The Birds (1963)
Less a novel an more of a novela, The Birds was actually the second adaptation of one of Daphne du Maurier’s works that Hitchcock directed (the first was 1940’s Rebecca). It is nonetheless a terrifying story that was adapted into an equally terrifying film. Written in 1952, The Birds focuses on protagonist Nat Hocken as he tries to protect his daughter from attacking birds. If you think the film had a downer of an ending, give du Maurier’s story a read.
