Ringu (1998) & The Ring (2002)
Yup, the original Japanese film Ringu was also based on a book of the same name. Written by Koji Suzuki in 1991, it still followed a reporter who watched a mysterious videotape that kills viewers a week after they watch it. Of course, in the films the protagonist has been converted into a female. The book is also much more explicit about what happened to Sadako/Samara before she died. It’s some pretty disturbing stuff.
