Malcolm McDowell (Rob Zombie’s Halloween, A Clockwork Orange) is attached to appear in a new take on H.P. Lovecraft‘s Herbert West: Reanimator, The Telegraph has learned.

Adam Simon (The Haunting in Connecticut, “Salem”) and Tim Metcalfe (The Haunting in Connecticut, Kalifornia) penned the script. It’s set in Alton, Illinois, where filming will take place.

Makeup artist Jeff Lewis (“Star Trek: Voyager,” “Star Trek: Enterprise”) and cousin Roger Lewis are heading the production via their newly established Woodlake Entertainment.

“We are keeping everything based in Alton,” Jeff Lewis said. “We are using the actual name, and a lot of businesses have been mentioned in the script so far.” They also plan on using locals as background actors.

Famously adapted by Stuart Gordon in 1985’s Re-Animator, Lovecraft’s 1922 horror story follows brilliant but mercurial physician Herbert West, whose rabid obsession and pursuit of life extension succeeds to a horrifying effect.

Herbert West: Reanimator is slated to begin production in June. Stay tuned for more.

Back in 2023, James Wan revealed that an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s seminal cosmic horror story The Call of Cthulhu was not only his dream project, but one that he’s been slowly working on for years.

Speaking with ScreenRant, Wan confirmed the film is still in development and is one “I’ve been wanting to do for a while.”

The master of horror noted that the project is facing a major hurdle: Lovecraftian films “are not cheap movies” and are “very hard to try and get them off the ground.”

Nevertheless, Wan concluded by assuring, “I’m just going to keep chipping away at it.”

First published in the February 1928 issue of Weird Tales, The Call of Cthulhu is a harrowing tale of the weakness of the human mind when confronted by powers and intelligences from beyond our world.

Consisting of three interconnected parts, the story is presented as notes belonging to Francis Thurston, a Boston resident investigating the ancient deity Cthulhu.

This isn’t the first time budgetary concerns have prevented a hotly anticipated Lovecraft passion project, as Guillermo del Toro was unable to get his long-gestating At the Mountains of Madness adaptation off the ground.

In one of his final roles, horror icon Tony Todd provided his booming voice for Celephaïs, a short film based on H.P. Lovecraft‘s 1922 story of the same name.

Following an award-winning festival run that kicked off in 2023, the 34-minute film is now available to watch for free online.

It tells the story of a boy who has the most wonderful dream at the age of seven, and then spends 66 miserable years desperately trying to find it again in order to escape his mundane and depressing life.

Blending dark fantasy and horror, Celephaïs deals with familiar Lovecraft themes: desperation, isolation, obsession, dreams, cosmic horror, and, of course, madness.

Michael Neel directs from a script he co-wrote with Joe Lemieux. The pair produce via their Dream Apex Pictures.

Chuck Schwager, Silvia Graziano, Jasper Neel, Judith Kalaora, Kris Salvi, and Cieara O’Brien star.

Celephaïs is also available on Blu-ray starting at $20 through Indiegogo with exclusive special features:

  • Multiple Audio Commentaries
  • Tony Todd: the Voice in the Dark Featurette
  • Visual Effects Featurette
  • Special Effects Featurette
  • Cast Interviews
  • Trailers
  • It’s Me, Ma – 2019 Short by Michael Neel

“We shot this on location in New England, the land that inspired Lovecraft,” said Neel. “We used practical effects, miniatures, and puppets. We’ve created something that we are immensely proud of. We were able to capture one of Tony Todd’s final performances. Most of all, we made the kind of film that we would like to see.”

The Descent‘s subterranean claustrophobia meets Lovecraftian cosmic horror in the trailer for The Deep Dark.

Written and directed by Mathieu Turi (Meander), the French creature feature will be awakened on VOD in the US and UK on March 24 via 4Digital Media.

Set in 1950s France, a team of miners are forced to escort a professor underground in the name of research. But when a landslide prevents them from going back up, they discover a crypt from another time, unknowingly waking a bloodthirsty creature.

Samuel Le Bihan (Brotherhood of the Wolf), Amir El Kacem, Jean-Hugues Anglade (Taking Lives), Thomas Solivérès (The Intouchables), Bruno Sanches, Diego Martín (REC 3: Genesis), Marc Riso, and Philippe Torreton (District 13: Ultimatum) star.

The Deep Dark hit the festival circuit in 2023, playing the likes of Fantastic Fest, Sitges, Screamfest, Toronto After Dark, and FrightFest Glasgow.

“The Deep Dark may not reach the highest highs of other, similar films, but it’s a perfectly adequate way to spend part of an afternoon,” Trace Thurman wrote in his review. “Exemplary creature design and gag-inducing practical effects make up for the the film’s workmanlike quality in other areas.”

Set in the vast world of H.P. Lovecraft, Dreams of a Dead God takes place in 1936 Louisiana following the events of the author’s seminal cosmic horror story The Call of Cthulhu.

The kicker? The 36-minute short film is presented as found footage.

Sanity and reality itself are tested during the interrogation of a murderer with ties to an ancient cult in the trailer below.

Tracking a kidnapper and murderer from France to Louisiana, a young woman and her adopted brother team up with local police and set out into the swamps north of New Orleans. Here the group uncovers much more than they expected, barely succeeding in capturing the fugitive before being forced to flee.

The only surviving record of the event, Dreams of a Dead God is the recovered film recording of the rushed interrogation that occurred shortly after.

“Inspired by the authors appearing in Weird Tales magazine such as Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert Bloch, Dreams of a Dead God represents my own contribution to the cosmic horror mythos,” said writer-director Jim Weter.

Cameron Crawford, Chris Steinmetz, Larshay Watson, Ryan Gilliam, and Jerry Kimble star.

Dreams of a Dead God will have its world premiere at the Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival in Lafayette, LA, on January 24.

Recently adapted into the Joe Lynch film Suitable Flesh, H.P. Lovecraft‘s cosmic horror short story The Thing on the Doorstep is being turned into a comic.

The first issue in the five-part miniseries will be published on February 11, 2026 from Top Crow and Image Comics.

Simon Birks (Antarctica), who previously penned a comic version of Lovecraft’s  The Shadow Over Innsmouth, writes with artwork by Willi Roberts (Antarctica) and lettering from Rob Jones (Hitomi).

The Thing on the Doorstep draws readers into the shadowed labyrinth of friendship warped by forces not meant for human witness. Daniel Upton and Edward Derby have been bound together since youth — until the day Daniel puts a bullet in his closest companion within the bleak walls of Arkham Sanitarium.

Though all evidence damns him, Daniel claims innocence, hinting at horrors that mock reason itself. Within these pages, readers uncover the terrible truth: the birth of a doomed relationship and Edward Derby’s gradual surrender to realms of dread that lie just beyond the fragile veil.

Issue #1 will have four cover variants:

  • Cover A by Willi Roberts
  • Cover B by Lyndon White
  • Cover C 1:10 incentive virgin by Willi Roberts
  • Cover D 1:25 incentive virgin by Lyndon White

“I’m thrilled to bring The Thing on the Doorstep to life with Top Cow and Image Comics,” said Birks. “Lovecraft’s original tale has always fascinated me, and in adapting it, I wanted to explore not only the classic cosmic horror but also the human relationships and psychological tension beneath it. This story delves deeper into the characters and adds a whole new dimension to Lovecraft’s mythos—one that I think both longtime fans and new readers will truly appreciate.”

“Simon Birks has an incredible ability to craft tension and emotion in equal measure. His writing pulls you in and doesn’t let go,” adds Image/Top Cow CEO Marc Silvestri. “We’ve been fans of his storytelling for a long time, and I’m confident readers are going to love what he’s done with The Thing on the Doorstep. It’s haunting, heartfelt, and utterly unforgettable.”

Written in 1933, Lovecraft first published The Thing on the Doorstep in the January 1937 issue of Weird Tales.

Edward Furlong helped save humanity in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and now he has to do it again in Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep.

Based on H.P. Lovecraft‘s 1919 short story “Beyond the Wall of Sleep,” the cosmic horror film hits VOD on March 4 from Breaking Glass Pictures.

It’s the third Lovecraft adaptation from writer-director Chad Ferrin, following 2020’s The Deep Ones and 2024’s The Old Ones.

Renowned oneirologist Ambrose London is summoned to Arkham Asylum to investigate a bizarre split-personality case involving a patient seemingly possessed by a 122-year-old colonial peasant. What begins as a psychological study soon descends into unimaginable terror when London’s Dream Machine unleashes an alien life form intent on world annihilation.

Bai Ling (The Crow), Ginger Lynn (The Devil’s Rejects), Robert Miano (Donnie Brasco), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Steve Railsback (Lifeforce), and Cyril O’Reilly (Porky’s) round out the cast.

“Thrilled to have Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep, the final film in my Lovecraft trilogy, in the hands of Breaking Glass Pictures,” said Ferrin. “I know this boundary-pushing, gonzo film will get the passionate release it deserves from them.”

The film features practical effects by Joe Castro (Campfire Tales, Iron Sky: The Coming Race).

“Beyond the Wall of Sleep” was previously adapted into a 2006 movie featuring Tom Savini.

The horror genre has shown many times over the years that if you take a concept, and subvert the audience’s expectations, you generally have a good chance of people standing up and taking notice. That’s what Assemble Entertainment are looking to do with the recently-released visual text adventure, The Innsmouth Case.

If you’re up on you HP Lovecraft, you know where this is going. Or so you think. You see, rather than your traditional Lovecraftian horror, The Innsmouth Case looks to the lighter side of things. Combining horror and comedy, you play as a detective who is tasked to find a missing child named Tabitha Marsh. Tabitha was last seen in the town of Innsmouth, which just so happens to be filled with your typical Lovecraftian tropes.

And while you can meet your demise numerous times during the game, The Innsmouth Case also utilizes offbeat humour to add levity to the circumstances. That, and the fact that the game features twenty seven different endings that run the gamut should keep you busy. The game is available now on Steam, and with the current Summer Sale, you can snag it for 20% off.

And, if you’re still not sure, you can always try the game’s demo.

Those wondering what’s up with Movie Games Lunarium’s Lust From Beyond, which recently had its Kickstarter campaign open, you’ll be pleased to know that the game has now been fully funded in just 10 hours. Meaning, the sequel to Lust For Darkness is on!

The game, which we told you about back in February, is a sequel to Lust For Darkness, as well as a standalone game. Plus, any game that combines inspiration from Lovecraft, Giger and Beksiński is sure to grab anyone’s attention (for obvious reasons).

The campaign is still going on for another 35 days, so if you’re interested, you can still contribute (and get some sweet backer rewards in the process). Plus, those who contribute get access to an exclusive demo within 24 hours of your donation.

There’s still no release date for the game, but you can keep up with the game’s progress on its Steam page. Also, as you might expect, things aren’t exactly “safe for work” for this game, so be warned.

Picture this: You’re excited about Frogwares’ The Sinking City. You’re also new to horror games (and horror in general), and you don’t get what’s the big deal about HP Lovecraft. What do you do? Luckily, Frogwares have released a new video detailing those new to the Father of Cosmic Horror, and just what makes the author so special.

At four minutes long, you’re not going to get the most in-depth analysis of Lovecraft, or every detail of his life, but it’s a nice intro to Lovecraft’s works. Obviously, the video focuses mainly on the Cthulhu mythos that Lovecraft created, as well as delving into August Derleth’s significance in bringing Lovecraft to the masses. Even if you’re already a longtime fan of Lovecraft, this is still a worthwhile watch.

The Sinking City hits for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on March 21, 2019.

Of course, the trailer itself is laden with quotes from the gaming press who have had a chance to play it, and at the end of it all, encouraging you to pre-order the game. So all in all, mission accomplished? Neil will have a little something to say on the game once it hits October 30th for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Admittedly, when the email came in for Hibernian Workshop’s Dark Devotion, and the first words I saw were “the ‘Dark Souls of 2D Dark Souls‘”, I was skeptical. But, after checking out the first developer diary for the game, I have to say that this action RPG has more to it than just being hard.

Set for release Q1 2019 on Steam, Dark Devotion puts you in the role of a Templar assigned to explore a mysterious fallen temple for your faith. That’s of course an excuse for you to traverse four worlds of richly-detailed and animated 2D sprites, and beat up on enemies in epic battles of fast reflexes and intuition.

Anyways, the dev diary has three members of the team explaining the artists, locations and classic gaming inspirations that inspire Dark Devotion. This includes horror fare such as HP Lovecraft and Castlevania, the former of which ties into the character development with the game’s ‘anti-hero’ protagonist. It has me curious about the game!

As you’ve probably seen from the dev diaries for The Sinking City, the team at Frogwares have taken great lengths to push what they can do. So, to test their city builder tech that they created in Unreal Engine 4, the team decided to put the software to the test by seeing how much of a real city they could recreate in just one working day (which you can see below).

For an internal test of the tech, Frogwares asked fans on social media to vote from a list of iconic cities (Istanbul was the winner). The team would then see how big a district they could recreate within just eight hours using the city builder, buildings that had already been created for The Sinking City, and Google Maps.

Now, this next part may not appeal to everyone, but it’s still pretty cool: Once the game ships, Frogwares are giving their city builder tool away for free for anyone to use. Obviously, there will be some caveats, but how cool is that?!

The Sinking City surfaces on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC March 21, 2019.

Three weeks ago, we finally got a glimpse of the gameplay for Cyanide Studio’s adaptation of Call of Cthulhu. And now, thanks to the wonders of the internet (well, more like the devs allowing previews), we have a full hour of gameplay from the game.

Now, two things: One, this is the beta version of the game (from this past Gamescom, specifically), so things might not be final when the game finally releases on October 30th. Second, while it’s cool and all that we get this preview, we do get commentary by the devs, who are playing the game while answering questions from a chat, so those looking for a gameplay-audio only playthrough are out of luck. We also don’t get to see the questions that were asked, which is also a bummer.

Still, we do get some demonstrations of the gameplay mechanics, including those which Cyanide have been able to adapt from the board game. According to the devs, the main path will take you 12-15 hours to play through, but that’s not including all of the side quests. Then there are all of the choices you make that determine the ending, which are in turn affected by your sanity and phobias. It sounds like a lot of juggling, so hopefully come Halloween, it all comes together.

Thought Frogwares was done with the development update videos for their upcoming Cthulhu mythos game The Sinking City? Not so fast! The latest video focuses on visual storytelling, with the team showing off the tricks they use to bring the visual side of the game to life. Things like using colours to indicate slipping sanity, specific lighting to mess with your head, and the ways a compromise can turn into a much more haunting execution. All of these examples are explained with gameplay footage to show the results.

In case you’re behind on watching these videos, you can check out the playlist showing the rest of them here. The Sinking City heads to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One March 21, 2019.

I can’t be the only one looking forward to Frogwares’ The Sinking City. Obviously not, but I’m just interested in seeing just what kind of weird trailer we get next as the game creeps closer to its March 19th release date. Case in point: This new cinematic trailer, Death May Die, ups the creep factor as the game’s protagonist, Charles W. Reed, is faced with some weird stuff (to put it lightly).

Is it just me, or has the quality gone up when compared to the previous trailers? In addition, seeing as it’s Gamescom, the team have put together a playthrough of the game to give us a sense of what to expect.

The Sinking City is also due out for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

That March 19th, 2019 release date keeps creeping closer for Frogwares’ The Sinking City, and today they’ve released a brand-new teaser showing just how messed up things are in Oakmont, Massachusetts. The game’s protagonist, Charles Reed, can’t even have a shave without things messing with his head. I know if that happened to me, I wouldn’t touch a razor for weeks. I’d also have my head examined, for that matter.

Inspired by Lovecraftian Cthulhu mythos, The Sinking City centres around Charles W. Reed, a private investigator in New England in the 1920s. Tortured by his past and otherworldly visions, he finds himself in Oakmont, Massachusetts, seeking salvation from the creeping insanity that afflicts him. The city of Oakmont, once a trade harbor known for its lucrative smuggling business, now lives in secluded isolation from the rest of the world under a flood of supernatural origins. In this place of decay and superstition; players will have to deal with the dregs of mankind, follow clues they wish they had never found and unveil a cosmic horror threatening the world itself.

We’re still waiting on games like The Sinking City and Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game, but out today is MetaArcade’s Cthulhu Chronicles, which should satisfy those looking to scratch that Lovecraft itch. Plus, seeing as it’s out on iOS (with other platforms in development), you can take it on the go!

Created in partnership with Chaosium, creator of the popular tabletop RPG game, Call of Cthulhu, the video game “distills the essence of the award-winning roleplaying system into a story-driven, intuitive experience designed for mobile gamers”. To celebrate the launch of the game today, there’s a special 10% discount on all scenarios during the launch week.

In Cthulhu Chronicles, players can assume the role of various archetypal investigator characters, such as a policewoman or private detective, to pursue missions involving crazy cults, sinister creatures, and horrors from beyond space. The immersive narrative is accompanied by rich images and evocative ambient soundtrack by Cthulhu contributors Chad Fifer, Cryo Chamber, Graham Plowman, and others.

Unlike many RPGs, the focus in Cthulhu Chronicles isn’t on building up a character through combat. Instead, players choose an appropriate investigator for the mission at hand, with each investigator having their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as individual storylines. At key decision points, players will make choices that matter, as each story has multiple endings and numerous clues to uncover—which in turn unlock new storylines and outcomes as the campaign unfolds.

At launch, the game includes five unique scenarios created with MetaArcade’s proprietary Adventure Creator tool, with four more coming soon. Together, these scenarios comprise the first Cthulhu Chronicles campaign, “Investigations in Lovecraft Country”. Additional campaigns are planned after launch; there will also be an opportunity for the community to create their own Cthulhu Chronicles stories in the future.

Players get five ‘trials’ each day to play any story for free, and can buy stories via in-app purchase to unlock them permanently for unlimited plays.

To find out more about the game, you can hit up MetaArcade’s Facebook page.

Things have been slow going for Cyanide Studio’s Call of Cthulhu. The game’s been in development for a while now, and only just got its website last month. But now, with E3 winding down, the team have released a much-needed lore trailer that adheres pretty pretty close to the original Lovecraft story.

The official synopsis goes like this: “Faced with terrors beyond human comprehension, you must delve deep into the secrets that lay beneath the surface of the Darkwater Island community. Speak with the island’s inhabitants, overcome deadly horrors, and discover cryptic clues, in a desperate attempt to expose the terrible truth at the heart of the Hawkins case.

Multiple paths lay ahead for you to choose from – your development of Pierce’s skills and the relationships you have with other characters will directly impact how you proceed in your investigation. This is no easy task however, as certain events may cause Pierce to develop mental traumas that impact his ability to cope, while the descent into the occult will cause his sanity to rapidly dwindle.”

Call of Cthulhu releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2018.

Last year, Lunar Cult Studios launched a Kickstarter for their first-person Cthulhu-inspired game, Lust For Darkness. Now, not only do we get a new trailer for the game, but we also have a release date!

The gates to Lust’ghaa will be open on June 12 on Steam for the game, which if you need reminder, casts you as protagonist Jonathan Moon. Moon’s wife has been missing for a year, so when he receives a letter from his wife to head to a secluded mansion, he wastes no time in doing so. At the mansion, Moon witnesses an eldritch occult ceremony taking place, where the gates to another world, the profane, perverse land of Lusst’ghaa, are opened.

Using portals to travel between two different realities, the player will not only have to search for clues as to what happened to Moon’s wife, but also avoid the alien creatures of Lusst’ghaa, which over the course of hundreds of years of experiments, have transformed their bodies so that they could never cease to experience carnal delights.

Originally scheduled for Spring 2018, D’Avekki Studios’ FMV Lovecraftian murder mystery The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker is set for June 5th for PlayStation 4, XBox One and the Nintendo Switch (the original version is on Steam, by the way).

For those in need of a refresher, in The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker, you are a psychiatrist tasked with trying to solve a murder whilst treating six patients of the recently deceased Doctor Dekker. Players are given full freedom to question suspects by typing their own questions, or by picking from a predetermined list. The patients also have questions for you, but you’ll have to exercise caution. Your words will determine their eventual fates, and your own!

For those without a keyboard, the game will support touchscreen input on Nintendo Switch, as well as PS4 Second Screen and Xbox app integration for faster free text entry. The game will also have five side-quests, and features over seven hours of FMV footage (which is apparently a Guinness World Record).

Frogwares continue their development on The Sinking City, which is still looking for that definitive 2018 release date. Really, judging from what’s been shown so far, you can’t help but intrigued each time Frogwares releases an update on their progress. And that’s just what they did.

The update video is the first Q&A session in response to user’s questions via social media, where Community Manager Sergey Oganesyan answers a few unknowns. Among the information revealed, The Sinking City plays out “more [like] a detective game”, where players will have to solve crimes as they progress through the game, while at the same time, unraveling the mystery of Oakmont. At the same time, the game also has a combat component where players will be able to use weapons, traps and skills that you unlock in order to combat the Lovecraftian monsters that lurk throughout the game.

As for the game length, Frogwares is “aiming for around 30, maybe 40 hours of playtime”. However, that’s only for the main quest and the majority of side quests. Your playtime will increase “if you’re a completionist or just want to see all the different endings”. As for platforms, The Sinking City will be available for Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4, and the release date and price will be announced “when we are ready”. Oganesyan concludes the session with how the team balanced their own ideas versus established Lovecraftian lore, referring back to their fourth update video for more information.

There’s a lot of goodies in just the three minute video, so do check it out.

The fine folks at Frogwares have released a new update video for their Lovecraftian game, The Sinking City. With GDC (aka the Game Developers Conference) set to start tomorrow, the team have been hard at work polishing up their demo, which is the subject of the update. This will be the first time that the game will be shown to the public, so of course it makes sense to document it.

The video shows the demo’s production process that started way back in November, and the difficulties that the team faced when making the demo. It also discusses the ‘ethical’ dilemma that the team faced when preparing the presentation. In addition, the video also shows off new, never before seen gameplay footage, which if you’re heading to GDC, you’ll be able to experience for yourself.

Still no concrete release date yet, but 2018 is the goal.

After showing off some cool concept art, Frogwares is back with a new update video for their upcoming Cthulhu-mythos game, The Sinking City. In the video, the team discusses Lovecraft and his works (namely the fear of the unknown, desolation, and hopelessness), and how Lovecraft’s stories influence the game’s world. The team also discusses their views on what makes people afraid. There’s also some sprinkling of concept art (in both painting and maquette form), and some prototype footage.

The video does ask some of those existential questions that when you think about it, are pretty frightening if you delve into it the right way. And Frogwares seems to have the right idea with translating that into videogame form. Of course, we won’t know until more of the game is revealed, but there’s definitely potential.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Frogwares in regards to their open world Lovecraft-inspired game, The Sinking City. While they’re still very much working away at the game, Frogwares decided to drop us a line to give us an exclusive look at some of their concept work. The images include a fishing harbour, an underwater monolith, and (because Lovecraft) a portal “that may or may not exist in the physical world” that leads to another realm.

The Sinking City has the player taking on the role of a PI in the 1920s who finds himself in the fictional city of Oakmont, Massachusetts. The city is currently suffering through the fallout from a mysterious flood, and it’s up to the player to discover the origins of said flood. It doesn’t take much for you to realize that the flood’s origins veer into the supernatural.

As well, the team also posted an update video explaining their process in creating Oakmont, including the enlistment of an urban planner to better capture the look and feel of an American city at the turn of the century. Pretty cool stuff.

The Sinking City is set to be released on XBox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Hit them up on Facebook or Twitter for more info on the game.

We’ve mentioned many times before how Lovecraft is an awesome source for videogames. Games like Zeotrope Interactive’s Conarium and Lunar Cult Studios’ Lust For Darkness rely heavily on the Cthulhu mythos. And of course, there are games like Headfirst Productions and Bethesda’s 2005 survival horror FPS Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, which has recently been re-released for PC courtesy of GOG.com.

The game, which was well received by most critics, failed to make an impression with gamers when it was released, and subsequent sequels planned by Headfirst were canned. Nonetheless, the game is still very much worthwhile to check out today. While the game is already available on Steam, as is often the case with older games, there are compatibility issues with modern hardware. However, GOG have gone through the code and fixed things up to allow for modern PCs to run it properly, so no worries there.

As an added bonus, when you buy the game from GOG.com, you also get two of Bethesda’s classic RPGs, The Elder Scrolls: Arena and The Elder Scrolls Chapter II: Daggerfall, for free! Get in on it now.

Death used to be the end…

Six years after he directed The Return of the Living Dead, Dan O’Bannon (Alien) adapted the work of H.P. Lovecraft for 1991 gem The Resurrected. Based on Lovecraft’s “The Case of Charles Dexter Ward,” it was the late O’Bannon’s second and final film as a director, and it’s coming to Blu-ray via Scream Factory.

Detailed over on Facebook today, the Blu-ray will arrive on September 12.

In the film, starring Chris Sarandon, Jane Sibbett and John Terry…

“Since the beginning of time, man has struggled with death. Now Charles Dexter Ward, a wealthy scientist, may have found a way to beat it. Using an ancient diary and human remains, Ward begins a terrifying and bloody pursuit for immortality. By the time his wife Claire hires private investigator John March to halt the horrible experiments, it’s too late … the dead have been resurrected!”

Bonus features are as follows:

Continuing the theme of Lovecraftian-inspired video games from the news of the recently-released Conarium comes Lunar Cult Studios’ Lust For Darkness, which also holds the distinction of being the last Steam Greenlight game to be submitted on the service (which is being replaced by Steam Direct next week).

Inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Lust For Darkness also draws from the paintings of surrealist Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński (have fun!), and throws in some good ol’ eroticism and occult themes for good measure. The story concerns a man named Jonathan Moon, who receives a letter from his wife who has been missing for a year. The message directs him to a secluded mansion where a mysterious ceremony takes place that opens a gateway to the perverse and profane land of Lusst’ghaa.

Throughout the game, players will move between our world and Lusst’ghaa, uncovering more of the mystery to Moon’s wife’s whereabouts, while also delving into the history of Lusst’ghaa and its inhabitants. Speaking of the inhabitants, expect tentacles and some heavy erotic undertones. The concept art (found on the game’s Facebook page) is a combo of Cthulhu and Eyes Wide Shut, which I guess someone will find “interesting”.

No word on when the game will be released.

H.P. Lovecraft is a goldmine for video game properties, whether as inspiration or a direct basis. Add another one to the lineup with Zeotrope Interactive’s new adventure game, Conarium.

Releasing today on Steam and published by Iceberg Interactive, the game takes inspiration from Lovecraft’s famous “At The Mountains of Madness” novella, and follows four scientists and their endeavour to “challenge what we normally consider to be the ‘absolute’ limits of nature.” You play as Frank Gilman, a man who finds himself in Upuaut, an Antarctic base located near the South Pole. The base is deserted, but you soon find out that something has gone very wrong.

Powered by the Unreal Engine 4, Conarium features a deep and suspense-filled story, with tons of secrets and Easter eggs, and a chilling atmospheric soundtrack. Obviously, if you’re keen on learning more about the game, you can check out its website, or visit its Steam page to grab a copy.

The wait for the H.P. Lovecraft-inspired point-and-click survival horror game Asylum has been a long one. Longer than we, or even the talented developers at Senscape, initially anticipated when the game successfully raised nearly $120k on Kickstarter more than three years ago. We still don’t know when the Hanwell Mental Institute will have its grand opening, but until I hear otherwise, I’m going to continue expecting my invitation to arrive before the New Year.

Senscape seems very aware of the almost palpable levels of anticipation for this promising love letter to the ghosts of horror gaming’s past. In a recent update inspired by the makers of Doorways, the studio shared an interactive 360° panoramic window into the first of Hanwell’s 100+ rooms.

As far as I know, this image only works on the Asylum Facebook page — so all you have to do is click on the post below to begin your tour.

Asylum is slated for a release later this year on PC, Mac and Linux.

The E3 reveal trailer for Cyanide’s Lovecraftian nonlinear horror RPG Call of Cthulhu opens with a quote from the legend himself, “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” I’m hopeful that this game will be able to tap into that unknowable, almost primal, and certainly universal fear of the great many things we cannot explain, because it plays an integral role in what’s made Lovecraft’s works so influential and relevant today.

If “searchers after horror haunt strange, far places,” then I can think of no better destination to search for such horrors than the unnervingly atmospheric island of Darkwater. Call of Cthulhu releases next year for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

It’s not much, but the Old Ones did gift us with a couple of new images from the upcoming “RPG-Investigation game with psychological horror and stealth mechanics,” so we can start familiarizing ourselves with Darkwater Island ahead of our adventure.

The Lovecraftian video game curse, if there ever was one, seems to have finally been broken. For a decade, game developers struggled to tell their own stories based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft, from Headfirst’s Call of Cthulhu trilogy, to Guillermo del Toro’s InSANE, and Senscape’s adaptation of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, it gradually became clear to the few of us who were paying attention that the Old Ones didn’t want it to be so.

And sure, you could ignore the obviously sinister force that connects these unfortunate events by placing the blame on the poor sales of Dark Corners of the Earth, the closure of THQ — or GDT’s penchant for prematurely announcing his upcoming projects — or the general lack of interest in most of these games until after they were canned. Yeah, you could do that.

It doesn’t matter now, because at some point last year, the curse dissipated. Some say it dissolved naturally, but my theory is that From Software vanquished it by showing the Elder Gods what a great Lovecraftian horror game can look like with Bloodborne.

Let’s hope these games don’t disappoint, because Cthulhu might blanket our world in endless night if they do.

The horror adventure game Asylum has been delayed enough times to qualify as vaporware, had Senscape not resurfaced in January to confirm it’s 100% guaranteed to arrive this year. I’m going to choose to believe them, because the other option is too depressing a fate to contemplate for a game as promising as this.

The connection Asylum has to the works of H.P. Lovecraft don’t seem to be quite as obvious as the games with Cthulhu or Madness in their titles. It’s more of a thematic tether that marinates the mood and atmosphere in the creeping dread that permeates so many of his works. It also features one of the largest virtual buildings ever created for a video game, with about 100 rooms to explore while you work your way through its ~15 hour story campaign.

Release Date: Summer 2016 (PC)

Unlike the other games on this list, Giant Sparrow’s first-person adventure game What Remains of Edith Finch doesn’t have a singular story to tell — it has many. It’s a collection of short stories from The Unfinished Swan developer Giant Sparrow that revolve around a cursed family in Washington state, as each story focusing on the life and death of a specific member of the family.

With multiple perspectives and a timeline that spans an entire century — one story takes place in the 1900s, another in the present day — Edith Finch is a narratively ambitious game that explores the “vast and unknowable world around us.”

Release Date: Fall 2016 (PS4)

Moons of Madness is a first-person psychological horror game that promises to take a hard science fiction approach to its outer space setting. It’s being developed by the casual mobile game developer Rock Pocket Games, which recently confirmed it’ll have little “in common with SOMA, even less with Alien and even less with Doom.” I wonder what games, if any, it does have something in common with?

Release Date: TBA 2016 (PC, Linux)

In terms of scale, The Sinking City from Sherlock Holmes developer Frogwares is one of the grandest. Set in 1920s New England, this open-world horror game follows a private investigator who’s been tasked with finding out why the city of Oakmont, Massachusetts is gradually succumbing to an almost supernatural flooding. Solving the mystery that’s consuming the city may be the only way to save it from descending into madness. That, or arm floaties.

Release Date: Fall 2016 (PC, PS4, XBO)

LovecraftBD_3

The Call of Cthulhu name brings up a mixed bag of feels. It conjures memories of late-night playthroughs of Dark Corners of the Earth, as well as the wave of disappointment that came when its sequels were canned.

The studio that’s bringing Call of Cthulhu back for an official video game adaptation of Chaosium’s pen & paper RPG is Cyanide Studios (Blood Bowl, Styx) and their collaborative partner Focus Home Interactive. And this time, the Elder Gods tomfoolery will mix elements from RPGs, psychological horror, stealth, and investigation games. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until 2017 to partake in it.

Release Date: TBA 2017 (PC, PS4, XBO)

The considerable hype that surrounds this game has come almost exclusively from public showings, including a recent direct-feed capture at GDC last month, so there’s a reason for it. We’ll know for sure when the game hits the Oculus store on June 6.

Frogwares still has a Lovecraftian horror game in the works, and they’re calling it The Sinking City.

The game promises to bring the Sherlock Holmes developer’s penchant for investigating things to the exciting and often unpredictable realm of open-world horror. Frogwares isn’t ready to share a release window or which platforms it’ll come to — it was previously announced for PC, PS4 and Xbox One — but they’re confident it’ll be “bigger than what we’ve ever made.”

Set in Massachusetts in the 1920s, The Sinking City follows a private investigator as he works to uncover the source of a seemingly supernatural flooding before it consumes the city.

Norwegian developer Rock Pocket Games has announced their next project, and it’s going to be quite the departure from the colorful, family-friendly mobile titles you probably didn’t know they’ve been churning out since 2008.

With the help of a 500k kr (about $60k) government grant, the studio is looking to combine two of my favorite things — the timeless works of H.P. Lovecraft and the impossibly huge and mostly empty void that surrounds this rock we call home — in a first-person psychological horror game based in hard science fiction called Moons of Madness.

The game’s reveal trailer brings up the appropriate number of questions, as does the curious way in which its developer describes it. According to Rock Pocket, it “has not much in common with SOMA, even less with Alien and even less with Doom.”

So, yeah.

Hey, you. Yeah, you. You like horror games? Sure, sure, me too. I’m sure you remember February, and how it was a darn fine month for us horror fans. It gifted us with Dying Light: The Following, The Town of Light and Layers of Fear, among a handful of other memorable titles. That was lovely, but you know about March, right? Well, it’s here, and it’s going to be even better.

Here, let me prove it to you.

Heavy Rain

I was surprised when I realized it’s been five years since the interactive thriller Heavy Rain released on the PS3, but it’s true. It’s also true that every one of us is creeping ever closer to our inevitable deaths, and that’s a horrifying aspect of life that gets explored in by this very game.

As of today, you can also get Quantic Dreams’ other cinematic movie-game, Beyond: Two Souls, with the Heavy Rain & Beyond: Two Souls Collection. It wasn’t as well-received, but it does star the reliable talents of Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe.

Release Date: March 1 (PS4)

Mortal Kombat XL

Mortal Kombat XL is the bigger, more badass edition of the game that outsold everything in 2015, I assume, because I said it’s “a lot of fun” in my review. Master wordsmith over here.

The XL bit means it comes bundled with every character that’s currently available in the base game and as DLC — Jason Voorhees, Predator, Tremor, Tanya, and their respective alternate costumes — along with a handful of brand new additions to the fighting roster, including Bo’Rai Cho, Triborg, Leatherface and a Xenomorph.

In addition to all that, you’ll get the Apocalypse Skin Pack, all available DLC packs and the option to download the Medieval Skin Pack and Pit Stage for free. Good luck leaving your house.

Release Date: March 1 (PS4, XBO)

UnderDread

I’ll admit this one snuck up on me. It happens. If you’re not familiar with it either, I’d very much like to introduce you to a first-person horror game set in the early 18th century called UnderDread. The game follows a man whose daughter goes missing, forcing him to travel to an ancient castle that’s somehow linked to the disappearances of local children.

Release Date: March 1 (PC)

Kholat

Developer IMGN.PRO’s psychological horror game Kholat has been simmering on Steam since last June, and now it’s just about ready to make its way to the PS4. Inspired by the deeply troubling tragedy that claimed the lives of nine men and women whose bodies were found on the slopes of the slopes of Kholat Syakhl, or “Dead Mountain”, in the Ural mountain range in 1959, Kholat benefits from some genuinely unnerving source material.

It’s also narrated by the one and only Sean Bean. Winter is coming.

Release Date: March 8 (PS4)

The Guest

Let’s move away from ports and bundles for a hot sec to talk about an original horror game called The Guest. Set in the 80’s, this “gloomy adventure” game locks you in a hotel room so it can break you with challenging puzzles, riddles and a general sense of unease. This isn’t a traditional horror game, but it does seem like the sort of experience that could get under your skin.

In related news, its demo is scheduled to go live on Steam tomorrow.

Release Date: March 10 (PC)

Moving Hazard

Illfonic quietly announced a release date for their multiplayer horror game Moving Hazard earlier this week, a squad-based shooter set after an apocalyptic event has killed off most of humanity, leaving what’s left of us to fight over the planet’s scarce life-sustaining resources.

In doing so, we’ve come up with a way to enlist the undead hordes, weaponizing them in a war for survival. Illfonic is planning on keeping Moving Hazard on Steam Early Access until the end of the summer so they can make it “look and play like a big AAA shooter game.” according to a post on its Steam page. This will allow them to develop it using feedback from the community.

Release Date: March 10 (PC)

Doorways: Holy Mountains of Flesh – Chapter 2

When Doorways: Holy Mountains of Flesh released on Steam in August, it was broken up into three chapters. The game’s second chapter, The Mansion, will be added to the main game later this month.

Release Date: March 17 (PC)

At the Mountains of Madness

The first in a new wave of Lovecraftian horror games is almost here, and I sincerely hope they don’t meet the same fate as Guillermo del Toro’s InSANE, or those two Dark Corners of the Earth sequels we never got. Whatever happens, you can find me at the Mountains of Madness.

Release Date: March 25 (Steam Early Access)

Resident Evil 6

A week ago, Capcom unveiled their plans to bring Resident Evil 6 and its two predecessors to the PS4 and Xbox One in the opposite order of their initial release — meaning the best of them, Resident Evil 4, won’t get here until the fall — because they’ve developed a taste for our salty tears.

Release Date: March 29 (PS4, XBO)

The Walking Dead: Michonne – Ep 2: Give No Shelter

Telltale’s spin-off series The Walking Dead: Michonne continues this month, and you can bet it’ll bring buckets of gore with a side of feels. Also, Samira Wiley is the best.

Release Date: March 29 (PC, PS3, PS4, 360, XBO, iOS, Android)

Crowdfunding Campaigns

That’s it for the new releases, now it’s onto what’s new in crowdfunding. We’ll begin with the first-person psychological thriller The Works of Mercy, in which a serial killer will pull the ultimate prank phone call by having you lure strippers to your home for sexy murder.

This game looks delightfully twisted, and with more than two weeks left to raise the remaining $2,000, I already have my script memorized and a local sex-line on speed dial.

If The Works of Mercy gives you a tingly sensation, you can support it on Kickstarter.

The second game I’d like to tell you about may also be one of the most ambitious horror games I’ve seen in some time. Every game I’ve listed above wants to tell you a story, but the asymmetrical multiplayer horror game Kaiden is more interested in seeing what you can come up with.

The horrors in Kaidan are community driven. This means anyone with some free time and a macabre imagination can become a storyteller by submitting a tale of terror so it can be transformed into a horror game within a game. This, my friends, is what super cool industry insiders such as myself refer to as Spookygameception.

It’s a nightmarish twist on the idea that’s worked before in games like LittleBigPlanet and Project Spark, which both rely almost exclusively on content that’s been curated by the community. A number of things will need to come together for this to work, including an active community — a rarity among horror games — that produces and promotes a steady stream of content that its “Kaiden System” will then have to successfully transcribe into an effective horror game. That’s a lot.

If it works, this could be huge. But first, it’ll need $75k from us. My fingers are crossed.

Video games based on or inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft have had a difficult time getting made. From the two cancelled sequels to Dark Corners of the Earth to Guillermo del Toro’s InSANE trilogy and Senscape’s Asylum — which might still see the light of day — it’s almost certainly an ancient curse that’s keeping developers from bringing the Old Ones to gaming.

When a brand new Call of Cthulhu game was announced two years ago, it seemed as if the curse might finally be broken. Then, perhaps unsurprisingly, it disappeared, only to resurface last December with some concept art and a message from Frogwares, saying “After long silent, some pics of our Lovecraft game. And for those who are wondering, all is ok: The stars are right.”

Call of Cthulhu appears to be back on track, with a planned release on PC and consoles in 2017. The “RPG-Investigation game with psychological horror and stealth mechanics” is coming from Blood Bowl developer Cyanide Studios.

“We are happy that Focus entrusted us with the development of a videogame adaptation of the legendary RPG Call of Cthulhu,” said Cyanide CEO Patrick Pligersdorffer. “As long-time fans of the license, working with longtime partner publisher Focus Home Interactive on such an original and exciting project is, once again, a privilege. We hope to offer fans the game they’ve long been waiting for.”

If that title made you cringe, just be glad I didn’t go with either of my first choices, which would’ve gone something like Mmm, This Horror MMORPG Tastes Like Cthulhu or Ph’ngluiae R’lyeh mglw’naph Cthulhu wah’naghj fhtagnaph.

One developer has decided it’s a smart idea to lure Cthulhu out of whatever distant Hell realm he usually resides in so they could drop him ever so gently into the realm of MMORPGs. The result is a horror MMO powered by CryEngine 2 called Monria. It’s both free-to-play and gives you the opportunity to turn your in-game earnings into real money, if you’re into that. Get familiar with it after the jump.

If teaming up with some friends to take down Cthulhu sounds like a good time, you can play it here. Monria is currently seeking distribution on Steam, you can help it out by gifting it with a vote on Steam Greenlight.

You may remember I.N.J. Culbard as the artist for Veritgo’s “New Deadwardians” (my favorite book from last year). Culbard has been working away on a graphic novel adaptation of the classic H.P. Lovecraft tale, The Shadow Out Of Time. For those of you not so well-versed in Lovecraft lore, the story follows Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee, who suffers from fainting spells in 1908, only to regain his senses in 1913. The more he tries to understand those missing five years of his life, the more wild and disturbing his dreams become.

The book is set for release on June 13th from SelfMadeHero.
