Christophe Gans, who also directed the 2006 feature film adaptation of Silent Hill, wrote the script for the new movie alongside Sandra Vo-Anh and William Josef Schneider.

The classic horror television series “Dark Shadows” is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and the celebration will include a brand new Blu-ray release and so much more.

From Dark Sky Selects, for starters, the 3-Disc Blu-ray set Dark Shadows: Volume 1 will bring 40 restored episodes of the legendary series to Blu-ray for the first time ever.

Dark Shadows: Volume 1 takes a bite out of Blu-ray on September 15, 2026.

Dark Sky previews that the upcoming Blu-ray “contains 40 restored episodes in high definition for the first time plus special introductory featurette and exclusive interviews with cast members.”

With its alluring tales of Gothic mystery and supernatural intrigue, Dark Shadows became one of the most popular daytime series of all time, first airing on ABC-TV. The character of Barnabas Collins, a guilt-ridden, 175 year-old vampire brought the show tremendous success.

Released from his chained coffin after nearly two centuries, Barnabas arrives at the Collinwood estate claiming to be a cousin from England. Although noticing Barnabas’ resemblance to his “ancestor” in the foyer portrait, the Collins family does not realize he is the same Barnabas who lived at Collinwood in the late 1700s. As Barnabas settles into the Old House on the property, those around him are unaware of the horrors that will soon follow.

Additionally, exclusive collectables and 60th Anniversary merch will include a t-shirt, a music box, and a tote bag. You can order all of these items over on Dark Sky Selects now.

Created by Dan Curtis, “Dark Shadows” aired between 1966 and 1971, starring Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins. Tim Burton turned the show into a movie back in 2012.

On a related note, a brand new “Dark Shadows” animated series is in the works!

The first film in ten years from visionary director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon Demon, Only God Forgives) is now available to watch at home.

Her Private Hell will arrive on digital platforms to rent or own beginning today, August 25, followed by a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo on November 24, 2026.

In the film, when a mysterious mist engulfs a futuristic metropolis, unleashing a deadly and elusive entity, a troubled young woman searches for her father. Her quest collides with an American GI on a harrowing odyssey to rescue his daughter from Hell.

Sophie Thatcher (“Yellowjackets”), Charles Melton (“Riverdale”), Kristine Froseth (How to Blow Up a Pipeline), Havana Rose Liu (No Exit), and Diego Calva (Babylon) star.

The ensemble also includes Dougray Scott (Hitman), Aoi Yamada (Perfect Days), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine), and Hidetoshi Nishijima (Shin Ultraman).

Nicolas Winding Refn directs Her Private Hell from a script he co-wrote with Esti Giordani (“Vida”).

Pino Donaggio (Carrie, Don’t Look Now) composed the score.

Her Private Hell definitely won’t be for everyone. I wrote in my review, “While it never fully pulls you into its tangled web of artistic musings, there’s a lot to admire in a technically stunning feature this fearless in its incomprehensibility and ambition.”

The physical media release will come packed with exclusive bonus features; the 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray includes a behind-the-scenes music video, an interview with Nicolas Winding Refn, an interview with the cast, the teaser and trailer.

While we wait to learn more about the Sorority Row sequel recently teased by screenwriter Josh Stolberg, the 2009 slasher remake has been set to make its 4K debut.

Lionsgate Limited is unleashing an exclusive new 4K Ultra HD & Blu-ray Steelbook on September 15, available to preorder now.

Who’s killing the sisters of Theta Pi?

Rosman University’s Theta Pi – Cassidy (Briana Evigan), Chugs (Margo Harshman), Jessica (Leah Pipes), Ellie (Rumer Willis), and Claire (Jamie Chung) – are committed to staying mum regarding the prank that ended in tragedy for Megan (Audrina Patridge), one of their own. But when graduation day arrives, so does terror, as a killer hunts Theta Pi’s sisters one by one.

The Stuart Hendler-directed film grossed $27 million worldwide against a $12.5 million budget for Lionsgate. Stolberg co-wrote with Peter Goldfinger.

Matt Donato wrote in his Revenge of the Remakes column, “Sorority Row feels ahead of its decade in how it subverts slasher expectations like women being helpless fawns and men getting away with sleazy behavior as locker room heroes.”

The upcoming release comes packed with extras, too.

Special Features on the 4K +BD + Digital Steelbook:

  • Sorority Row in 4K with Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®
  • SteelBook art by Vance Kelly

Warner Bros. is celebrating Halloween this year with a tribute to some of the ’80s Horror greats, collecting together five of them for a retro-style SteelBook library case release.

It’s called the ‘80s Horror 5-Film SteelBook Library Case Set, and it’s exclusively available for pre-order now through Amazon. The set will be releasing on October 6, 2026.

With VHS style packaging, the set includes the following 1980s horror classics…

  • The Shining
  • Little Shop of Horrors

Amazon previews, “Iconic ’80s Horror films all in an Exclusive, Limited Edition SteelBook Library Case. This collection includes all films on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, & Digital.”

Nightmare on Elm Street: Can your nightmares be fatal? In this classic of the horror film genre that launched a movie franchise, a hideously scarred man who was murdered by a lynch mob returns years later in the terrifying nightmares of his killers’ teenaged children … And the dreaming teenagers are starting to die in their sleep.

Poltergeist: A typical family in a quiet suburb of a normal California faces a frightening ordeal when its home is invaded by a Poltergeist. Late one night, 10-year-old Carol Anne Freeling (Heather O’Rourke) hears a voice coming from inside the television set … At first, the spirits that invade the Freelings’ home seem like playful children. But then they turn angry. And when Carol Anne is pulled from this world into another, Steve and Diane Freeling (Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams) turn to an exorcist (Zelda Rubinstein) in this horror classic from director Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and producer and screenwriter Steven Spielberg.

The Lost Boys: When a single mother and her two sons move to the sleepy seaside California town of Santa Carla, they discover much more than they anticipated in this visually stunning blend of hip humor, horror and rock ‘n’ roll about the most compelling group of contemporary vampires ever to put fang to vein.

The Shining: Academy Award winner Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall star in director Stanley Kubrick’s disturbing adaptation of Stephen King’s blockbuster horror novel. When writer Jack Torrance (Nicholson)–who has a history of alcoholism and child abuse–takes a job as winter caretaker for a hotel high in the Rocky Mountains, he, his wife (Duvall) and their psychic young son will be isolated until spring. But once the first blizzard closes the road out, the accumulated power of evil deeds committed at the hotel begins to drive Jack mad. Now there may be no escape for his wife and son in this haunting madness, memory and family violence.

Little Shop of Horrors: A nerdy florist finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant who demands to be fed.

“A lot of things weren’t ideal, but we just went for it.”

That’s legendary writer/director Abel Ferrara, in one of the new interviews shot for Vinegar Syndrome’s 4K release of his cult classic Body Snatchers, the third major cinematic iteration of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

It’s a rare studio movie outing for Ferrara, and as we learn through the disc’s many special features, it was often an adjustment for the exploitation icon to learn where the guardrails were with Warner Bros. Pictures. The result is a film with a sometimes confused tone, but as this new 4K restoration reveals, Body Snatchers is also so much more: a Gen-X ode to nonconformity wrapped in a gritty sci-fi horror skin. It’s essential Ferrara, and it’s finally getting the boutique 4K treatment it deserves.

As Ferrara outlines in his interview, he didn’t necessarily want to set the film on a military base, but previous drafts of the script from writers like Larry Cohen and Stuart Gordon meant that he and writer Nicholas St. John had to stick with it, shooting at an Alabama military base with help from the real armed forces (because Warner Bros. has that kinda pull). The original story is set in an everybody-knows-everybody kind of small town, while Philip Kaufman’s incredible remake is set within a scientific community in San Francisco.

Ferrara, lacking that kind of intimacy between characters, instead makes his film a story about a family already fraying at the edges, and what happens when an all-consuming alien force starts trying to pull them apart even more.

The military base setting, which allows Ferrara to play with long takes and anamorphic lenses to great effect amid the fencing and identical barracks, creates a sense of deep loneliness for the protagonist, teenager Marti (Gabrielle Anwar), who’s dragged reluctantly along with her Dad (Terry Kinney), stepmom (Meg Tilly), and stepbrother (Reilly Murphy). Marti’s Dad Steve works with the EPA, and he’s taking samples in all the places where the government stored its many chemicals and other weapons, checking to see how much might have leached into the soil, the air, or the water. Meanwhile, Marti starts to bond with the base commander’s (R. Lee Ermey) daughter, Jenn (Christine Elise), the base’s resident nonconformist.

On the surface, Ferrara is playing with some very basic, familiar elements to anyone who’s seen things like The X-Files, which debuted the same year, or other conspiracy thrillers of the ’80s and ’90s. The government’s hiding something, the soldiers are suspicious, there’s no fun to be had, and the stress of constantly moving is really getting to Marti, who’d rather be on her own than stuck with the woman who “replaced” her mom. Ferrara starts the movie, wisely, with a strange, violent encounter with what seems like a deluded soldier in a gas station bathroom, adding to the grit and the grime of the production. It creates an immediate jolt, and Ferrara keeps you on edge throughout the rest of the film before finally dialing the bombast up to 11 in a finale that showcases Warner Bros.’ budget for the film.

It doesn’t always work. I personally think the ending is a bit scattered and a bit too concerned with one-upping itself several times to produce a satisfying emotional conclusion, but Body Snatchers works because Ferrara knows exactly how to scare, how to titillate, and how to keep us on edge, something showcased brilliantly with this restoration. The grit of his production, the feeling of being stranded on a crumbling military base with nothing but a local bar to provide distraction, is baked into every frame, beautifully preserved and highlighted by the restorers.

The light also looks wonderful, particularly toward the end, when Ferrara uses searchlights and spotlights – the harsh light of military surveillance – to shoot through blinds like bright blades. It looks gorgeous, and given how hard this film was to find for so long, it’s about time we got to see it like this.

Body Snatchers

The special features, including a wonderful deep dive into the film’s production in a commentary track by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, all add to the feeling, outlined by Ferrara himself, that he was basically getting away with something when he made this picture. There are moments that have a pure, low-budget exploitation soul, all dissolving corpses and tangled root-like tentacles, and that feels like vintage Ferrara, something the interviews underline.

My only real gripe is that we don’t get more of these cast and crew stories, particularly with Ferrara himself. I could listen to him tell war stories from movie sets, punctuated by the occasional “Ya dig?,” for hours.

Vinegar Syndrome as a label is at its best when it’s shining a fresh spotlight not just on films that were nearly lost or underseen, but films that feel like a true feat of moviemaking which went largely unnoticed and unappreciated for years after its release. Body Snatchers is one of those movies, not a perfect film but a wonderful blend of studio thriller and Ferrara’s gnarly, relentless artist’s soul.

Now, we get to see it the way it was meant to be seen, and as is so often the case with pod person stories and their timeless studies of paranoia and assimilation, it’s as relevant now as it was 33 years ago.

Body Snatchers is now available in 4K UHD from Vinegar Syndrome.

And in Roth’s Hostel: Part II, “Three American college students studying abroad are lured to a Slovakian hostel and discover the grim reality behind it.”

Of course, the hell that awaits the characters in both films is that they’re the victims of rich, sadistic elites who have paid for the privilege of being able to brutally slaughter them.

The twisted world of Elite Hunting was further explored in Hostel: Part III, but that film was not directed by Eli Roth and it is not included in Scream Factory’s 4K SteelBook set.

Gregory Tudor spent years in a mental hospital after the trauma of witnessing the cold-blooded killing of his beloved childhood ice cream man, Butch Brickle. Eventually released to the alleged care of the vapid Nurse Wharton, and still entirely consumed with the art of frozen confections, Gregory takes over Butch’s ice cream business and, of course, his iconic truck. But Gregory’s secret recipes for Rocky Road and Pistachio have improved upon those of his idol, as he adds selected bits of human corpses for an extra tasty treat. But when a few neighborhood kids get a bit too nosy and arouse the interest (and hunger) of the police, Gregory has little choice but to make sure they end up in the next batch of his popular ice cream.

Night School, director Ken Hughes and writer Ruth Avergon‘s tale of a headhunting slasher on the streets of Boston, arrived in the early Golden Age of the slasher film and never quite broke through the endurance test that other films in the subgenre, like Friday the 13th, managed to pass with flying colors. Blame it on a more cerebral tone, a crowded market, whatever you like, but saying it’s a shame that the film didn’t break through doesn’t begin to cover it.

Night School isn’t just an underrated slasher, or an underseen one. For my money, it’s one of the best films the subgenre has ever produced, full stop, and Vinegar Syndrome’s new 4K UHD restoration, arriving just in time for the film’s 45th anniversary, is must-have proof. Stacked with special features highlighting the craft of the film and its place in slasher history, and headlined by a gorgeous restoration showcasing the wonderfully textured production, this is Night School as it’s meant to be seen for slasher devotees everywhere.

So, what makes the film so effective? It starts very simply, with the revelation that a killer with a very cool knife and a motorcycle helmet as a mask is murdering young women in Boston, taking off their heads, and dropping those heads in the nearest body of water (no matter how small).

Solving the case falls on Judd Austin (Leonard Mann), a detective with an academic background who traces all of the victims in one way or another back to a local night school. There, suspicion falls on a womanizing professor (Drew Snyder) who sleeps around on his research assistant and romantic partner, Eleanor (Rachel Ward), whose own death could be right around the corner.

I’m doing my best to stay as spoiler-free as possible here, not just because I think plenty of slasher fans still need to see Night School, but because the film is quite determined to be a whodunit in the classic Italian giallo sense. The kills are brutal and elaborate, the killer deliberately covered head-to-toe in leather and a gleaming black helmet, the knife and the headhunting a disturbing signature. Avergon’s script is well-versed in the trappings of exactly this kind of story, complete with red herrings galore. And yet, by the time it’s all wrapping up, there’s also the sense that the answer was right there in front of you the entire time, something the very best films by legends like Mario Bava and Dario Argento could also achieve.

But on to the restoration: Like the best of the gialli, Night School is also a beautifully engineered film full of colors and delicate camera compositions and sound design. The opening kill, which takes place on a playground carousel outside of a daycare, is rich in exactly this kind of thing, from the cityscapes that lead into the scene to the sound of a motorcycle slowly rolling forward, its engine already dead. Cinematographer Mark Irwin, best known for his many collaborations with David Cronenberg, paints the film in rich reds, absinthe greens, and haunting, chilled blue-white light on wet Boston streets, all of which are preserved beautifully by the restoration team at work on this one.

It’s a movie that very deliberately evokes a specific place – the aging streets of Boston in the 1980s, and the halls of relatively low-level academia – and then takes that place into haunted territory, saturating every frame with color and shadow that suggests a killer lurking just out of view.

Night School is not a massively gore-heavy film, but it does deliver the slasher goods with a series of tense, often unpredictable kills and body discoveries that range from the darkly comic to the flat-out jaw-dropping. That’s thanks to the sound design, the score, the editing from Robert Reitano, and more, all of which add to the film’s giallo soul.

In every case, the scene’s geography is outstanding, and it’s easy to see where the simplest possible kill shot might land, but the film never goes for the obvious. Throw in a surprisingly (for 1981, anyway) feminist bent to the storytelling and some very progressive moments for an early slasher film, and this one fits right in with Black Christmas and The Slumber Party Massacre as a film with depth you can just keep unpacking.

That depth, helped along by a load of featurettes and two new commentary tracks featuring members of the crew, is what stands out the most in this new 4K set. Night School may be a niche film recognized mostly by horror addicts and the slasher faithful, but it deserves to be something more, a landmark on the roadmap of slasher cinema history. It’s one of the best in the genre, and this restoration highlights, underlines, and shouts that from the rooftops.

Night School is now available in 4K UHD from Vinegar Syndrome.

Available as of today from Arrow Video is a new box set that might arguably be the definitive way to watch Netflix’s blockbuster series Stranger Things.

At the very least, Stranger Things: The Complete Series puts emphasis on “complete.” That’s evident in its special features alone.

Special and Deluxe editions of Stranger Things: The Complete Series are available for purchase now, featuring an array of exclusive bonus content, including bloopers, interviews with the cast and crew, and behind-the-scenes featurettes, designed for the ultimate Stranger Things experience.

The Deluxe Edition is presented in custom packaging featuring newly-commissioned artwork, alongside a wealth of extra material: a 148-page booklet, exclusive art cards, a Hellfire Club patch, double-sided posters for each season, and much more.

This limited-edition release features all 42 episodes of the show’s five season run on more than 25 discs, all housed in a set featuring gorgeous artwork by Juan Ramos. “We always dreamed that Stranger Things could be owned in its entirety,” said Matt and Ross Duffer, “not just as a collector’s set, but as a way to preserve the show for decades to come.”

Their imprint looms large over the release, including writing in the 148-page book that also includes original design sketches, concept art, and storyboards. All of which would warrant the steep price tag alone for the diehard Stranger Things fan, but Arrow Video upped the ante with collectible surprises as well. Arcade patches, stickers, Hellfire Club dice, and an extremely detailed map of Hawkins, Indiana- double-sided to account for the Upside Down, of course – are among the highlights for this all-ages set.

Adorn your walls with posters representative of your favorite season! That’s also an option with this set’s offerings.

All of which to say that it’s rare for Netflix to make the jump into physical media, and they’ve enlisted Arrow Video to give it the best possible treatment. They certainly brought utmost care and attention to this release. As such, both the standard and deluxe sets come with steep price tags that start at $160 depending on format. While that’s likely a deterrent to the casual viewer, it’s more than worth it for fans.

It may be less convenient than hitting play on Netflix, sure, but there’s a lot to be said about the potential for quality upgrades to your viewing. No spotty internet or compression issues to be found here when it comes to the 4K Ultra HD or Blu-ray discs.

That’s really the biggest takeaway from this release: the untapped potential still of Netflix’s streaming library of originals that are ripe for similar treatment. Series and films that could receive Arrow Video levels of treatment on physical media.

Fans of Stranger Things can venture into the Upside Down one last time this spooky season at Halloween Horror Nights, but there may be no better way to ring in the series’ tenth anniversary than a rewatch with this expansive, well-curated box set.

After releasing in theaters last month, NEON announced today that horror romance Leviticus will arrive on digital platforms to rent or own beginning July 28, followed by a Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD Combo and DVD release on September 8, 2026.

Leviticus marks the feature debut by writer/director Adrian Chiarella.

Joe Bird (Talk to Me) and Stacy Clausen play star-crossed teenage boys who must escape a violent entity that takes the form of the person they desire most — each other.

Mia Wasikowska (Crimson Peak), Jeremy BlewittEwen Leslie (The Nightingale), and Davida McKenzie (Silent Night) round out the cast of horror movie Leviticus.

Leviticus is a strong debut with an incisive voice at the helm,” I wrote in my review out of Sundance. “We care deeply about Naim and Ryan’s survival, making Leviticus a tense, atmospheric, and claustrophobic vision of young love in a hateful world.”

Leviticus is the perfect title for writer-director Adrian Chiarella‘s powerful feature debut,” Meagan’s review explains, “a searing anthem against the corrosive nature of fear and bigotry.”

The physical media release comes packed with exclusive bonus features, the home entertainment release includes a feature commentary with Adrian Chiarella, interviews with Chiarella, Stacy Clausen, and Joe Bird, an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette, and the official trailer.

Look for Leviticus on Digital next week, and check out the box art for September’s Blu-ray release this September.

1962. Nine-year-old Frankie Scarlatti enjoys a homespun childhood in a rustic Western New York town. The entire community gets into the spirit of Halloween, but then two bullies prank Frankie by locking him in his school cloakroom, leaving him trapped for the night. Alone and afraid, his slumber is interrupted when the ghost of a little girl appears, and Frankie witnesses the specter of her murder by an unseen assailant. Later, while recovering at home, the girl’s ghost appears to him again. With help from his older brother, Frankie begins investigating the circumstances of her death. He soon discovers that her murder was one of several unsolved crimes connected to a local child-killer. As the town’s bucolic veneer fades and long-buried secrets and tensions bubble to the surface, all of the clues to the mystery seem to point towards a huge mansion inhabited by a reclusive woman known as “The Lady in White.”

A nostalgia-driven ghost story wrapped within an intricate murder mystery and coming-of-age drama, writer-director-composer Frank LaLoggia’s passion project Lady in White remains one of the most beautiful and original American horror films of the 1980s. Featuring acclaimed actors Alex Rocco (The Godfather), Len Cariou (Executive Decision), and Sydney Lassick (CarrieThe Unseen), it boasts the first starring role by Lukas Haas (Mars AttacksInception) as well as breathtaking photography by Academy Award® winner Russell Carpenter (True LiesThe Lawnmower Man). Vinegar Syndrome is honored to bring this genre masterpiece to 4K UHD, newly restored from its original 35mm camera negative and presented in three versions: its pre-release director’s cut, its extended home-video version, and its original theatrical version, along with an abundance of both new and archival extras.

Paul Lê wrote here on Bloody Disgusting back in 2023, “Over the years, fans have described this film as gateway horror, but they liken it more to The Watcher in the Woods than, say, Hocus Pocus or Casper. There are chilling moments that warrant its PG-13 rating.”

Renate Reinsve (A Different Man) also stars in Backrooms.

Meagan wrote in her review, “Backrooms is at once complex and sparse, but never repetitive. It might be set in 1990, but it effectively captures modern anxieties and isolation in a way that frequently makes your skin crawl. While the journey ultimately loses steam by its cryptic end, Parsons’ visual representation of the human psyche disturbs like no other.”

YouTube prodigy Kane Parsons makes his feature directorial debut based on his creepypasta-inspired video series, which debuted in 2022 and has amassed over 190 million views to date.

YouTube prodigy Kane Parsons makes his feature directorial debut based on his creepypasta-inspired video series, which debuted in 2022 and has amassed over 190 million views to date.

Over one month later, Scary Movie is still playing in theaters and still making money, with the franchise’s brand new installment slashing into $224.5 million at the worldwide box office.

In fact, the Scary Movie franchise has now collectively passed $1 billion in theaters!

Scary Movie is headed to Digital at home soon, and a listing on Amazon this week indicates that the film will be making its way to Blu-ray and DVD this coming September.

The film is listed for DVD and Blu-ray release on September 22, 2026.

We don’t have any additional release information at this time. Stay tuned.

Marlon Wayans (“Shorty”), Shawn Wayans (“Ray”), Anna Faris (“Cindy”), and Regina Hall (“Brenda”) reunite for the new Scary Movie, with the cast also including Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Jon Abrahams, Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, Kim Wayans, Benny Zielke, Cameron Scott Roberts, Heidi Gardner, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, and Felissa Rose.

Twenty-six years after outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer (“Ghostface”), the Core Four are back in the killer’s crosshairs and no horror movie IP is safe…

Scary Movie will slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t. A whole lot has changed in the horror genre since the Wayans Brothers were in charge of the franchise; their involvement ended with Scary Movie 2 back in 2001!

Michael Tiddes (A Haunted House) directed the new Scary Movie.

One of contemporary horror’s best werewolf movies is 2017’s Good Manners, and it’s finally set to receive a proper physical media release.

Icarus Films is partnering with OCN Distribution to unleash a new Blu-ray that’s now available to preorder via Vinegar Syndrome. and with a limited edition slipcover.

Set in São Paulo, the film follows Clara, a lonely nurse from the outskirts of the city who is hired by mysterious and wealthy Ana to be the nanny of her soon to be born child. Against all odds, the two women develop a strong bond. But a fateful night marked by a full moon changes their plans.

Good Manners is the second collaboration between filmmakers Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra, who write and direct. Zama’s Rui Poças‘ cinematography captures this unique werewolf tale described as “Disney meets Jacques Tourneur.”

Our own Trace Thurman wrote in his review, “With Good Manners, Rojas and Dutro have made one of the best werewolf movies ever made. That they are able juggle commentaries on racism and classism while still managing to tell two deeply affecting love stories is remarkable.”

BONUS FEATURES:

  • Commentary from film critics Shelagh Rowan-Legg and Carolyn Mauricette
  • 12-page booklet with an essay by film critic Nicolas Pedrero-Setzer
  • Making-of short film: The Making of a Werewolf (2 mins)
  • Two additional short films from the filmmakers: A STEM (15 mins), directed by Juliana Rojas & Marco Dutras, and DOPPELGANGER (24 mins), directed by Juliana Rojas

There’s something really insidious, in a great way, about setting a horror story in a movie theater. It’s something filmmakers have known for decades, going back to The Blob and beyond, but it never fails to strike a chord because, in a way, it hits us exactly where we feel safest. Seeing a horror movie on the big screen, surrounded by like-minded moviegoers, is a communal experience, one in which everyone screams and laughs together. We are together, and therefore we are much less vulnerable, so when someone punctures that bubble of safety, it’s all the more frightening.

Matinee (also released as Midnight Matinee in some territories) is a movie that understands this from the jump, setting up a stunning opening kill that predates a similar sequence in Scream 2 by almost a full decade. A smart, layered, very stylish Canadian slasher released at the tail end of the 1980s, it’s one of those films that’s spent a lot of time in the dark even among the horror faithful (I’m willing to admit that I hadn’t seen it until recently). Now, a new Kino Cult Blu-ray release is out to change that, and it reveals a slasher essential that, while not perfect, has charm and style to spare.

Two years ago, the Paramount Theater in the small town of Halston closed its doors when, during the theater’s annual horror festival, a young moviegoer was murdered in his seat, mid-movie. Leads in the murder quickly dried up, and the case is cold enough now that the town barely talks about it anymore. Fortunately for local horror fans, that means the Paramount can open again in time for its Halloween horror festival, and they’ve got a hotshot producer (William B. Davis) in town for just such an occasion.

As the festival draws closer, the film introduces us to a variety of characters, including rebellious teenager Sherri (Beatrice Boepple), her boyfriend Lawrence (Jeff Schultz), her overbearing mother Marilyn (Gillian Barber), and the theater’s kindly owner, Earle (Don S. Davis), who’s just hoping he can run a business without more bloodshed. But someone clearly remembers what happened two years ago, and their violent streak is on a collision course with opening night.

Matinee has quite a few things going for it, but what stands out right away, and maintains a consistent grip right up through a wonderful crescendo in the third act, is the film’s visual style. Writer/Director Richard Martin, cinematographer Cyrus Block, and special effects wizard Bob Comer make great use of the film’s limited locations, giving the movie a charming small-town feel reminiscent of Halloween or The Blob while building a self-contained little world inside the theater itself that’ll remind you of films like Popcorn and Demons.

The colors are striking, the framing is clever, and the film clearly has a ball making references to all kinds of other horror cinema moments ranging from The Phantom of the Opera to Friday the 13th. The kills, while relatively sparing with gore, are delivered with style and appropriate tension, creating that sense of unease right in the middle of a place where we as movie fans should be comfortable: The movie theater. Along the way, the Paramount itself becomes a character, and this release definitely dials up its retro splendor.

The Blu-ray upgrade preserves the film’s attention to detail and ambitious cinematography, helping the colors to pop while never letting go of the texture and feel of a relatively low-budget horror film made in Canada in the 1980s. There’s a certain gauziness to many exploitation films of this era, that haloed light you get when the scene is perhaps overexposed just a little too much. It makes the film dreamlike even when it reaches for realism, and Kino Cult’s upgrade preserves that feeling. Throw in a smart script and a whodunit plot that leans heavily into the psychological details of each character, and you’ve got a winner.

There are a couple of things that stick out as slight issues here, including the lack of special features beyond an excellent commentary from film historians and Kino regulars Jason Pichonsky and Paul Corupe. The disc is quite reasonably priced, so it’s not a letdown economically speaking, but I’d love a deeper dive into the film and the Canadian slasher boom in general, particularly for a movie like this that seems to have faded from so many memories, including mine. The sound mix also has some issues, probably left over from previous releases, that might have you playing with your volume settings a little more than you’d like over the course of a 90-minute film, particularly when lines of ADR dialogue crop up.

These are minor concerns, though, and they do nothing to diminish the impact of Matinee, or the joy that’ll come from watching this film for the first time if you’re a slasher devotee in search of something new, or even someone who saw this movie way back when hoping to relive its glories. This is one of those slashers I’ll be talking about with fellow horrorphiles for a long time, and it’s because of this disc.

Matinee is now available on Blu-ray from Kino Cult.

3.5 out of 5

Get ready for double the fun, protagonists, and body count when Ready or Not 2: Here I Come explodes on streaming next week.

Just in time for the fireworks, the sequel makes its streaming debut on Hulu and Disney+ on July 2.

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett are back, along with Samara Weaving, for more hide and slay mayhem.

Picking up moments after the all-out attack from the Le Domas family in the first Ready or Not movie, Grace (Weaving) discovers she’s reached the next level of the nightmarish game — and this time with her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) at her side. Grace has one chance to survive, keep her sister alive, and claim the High Seat of the Council that controls the world. Four rival families are hunting her for the throne, and whoever wins rules it all.

That means a higher body count and even more explosive carnage. Just how much? A whopping 325 gallons worth, the directors previously told BD.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, David Cronenberg, Elijah Wood, Kevin Durand, Olivia Cheng, Varun Saranga, and Daniel Beirne also star.

I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “More is more in Ready or Not 2. Bigger stakes, larger playing field, a higher (and more gruesome) body count, and even double the protagonists. It’s all designed to deliver maximum crowd-pleasing fun.”

The horror-comedy sequel is written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy.

After four years, terror finally comes home. Zach Cregger’s Barbarian will arrives in physical format for the first time on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray SteelBook.

Look for the stunning SteelBook that features brand-new art by Creepy Duck Design to arrive on August 11.

Special features will include:

  • Audio Commentary with Zach Cregger & Roy Lee
  • ‘Behind Barbarian’ featurette
  • Deleted Scenes

That’s thrilling news, considering nearly a year ago Cregger was lamenting the lack of progress on the release. “I have banged the drum, made phone calls, and tried my best to get some sort of physical media,” Cregger said of Barbarian. “I’m not making headway, and it kind of bums me out.”

In the film, starring Georgina CampbellBill Skarsgård, and Justin Long, a young woman books a rental home, only to discover that a man is already staying there. Against her better judgement, she decides to spend the evening, but soon discovers that there’s a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.

This is long overdue for the film’s fans. I wrote in my review, “All rules get tossed out the window, resulting in a confrontational and chilling feature that slams into you like a freight train and leaves you breathless. It’s smartly written, well crafted, and boasts a fantastic cast committed to the insanity. More importantly, it’s the type of violent, ruthless, and bloody horror that leaves a mark.”

Of course, Cregger has since made even bigger waves in horror with Weapons. His Resident Evil arrives soon after his debut feature, Barbarian, makes its long-awaited home video release.

Criterion Collection has announced the upcoming release of The Complete Kubrick Box Set, a 4K + Blu-ray collection that features EVERY SINGLE MOVIE KUBRICK DIRECTED.

“Tracing his evolution from independent maverick to Hollywood rebel to visionary transnational auteur whose every film from the mid-1960s on became a manifesto of a radically new sensibility,” Criterion previews, “The Complete Kubrick brings together the entirety of a body of work that opened popular cinema up to new realms of moral profundity and metaphysical mystery.”

Criterion continues, “Collected for the first time are Kubrick’s thirteen features and three shorts, all restored in 4K, with their original soundtracks alongside the 5.1 mixes, restored and remastered; over twenty-five hours of interviews, documentaries, and behind-the-scenes materials; and deluxe packaging illustrated with rare photographs, artwork, and documents annotated by Kubrick himself, all housed in a singular box inspired by the director’s legendary archive.”

Included in The Complete Kubrick is of course the 1980 horror masterpiece The Shining, but we’re getting more than just the version of the film we’re all deeply familiar with…

Kubrick’s international version of The Shining will also be included in the set, along with a new 4K restoration of Vivian Kubrick’s behind-the-scenes documentary!

The international version of The Shining was cut together by Kubrick for the film’s release outside the United States, and it’s a trimmed down version of the film that runs 115 minutes rather than the standard 144 minutes. Kubrick cut a full 29 minutes out of The Shining in the wake of the film’s U.S. release, and you can watch this video for a rundown of all the changes.

This version of the movie has been released on home video outside the United States, but Criterion’s Complete Kubrick set marks the first time it’s been available on U.S. home video.

The Complete Kubrick will release October 20, 2026. Pre-order yours today.

Sequel Mortal Kombat II is now available to watch at home on Digital before heading to physical media in July, but you can test your might now and watch the opening scene.

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid returns to the helm for the new sequel from a script by Jeremy Slater (“Moon Knight,” Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire).

In Mortal Kombat II, the fan-favorite champions — now joined by Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) — are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.

Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada are also part of the ensemble cast of Mortal Kombat II fighters.

Watch the opening below, which introduces a young Kitana (Sophia Xu) as Emperor Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) prepares to conquer her father, King Jerrod (Desmond Chiam), and her kingdom of Edenia. It sets the sequel’s entire plot in motion.

From New Line Cinema, James Wan’s Atomic Monster, Broken Road Productions, and Fireside Films, Mortal Kombat II is rated R for “strong bloody violence and gore, and language.”

Look for Mortal Kombat II to arrive on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on July 28, 2026.

The physical media release contains the following special features, as unveiled by IGN:

  • Mortal Kombat II: Evolving the Saga (Featurette)
    • Returning characters, new alliances and even bigger fatalities! Go behind the scenes to learn all that went into creating the latest chapter in the Mortal Kombat film saga and how the sequel expands the universe to bolder, bloodier heights.
  • Building the Realms of Mortal Kombat (Featurette)
    • From the decaying streets of Edenia to the terrifying Pit featured in the iconic video game series, discover how the Mortal Kombat II design teams blended practical sets with groundbreaking VFX to create the legendary realms in the film.
  • Mortal Kombat II: Choose Your Fighter (Featurette)
    • Awaken your Arcana as you meet the cast and explore the brutal weapons, epic costumes and fierce training that went into bringing their characters to life.
  • Klose Quarters Kombat (Featurette)
    • Cast members and key creatives share insights into how the stunt preparation, intense fight scenes and weapons training shaped both classic moves and new, merciless combat styles.
  • A “Boon” to Gamers Everywhere (Featurette)
    • Sit down with chief Mortal Kombat mythmaker and creator Ed Boon for a deep dive into the franchise’s storied history and ongoing evolution that spans three decades of near-infinite games, films and comics, culminating with the live-action sequel.

Scream is a franchise that is very near and dear to the hearts of many Gen X and Millennial horror fans who experienced the first film at the perfect moment when their own media literacy and genre fandom was starting to take off. In many respects, Scream has turned into the very thing that it’s slyly been satirizing.

However, it’s still largely a slasher franchise that actually has something to say. Mileage varies regarding the Scream sequels’ reception, but 2011’s Scream 4Wes Craven’s final film — is right up there with Scream 2 as far as I’m concerned. Arriving a decade after Scream 3, Scream 4 has plenty of new material to pull from and sinks its claws into the whole horror remake craze that was ramping up during the 2000s.

Not only does this give Scream 4 more to do than its predecessor, but the film’s grander message about destructive clout chasing and gaining fame through infamy in a social media-obsessed age is wildly ahead of its time. It’s a motivation that rings even truer 15 years later and a sequel that’s only gotten better in the context of the following decades of horror and the subsequent Scream films that have followed in its wake.

Scream 4 is available in Ultra HD 4K for the first time in a Lionsgate Limited 4K Steelbook, a Standard 4K Edition, and even a VHS release. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the franchise’s black sheep sequel before your next franchise binge.

How Does Scream 4 Look in 4K?

The big reason to pick up this new set is that it’s the first time that Scream 4 has been available in 4K. The film is presented in Dolby Vision, 2.39:1 aspect ratio, and compressed as HEVC (H.265). From what I understand, Scream 4 was finished on a 2K digital intermediate and that a native 4K master was never created. This indicates that this 4K release is an upscale, but it’s well-handled, if that’s in fact the case.

There’s a clear difference in the crispness and details of this new version in comparison to 2011’s Blu-Ray. The colors, reds in particular, pop much better and there’s a greater sense of contrast and depth when dealing with darker tones and blacks. To this point, Scream 4 is a film that’s full of scenes that take place at night and in dark rooms. It’s crucial that the 4K’s black levels aren’t compromised and this transfer doesn’t disappoint. This is definitely the best way to see Scream 4 at this point.

One of the biggest sticking points with Scream 4 fans is the “vaseline filter” that gives the film a bright and hazy soft-focus effect. Some people absolutely hate this effect and were hoping that it would be removed in the 4K. The filter does in fact remain, but this look was always intentional on Craven’s part and an additional meta touch on the glossier look of the decade’s many horror remakes. It wouldn’t be right to remove this filter, yet, an alternate option on the disc that’s without the glossy look – or the ability to toggle it on or off – might have been a welcome alternative.

Audio Gets a Surprise Bonus Inclusion

Lionsgate Limited’s new 4K release also features Dolby Atmos, which rises to the occasion and provides solid audio design throughout the movie. There are no struggles between the broader surround sounds and the more precise and directional effects, the latter of which are boosted so that the simplest of sound effects cut right through a scene. There’s a lot more going on in the background of scenes that are evident in the mix’s rear channels, too.

It’s definitely an audio mix where you’re going to potentially notice new elements that you’ve never noticed before. Speaking of surprises, a bonus inclusion is an additional English 5.1 TrueHD audio track, which is the infamous “UK Version.” While largely the same, this audio track features a few line changes that were dubbed over in ADR and worth checking out for hardocre fans.

Scream 4 4K Release Comes Loaded with Features New and Old

Lionsgate Limited Extras (4K)

In addition to this new release including all the “Legacy” Special Features from the 2011 Blu-Ray, there are a handful of new extras that clock in at about 50 minutes of new material. These features include:

The Meta of Scream

A 15-minute breakdown on the various ways in which Scream 4 is meta. There’s a playful nature to this, but it really doesn’t feel necessary, especially for an audience who is likely not buying Scream 4 for the first time.

Rebooting the Franchise: Scream 4 Revisited

A 15-minute discussion with a handful of Scream 4’s actors (David Arquette, Marley Shelton, Nico Tortorella, and Erik Knudsen) while they talk about the film and share some stories. This is also a pretty light feature that’s full of anecdotes that you’ve probably heard before. It’s also too bad that such a small portion of the cast is assembled here.

Ghostface Revealed!

This segment is around eight minutes and gives the voice of Ghostface, Roger L. Jackson, his flowers. A feature on what Jackson brings to the Scream franchise is a decent idea and there’s a certain novelty to seeing Jackson do the voice on camera. While this is the 4K’s shortest feature, it surprisingly has the most depth.

Wes Craven: The Maestro of Scream

A special feature on Wes Craven feels like a given, but this ten-minute segment does the bare minimum. About half of the feature is made up from archival interviews with Craven, with the rest featuring the cast from “Scream 4 Revisited” weighing in on the director. It’s sweet to hear these actors talk about Craven’s impact, but it’s a rather brief tribute.

In the end, all these new features are fine, but they come across as padded filler instead of anything that actually adds real value to the film’s legacy since its last physical media release. A special feature on how Scream 4 has been reappraised over the past decade, a breakdown on the legacy of Jill Roberts (Emma Roberts), or even a discussion on what the original sequel trilogy plan was for the next films. Roberts might not have been available, but it’s hard to imagine that Kevin Williamson couldn’t have chatted for 15 minutes, especially after he was back in this universe for Scream 7. Even a new audio commentary by Williamson or the Radio Silence team would have been appreciated.

These new features are not some treasure trove of undiscovered Scream 4 intel and they’re not the reason to buy this new set. That being said, the 2011 Legacy Special Features remain robust enough.

Legacy Special Features (Blu-Ray)

Also included in this set are all the previous special features from the 2011 Blu-Ray release. These special features include:

  •     Feature Commentary with Director Wes Craven and Cast Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, and Neve Campbell (via telephone)
  •     Deleted and Extended Scenes
  •     Alternate Opening
  •     Extended Ending
  •     Gag Reel
  •     EPKs: B-Roll, Soundbites, Junket Interviews
  •     Trailers
  •     TV Spot

All of this is pretty much what you’d expect and likely footage you’ve encountered before, at least in the case of the alternate opening and deleted/extended scenes. The Deleted and Extended Scenes are the most substantial of these features with around 30 minutes of material. There’s also optional commentary from Wes Craven on all these sequences, which honestly provides some enlightening context. The audio commentary occasionally sees Roberts and Hayden Panettiere dominate the conversation. It’s still a good reservoir of knowledge from Craven and two up-and-coming talents who clearly respect the hell out of him.

Conclusion

Lionsgate Limited’s 4K Ultra HD remaster of Scream 4 is easily the film’s best release and a must-buy for anyone who has never owned the movie before. Anyone who already has this chapter of the Woodsboro murders in their collection likely doesn’t need to upgrade if they’re purely interested in new supplemental features. However, video and audio hounds, plus hardcore Scream enthusiasts, will want to spring for the improved presentation and upgrades.

After scaring up a strong theatrical run, Oddity director Damian McCarthy’s Hokum heads home to Digital this week.

Settle in for a spooky supernatural chiller as Hokum arrives on all Digital platforms to rent or own beginning June 2, followed by a Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD Combo and DVD release on August 11, 2026.

Adam Scott (“Severance”) stars in Hokum as reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman. When he retreats to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, the staff’s tales of an ancient witch haunting the honeymoon suite take hold of his mind. Disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance draw Ohm into a nightmarish confrontation with the darkest corners of his past.

Peter Coonan (“The Alienist: Angel of Darkness”), David Wilmot (“Station Eleven”), Florence Ordesh (“Departure”), Michael Patric (“Frontier”), Will O’Connell (“Game of Thrones”), Brendan Conroy (“Bodkin”), and Austin Amelio (“The Walking Dead”) also star.

Get a peek at the upcoming physical media release below, including a few special features.

Spooky Pictures’ Roy Lee (Weapons) & Steven Schneider (Insidious) produce alongside Image Nation’s Derek Dauchy (Late Night with the Devil), Tailored Film’s Ruth Treacy, Julianne Forde, & Mairtín de Barra, and Cweature Features’ Ken Kao & Josh Rosenbaum.

I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “A quaint Irish hotel with a deeply haunted history awaits an American writer in McCarthy’s third outing, continuing his streak for folkloric tales of supernatural karma and spine-tingling terror with a dark sense of humor.”

What’s next from Damian McCarthy? He’s currently writing a haunted house movie, but recent comments suggest he may be moving into other genres beyond that upcoming project.

Terror Train, like so many other horror films of its era, was drowned out by a genre cacophony. The film hit theaters just a few months after Friday the 13th in 1980, at the dawn of the post-Halloween slasher boom, and despite the presence of budding scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis (Prom Night, also starring Curtis, came out the same year), it simply didn’t find its audience.

To say that a lot has changed in the ensuing 46 years is an understatement. Today, slasher devotees hail Terror Train as an early forward thinker in the subgenre, a film that plays within the established rules of the game while also daring to try new things with the form at a time when that form was still being set in stone. Many cult films stay cult films even as they find a bigger audience, but others find a more mainstream following when curious viewers realize that they missed something special. Thanks to a new 4K from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, Terror Train seems destined to find its permanent place among the best slashers of the golden age.

As film historians Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and Josh Nelson point out early in their excellent commentary, one of two on the disc – on the film, Terror Train stands out for a lot of reasons, but one of the most important is the presence of cinematographer John Alcott. Alcott spent the late 1960s and early 1970s building a reputation as one of the most gifted DPs of his era, thanks to several films with the legendary Stanley Kubrick, including A Clockwork Orange and The Shining, and he brought all of that legendary talent to bear on Terror Train.

Working with director Roger Spottiswoode, Alcott imbues the film with often stunning beauty, painting shadows in among the firelight of the prologue sequence and the bright lights of a party train traveling by night across the Canadian landscape. His knack for shooting horror and framing slasher kills is on full display in this new restoration. The colors pop, the costumes are glossy and exciting, the expressiveness of the characters comes through, and yet the film loses none of its gritty, low-budget charm. As Nelson and Heller-Nicholas point out, the film was rushed through production in a matter of weeks in order to get tax credits lined up, giving it a seat-of-your-pants energy that’s buoyed by Alcott’s consummate professionalism and artistry.

Terror Train is also, I was pleased to find upon rewatching this disc, a wonderfully mean-spirited slasher at a time when the subgenre was still all over the place, finding its footing amid rising box office demand. Like fellow Canadian classic Black Christmas before it, the film goes for the throat from the very beginning, putting its characters in absolutely merciless situations that are made all the more dread-inducing by the theatricality of the party on board the title train. Like My Bloody Valentine, which would arrive from Canada in early 1981, it’s a film that balances tremendous mirth and showmanship with pure brutality, from the opening prank to the final kill.

This new restoration highlights all of that and more, revealing a film that seems destined to reveal more depth with each new generation of fans.

There’s so much potential exploration in this restoration, in fact, that I came away wishing the disc offered a little more in the way of behind-the-scenes flair. The features we do have, including both commentary tracks, are excellent, but I wanted to go deeper, and the features just aren’t there.

Maybe another future box set will shine an even brighter light on Terror Train‘s intricacies and the way this rushed, frantic production managed to deliver such a compelling piece of Canuxsploitation. As it is, though, this is a gorgeous restoration ornamented with solid special features, and it deserves a place on every slasher fan’s shelf.

Terror Train is available now in 4K UHD from Kino Lorber.

20th Century Studios and New Regency’s horror movie debuts on May 29 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S.

Georgina Campbell (Cold Storage, Barbarian) stars as a Kansas highway patrol officer who sets out on a journey to track down her husband’s murderer. As the hunt progresses, she comes to realize the man responsible is a sadistic serial killer, and the depth of his mental depravity and his sinister agenda is more twisted than anyone could have imagined.

Producer Gavin Polone (Zombieland, Panic Room) makes his feature directorial debut.

Psycho Killer also stars James Preston Rogers (The Blackening), Grace Dove (The Revenant), Logan Miller (Escape Room), and Malcolm McDowell (HalloweenA Clockwork Orange), and is produced by Roy Lee, Matt Berenson, Andrew Kevin Walker, and Arnon Milchan, with Martin Moszkowicz, Robert Kulzer, Yariv Milchan, Natalie Lehmann, and Kat Landsberg serving as executive producers.

Raucous splatstick comedy Over Your Dead Body puts the fun in dysfunction for a married couple, and it’s marching down the aisles to arrive on VOD next week.

Over Your Dead Body will be available for rent or purchase on Digital on May 26.

Jason Segel and Samara Weaving star in this remake of Tommy Wirkola‘s 2021 Norwegian film The Trip.

In the film,a dysfunctional couple (Segel and Weaving) head to a remote cabin to supposedly reconnect, but each has secret plans to kill the other. What the logline leaves out is that the couple’s plans to commit murder get derailed by the arrival of actual killers, and violent mayhem ensues.

The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, MacGruber) directs from a script by fellowSaturday Night Livealumni Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney.

Timothy Olyphant (Alien: Earth), Paul Guilfoyle (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), Keith Jardine (Love Lies Bleeding), and Juliette Lewis (Yellowjackets) also star.

Over Your Dead Body is rated R forstrong bloody violence, gore, sexual assault, pervasive language, and sexual content.

Taccone’s comedy earns that rating. I wrote in my SXSW review,Everyone takes a nasty pummeling here, and the gruesome deaths are as wonderfully executed with an emphasis on practical effects. Even the film’s characters are genuinely surprised by the amount of pain they can inflict or receive, which in itself elicits laughs.

From 87North, XYZ Films, and Resolute Films, the film is produced by Kelly McCormick, David Leitch, Aram Tertzakian, Nick Spicer, Guy Danella, and Lee Kim.

Executive producers include Kjetil Omberg, Jørgen Storm Rosenberg, Tommy Wirkola, Jorma Taccone, Maxime Cottray, Nate Bolotin, Timo Argillander, and Andrea Scarso.

From writer-director Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Bride! will make its streaming debut next Friday, May 22, on HBO Max. The film will air on HBO linear on May 23 at 8pm ET.

HBO Max will also have a version of The Bride! with American Sign Language, performed by ASL dubber Yamila Davis and directed by Rosa Lee Timm (Sinners with BASL).

Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley star in the iconoclastic take on the classic horror story with Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz.

It follows a lonely “Frank” who travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman, and The Bride is born.

What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!

Gyllenhaal produces alongside Emma Tillinger Koskoff (Joker, The Wolf of Wall Street), Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman Keren. Executive producers are Carla Raij, David Webb, and Courtney Kivowitz.

The Bride! is rated R for “strong/bloody violent content, sexual content/nudity, and language.”

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “The Bride! dedicates itself fully to giving the Bride of Frankenstein the chance she wasn’t really afforded in her introductory film: to live.”

From director Ben Wheatley (Meg 2: The Trench, Kill List) and writer Derek Kolstad (John Wick, Nobody), Normal is locked and loaded to watch at home next week.

The violent action thriller will be released on Digital May 19 before hitting 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on July 14 via Magnolia.

Bob Odenkirk stars as Sheriff Ulysses, whose provisional posting to the quaint Midwestern town of Normal was meant to be a welcome respite from both his marital woes and recent moral injuries in the line of duty.

But when a botched bank robbery interrupts the municipality’s tranquil pace, a dark secret is inadvertently exposed, and Ulysses soon discovers that the town is anything but its namesake.

Henry Winkler, Lena Headey, Ryan Allen, Billy MacLellan, Reena Jolly, Brendan Fletcher, Peter Shinkoda, and Jess McLeod round out the cast.

Odenkirk and Kolstad produce alongside Marc Provissiero (Nobody), in partnership with QWGmire (The Life of Chuck).

Special features:

  • Ben Wheatley: Storytelling
  • Bob Odenkirk: Normal and Ulysses
  • Derek Kolstad: The Characters
  • Henry Winkler: Mayor Kinbner
  • Marc Provissiero: The Team

Normal successfully juggles high-octane action, neo-noir crime, well-placed humor, and small-town dynamics,” I wrote in my review. “Director Ben Wheatley dips back into Free Fire territory to deliver another explosively chaotic genre-bender.”

Normal is rated R for “strong bloody violence and language.”

Ignite Films and Eagle Rock Pictures — the team behind last year’s Re-Animator 4K restoration — have announced their slate of genre titles set for 4K restorations in 2027.

Society leads the pack, targeted for an early 2027 release, followed by Horror Express, Bloody Birthday, and The Baby.

1989’s Society is directed by Brian Yuzna (Bride of Re-Animator), written by Zeph E. Daniel and Rick Fry, and stars Billy Warlock, Devin DeVasquez, Evan Richards, and Ben Meyerson.

In the body horror film, a troubled Beverly Hills teenager begins to suspect that his wealthy family and elite social circle are hiding a horrifying secret. As paranoia consumes him, he uncovers a grotesque world of privilege, corruption, and body-melting depravity lurking beneath the surface of high society.

1972’s Horror Express is directed by Eugenio Martín, written by Arnaud d’Usseau and Julian Zimet, and stars Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Telly Savalas.

In the sci-fi/horror film, an American paleontologist transports a mysterious frozen creature aboard the Trans-Siberian Express, hoping to unveil a scientific breakthrough. But during the journey, passengers begin turning up dead with their memories drained and eyes glowing white. As panic spreads through the train, rival scientists and desperate survivors must confront an ancient extraterrestrial force capable of possessing human minds.

1981’s Bloody Birthday is directed by Ed Hunt (The Brain), written by Hunt and Barry Pearson, and stars Lori Lethin, Melinda Cordell, Julie Brown, Susan Strasberg, and José Ferrer.

In the slasher, during a rare solar eclipse, three children are born under a sinister planetary alignment said to eliminate all human emotion. Ten years later, the seemingly innocent trio embarks on a brutal killing spree in their quiet suburban town, targeting anyone who threatens their dark secrets. As the body count rises, a teenage girl and her younger brother begin uncovering the horrifying truth behind the murders.

1973’s The Baby is directed by Ted Post (Magnum Force), written by Abe Polsky, and stars Anjanette Comer, Ruth Roman, Marianna Hill, Suzanne Zenor, and David Manzy.

In the psychological horror film, a young social worker becomes increasingly obsessed with a disturbing case involving a grown man who is still treated like an infant by his manipulative family. As she investigates the bizarre household ruled by an overbearing mother and her cruel daughters, she uncovers a web of psychological abuse, exploitation, and deeply buried secrets.

“It’s incredibly exciting to continue building our release slate with films from the libraries of Ignite Films and Eagle Rock Pictures, and in just two short years we’re grateful to have received multiple Saturn Award nominations and wins,” said Ignite’s Jan Willem Bosman Jansen.

Up next from Ignite and Eagle Rock is Bride of Re-Animator, coming to 4K Ultra HD on June 11.

I spent so much of my childhood and early adulthood only knowing of the film’s existence through its name and reputation, and through thousands of incorrectly labeled videos on file sharing sites.

For so many of us born in its aftermath but before its wider availability, John Alan Schwartz‘s film was a ghost, a film so shocking and unreachable that it might never have existed to begin with.

It would be easy now, with cult horror films on streaming services worldwide and clips of real gore and suffering a click away at all times, to feel that the film’s aura has faded. Like Cannibal Holocaust and, to a lesser extent, The Blair Witch Project, Faces of Death has been deconstructed and demystified so much that the original footage might appear now as clinical at best and hokey at worst, but somehow that’s not what’s happened. Faces of Death still retains something of that doomy, mondo reputation, and thanks to a new 4K release from Vinegar Syndrome, it actually feels downright dangerous again.

The new disc, presented in a lovingly crafted package that includes a booklet of essays, a pair of stickers mimicking the film’s original advertising, and more, begins with standard boutique release fare. There’s a new 4K scan of the original negatives, a Blu-ray disc loaded with archival features, a new featurette interviewing fans and followers of the film from around the world, and an archival commentary track.

In typical Vinegar Syndrome fashion, this is all put together with affection, wit, and attention to detail, and if I had one major gripe with it, I’d simply say that I wish more of the features on the Blu-ray had been ported over to the 4K. Still, this is all solid stuff, and if the Faces of Death 4K stopped there, it would make a handsome addition to any collection.

But it doesn’t.

There’s something lurking in this two-disc set that stood out to me not just as interesting additions to the package, but as genuine enhancements to the Faces of Death experience beyond a 4K restoration. That restoration, it should be clear, looks great, and diminishes none of the haunting power of watching a real suicide shot on grainy video or following a handheld camera as it tracks hypnotically around an autopsy table, but it’s not what opened my eyes to what this film can still do as a piece of horror cinema. For that, we have to get into the sound.

You’ve got several options on this Faces of Death 4K, including the default restored soundtrack and a track featuring the original mono audio, bringing the film back to its analog roots in a way that anyone who managed to snag a copy on VHS will appreciate. But there’s also the option of turning all of that off entirely, and playing an audio track that offers nothing but the film’s half-droning, half-whimsical score. I have no idea why this feature is there, but watching Faces of Death again with that option selected, something about it felt flat-out revelatory.

After all, what do we come to Faces of Death for in the first place, when we’re young and hungry horror fans eager to test our limits and push our experiences into the most infamous of genre films? We come to it for the death, of course, and for the way the film blends the staged and the real, the dramatic and the prosaic, to create a montage of morbidity with the goal of overwhelming our senses.

Taking out the dialogue, the voiceover, and the sound effects brings the film back to the core of its impact, allowing you to focus on how it was assembled and paced, what the shots are able to achieve, how some death lingers while other death passes with the flash of a bullet. I expected to rewatch this film on 4K to admire technical specs and analysis from its admirers and students, but instead, I came away riveted by the journey the film takes us on in a way I’d never been before.

This strange, dialogue-free Faces of Death odyssey, when coupled with the film’s many special features and a sometimes jaw-dropping restoration, is enough to reinvigorate this icon of cult cinema in ways that even its reboot could not. It’s a gem for cult horror fans, and even if you think you’ve seen it all, Vinegar Syndrome’s release proves there’s still more to see.

Faces of Death 4K UHD  is now available from Vinegar Syndrome as a website exclusive before releasing wide on May 26.
