The Exorcist (1973)
William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist, written in 1971, is arguably scarier than its film adaptation. The depictions of black mass will haunt you as you breeze through his short novel. Friedkin’s film is remarkably true to its source material, but there’s something about imagining what is written on the page that is infinitely more terrifying than seeing it put on screen.
