigates the death of the priest who performed her exorcism.
• Why Watch It? August sees the release of documentary Boorman and the Devil, which is about the troubled production of this sequel. The notoriety surrounding Heretic has undoubtedly kept plenty of horror fans away from the sequel, but this truly is a “seeing is believing” kind of film. Real talk: it’s undeniably a disaster, but the John Boorman film has also become a minor cult film. Don’t you want to see it to make up your own mind? 
• Streaming: July 1

Hostel: Part III (2011)

• Premise: Four men attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas fall prey to the Elite Hunting Club, who are hosting a gruesome game show of torture.
• Why Watch It? What does Hostel look like without Eli Roth? Part III kinda answers the question. Technically Roth is still a writer, but he hands over the directorial reins to Scott Spiegel (best known for acting in Evil Dead films). The result is a film with a terrible pedigree; it’s also the first (and last) entry to skip theatres before the franchise was permanently shelved (until that TV show with Paul Giamatti shows up?). For some horror fans, however, there’s something exciting about a bad low-budget sequel. Just bear in mind that the Hostel: Part III‘s biggest star is Kip Pardue…so adjust your expectations accordingly before hitting play.
• Streaming: July 1

Insidious 1-3 (2010/2013/2015)

• Premise: A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.
• Why Watch It? It’s hard to believe that the sixth (!) Insidious movie is coming out in a month and a half, but James Wan and Leigh Whannell‘s other horror franchise has been steadily chugging along for sixteen years. It’s a shame that Tubi doesn’t have all five films available to watch, but in terms of quality, you can do far worse than the original trio. The first film is iconic, and the second is basically an extended coda (with some admittedly problematic stuff going on). I’ll go to bat for Whannell’s 2015 directorial debut, though: there’s a few banger sequences in that film that people slept on.
• Streaming: July 1

Man Finds Tape (2025)

• Premise: After finding mysterious video clips, siblings investigate the strange recordings and uncover a disturbing secret spreading through their Texas town.
• Why Watch It? Writer/directors Paul Gandersman and Peter S. Hall‘s well-received found footage film did an extensive tour of the festival circuit, so now is a great time to check out one of the most contemporary titles debuting on Tubi this month. Surely a title that hails from producers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Spring and The Endless) is worth a free look?
• Streaming: July 2

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)

• Premise: A depressed musician Adam (Tom Hiddleston) reunites with his lover Eve (Tilda Swinton). However, their romance, which has already endured several centuries, is disrupted by the arrival of her uncontrollable younger sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska).
• Why Watch It? This beautiful, melancholy vampire film is courtesy of writer/director Jim Jarmusch, who doesn’t often dabble in genre fare. As always, some will quibble if this artsy drama qualifies as horror, but the existential ennui of an eternal life certainly qualifies (bonus: there’s also something inherently sexy about watching Hiddleston and Swinton just lay about). Plus: if Leviticus has you hankering for more Wasikowska, this is an under the radar pick.
• Streaming: July 1

The Shallows (2016)

• Premise:A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy (Blake Lively) is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills.
• Why Watch It? What better time to watch a shark movie than July? The temperatures are soaring and the idea of escaping into the water is so tantalizing. This tight, contained thriller features a great performance by Lively (and that damn seagull!), but it’s the direction from genre fave Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan; the House of Wax remake) that keeps the movie clicking along like clockwork. At 86 minutes, this is a perfect summer flick.
• Streaming: July 1

Vacancy (2007)

• Premise: Stranded in an isolated motel, a couple (Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale) become the unsuspecting subjects of a snuff film.
• Why Watch It? I’m not going to pretend that this Nimród Antal-directed home invasion film is high art, but it is a good time. You’ll likely wish there were deeper characterizations for Wilson and Beckinsale’s David and Amy in Mark L. Smith‘s screenplay, but this mid-aughts thriller is tense, exciting, and just the right amount of grimy. Plus: another short runtime, clocking in at an expeditious 85 minutes!
• Streaming: July 1

• Premise: When a mysterious stranger moves in next door to Robert and Tabitha, boundaries are tested, loyalty is questioned, and danger comes for all.

Luckily for fans, the latest addition to this decade-and-a-half-long saga is shaping up to be one of the best – at least if the first trailer for Insidious: Out of the Further is to be believed. That’s why we’re taking a closer look at this spooky little teaser and point out five things we learned from the trailer, as Jacob Chase’s sequel appears to have a lot more up its sleeve than most fans realize.

For the purposes of this list, we’ll be limiting our analysis to the trailer itself, though I think it’s also worth pointing out that The Last Key’s Key Demon shows up on the film’s official poster (or at least his hands do) – a sure sign that the best part of that film will also make an appearance in this demonic blast from the past.

With that out of the way, onto the list!

5. Why It Was Originally Called “The Bleeding World”

Out of the Further is by no means a bad title, with the film appearing to do exactly what it says on the tin, but I have to be honest and express my disappointment with the fact that the studio chose to discard the original and much more badass name of “Insidious: The Bleeding World.”

Funnily enough, the new trailer actually appears to explain the original title by setting up the fact that Amelia Eve’s Gemma has the power to permanently bring entities back from “The Further” (the astral plane inhabited by spirits and demons) into real life, an ability that instantly makes her a target for our ghostly antagonists. This means that the hellish dimension is literally bleeding into our world as spirits attempt to use Gemma to escape their exile – hence the discarded title!

4. There Will Be More Liminal Horror in The Further

Between the Exit 8 adaptation and the upcoming Backrooms film, liminal horror is all the rage these days. However, the Insidious series was a pioneer of sorts when it comes to popularizing the concept of warped versions of familiar spaces. While plenty of different filmmakers have added their own spin to The Further over the years, there’s still plenty of paranormal ground to cover in the future.

That’s why it’s great to see Chase expand the concept with the seemingly infinite pillow fort that we see in the trailer, as this liminal nightmare feels like a nod to horror stories like House of Leaves (or maybe even the less serious Dave Made a Maze) while also serving as a freaky example of how the main character’s powers allow her to bring elements of The Further into the real world.

This brief clip also contains the teaser’s best scare, though I have a feeling that the full chase scene will be a lot creepier.

3. There’s a Focus on Dental Horror

While it’s mostly due to trauma from a single bad experience rather than an archetypal fear of the concept itself, I’ve always been terrified of dentists. That’s why it bothers me that so few horror movies take advantage of the inherent horrors of odontological malpractice. Out of the Further appears to be an exception, however, with the trailer teasing us with plenty of dental imagery that borders on body horror.

From the blink-and-you ’ll-miss-it introduction of a new dentist demon to a mouth POV shot harkening back to Little Shop of Horrors (and the fact that Gemma appears to be a dentist herself), I think it’s safe to say that my fellow dentophobes and I are in for a nightmarish experience this Summer.

2. We’ll See Plenty of Returning Villains

The Red Door may have featured the long-awaited return of the Lambert family and the iconic Lipstick Demon (also known as the “Red-Faced Demon”), but Out of the Further appears to be going the extra mile by bringing back most of the series’ previously established spirits and demons for one big supernatural crossover event.

From the Man Who Can’t Breathe to the aforementioned Lipstick Demon (and even a chilling shot involving a shotgun-wielding Doll Girl), the trailer promises that the latest sequel will be a treat for long-time fans. Judging by the flick’s IMDB page, I’m also suspecting that the filmmakers are attempting to keep some of the best cameos/returning characters a surprise for when the movie actually comes out later this year.

1. New Ghosts, Too!

It’s cool enough that Chase is revisiting our favorite entities from the franchise’s past, but you can’t build a good horror film out of spooky nostalgia alone. That’s why we’re excited to see a host of new and eerie faces haunting the screen in this brief teaser.

From the ghosts lurking in the dentist’s office to that nightmarish crowd shot filled with dark figures standing in the middle of an ill-lit street, there are plenty of brand-new entities here that appear to be expanding the series’ mythology in new and interesting ways. In fact, if these brief snippets of footage are to be believed, we’ll be getting ghosts from several different backgrounds and time periods, making the ensuing chaos as they bleed into our world even more fascinating to watch.

If one were to name some of the biggest horror movies of the past two decades, it’s not uncommon for titles like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Get Out, The Invisible Man, and The Purge to dominate the conversation. These movies, while quite different, all share one thing in common that they’re Blumhouse pictures. Blumhouse has had its finger on the pulse of horror for nearly two decades, the likes of which have been beautifully compiled in Horror’s New Wave: 15 Years of Blumhouse by Blumhouse and Dave Schilling.

Horror’s New Wave is a fantastic celebration and examination of Blumhouse’s first 15 years and over 20 standout films. However, it’s also a beautiful deconstruction of horror trends from the past two decades, how Blumhouse became such an arbiter of talent in the area, and why they’ll continue to revitalize the genre over the next 15 years.

It’d be very easy for Horror’s New Wave to be a glossy coffee table book that looks great to mainstream audiences, but leaves devoted horror fans who scour online communities and production notices cold and wanting more. Fortunately, there is genuine knowledge to gain that becomes a deeper examination of the horror genre’s perseverance and evolution instead of just a checklist through Blumhouse’s many hits (and misses). I’m someone who is deeply tapped into the horror industry and takes pleasure in learning about the smallest of production details, yet there were still things about these movies that I was learning for the first time. The info here isn’t just superfluous aggregations of what you’ve seen before. These are highly concentrated knowledge nuggets that are geared to surprise and delight the most devoted of Blumhouse fans and horror aficionados. 

After a charming foreword by Jason Blum himself, Horror’s New Wave segues into an assortment of playful Top 10 lists that span the Blumhouse filmography, copious interviews with directors, screenwriters, actors, producers, and talent that make this a powerful first-hand account of these movies, rather than an outsider’s assessment of the filmography. Literally every person who you’d want to hear from on these projects is assembled here, from Ethan Hawke to Octavia Spencer to James Wan to Jordan Peele. Horror’s New Wave tells a powerful story between Blumhouse’s humble origins with Paranormal Activity, to taking over iconic franchises like Halloween and The Exorcist. Blumhouse understands the value in pioneering its own franchises, like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge, while also establishing relationships with some of the top names in the horror genre, such as Scott Derrickson, M. Night Shyamalan, Leigh Whannell, and Mike Flanagan

Horror’s New Wave includes a brilliant anecdote regarding how Jason Blum “tricked” the studio to purchase and distribute Paranormal Activity through the ruse of a remake that he knew would never come to pass. It’s a great story that’s emblematic of the gumption behind Blum’s innovative producing style. It’s also just a happy coincidence that Blumhouse’s first film happened to be a record-breaking, genre-busting success. Blumhouse has reached the point where it’s tackled a successful video game adaptation that has a sequel on the way, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and a remake of a classic Universal Monster, The Wolfman. In many ways it feels like Blumhouse has ended at the opposite end of the spectrum, starting with ultra low-budget indie found footage movies to flashy IP grabs, yet both of these films – and everything in between – beautifully represents Blumhouse’s creative ethos.

There’s just a single page on Blumhouse’s illustrious non-horror efforts, such as The Normal Heart, BlacKkKlansman, and Whiplash. It’s understandable that these titles that progressively became off-brand for Blumhouse wouldn’t be spotlighted in a book that needs to be selective in its choices that are most representative of the production company. However, it still would have been nice to get a little more information on this side of Blumhouse’s story.

Each of the 19 entries in Horror’s New Wave features a cheat sheet breakdown of the film’s stats like release date, cast, budget, and box office. There’s also a more playful Death Stats breakdown that includes details like the number of jump scares, a kill count, and other interesting oddities, before moving into a plot synopsis, introduction, and focused breakdowns of relevant elements, such as the found-footage genre in the case of Paranormal Activity or dystopia films for The Purge. The rest of each entry is made up of behind-the-scenes documents and interviews with the people involved with the film who unpack various aspects of the movie, like its development, the killer, the kills, casting, and any especially haunting setpieces. It’s an effective way to chew through each Blumhouse entry in a manner that feels substantial, but without being indulgent; economical without being rushed (although plenty of these movies could be broken down to much greater detail and it feels as if Horror’s New Wave just scratches the surface of their legacy). 

This structure works well enough and celebrates each film’s identity and individuality, without ever feeling rote or contrived. There’s enough variety between films that Horror’s New Wave never feels like a repetitive endeavor. The content is as entertaining and shocking as the films that are under discussion. As fun as it is to get unfettered access into huge Blumhouse hits like Sinister and The Invisible Man, it’s also a blast to get 20 pages on more incidental titles like Truth or Dare. The book doesn’t discriminate when it comes to its Blumhouse breakdown and each entry is creatively explored, even if the end product didn’t manage to change the genre. 

Horror’s New Wave has a lot to offer when it comes to its production documents and original goodies. This includes storyboards, the Myers House blueprint from Halloween, and Mike Flanagan’s insistence on filming Oujia: Origin of Evil with period-accurate equipment in order to capture the same cinematic feeling as The Exorcist from 1973. Other production gems detail a gonzo meta New Nightmare-esque sequel pitch for Truth or Dare, the studio’s freaked out reactions upon seeing Split’s surprise ending, Happy Death Day’s first life as an abandoned Rogue Pictures script that Christopher Landon was brought on to rewrite, and the original ending to Halloween Ends that Jamie Lee Curtis pushed back against. 

This all contributes to an impressive tone that’s informative and celebratory, but also humble and earnest enough that it never feels masturbatory and like a hollow tool that’s designed to push Blumhouse product. Horror’s New Wave may subscribe to corporate synergy, but this is a book that’s filled with passion from people who are behind the camera, in front of the camera, and just genuinely love horror and the craft of cinema. That’s abundantly clear on every page of this glowing compendium that has more reverence for blood, guts, murderers, and monsters than the Necronomicon.

Horror’s New Wave: 15 Years of Blumhouse is an insightful deep dive into one of the horror genre’s greatest modern disruptors. It’s a gold mine of first-hand knowledge that’s strengthened through sleek packaging and immaculate layout and design elements that are simultaneously polished and gritty. It makes for an impressive item even without any of the horror industry gems that are contained inside. There are cherished stories and anecdotes that seasoned horror fans have likely heard before, yet the inclusion of rewarding never-before-seen production documents makes sure that it doesn’t just repurpose old materials. It’s a satisfying read and the perfect companion piece as horror fans work their way through the Blumhouse filmography this Halloween.

Located in Estes Park, Colorado, the Stanley Hotel is the inspiration behind Stephen King’s classic horror novel The Shining, and the sold-out inaugural Overnightmare event delivered a unique, immersive, horror-filled experience that took full advantage of the iconic horror setting. The event began well before arrival: choosing your horror adventure.

Attendees had to sign waivers for participation, choose from a list of activities, and, more importantly, choose which fear experience to endure, each one themed to one of four Blumhouse films—Insidious, The Purge, Freaky, and Happy Death Day. Insidious promises the most intense scares for those seeking maximum thrills, like yours truly, while Happy Death Day lets the easily intimidated in on the Halloween fun as the least scary option. It was a no brainer, at least for this horror fan, to opt for the most thrills and chills this Halloween season.

Upon arrival, guests were greeted by the “conci-scare-ge,” Avery. Or rather, one of several. Multiple Averys wandered the Lodge foyer, eager to help the guests and answer whatever questions they may have. One very kind yet creepy Avery showed me to my room on the second floor, across the hall from the closed-off third floor that had been converted for multiple themed experiences. As for my room itself, it was decorated right out of Insidious, with a metronome on the dresser and an active baby monitor on the nightstand. Child drawings of the Lipstick Demon adorned the walls. Books on demonology and astral projection accompanied my itinerary and instructions for the stay.

A welcome dinner at the Lodge’s Brunch & Co, complete with a themed Overnightmare menu, gave scenic views of the area and the spooky ambiance while an Avery gave a rousing performance that not only set the stage for the immersive interactions that would come but set expectations on how the event would go. The biggest and most important rule was simple: pay attention to your schedule and be in your room fifteen minutes before your scheduled fear experience to hang the designated “Please Do Disturb” sign on the door. This sign signaled you were ready and available to be “dragged” from your room…to your potential doom.

On the first night, every guest would undergo the Freaky experience. At my designated time, post-dinner, a teen knocked on my room door, looking for Freaky’s MIA heroine, Millie Kessler (played by Kathryn Newton in the film). She asked me to accompany her to the raging party where Millie’s suspected to be, but also because this is a horror movie and there’s safety in numbers. We were met by another friend, who used the film’s trademark dance to verify our identities before heading into the party proper. Let’s just say that the body-swapping climax of Freaky played out amidst an impressive neon and blacklight party setting that required guests to recall those dance steps at least twice more before it was safe to head back downstairs to resume the festivities.

The final event of the evening was a screening of Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil in the Concert Hall, a place with no shortage of ghost stories of its own. 

Day two began with brunch at Brunch & Co, where you could choose among a plethora of tasty options like the “Mrs. Grady,” a sweet and savory take on chicken and waffles, or the “Room 217,” a custard soaked biscuit covered in honey marscapone, raspberry jam, lemon curd, and a “redrum” gastrique. It was every bit as delicious as it sounds.

The second, fuller day is where the selected activities come into play. I chose the Shining Tour, where a tour guide took our group to various places in the Stanley while telling its history with Stephen King. Suffice it to say that King’s stay at the Stanley Hotel in the ’70s, the fated trip that inspired his novel, didn’t just change the course of his life but the historic hotel’s too. King’s presence is felt everywhere, from the darker color that he deemed necessary for filming the 1997 Shining miniseries right down to the detailed Caretaker’s Cottage that was restored in 2022 and recreates the iconic bathroom in Kubrick’s adaptation. Our guide covered everything from the hotel’s history to King’s part in it and even the history of ghosts that linger in the Stanley’s hallowed halls. 

The second activity selected took me to the Vault on the bottom floor of the Stanley. This experience gives guests a private, curated tasting from the rare collection of The Stanley’s other spirits (pun intended) that also explores a little whiskey history, classifications, and the best way to enjoy it. Our wonderful guide and his pup Ollie pulled out some of the rarer spirits in the Vault, including the Shining collaboration with Jack Daniels and a preserved bottle of Hannisville Pure Rye Whiskey that was bottled in 1927.

Dinner on night two took place at the Cascades Restaurant, with another Overnightmare-themed menu that included tasty options like Whiskey Peach Glazed Duck or a Rocky Mountain Grilled Flight that let guests try elk, venison, and bison. As for downtime between events and activities, Peacock’s “Teacup“ hospitality suite lets guests get cozy along the fire with snacks and beverages- hydration is crucial at high altitudes. The Blumhouse bar next door to the suite lets guests sample the new Blumhouse game, Fear the Spotlight, and peruse screen-used props from Blumhouse horror films while partaking in themed cocktails. And if that’s still not enough, Peacock’s expansive Halloween horror library was available in each guest’s room. 

Guests could also watch the first two episodes of “Teacup“ in the Concert Hall, the perfect wait for my fear experience finale: Insidious. Shortly after midnight, back in my room, the baby monitor erupted in eerie sounds of screaming, harsh whispers, and a baby crying. It stayed active right until an Avery came to collect me; I was told I’d been summoned to room 1310 upstairs.

Avery walked me to the end of a long, dark corridor with only a few red lights lighting the way. This Avery gave explicit instructions to walk the long hallway and knock precisely three times on the door. It slowly, eerily creaked open once I did, where I was greeted by scare actors resembling Elise and Tucker, who were gathered around a small table with Elise’s gas mask and recorder in the darkly lit room. I was instructed to say aloud everything that Tucker was writing down on his notepad as Elise searched the Further for signs of the missing boy who’d ventured too far there. With the room getting intense and activity picking up, Elise sent me into the Further- an extremely foggy room next door cast in a deep red glow. The only thing I could see was a baby crib, and behind it was where the Lipstick Demon emerged, creeping closer and closer until Elise pulled me back. Her camera began to flicker, creating a strobe effect that left the room pitch-black. The perfect setup for both the Lipstick Demon and a Further ghost to land their effective jump scare moment.

Elise yanked open the door and ordered me to run. Just outside was Avery, waiting to see me back to my room. It was here where she confessed that no one had been in the room at all; she found my summons on a hand-written note. To add to the ambiance, the metronome on my room’s dressed went off, as if to greet me when I returned.

It was the showstopper finale of an impressive, fulfilling Halloween event. Peacock and Blumhouse pulled out all the stops with an impressively produced immersive experience that lets guests tailor the fun to their own interests and comfort levels. The scenic Stanley Hotel and its grounds provide a rich backdrop of horror before the event even begins, and Overnightmare incorporates that history at every step. The food is fantastic, and the production value for each immersive experience is incredible; it really feels like you’re stepping into a Blumhouse movie. 

But it might be the scare actors and the Avery conci-scare-ges that steal the show. The more you pay attention to them, the more you notice backstories and hierarchies emerge that further immerse you in this cozy little horror space. Overnightmare makes great use of a historic location intertwined with horror history, a perfect backdrop to induce contemporary Blumhouse and Peacock inspired frights. If they transform this into an annual event, and hopefully they do, it has the making to quickly become a requisite Halloween destination event.

Director James Wan’s original Insidious movie in 2011 was followed by Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), Insidious: The Last Key (2018), and last year’s Insidious: The Red Door, which became the highest grossing movie in the entire franchise thus far.

Amityville II: The Possession – Starz

The first direct sequel to 1979’s The Amityville Horror isn’t actually a sequel but a prequel exploring the gruesome murders that took place in the iconic haunted home before the Lutz family. Halloween III: Season of the Witch screenwriter Tommy Lee Wallace and director Damiano Damiani aim for shock value and a sleazy, discomforting atmosphere with the introduction of the Montelli family (fictional adaptations of the DeFeo family). An abusive dad creates turbulence before the horror kicks in, but once it does, expect incest and supernatural shenanigans that culminate into a wild, practical effects-driven finale.  

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning – Plex, The Roku Channel, Tubi, Vudu

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning takes the ancestors of the Fitzgerald sisters to the settling days of Canada, where they’re forced to take refuge in Fort Bailey, a place consistently under siege by werewolves. The 1815 setting lends a Gothic tone to a plot that largely adheres to the same beats as the original, with some significant shifts in the back half. This prequel forgoes any comic relief or witty commentary on adolescence in favor of a higher body count, more werewolf mayhem, and expanded werewolf lore.

Insidious: Chapter 3 – Max

Writer/Director Leigh Whannell’s directorial feature debut occurs before the first two Insidious films, putting psychic Elise (Lin Shaye) in the lead. Set several years before Elise meets the Lambert family, teen Quinn (Stefanie Scott) seeks her out to contact the spirit of her deceased mother. Quinn quickly finds herself in danger, subjected to terrifying encounters with a malevolent entity, and only Elise can help her. Chapter 3 goes darker and harder on the scares. The Further may not play as prominent a role, but if you want something that’ll send shivers down your spine, Whannell more than succeeds with this one.

Pearl – Paramount+, Showtime

Ti West rewinds the clock much further than X’s ‘70s setting to pay tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood in this prequel. Mia Goth reprises her role as the repressed killer Pearl, this time exploring a much different, younger side. Pearl makes for a vastly different viewing experience thanks to its drastic shifts in style, tone, and cinematic influences, but with enough connective tissue to enrich its predecessor. West and Goth play by their rules here, stylistically and narratively. West uses his cinematic influences to create something unique and audacious, and Goth cuts loose with an unrestrained performance.

Prometheus – Hulu

Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel follows an ill-fated crew as they travel to the distant moon LV-223 in the hopes of discovering humanity’s origins. Instead, they awaken humanity’s greatest threat. Noomi Rapace leads the all-star cast in this bonkers sci-fi horror movie that sees scientists paying the ultimate price for their mistakes. While this prequel does give an early iteration of the iconic xenomorph, it’s the introduction of Michael Fassbender’s inquisitive android character, David, that makes this one worth the watch. That another entry in the franchise is on the way this summer makes now a good time to catch up, even if the films won’t overlap in narrative.

The decision to pivot backwards and refocus on the Lambert family was a smart one, with audiences flocking to the theater to finally see a direct continuation of the first two Insidious movies. Wilson, who also pulled triple duty singing with Ghost for end credit track “Stay”, spoke with Bloody Disgusting about the scare-crafting on the fifth Insidious entry. 

The Red Door‘s jump scares play with sound, often removing the music cues signaling an impending scare altogether and shaking up the familiar pattern. When asked about his approach to crafting scares, Wilson got candid. “I wanted different types of scares and I’ll be honest, some didn’t work out as well as I wanted, usually because of time,” Wilson explains.

He continues, “That’s usually how it happens. And James [Wan] would be the first to tell you that, and Leigh [Whannell] would say the same thing, I’m sure. It’s why the MRI sequence worked so well. One, it was an amazing idea that Leigh had, but we got all day to shoot it. I guarantee you, if I had to shoot that in production, they would’ve given me four hours, and I wouldn’t have been able to do it. It would’ve been fine. It just wouldn’t have been that. All you want is time, and unfortunately, with this schedule, even though Blumhouse was awesome with supporting me, just by the nature of scheduling, certain scares would get pushed to the end of the day, or some variable would happen. We only have one of those doors that he’s got to burst through, and you’re like, ‘What?’ Little things like that that you’re constantly asked to compromise, so scares become different. I didn’t want to overpromise and under-deliver. Some scares are, on a 1 to 10, they’re just a 5, and that’s okay. There’s a couple in there that you just want to remind people of the kind of movie [they’re watching].”

Wilson also sought to make this entry wholly his own, trusting his instincts when creating spooky set pieces. He tells us, “There were some that I fought for, even to the chagrin of my buddies, who were like, ‘Dude, this should not be in the daytime; it should be at night.’ I said, ‘No, I really want it during the day.’ And, ‘Okay, I’m not sure it’s going to work.’ A lot of that. I respect everyone’s opinion, but I always felt like just let it be something different. Maybe it’s not going to be the greatest scare in the world, but it’s going to be this movie. It’s going to be specific. I’m talking specifically about the townhouse scare, I call it, when I’m flipping pictures. I mean, it’s weird. It’s a totally weird scene. But I wanted that.” 

Demonstrating just how much of a horror fan he is, Wilson also cites a John Carpenter cult gem as a source of inspiration for the daytime scare that sees an unwitting Josh Lambert put up and take down photos from a window, unaware that he’s being watched.

“I was thinking of In the Mouth of Madness; it struck me when they’re sitting there in the diner, and you see the guy with the ax across the street, and he walks right towards the window, and you think, ‘Oh, that’s scary.’ Then he busts through the window, and they shoot him, and it’s like, ‘What is happening?’ I wanted that feeling. I did. I was inspired by a lot of just different types of scares, and that’s where the expertise of Leigh and James would come in,” Wilson tells Bloody Disgusting.

He continues, “Leigh, actually, some of his help was tremendous. Because when he was on set and came into the sound mix, he said, on one scene, I had music in there, and he would go, ‘You ever try it without it?’ I said, ‘Without anything?’ He goes, ‘Take it all out.’ And it was just great. It was great because he said, ‘Let the audience be the soundtrack.’ I said, ‘Dude, I’m stealing that. That’s the greatest response ever.’ It’s so true though, isn’t it?”

It wasn’t just scares that Wilson wanted to make his own in Insidious: The Red Door; the actor/director also dramatically shifted the story from its original concept. Wilson details how this sequel evolved from a superhero tale into a sentimental swan song for the Lambert family.

“I mean, to be honest with you, when I took the original concept from Leigh, which is Dalton going to college, different demons, no lipstick demon, none of that. Josh was in it a little, but not much. No Rose, no family. It’s just Dalton, almost like a Peter Parker story. It followed more of a superhero breakdown. And it didn’t feel that engaged to me. As a director, I couldn’t see my way in,” Wilson reveals. “I said, ‘If I do this, you guys don’t have to do this with me. I’m really not pitching myself. I’m just stating facts. If I do this movie, I’m going to get Rose. I want the kids back. I want Ty as Dalton, and I want it to be a father-son relationship. I want to unpack everything from the end of two. I want it to be the Lambert trilogy. That’s what I want.’

“The little sequence where I go knock on the door from the second movie, and it cuts to the first movie, and you’re like, ‘Oh, that’s a cool device.’ I wanted to take that to a much more emotional low for Dalton, to confront the most traumatic experience that his family went through. Sifting through all that footage to create that laundry room basement scene, I wanted just to ground it emotionally. That was my saving grace, as I never felt like I was filling someone’s shoes because I felt like the story was so personal that I felt like even James and Leigh, if they had the script, they would direct it totally differently. Let me just do my thing.

“Love it or leave it. This is what it is. It’s me.”

For the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Wilson about his directorial debut, where Wilson recounted the entire story behind “Stay.” The director candidly broke down how he covertly pulled it together and the inspiration behind it.

“It happened behind most people’s backs. I’ll tell you that. Of course, if it’s a big hit, they’ll all take credit for it,” Wilson jokes. “No. I knew I wanted a song, a really cool song. I had this wild hair about Dokken singing ‘Dream Warriors’ in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3. I knew that won’t work because people will ask, ‘What is this? This has nothing to do with the movie.’ Lyrically, it’s pretty sound, but I didn’t want it to seem like a joke, even though I love that tune. But I long for that kind of song at the end of a movie. I’m a big Ghost fan. Blumhouse had worked with Ghost on ‘Hunter’s Moon’ for Halloween Kills. Right?

“That was always in the back of my mind, but I didn’t know if I wanted to ask them again. I wanted to do something different. I knew it needed to be different. But I knew I would not have a lot of time or money, to be quite honest with you. I became friends with Tim Bickford, who’s at their label, and he and I just on our own would sit and throw around ideas and certain songs like, ‘Hey, you know Tobias [Forge] has got five new tracks, that he is going to start releasing these covers.’ And they were awesome. ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero.’ That’s cool, but I can’t say ‘Thunderdome’ in my ‘Insidious’ movie.”

Then I said, ‘Look, I don’t know if we can do this, but thank you for trying. These are the themes of the movie.’ I went through everything because they hadn’t seen the movie. I said, ‘This is stuff I want to deal with if I could find a song.’ Then, literally within two weeks, he was like, ‘This may be the track. It’s already done, so you don’t even have to pay for it to be done.’ Because I said, ‘And my dream is to sing on the track,’ because I think it would be one, probably not since John Carpenter and singing Big Trouble Little China. I don’t know if a director has sung on their own track on their own album or their own movie. So, he sent me the track, and the lyrics blew me away. Then he said, ‘Tobias would really be down for you doing the first two verses, and then he comes in like, basically, the devil’s presence.’ I thought, ‘This is incredible.’ It’s like Josh Lambert singing it in a weird way. Oh, this is going to be great.

“Then they just set it up, and literally, there was an email chain that was, ‘What is the end credit’s song?’ Then a bunch of people write back, ‘Oh, there’s nothing. We’ll find it.’ I replied, ‘No, no. I’m recording a song with Ghost,’ and I get this influx and people from Blumhouse. They’re like, ‘What?’ I was like, ‘I’m done asking for stuff. We’re just going to do it.’ So, we just went and did it. Luckily, Dan Malsch is the engineer on maybe a couple of their albums. He worked with Avenged Sevenfold, a bunch of bands that I love. He’s like an hour away from me. I went to the Poconos, talked to Tobias on the way, and was like, ‘This is what I’m thinking of doing. I’d like to wail at the end a little bit and do something different.’ He said, ‘Go for it.’ And they loved it. Here we are.”

Flashback scenes from Chapter Two catch unfamiliar audiences up to speed; after young Dalton (Ty Simpkins) helps dad Josh (Patrick Wilson) escape the Further and return home, the family decides to suppress their memories. The idea, of course, is to prevent future astral projecting into the Further, closing the door on pervading entities hoping to cross into the real world. Harboring secrets of this magnitude hasn’t been kind to the Lambert family, but a death reopens old wounds as Dalton heads off to college. Old secrets refuse to stay buried, and the door to the Further busts wide open. Father and son must reckon with their past if they have any hope for a future.

Written by Scott Teems and based on a story by Leigh Whannell, The Red Door evolves the Lambert family in an organic, affecting way. Its central thesis hinges on the erosion of family bonds when memories of this scale get suppressed. What happens when some family members, like Renai Lambert (Rose Byrne), must carry the burden of such secrets? Wilson ensures that repurposed footage from Chapter Two presents a clear picture of Josh’s possession and subsequent attempts to kill his family so The Red Door can mine that trauma through the estranged bond between Josh and Dalton. Both separately find themselves on a paranormal journey of self-discovery.

The Red Door is at its most interesting when following Dalton’s explorations of college life as his reawakening connection to the Further pervades. Now a young adult, Dalton’s typical exploration with self-identity out from under his dad’s shadow comes, and college navigation brings terrifying visions vision it. Some stem from his forgotten past, while others bring current nightmares from the Further. Dalton’s newly forged friendship with roommate Chris (Sinclair Daniel) breathes life into this more somber feature most of all. Daniel’s lively, more assertive personality brings levity when necessary and helps flesh out Dalton beyond his reserved, aloof artist persona. Conversely, Josh’s past offers little more than a few scares and drawn out questions.

Director Patrick Wilson’s emphasis on family, specifically Josh and Dalton, means the denizens of the Further don’t factor as strongly into the story. Or rather, don’t expect any expansion of lore here. Familiar faces do get brought into the fold, but this is firmly the Lamberts’ story. Wilson does make this franchise entry his own in tone, style, and scares. On the latter, how Wilson toys with sound and tension-building lend unpredictable quality to the scares that render them effectual. But the reliance on Chapter Two footage and a lack of development on the mythology leaves the horror aspect of this story on the underwhelming side.

That it’s so intrinsically tied to Insidious: Chapter Two, complete with Chapter Two footage flashbacks, makes it more inaccessible to franchise newcomers than previous entries. Those hoping to learn more about the Lipstick Demon (Joseph Bishara) and the darkest corners of the Further may come away disappointed. The Red Door isn’t interested in the mythology but instead in examining how its ghosts fractured the family and whether their enduring love can make them whole again. Wilson reminds audiences why they fell for the Lambert family in the first place with a sentimental sequel that tenderly bids them farewell. While it doesn’t give a sense of finality to the Further or its ghostly inhabitants, it does offer poignant closure to the protagonists that started it all.

What’s an Insidious movie without the tough-as-nails Elise, after all?

Especially as the horror franchise returns to the Lambert family in Insidious: The Red Door, directed by and starring Patrick Wilson. Family secrets will be revealed as the Lamberts return to The Further again, encountering demons from the past and brand new terrors.

In the film, “To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before.”

The original cast from Insidious is back with Patrick Wilson (also making his directorial debut), Ty Simpkins, Rose Byrne, Andrew Astor, and, of course,Lin Shaye.

Ahead of the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Shaye about her franchise legacy as Elise. The actor revealed what working with Wilson as this entry’s director was like and what Elise Rainer taught her about acting.

Shaye left an indelible impression on audiences in the original film as the small-statured but powerful psychic that aided the Lambert family when Dalton got trapped in the Further. Even when her character met her demise in the closing moments of Insidious, Shaye became the central protagonist in subsequent prequels Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key.

Because Insidious: The Red Door focuses on the Lamberts, expect to see only a little of Elise this round.

Shaye explains, “Patrick actually did call me when he knew he was going to direct the film and also the script; he was very much involved with the formation of the story. He did say as a disclaimer that Elise wouldn’t have a big part in the movie. I don’t care about the size of a part, to be honest. I never have. I feel some of my best work has been very small parts. So, it doesn’t matter how many lines I have or how many words I have. It’s really about how the character fits into the story. I just knew that her presence was going to be in the film. I was very happy to feel that Patrick was really aligned with me about whatever Elise was going to be in this movie; that was what she would be conveying. The fact that she’s such a good listener and she lets in negativity, she’s also learned how to protect herself sometimes, and sometimes she can’t. So there’s a vulnerability to her that’s always there. Those are all very important aspects of the character to me. But the fact she’s a good listener, she’s a giver, and she takes nothing. She doesn’t take. If you recognize, she’s not a taker, and most of us are. So there’s something special about her being that people are attracted to.“

The tenured actor previously shared the screen with Wilson in Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2. The latest entry sees Wilson pulling double duty, reprising the role of Josh Lambert while making his directorial feature debut. When asked what it was like to work with Wilson as director, Shaye didn’t hesitate with her answer. 

“His sensitivity,” Shaye explains Wilson’s strength as a director. “He has an actor’s sensitivity and a director’s sense of direction. That’s a good way to put it. He’s very clear and yet very open at the same time. Often, directors, the ones that are the most difficult to work with, are the ones that are not good listeners. Patrick being an actor and being a receiver, as beautiful of an actor as he is, he is really, really gifted. He would open that part of himself, certainly with Josh. The film is fantastic. I have to tell you; I was sitting there like, ‘Okay, let’s see what they’re going to do with number five.’ I was so drawn in between Ty and Patrick, the two of them, and the story is, I think, one of the scariest Insidious films because you were so drawn into the emotionality of the characters and their dilemma as a father and son is a beautiful story. Patrick was, to go back to your question, he was able to switch gears like that [between acting and directing]. When we were doing the one scene, actually the final scene with him, he was giving directions to the sound guy. Then he turned on Josh; it was just magic. It was so impressive, so real, and so heartfelt. He’s really, really a gifted artist. And anything he does, I believe.”

Five films deep, what has Elise Rainer taught Lin Shaye about acting? 

“Oh, she’s taught me about quiet,” Shaye reflects. “I can’t remember which one it was in, but there’s a scene that starts with me sitting. I think it was three. There was something where I was supposed to be having a cup of tea, and the director said, ‘Go and get the tea and you’re nervous so that the teacup is going to shake a little.’ So, don’t ever tell me that. That’s not how I work. I didn’t say that but don’t tell me to make the teacup tremble. Let’s see what I got to do that maybe you’ll make the teacup tremble.

“I remember thinking, ‘I don’t want to be doing anything. I just want to sit down, and I want to sit, and I want to think.’ The whole opening of that scene is it doesn’t go on too long, but it goes on just long enough, so it’s almost uncomfortable. Elise is just sitting quietly. Whatever’s happening is happening on the inside. I just knew it was going to be more powerful. That’s something, even for any character to remember, there are moments of doing nothing, of letting yourself think, letting yourself be—especially young actors, not that this is a coaching session for young actors. But in general, don’t be afraid to be quiet because other things will bloom from there. So I’ve learned a lot from her. I love the franchise, and I love her. And I’m hoping it’s not the end. I hope that there’s more to come.”

Insidious: The Red Door might finally close the door on the Lamberts, but this franchise belongs to Elise in many ways. The good news is that the door is never completely slammed shut in horror, and Lin Shaye has firm ideas of where she’d like to take Elise next.

“Many stories to tell,” Shaye says of her character. “Many, many stories. Some I have imagined, and I have ideas. I’m happy to explore those. There’s so much we don’t know about her. We know her qualities but don’t know what stories those qualities fit into. And The Further, we don’t know what’s in The Further, really. We know there are bad things there. Who knows? There could be good things there. I do have a real idea for a story, which we’ll see if anything ever comes from it. But I love the character, and I love it because there’s a purity and a core to her that’s tough and righteous in the best sense.

“She’s not a goody-goody. Can I say a bad word? She’ll say, ‘Fuck’ with the best of them because she knows what’s right, and she’s not afraid to express herself. She floats on that other plane that gives her, what’s the right word? Gives her the ability and the strength to maneuver herself around others. I love her. I really do. I’ve grown more and more in love with the character as the series has gone by. So I was very honored to be included in this and to contribute to the possibilities of what could still be available for her and the stories for Insidious.”

Deadline reports, “The story here is that of a husband and wife (Nanjiani and Moore) who enlist the help of a spell to travel back in time, such that they can prevent the death of their young daughter. The consequences, of course, prove to be severe.”

The franchise’s first spinoff film comes courtesy of Screen Gems, Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster, and Jeremy Slater (“The Exorcist,” “Moon Knight”) is directing.

Slater also wrote the screenplay for Thread: An Insidious Tale.

Something about that gigantic red INSIDIOUS popping on the screen as the violin violently erupted like an A24 score having a panic attack just stuck with me. It was a very Sam Raimi moment and I was enamored with the whole experience. Though the sequels continue to have diminishing scary time returns, I continue to root for and enjoy this horror franchise.

So, without further (GET IT?!?! Further? I apologize) ado, here are my top five scariest moments from the entire Insidious franchise… while you wait for Insidious: The Red Door!

The Red Demon Jump Scare – Insidious

Normally I would never include a jump scare as the “scariest” scene in a movie but this particular jump scare happens to have nuance. Not to mention it nearly made me shit my pants.

Josh (Patrick Wilson) arrives home after a long day of ignoring his family to do anything other than spend time in that unholy house of horrors and finds his wife Renai (Rose Byrne) has invited a Priest over to bless the house. The Priest departs quickly as he can sense Josh’s what the fuck face and they sit down at the dinner table for an explanation from Josh’s mom Lorraine (Barbara Hershey) as to what she’s been seeing lately.

In this beautifully edited scene she explains to them that she saw a demon in their son Dalton’s room, standing in the corner like a Mortal Kombat character waiting to be chosen. The camera pans back to Josh (now in extreme what the fuck face) and BAM! this rage faced demon is all up in his earhole… and our faces.

I’m not a guy who gets gotten by every jump scare around but this one brought out an audible yelp in the theater the first time I saw it. And again yesterday as a thirty seven year old man in my living room watching it for the seventeenth time. It would probably crack my top five jump scare moments of all time.

Our First Trip Into The Further – Insidious

Josh has Elise (Lin Shaye) hypnotize him and send him into The Further to find his son after a nice soothing talk over tea about how he was haunted his entire childhood before they Men In Blacked his ass to make him forget. In the search for his son, he slips into what I could only describe as a Fog Machine Superstore with extremely high and unhelpful employees.

In all seriousness, this scene is so strange because there are almost no in your face jump-scares or over the top moments. Yet, it is so haunting and memorable because of the way it is filmed. People just don’t move right. They disappear in and out of the moment. Nothing has any actual weight to it yet it’s somehow still extremely threatening. Everyone’s faces are extremely pale as though they are either freshly dead or auditioning for the newest Tim Burton film. A crying lady disappears from the corner and another sitting at a dinner table holding a rifle does the same, only to reappear firing it a family one by one as they sit on the couch frozen with smiles on their faces. It’s pretty much the freakiest version one could have dreamed up for what “The Further” could consist of. Especially when you think about how much time these folks are spending replaying these events in James Wan’s fucked up version of purgatory.

The Church of the Smelly Dead – Insidious: Chapter 2

Specs (Leigh Whannell), Tucker (Angus Sampson) and Lorraine uncover a secret room as the camera switches to found footage style. Tucker immediately starts to inside-the-mouth vomit as though he just saw Puddle of Mudd’s About A Girl acoustic cover for the first time and the camera unveils what looks like a whole shitload of dead bodies. Not any old dead bodies, mind you. Dead bodies sitting upright, covered with dirty white sheets, in a row of what seems to be church pews. It’s no doubt the most disturbing single sight of this movie and maybe the entire franchise.

The movie never shows us what lies beneath the sheets but it’s probably not a young, handsome Harrison Ford. Whatever it is, its enough to send Tucker into the fetal position, once again dry heaving on what one would imagine is a very unclean floor to be rolling around on.

This one is a moment that came just in time for a movie that desperately needed some bite to it. A scene that managed to be surprisingly grotesque without ever really showing anything. A perfect recipe for a PG-13 horror.

The Bedroom Scene – Insidious: Chapter 3

Insidious 3 was a strange film in that it never really landed the blows you wanted it to land. Still, the characters were likeable and it was directed by the supremely talented Leigh Whannell. Dermot Mulroney was great as a grieving father trying to keep his family together, and the film’s lead character Quinn (Stefanie Scott) was easy to root for.

One scene at least bridged the gap…

Quinn is in her bedroom recovering after getting hit by a car when the friend she’s video chatting with asks who is next to her. The computer then freezes. She undoubtedly wonders if her dad remembered to pay the internet bill but realizes quickly that the second scariest thing that could have happened was actually taking place instead. A demon stands in the corner of her room, staring at her. Immobile from her injuries, she just stares in horror as it moves towards her. The demon quickly disappears under her bed.

She, like an idiot – to be fair, an idiot with no other choice – looks over the bed in horror. The demon (in a jump-scare twist) is above her instead and throws her into the floor. A moment that is much more painful to watch than it would typically be when you understand the injuries this poor girl already has. The demon then slowly walks over to her, almost hilariously closing her laptop to create further dark ambiance. He then suddenly appears over her, breathing hot demon breath all over her neck. It’s a pretty intense scene in an otherwise pedestrian horror flick.

Suitcase Surprise! – Insidious: The Last Key

This scene, admittedly, may have eeked its way into the list in my completist desire to include at least one scene from each film. Still yet, it has its merits.

Towards the end of the film, Elise is forced to try and find answers in the most inconvenient way possible: a stack of crusty old suitcases midway down a surely haunted Mario tunnel. We all know what’s coming as Tucker looks on, being useless as hell. Seriously, who just lets the sweet lady crawl down that pipe and is like “Don’t worry, I’ll hold the flashlight! I got you!”?

Elise digs through the suitcases one by one as we wait for some inevitable ooga-booga to jump out at us. The waiting is the hardest part as she gets through seemingly a whole goddam airport’s worth of suitcases before the travel monster finally pops out, grabbing her throat as she screams and we fade to black. It’s a jump scare with no real consequences as we know Elise survives, but a well earned jump scare none the less.

After starring in the first two movies as Josh Lambert, we learned in 2020 that Patrick Wilson is returning to the franchise as the *director* of the upcoming fifth installment.

Patrick Wilson will star in the film alongside the returning Ty Simpkins as Dalton Lambert, with Rose Byrne also returning in this year’s brand new movie as Renai Lambert.

Insidious: The Red Door will pick up with the Lamberts ten years after the last movie.

Don’t coke the bear. The Elizabeth Banks-helmed movie is inspired by true events in Kentucky in 1985, and Jimmy Warden wrote it. Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) produced. Expect things to get violent and hilarious.

The Outwaters – February TBD

Despite a familiar initial setup, there’s nothing conventional about found footage nightmare The Outwaters. Nothing will prepare you for the disturbing journey writer/director Robbie Banfitch has in store, either. Banfitch mercilessly lulls viewers with a soothing intro before ripping open a dark abyss beneath them, flinging them into an immersive pit of visceral madness. Look for this one to arrive in theaters before landing exclusively on SCREAMBOX.

Scream VI – March 10

The survivors of Scream 2022 leave Woodsboro behind, only to discover Ghostface isn’t done with them yet. A Scream set in New York City, with the return of Kirby Reed and so much more? We cannot wait to see what’s next from this beloved slasher franchise.

Sam Raimi has joined forces with A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods for 65, an original sci-fi thriller starring Adam Driver, Ariana Greenblatt, and Chloe Coleman. Driver brings the big guns to what appears to be a suspenseful battle against dinosaurs.

A full-blown Child’s Play documentary that celebrates the entire franchise, directed by Kyra Elise Gardner. Featuring interviews with cast and crew, including genre icons such as Lin Shaye, Alex Vincent, Jennifer Tilly, franchise creator Don Mancini, and more, expect this doc from SCREAMBOX to tug at your heartstrings.

Renfield – April 14

Nicholas Hoult (The Menu) plays Dracula’s (Nicolas Cage) lackey Renfield, who’s long grown tired of his boss. He finds potential redemption in angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina). Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) helms this modern-set horror-comedy.

The Black Demon – April 21

When oilman Paul Sturges (Josh Lucas) takes his family to Bahia Negra, he unwittingly awakens the Black Demon, a massive black shark hellbent on protecting nature from human threats. Time is of the essence in this killer shark feature.

Evil Dead Rise – April 21

Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids alone in a cramped L.A. apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons and thrusting Beth into a battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable. Directed by Lee Cronin, the fifth entry in the franchise was initially deemed for streaming but will now head to theaters.

The Blackening – June 16

Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like A Man, Barbershop) and co-written by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) and Dewayne Perkins (“The Amber Ruffin Show,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first? The Juneteenth-set horror-comedy appropriately releases around Juneteenth.

Insidious 5 – July 7

Patrick Wilson returns to the franchise not only to star but to direct as well. The fifth entry sees Josh Lambert (Wilson) dropping his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) off at college, only to discover Dalton’s past demons haven’t entirely left him. 

Meg 2: The Trench – August 4

Jason Statham will be back as Jonas Taylor in director Ben Wheatley’s (Kill List, Sightseers, A Field in England, High-Rise, Rebecca, In the Earth) upcoming sequel to the 2018 action-horror movie The Meg, along with Cliff Curtis, Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy. Exploring the Mariana Trench should bring the horror.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter – August 11

The latest by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) focuses on a specific chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel, with horror stalwart Javier Botet as Dracula. That Demeter was bumped from its January 2023 release to a cushy summer spot bodes well.

Haunted Mansion – August 11

Justin Simien (Dear White People, Bad Hair) is directing a new live-action movie based on the popular Disney attraction. It follows a mother and her son who come across a mansion that is more than it seems while being orbited by various characters key to undressing the spooky mystery.

They Listen – August 25

The upcoming Blumhouse horror movie They Listen is keeping mum on plot details so far. It stars John Cho (Searching) and Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant), which is enough to pique our curiosity.

The Nun 2 – September 8

Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) helms the sequel that’ll reunite Valak (Bonnie Aarons) and Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga). The pair will battle once more, this time in 1956 France.

Saw 10 – October 27

The tenth entry is poised to bring back franchise favorites, including Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) himself, just in time for Halloween. Franchise stalwart Kevin Greutert, who directed the highly regarded Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter, and edited Saw I through V and Jigsaw, is directing the project.

Ghostbusters 5 – December 20

After successfully relaunching the franchise with 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Sony Pictures continues the Spengler family saga with the film’s writer and exec producer Gil Kenan (Monster House, Poltergeist) taking over as director.

Beau is Afraid – TBD

Formerly titled Disappointment Blvd., the film is described as “an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.” Ari Aster’s latest stars Joaquin Phoenix, Parker Posey, Patti LuPone, and more.

Consecration – TBD

Triangle, Black Death, and The Banishing director Christopher Smith returns to horror with the upcoming supernatural thriller Consecration. Jena Malone and Danny Huston star.

Cuckoo – TBD

Luz director Tilman Singer is back with another horror movie. Plot details remain scarce, but production images suggest a potential slasher. We’re in either way, between Singer and a cast that includes Dan Stevens (The Guest) and Jessica Henwick (Underwater) as well as Hunter Schafer (“Euphoria”), Marton Csókás (Freelance), Greta Fernández (Santo) and Jan Bluthardt (Luz).

Dark Harvest – TBD

Set on Halloween 1963, Norman Partridge’s horror novel Dark Harvest is headed to the big screen with David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night, “Hannibal”) directing. Every fall, teen boys in a small Midwestern town participate in a hunt to catch Sawtooth Jack. While Dark Harvest was initially expected to release last year, but a recent R-rating gives us hope this adaptation will finally see release this Halloween season.

MaXXXine – TBD

The third entry in Ti West’s slasher trilogy that began with X and continued with Pearl “follows Maxine (Mia Goth), after the events of X, as the sole survivor who continues her journey towards fame, setting out to make it as an actress in 1980’s Los Angeles.”

Salem’s Lot – TBD

James Wan is producing the new take on Stephen King’s vampire story Salem’s Lot for Warner Bros. and New Line, with Gary Dauberman (It, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home) attached to write and direct the film. The plot sees an author return to his hometown, only to find it under the sway of a bloodthirsty vampire. After multiple delays and release date shifts, this reimagining will likely finally see release sometime in 2023.

Shelby Oaks – TBD

YouTube critic Chris Stuckmann’s feature debut follows a paranormal investigation that dates back to childhood and will include found footage elements. It stars Camille Sullivan (Hunter Hunter), Brendan Sexton III (Don’t Breathe 2), Michael Beach (If Beale Street Could Talk), Robin Bartlett (Shutter Island), Keith David (The Thing), Charlie Talbert (The Big Short), Emily Bennett (Alone with You) and Sarah Durn (Where the Crawdads Sing). A recent Kickstarter update suggests we can likely expect this one in Fall 2023.

Time Cut – TBD

The writer and director of slasher-comedy Freaky are reuniting for a young adult horror movie titled Time Cut, with Christopher Landon producing and Michael Kennedy writing the script alongside Sono Patel (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). Hannah MacPherson (“Into the Dark”) is directing Time Cut, recently described as “Back to the Future meets Scream.”

After starring in the first two movies as Josh Lambert, we learned in 2020 that Patrick Wilson is returning to the franchise as the *director* of the upcoming fifth installment.

Wilson writes on Instagram, “…lights out on our next installment of the Insidious franchise. Second leg of the journey is done. Now on to post. To my entire cast/crew…THANK YOU…for the drive, the passion, and the hours. And a big thanks to all the partners/spouses/families/friends who dealt with our wacky schedule.”

The film was shot under the working title Fear the Dark, but at this time the fifth installment in the Insidious franchise doesn’t yet have an official title. Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

Patrick Wilson will star in the film alongside the returning Ty Simpkins as Dalton Lambert, with Rose Byrne also returning in next year’s brand new movie as Renai Lambert.

Insidious: Chapter 5 will pick up with the Lamberts ten years after the last movie.

“Josh Lambert (Wilson) heads east to drop his son Dalton (Simpkins) off at an idyllic, ivy-covered university. However, Dalton’s college dream becomes a nightmare when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them both.”

This will be Wilson’s debut as a director. Scott Teems (Halloween Kills) wrote the script based on a story by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man).

“I’m honored and thrilled to be at the helm of the next Insidious installment, which will provide an amazing chance to unpack everything the Lamberts went through a decade ago, as well as deal with the consequences of their choices,” Wilson said in a statement back in 2020. “Directing the movie is both professionally and personally a full circle moment for me, and I am extremely grateful to be entrusted in continuing to tell this frightening and haunting story. Into the further we go…”

The first two Insidious movies were written by Leigh Whannell and directed by James Wan, centered on the Lambert family and their terrifying struggles deep within The Further. The most recent film in franchise, Insidious: The Last Key, was released back in 2018.

Insidious: Chapter 3 – Tubi

Writer/Director Leigh Whannell’s directorial feature debut occurs before the first two Insidious films, putting psychic Elise (Lin Shaye) in the lead. Set several years before Elise meets the Lambert family, teen Quinn (Stefanie Scott) seeks her out to contact the spirit of her deceased mother. Quinn quickly finds herself in danger, subjected to terrifying encounters with a malevolent entity, and only Elise can help her. Chapter 3 goes darker and harder on the scares. The Further may not play as prominent a role, but if you want something that’ll send shivers down your spine, Whannell more than succeeds with this one.

Satan’s Slaves – AMC+, Shudder

A loose remake/prequel of the 1980 Indonesian horror film, writer/director Joko Anwar brings the unrelenting scares. A family in a rural home struggles to survive after mom Mawarni Suwono’s long battle with illness dried up all the royalties from her once-lucrative music career. Her death triggers a series of supernatural occurrences suggesting that perhaps mom made a deal with the devil; and he’s come to collect. The isolated setting, the atmosphere, and the endless barrage of frights make this ghost story a perfect Halloween watch.

Sleep Tight – AMC+, Kanopy, Shudder, Tubi

Jaume Balaguero’s Sleep Tight gets under your skin, especially if you live alone. Luis Tosar is one of horror’s most underrated and scariest villains as apartment concierge Cesar. He’s miserable, and all he wants is for everyone around him to be discontent. He revels in making the tenants’ lives hell, and they’re typically easy to agitate. But the unflappable Clara, with her sunny outlook, becomes the object of Cesar’s fixation in his fervent desire to induce a mental breakdown in her. It means consistently breaking into her apartment – often with her at night, sleeping peacefully in her bed – to find new ways to inflict suffering without her being aware. It’s bleak, disturbing, and one of the most uncomfortable viewing experiences out there.

Shutter – Kanopy, Vudu

Photographer Tun (Ananda Everingham) and his girlfriend Jane (Natthaweeranuch Thongmee) are a happy couple in love. That changes when they open up the doors to supernatural torment when a distracted Jane accidentally runs a woman over while driving home from a friend’s wedding. Tun, who’d been drinking, convinces Jane to flee, leaving the woman alone in the middle of the road. Subsequently, strange images begin showing up in Tun’s photography. The feature debut by Parkpoom Wongpoom and Banjong Pisanthanakun brings stark moments of terror and nightmare imagery that sticks with you. If you love this one, also check out Pisanthanakun’s The Medium on Shudder.

Terrified – AMC+, Shudder

The cinematic equivalent of enjoying a haunted attraction, Demián Rugna’s feature is an onslaught of terror from beginning to end. Plot-wise, there’s not much to it, nor is there a lot of explanation for those that prefer answers. However, that doesn’t stop a cop on the cusp of retirement and a slew of paranormal experts from trying to get to the bottom of a series of bizarre activities plaguing a Buenos Aires neighborhood. With creative and innovative scares aplenty, Terrified is the type of horror film that lives up to its name; it’s freaking petrifying.

With Insidious 5 on the way soon, James Wan has taken a minute to celebrate the 11th birthday of the Insidious franchise, writing up a nice little retrospective over on Facebook.

Wan writes, “After Saw, I wanted to shake the “torture-porn” label and do something less graphic and more atmospheric. Being huge fans of ghost stories and haunted houses, Leigh Whannell and I wanted to do our own version of those films, and felt we could make it for very little money to retain complete creative control. We felt the most important thing the film needed was to be scary, and so we dove into the creepy world of astral projection (a subject matter that fascinates me) and dimension-traveling.

“Initially, Leigh had named the script The Further, but I convinced him that the one-word title Insidious was a “cool sounding word” for a movie about ghostly possession by parasitic entities from another dimension. He agreed.

“Leigh wrote a fantastically efficient script that was scary as well as emotional (this would go on to inspire my approach for The Conjuring), and attracted Jason Blum to the project. It was the first time we collaborated together (along with Oren Peli), and the start of Blumhouse. It was a great experience.

“For such a low budget flick, we were very fortunate to put together a great crew and a terrific cast — the amazing Lin Shaye, Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson (this guy!), Ty Simpkins and Barbara Hershey. We shot the whole movie in 24 days, which is 6 more than Saw! I edited it at home on my home computer (not unlike what I’m doing right now on Aquaman 2 but with a little bit more money) with Final Cut. My assistant editor, Dennis, was set up in the breakfast area, with wires running from his computer pass the kitchen to the computer Kirk and I were working on. It was truly harking back to my student filmmaking days.

“And so here we are 11 years later, our little movie has become a popular horror franchise, and Patrick Wilson is about to travel back into the Further with Insidious 5!

“Long live the Further.”

The post ‘Insidious 5’ – That Trailer Floating Around Is Fake But the Fifth Movie Is Filming This Spring appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

The background scare features imagery, usually a figure, lurking in the background without any telltale music cues or camerawork to announce their presence. Often the camera pans wide, scans the scene, or focuses on a character at the forefront to further blend the imagery into the background. It’s a delicate type of misdirection that sends a deeply unsettling chill down your spine when you realize it’s there, then prompts you to ask yourself how long it’s been there. It’s a trick of the eye visual that leaves you questioning what you saw, further immersing you in terror.

Ari Aster made frequent use of the background scare in Hereditary. The most obvious use of this scare tactic came in the third act, in which Peter (Alex Wolff) wakes in bed and ventures out into the house, unaware his possessed mom, Annie (Toni Collette), hovers above him on the ceiling. Seeing this in theaters demonstrated the scare’s effectiveness. The staggered gasps from the audience as some viewers spotted Annie before others, and some not at all, created a communal feeling of unease. Eventually, the camera made Annie’s presence more noticeable and pulled her from the background for the final confrontation, the scare over.

Aster packed Hereditary full of subtle visual clues and scary moments. Silhouettes of cult followers lurked outside the home as day turned to night, a quick blink and you’ll miss it type of jolt. Images of the dead clung to the shadowed walls of the Graham home. All of which made Aster’s debut so chilling; the background scares were so constant that they gave the haunting a foreboding and unpredictable feel. The Grahams were constantly under surveillance by a sinister presence, but they remained blissfully unaware. And so, too, is the audience if they’re not scanning the background.

Mike Flanagan took the concept and ran with it in The Haunting of Hill House, making a game for eagle-eyed viewers to spot the hidden ghosts within every episode. The hidden ghosts carried over into The Haunting of Bly Manor as well, blending the restless spirits in the backgrounds of their respective spaces both day and night. Again, the characters are never aware that they inhabit the same room as the watchful dead.

That’s the recurring thread connecting background scares and how they’re employed. They signal a voyeuristic quality for the inhuman antagonist; they’re watching the onscreen characters, lying in wait. That they’re relegated to the background lends an almost fourth wall breaking quality, as if they want us to be aware that they’re there without alerting their prey. 

In Insidious, moments before a playful ghost startles Renai (Rose Byrne) while she’s alone during the day, you can glimpse it facing a wall as the camera scans the room. It’s a fleeting image, a child appearing to play hide and seek with an unwitting opponent. It cues the audience to prepare for a scare, heightening the tension as the viewer realizes Renai could potentially be in danger. But if you miss spotting the ghost, director James Wan chases it with a more overt scare that can’t be overlooked.

The first spotting of a Crawler in The Descent happens much earlier than you think if you happen to be paying attention. For this one, director Neil Marshall breaks the rules by guiding your eyes to the vanishing peek at the creature as Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) scans the cave with her flashlight. A skittering sound causes her to pan back with the light; only nothing is there. This moment happens long before the excursion goes awry, and survival becomes daunting. It indicates that the creatures were aware of their intruders straightaway, long before their first confrontation.

Similarly, The Strangers saw its masked villains stalking James (Scott Speedman) and Kristen (Liv Tyler) in their house long before the bloodletting began. While most of their appearances are far more prominent, the effect is the same. The killers’ proximity to their prey, silently watching their every move, heightens the suspense dramatically.

Shudder’s The Medium uses a subtle scare to mark a pivotal turning point in the narrative. Mink (Narilya Gulmongkolpech) rests her head against a vehicle window, and the camera fixates on her sullen face. It’s a quiet, reflective moment following a wave of bizarre paranormal events, the keyword being reflective. Mink’s reflection slowly grins at her, an ominous sign that she’s losing herself to the entity assuming control of her body. It’s a chilling sight if you happen to notice it.

Background scares are effective because they bide their time, quietly daring the viewer to notice them and grapple with the implications. A ghost, demon, or masked murderer lurking in the background, patiently waiting for their moment to strike is inherently unsettling, and the sudden realization that they’re there sticks with you long after the moment passes. It’s that prickly feeling of being observed confirmed in a startling, visual manner. Characters pass through scenes unaware that they’re being watched, and the observant monsters that are lurking in the dark might be watching us, too.

This time around, actor Tom Fitzpatrick joins us to discuss his work as the terrifying Bride in Black in James Wan’s Insidious: Chapter 2 and Leigh Whannell’s Insidious: Chapter 3. During our talk, Mr. Fitzpatrick reveals how he came by the role (previously essayed by actor Philip Friedman in the first Insidious film), provides his thoughts on having portrayed such a frightening figure, and shares with us some fun stories involving the film’s making and marketing.

“I have a very good agent and manager,” Mr. Fitzpatrick begins, noting how he came by the role of Insidious’ Bride in Black. “In this case, it was my manager. She got me the audition, and I went in.

“I read a beautiful scene. It was interesting to me as an actor. It was about a page and a half long, which is kind of unusual. You know, usually you get not much dialogue to read. But it was a beautiful scene. I didn’t know the story. It was some guy in an elevator, talking to a lady, and she was apologizing for her little son being so nosy and upsetting me.” This character was Parker Crane, later revealed to be the Bride in Black.

“And I went off on how I envy the little boy, that he had such a nice life. I went into detail about the nice life the kid had. It ended up with my character saying, ‘I love his little bedroom, the beautiful finger paintings on the wall.’ And that’s kind of the end of the scene. It ends with the mother, with a look on her face like, ‘What the heck? How does that guy know about the finger paintings on my son’s wall?’ She’s mystified.

“That was the end of the scene. I’d presumed it would be in the picture. I don’t know if you remember, but there’s a scene where the mother is in the elevator. The young Barbara Hershey character [Lorraine Lambert, portrayed in flashbacks by House of the Devil star Jocelin Donahue], the mother/nurse, she’s in the elevator with Parker, he’s there in his bathrobe. She kind of apologizes to him in that scene, but he doesn’t say anything. He’s just there. When we hit the first floor, the doors open and Parker just kind of walks out and goes down the hall. Then she says to the charge nurse on the reception desk, ‘Why is Mr. Crane out of bed? He was comatose yesterday. He shouldn’t be wandering around.’ And the charge nurse says, ‘Honey, Mr. Crane died last night. He committed suicide. He jumped out the window.’ I imagine that would have followed the dialogue scene. And I learned that dialogue.”

Unfortunately, Fitzpatrick learned that the scene in question was ultimately cut from the film. “I went to work that first day, all prepared to shoot the dialogue scene, and they said, ‘Oh, we’re not going to do the dialogue scene. You’re just going to stand there. When the elevator doors open, you’re just going to get out and walk down the hospital hallway. So I was disappointed. ‘Damn, my chance to speak on screen!’ So I thought that was kind of interesting, that they read me with that speech which I wound up not doing.

“I think they had prepared the speech for the fellow that played the role in the first Insidious. Back then, the character was called ‘The Old Woman’. She was just in scenes, kind of walking through, suddenly materializing and stuff. She was always in her Black Bride dress, when she frequently carried a candle. So I think they wrote it for him, because the character’s name in the script I got was ‘Philip’, which was said actor’s name. I wound up getting the role, and the role became Parker Crane.

“A couple of weeks later, my manager Eileen calls up. She says, ‘Oh, honey! Honey, you got that part!’ ‘What part?’ ‘That part, that thing that you read for. That Insidious thing, or whatever it is!’ I said, ‘Oh, great!’ Little did I realize that I had gotten into a famous horror franchise and I was going to get two gigs out of it. And a lot of horror conventions, so that was kind of neat.

“I have had a lot of work from the folks at Insidious. I got a lot of work out of it. I did Chapter 2, and then they so kindly put me into Chapter 3. I got a chance to work with Leigh Whannell, who’s a very dear man. God, I loved working with him. You’d never know from seeing him in the pictures, but he’s Australian, with a nice Australian accent. Pretty loud and jovial, actually, and he seemed to like directing on Chapter 3.

“We had a whole studio. They had built the set for practically everything in the studio. Chapter 2, we shot some stuff on location. So Chapter 3, it turns out that Leigh likes to direct from what they call ‘video village’. He likes to be over in the room where he can see the images the camera’s getting. So you’d hear this LOUD AUSTRALIAN VOICE coming from video village, telling you what you needed to do.”

Fitzpatrick notes here that the spooky vibe the Insidious films are known for extended to the filming locations. “The fun thing with shooting Chapter 2, we shot that hospital scene in this really scary abandoned hospital. I guess it got turned into an old age home. It was kind of just sitting there, and people filmed in it. Everybody was scared of filming in it. People were apparently murdered there as patients in the 1950s and incinerated in furnaces down in the basement. Everybody said it was really a creepy building, and I never, ever left the group of people in the waiting area. I wasn’t going to go into any of those halls. I wasn’t going to go in any of those rooms. It was very dark, and dusty, and spooky.

“They had fixed up the room where Parker was lying comatose. They made that look just like it was in 1983, and beautifully painted everything. It was all clean, but around it was just this big, old, vast, crumbling, spooky ass former hospital. So that was kind of fun. That was the first day of work. On that first day, they put me in my costume and did a photo shoot. I didn’t know what the hell was going on. I’m all done up in this costume. They said, ‘Okay, look scary!’ So I looked scary for them.” [That picture] is what I give people when they want to have a picture from me.

“We shot there the hospital. Then, we went Sunday night … I’m not sure the name of the area of town. It borders Hancock Park. It’s a very elegant neighborhood. We were in an old house that was right across the street from the house of Hattie McDaniel. You know who Hattie was?”

This writer admits that he doesn’t.

“Oh shit, you don’t know anything!” Fitzpatrick laughs.

Fair.

“I think she was the first Black person to win an Oscar. She won for playing Mammy in Gone With the Wind. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful actress. She played support in a lot of movies, she played Mammy, and she won the Oscar. So she was quite wealthy.

“We were right across the street from Hattie’s house, so every time we had a break, I would go out and just stand at the front gate and check out Hattie’s house. You couldn’t go in, there was a guard, but it was really nice to be across the street from Hattie. That’s where we shot the scene that I really loved in Insidious 2.”

The sequence in question concerns Parker Crane’s transformation into the Bride in Black. “They wrote it, I think, after they had pretty much the whole picture in the can, and then wanted to explain Parker Crane a little bit more. So they had me come over again, they put makeup on, except for my lipstick and my wig. I was in a wife beater T-Shirt and a pair of funky old man’s boxer shorts. We were in an old mansion. It was very crumbly and very dusty, and also very spooky.”

A big revelation made by Fitzpatrick is that this sequence wasn’t helmed by the film’s acclaimed director. “By then, James Wan had already left. It was interesting, with Mr. Wan. I met him for maybe … I mean, he shook my hand and said, ‘Hi, I’m James,’ and we went to work. He was on set for that scene, which took a couple of hours to set up and shoot – the thing where the little boy comes by the hospital bed. Parker, who’s comatose, sits up and screams, and grabs the little boy and has to be pulled off. Mr. Wan directed that. But then he was gone. There was no more James. He had gone to Europe to shoot Fast and Furious, which I thought was kind of interesting.

“So he was gone, and they ordered up this scene which they wrote. It was just Parker finishing his makeup, putting on his wig, and then putting on the gown. They filmed that whole process. It was directed, I think, by the 1st AD. He was a lovely man to work with. So it was neat. I’m looking in this ratty old mirror, and this decayed old dresser that they gave me.

“I got to put my own lipstick on, which was very funny because the makeup person, Eleanor Sabaduquia, was a brilliant artist. She would spend two hours on my makeup. It was a work of art, and her big vanity – she didn’t really have a vanity – but her big thing was my lipstick. It had to be just right. It had to look like some old fool who wasn’t good at putting on lipstick. It had to go up into the wrinkles around my lips, the way old ladies’ lipstick does when they put on too much. She would paint that mouth for minutes, getting the lipstick to go up into the wrinkles around my mouth.

“And I hated that, ‘cause I wanted it to be glamorous, but I let her do it because they were paying me. But when I got my turn, I put on a beautiful mouth, man. I looked like Joan Crawford! Just a gorgeous mouth. I put the whole costume on, and they filmed the whole thing.

“Then I turned around and picked up an old, beautiful chromium saw that was lying on a table, and I approached a poor young lady who was all trussed up with a bedsheet propped up in the corner. So that was a scene that had not been in the script, and that was kind of wonderful. Then, of course, they explained Parker’s backstory.

“I think they made a lot of that stuff up after they had written the picture. I’m not sure, but felt like it was kind of an addition later. I thought it was so beautifully written. Leigh of course wrote it. In ten minutes, it told the whole story of The Black Bride, this killing machine, who was really a little old man who had been tormented as a child by a horrible mother. So, that was fun.”

Having essayed a terrifying and iconic horror villain, one wonders if Mr. Fitzpatrick is a fan of scary movies. “No, I have to confess I’m not. I don’t know anything about horror movies. There are classic, black-and-white things that I’ve seen. I love Dracula. But I didn’t know anything about horror at all.”

Nevertheless, even for being relatively unfamiliar with the genre, Fitzpatrick notes that he’s come to appreciate those who do love fright films. “Since having played The Bride in Black, I’ve gotten on the horror convention circuit. We would go around and do horror conventions in hotel ballroom on weekends. It’s very sweet. I love horror fans. They are the nicest people. They’re not crazy, and they’re not fixated or anything like that, but it happens to be a genre that they really find stimulating and interesting, and love.

“They’re very intelligent, and baby they are informed. They know every damn horror picture ever made! They would come up to me and say, ‘I loved you in the picture. You reminded me of such-and-such, and such-and-such.’ They would reel off a bunch of other characters from other horror movies, which of course I had never heard of.

“I learned the technique of smiling politely, nodding, and saying, ‘Oh, yeah! Wow, yeah. Wow, yeah that’s right.’ And I’m afraid, my darling, it was false. I didn’t know what the fuck they were talking about. But, you know, give the people their money’s worth.

“But horror fans are lovely people. I love them. I never met one I didn’t like.”

“They were awfully nice to me,” Fitzpatrick notes, discussing the various people behind the Insidious films. “I mean, I did 2, and they wrote the character into 3. She sort of turns up and strangles Lin Shaye, but that’s about the only thing she does in the picture. She’s not really germane to the plot as much as she was in 2, which was really a payoff for Insidious 1. That’s kind of a complete story by itself.

“3, I turn up and I jump out of the dark and I attempt to throttle Lin, but that was about it. But they love me, and they had me back to make a virtual reality thing with Lin. She’s in a chair in a scary room, talking about their story or whatever. Then I turn up as The Bride in Black. They gave me the candle again, but I didn’t have any dialogue. I really just kind of spooked around a little bit and then blew out the candle, which was a mistake because it was a big candle with a lot of melted wax right up and around the flame. When I blew on it, the wax went all down the front of my costume and took a half an hour to clean up. I felt like such a damn fool. But that was really cool.”

Beyond this neat piece of marketing, Fitzpatrick was also on hand to help celebrate on the third film’s big night. “They called and asked me to come and work the red carpet, God bless them. They were going to have a premiere of Insidious Chapter 3 on the red carpet at the Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood, which was a farm boy’s dream come true – which is what I am, a farm boy – to get to do a premiere at the historic Grauman’s Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard.

“They put me in a beautiful room at the hotel. I mean, I was all of a sudden in historic Hollywood, the place that I always wanted to be, in a room being made up. Eleanor Sabaduquia is lovingly doing my perfect makeup again.

“And I go down first to a room full of what they call ‘influencers’. Influencers, for God’s sake! Talk about a modern word. This was a whole bunch of people who, I guess, influence people. I don’t know what the hell. They were all over me like a cheap suit, all the young ladies. They wanted to hug me. They wanted selfies with me. It was like I was like the biggest movie star on the face of the Earth to these sweet people.

“It was marvelous. They’re all there with their martinis, and came into the room, and they explode with excitement. So I did that, got my ego stroked, and then they took me across the street and they turned me loose on the red carpet. I walked it, and everybody applauded! They love the Black Bride character.

“Then I did a couple of television interviews, for the love of Pete. I’m nobody! I’m not anybody, I’m not a star. I’m just this working actor, but they interview me. Of course I’m all in my fabulous makeup.

“Then there was going to be an after party, and they were going to play that Cherry Glazerr cover of ‘Tip Toe Through the Tulips’, which features in 2, I think it is. They wanted me to make an entrance at the after party in fog and a blue spotlight to ‘Tip Toe Through the Tulips’ and mine. They gave me the CD to have overnight so I guess I could learn to walk to it, and I got just this brainstorm. I said, ‘Wouldn’t it be hilarious if I come in and I lip sync to ‘Tip Toe Through the Tulips’? So I asked permission of the folks who were organizing the after party, and I showed them how I would do it. Well, baby, I was a hit in the black light, the blue spotlight and a bunch of horror movie fog. It was very satisfying. After that, all of the people there wanted to hug me, of course, and wanted to have selfies with me. I probably gave like 150 or 200 hugs and selfies that night.

“It was really one of the high points of my forty years here in Hollywood. I never had a better time. So I thought that was kind of sweet.”

Wrapping up our chat, Fitzpatrick looks back on his time as The Bride in Black. “Well, in a short sentence, I never loved anything more. I had a wonderful time. I was still a newbie in a genre that I’m completely unfamiliar with. I was honored to be cast. I loved every minute on set and everybody that I worked with, and I want to do more.

“All actors want to do more, but particularly for Blumhouse, Leigh Whannell and Mr. Wan. And like I said, when I got out on the autograph and collectors convention circuit, I was struck by … what a place it fills in the minds and the hearts of horror fans. It was really wonderful to see how much these people, these fans, love these movies and how important they are to them. What entertainment it gives to them. That’s what we as actors are supposed to do. We’re supposed to give people entertainment, stuff to be excited about and dream about, and I was really glad for the opportunity to do it.

“I don’t think I could’ve started in a better place than with Blumhouse and the Insidious franchise. I mean, I could have been in some piece of schlock, but I wound up in something that is a total class act. So I’m very grateful. That’s a big deal. I’m very grateful for the opportunity and I loved every minute of it, and I hope they have me back!”

On the road to Halloween, Bishara got together with The Section Quartet to perform the Insidious score, and Bloody Disgusting is excited to exclusively debut that footage today.

Bishara explained to us this week, “I had been talking about a live reading of the Insidious score with The Section Quartet, musicians I work with regularly for some time. Later into the pandemic, as the conversation turned to remote recording, this seemed a good way to explore both, and if nothing else a reason to make music together again.”

Joseph also recently released “The Spiderweb Meditations“. Described by Joseph as “music for active or passive listening”, the album is comprised of five darkly flavored and emotionally immersive soundscapes from the mind that bought you the scores to some of the biggest and most successful worldwide franchises.

To celebrate the release of “The Spiderweb Meditations”, Joseph Bishara partnered with Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group to create a series of visual companion pieces to each of the five tracks made by projecting animated photographs of spiderwebs Joseph shot around his house and projecting them on to human canvases. You’ll find those videos below.

Beginning his career as guitarist and keyboardist for the L.A. industrial metal band Drown, Bishara segued to soundtrack work on Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Heavy Metal 2000, and John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars. Since that time, he has scored films including The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle, The Prodigy, The Other Side of the Door, The Curse of La Llorona, Annabelle Comes Home and many others, often appearing onscreen as a creature performer.

Bishara also scored the Trench creature sequence in the recent hit Aquaman.

Bishara’s music production work includes the soundtrack for the cult musical film Repo! The Genetic Opera and its successor The Devil’s Carnival, as well production, programming and remix contributions for artists such as Tech N9ne, Gvllow, Marilyn Manson, Bauhaus, Rasputina, Danzig, Jane’s Addiction, Nine Inch Nails, Megadeth, and Prong. Perhaps best known for his work scoring the horror franchise Insidious, Bishara earned the Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Score on that film. He has since composed the music for its sequels Insidious Chapter 2, Insidious Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key. His upcoming projects include scores for the films The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Malignant, and Shrine.

Insidious: Chapter 5 “will pick up with the Lamberts ten years after the last movie, as Dalton begins college.” Yes, a direct sequel to Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2.

Patrick Wilson will also star alongside the returning Ty Simpkins as Dalton Lambert.

This will be Wilson’s debut as a director. It’s expected sometime in 2022. Scott Teems wrote the script based on a story by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell.

“I’m honored and thrilled to be at the helm of the next Insidious installment, which will provide an amazing chance to unpack everything the Lamberts went through a decade ago, as well as deal with the consequences of their choices,” Wilson said during the ongoing virtual BlumFest. “Directing the movie is both professionally and personally a full circle moment for me, and I am extremely grateful to be entrusted in continuing to tell this frightening and haunting story. Into the further we go…”

The first two Insidious movies were written by Leigh Whannell and directed by James Wan, centered on the Lambert family and their terrifying struggles deep within The Further.

This week’s streaming picks belong to haunted habitations. If you need a chill in the peak summer heat, a familiar comfort watch, or something a little under the radar, these five haunted horror movies offer something for all tastes. As always, they’re all available to stream now.

The Awakening – Kanopy, Shudder

Set in 1921, Rebecca Hall stars as paranormal debunker Florence Cathcart. She accepts an invitation from war vet Robert Mallory (Dominic West) to stay at the boarding school where he teaches, to determine if the place is indeed haunted. The more she encounters strange phenomena, the more her skepticism gets shaken. The realization that the hauntings exist comes with frightening reveals about Florence’s past. The Awakening bears a stronger resemblance to The Devil’s Backbone than The Others, in terms of period supernatural movies. There are genuine paranormal frights, but there’s more than meets the eye to this spectral tale.

Fragile – Prime Video, Vudu

Two years before [Rec] made international waves, Jauma Balagueró co-wrote and directed a small Spanish-British chiller set in a closing hospital. Calista Flockhart stars as Amy Nicholls, a new nurse that takes over the night shift at the children’s ward in a hospital scheduled to close. It’s mostly abandoned, and the patients that are left are stuck in a holding pattern until nearby hospitals free up space. That’s bad news for Amy and her young patients, who are tormented and attacked by a ghostly presence that doesn’t want them to leave. There’s an underlying fairy-tale sweetness to this ghost story, mainly as Amy bonds with young orphan Maggie, but Balagueró also brings the scares. 

Insidious – Netflix

Before The Conjuring, James Wan helmed this Leigh Whannell-scripted haunted house story that introduced the unnerving world of “The Further.” The Lambert family has barely moved into their new home when tragedy strikes. Their son Dalton suffers a fright induced fall, and soon after slips into a coma. Shortly after, their home becomes inundated with unnerving paranormal activity. They call in paranormal experts to help save their son. Instead of the traditional haunted house, it’s a person that’s haunted here, and the introduction of astral projection gives a refreshing twist to the subgenre. It’s not just the mythos and creepy look of The Further’s inhabitants that make Insidious so memorable, but plucky heroine Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye).

Paranormal Activity 3 – Hulu, Prime Video

This prequel easily marks a series high point in the Paranormal Activity franchise. Set in 1988, the film follows Katie and Kristi when they were children. When their mother’s boyfriend Dennis notices a strange anomaly on a tape he attempted to make, he decides to rig the house with cameras. Of course, the paranormal activity ramps up at a steady pace, until it explodes in haunting violence. Paranormal Activity 3 chronicles the origins of the sisters’ bond with the demonic Tobi, and the series’ third outing still manages to create innovative new scares. Like the oscillating camera, creating one of most goosebumps-inducing scares of the franchise. Tobi’s mythology and his connection to the girls are expanded in thrilling ways, and it’s refreshing that Dennis marks the first male protagonist of the series to be a genuinely nice guy. I’m looking at you, Micah and Daniel.

We Are Still Here – Prime Video

Following the death of their only son, Anne (Barbara Crampton) and Paul Sacchetti (Andrew Sensenig) decide to move to snowy, rural New England. Paul is hoping the change will shake Anne from her deep depression. Instead, Anne becomes convinced Bobby’s spirit inhabits the house. The truth is far more horrific; the house is cursed to awaken every thirty years and demand a sacrifice. Set in 1979, writer/director Ted Geoghegan creates a massive love letter to Lucio Fulci’s House by the Cemetery that permeates just about every detail of this moody haunter. Right down the insanely bloody finish. If standard haunted house movies aren’t for you, try this on for size. For puzzle solvers and Easter egg hunters, read through the house’s history in the end credits.

The best Needle Drops use well-known songs in unexpected ways and resonate so strongly that not only does the song effectively manipulate the viewer, but it becomes forever associated with the movie. The worst Needle Drops can pull a viewer right out of the film. For example, Eddie’s showdown with the Leper in It Chapter Two took a jarring left turn with the Needle Drop of Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning.” The intent was to elicit a laugh, but it felt so tonally out of place that it wound up confusing instead.

These fifteen Needle Drops not only captured the energy of the movie, they got our fists up in the air and embedded the songs so far into our skulls that they’re permanently tied to their respective horror movies…

Scream – “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper

Nick Cave & The Bad Seed’s “Red Right Hand” is most associated with the franchise, but it’s this Needle Drop that perfectly showcased the humor in this beloved horror-comedy. The cue comes right after Principal Himbry (Henry Winkler), alone in his office, gets stabbed to death by Ghostface. Just as he utters his last breath and the mask of the killer is reflected in his eyes, Alice Cooper’s hit song kicks in. It’s an on-the-nose dad joke, in song form. We miss you, Wes Craven.

Night of the Demons – “Stigmata Martyr” by Bauhaus

Not only does this song serve as an introduction to Gothic rock back Bauhaus, but it’s intertwined with one memorable scene in horror; a demonic Angela’s mesmerizing dance of seduction. Not just visually compelling, this scene imbued the film with rock attitude.

You’re Next – “Looking for the Magic” by Dwight Twilley

It’s next to impossible to walk away from a viewing of You’re Next without humming this tune. Granted, a large part of that earworm effect might be due to the fact that it plays on loop throughout the narrative. Mostly, though, it’s that the pop song perfectly captures the tone of the film with an upbeat tempo that belies a somewhat unsettling undertone.

1408 – “We’ve Only Just Begun” by The Carpenters

If ever there was a song title that sent a clear message in a horror movie, it’s this one. Taking a hit single pop song by The Carpenters and turning it into an ominous threat was a brilliant stroke of genius. A stroke with a major sense of humor, which is fitting for a Stephen King adaptation. Mike Enslin’s (John Cusack) skepticism flipped upside down thanks to the menacing supernatural presence in room 1408, and this song on the clock radio continuously cues up another round of supernatural onslaught. If you didn’t think the song was creepy before, you will now.

Pet Sematary – “Sheena is a Punk Rocker” by Ramones

Almost every single track by the Ramones, a Stephen King favorite, is catchy as hell. Including this one, which serves as cheerful misdirection. The truck driver is bopping along to this song as he barrels down that fateful road, and it’s intercut with the Creed family enjoying a blissful day under the sun. Neither parties are aware that they’re mere seconds away from tragedy. This optimistic song choice is punctuated by a devastating sucker punch.

Shaun of the Dead – “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen

Sometimes the best Needle Drops are the ones meant to get your fists pumping and your feet tapping along. The lyrics and tempo of Queen’s song say it all, as the jukebox kicks in, and zombies invade the Winchester pub. Appropriately, the survivors fight the horde off along with the beat of the song.

The Final Girls – “Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes

This Needle Drop essentially becomes the theme of the film, acting as aural symbolism of the deep bond between mother and daughter. It’s a suitably melancholic song about an actress and ultimately brings closure to Max over the death of her mother. Moreover, it completely recontextualizes an ’80s synth classic, ensuring we can no longer hear this song without thinking of The Final Girls.

Us – “I Got 5 On It” by Luniz

As previously stated, the best Needle Drops take a previously released song and apply it in a completely unexpected way, and this makes for a perfect example. The song’s hook is about kicking in money to buy weed, and it’s used as a film as a fun throwback to dad Gabe Wilson (Winston Duke) when it plays on the radio on the road to vacation. The song becomes a fun family moment, presenting the dynamic between the foursome soon to be terrorized by doppelgangers, but it also hides a more sinister foreshadowing in terms of keeping the beat. That the song was featured in the trailers further ensured that we’d never hear this one the same way again.

Stir of Echoes – “Paint it Black” by G.O.B.

This cover of the famous song by The Rolling Stones essentially becomes a supporting character in this spectral murder mystery. When Kevin Bacon’s Tom is hypnotized to become more open-minded, it works and then some, making him susceptible to the other side. That allows the ghost of a missing girl to haunt Tom into solving her murder, and this song becomes a vital tool in unlocking the mystery. So, while “Paint it Black” features in numerous T.V. series and movies, it’s never as prominent as it is here.

Final Destination – “Rocky Mountain High” by John Denver

John Denver’s folk song and a love letter to Colorado doesn’t initially seem like a suitable theme for Death, though it does effectively render an uplifting song a sinister one. That alone would make it an ominous Needle Drop worthy of the film’s suspenseful tone, but then you take into account that John Denver died in a plane crash, and well, it’s an eerily fitting pick. Alex (Devon Sawa) first hears it playing over the speakers in the airport, just before the plane crashes, and again throughout the film as Death claims more victims. Death’s song changed with every entry in the franchise, but the original set the mold.

Insidious – “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” by Tiny Tim

Something is disconcerting about a demon that adores this already relatively creepy song. What’s meant to be a romantic song becomes anything but thanks to Tiny Tim’s overly cheerful, high-pitched voice, and the lyric “by the window, that’s where I’ll be” takes on a voyeuristic quality as ghosts terrorize the Lambert family. That it’s the Lipstick-Face Demon’s theme makes a lot of sense; the song perfectly conveys the terrifying yet whimsical aesthetic of the Further.

American Psycho – “Hip to Be Square” by Huey Lewis and the News

The entirety of Patrick Bateman can be distilled into this iconic scene, in which he manically breaks down this song and its band while preparing his latest victim for slaughter. It’s a song choice befitting of the era in which the movie is set, but it’s enhanced tenfold by Christian Bale’s performance and unforgettable dance moves.

The Devil’s Rejects – “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd 

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s power ballad pops up often in cinema; it’s a massively popular song considered to be the band’s signature, after all. From a lyrical perspective, it’s also a fantastic choice as a moving sendoff to one of horror’s most twisted families: the Firefly clan. The remaining trio of murderers flee their persecutors, badly wounded, then opt to go down in a blaze of glory when they encounter a police barricade. There’s no dialogue or sound outside of “Free Bird,” and it makes for a moving conclusion. Well, until the sequel, anyway…

The Silence of the Lambs – “Goodbye Horses” by Q Lazzarus

Sometimes movies pluck little known, obscure songs from the ether and transform them into classics. The story goes that director Jonathan Demme met Q Lazzarus in a taxi, where she played her demo for him. He was blown away, and put it in his movie Married to the Mob. It wasn’t until he used it in the iconic Buffalo Bill dance scene that the song took off. Thematically, it’s earworm precision. A dark wave song about transcendence complements James Gumb’s desire to become a woman, going so far as to craft a woman’s suit. Ted Levin’s dance, complete with a woman’s scalp on his head, launched this song and its corresponding scene into the pop culture lexicon.

An American Werewolf in London – “Blue Moon” by The Marcels

While the film is full of amazing Needle Drops, including two other renditions of “Blue Moon,” it’s the end credit version by The Marcels that wins the prize. Why? Because it serves as a much-needed reminder that this movie is as much a comedy as it is a horror movie, by way of major emotional whiplash. The closing moments of the movie see poor Alex tearfully mourning her lover David, lying dead and naked post werewolf rampage. It’s an absolute downer. Cue the buoyant take on “Blue Moon” by The Marcels, which sends the audience off on a much more cheerful note.
