M (Fritz Lang, 1931) – The first sound film from the famous Expressionist film director Fritz Lang (Metropolis). A whistling serial killer stalks and murders children, and the criminals of the city decide to catch him. M is said to be the first serial killer movie – technically that’s not true, but it is the first serial killer film that people still watch with fear and compassion. It’s absolutely “a must”, not least because of the final monologue from Peter Lorre, heartbreaking and scary.
