The ten-episode anthology series will introduce a new generation of filmmakers and is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Tubi this Fall in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

From executive producer Peter Rice and GJMD Studio, the series brings a fresh take on the short-form horror format to Tubi that was previously explored in Hulu’s “Bite Size Halloween.”

Each episode will feature a new story, ranging from occult to body horror, dark comedy, monsters, and the macabre.

“Our horror shorts have become an extraordinary engine for discovering new writer-directors, 90 shorts, nine first features, and counting,” said Executive Producer Peter Rice. “We’re thrilled to partner with Tubi to introduce the next generation of horror filmmakers, with BITE SIZE TERROR on Tubi.”

• THE DEEP END: A babysitter reluctantly times a child’s underwater trick in the deep end of a backyard pool, only to realize something is wrong when he resurfaces silent, unblinking, and not quite himself. The film stars Jessi Mechler (“Boyhood”) and Beau Foxx (The Pitt), and is written and directed by J. Zachary Thurman (“The Demon Core”).
• MARISOL: At her older sister’s funeral, a grieving teenage girl defies a taboo passed down through her family in hopes of reaching the dead, only to discover that the voice calling back may not belong to her sister at all. The film stars Jessie Mae Alonzo (Everything Now), Lourdes Faberes (Avatar: The Last Airbender), and Kim Adis (Get Even), and is written by Jed Shepherd (“Host”) and directed by Jill Sachs (“Taga”).
• KACHINA: A rental makeover influencer and home décor stylist hired to transform a desert home into a post-worthy stay disrespects the owner’s sacred family doll-turning her picture-perfect redesign into a blood-soaked reckoning. The film stars Chloe Ray (Fuller House), the puppeteer talents of Benjamin Michael Bayouth (Diabolical), and Dillon Wolf Oleata (Blark and Son), and is written and directed by Boise Esquerra (“The Black Demon”).
• RESONANCE: While clearing out her late father’s house during a storm, a grieving woman discovers his final experiment: a signal spreading through water that turns the exposed into vessels for something inhuman. The film stars Glenda MacInnis (Boston Blue), Andy McQueen (Paradise), the voice talents of Charles Halford (Outer Banks), and is written and directed by Mark Lammerding (“The Night Within”).
• MOTHER MARROW: When a young couple discovers an old matchmaking card game inside their rental RV, every question forces a darker confession, until they realize the game is testing whether their love deserves to survive. The film stars Haley Gauthier (“Behind Door Two”), Eric Palmer (“Harvester”), and Marquel Skinner (Young Rock), and is written by Jake and Conor Lawler (The Lawler Brothers) (“One of Them Days”) and is directed by Charlie Schwan (“Harvester”).
• SUCKER: After a broke motel clerk is bitten by a bat, her petty scams turn bloodier when a guest with a valuable antique reveals a bigger world of valuables, victims, and opportunity. • MARISSA’S OFFICE: After years as the perfect assistant to a powerful magazine editor with a taste for ambitious young women, Beth weaponizes her own body to claim the promotion she has already paid for in blood. • BOOK CLUB: A painfully polite woman joins an aspirational book club, only to discover its sadistic initiation will continue until she finally learns to say no. • COME HOME: A lonely boy searches the city for offerings to feed the creature hidden in his apartment, desperate for the fleeting moments after each sacrifice when the monster gives him back something that feels like home. The film stars Felix Paz, Minos Nevradakis, and Malina Manovici (“Graduation”), and is co-written by Mateo Braun Costa, Eduardo Braun Costa, and directed by Eduardo Braun Costa (“The Liars”).
• FLORAL REMAINS: After returning to her late mother’s macabre flower shop, where the dead are preserved in bloom, a grieving daughter demands one final message from the dead and discovers some goodbyes are better left buried. The film stars Courtney Taylor (Abbott Elementary), Jamela Asha (I Love LA), and Susan Louise O’Connor (The Cleaning Lady), and is written and directed by Jasmine J. Johnson (“Inner Demons”).

Bloody Tennis makes its debut on Shudder on September 25.

Watch the full trailer below that sees students engaging in Raw-like initiation rituals that grow increasingly more deranged. There are far more leeches than expected at a sports academy.

The film follows “Sophie (Guldberg Kampp), an American tennis player who earns a spot at an elite academy hidden away in Southern Europe. Beneath the pristine courts and promise of athletic excellence lies an isolated, cult-like environment where ruthless competition and extreme discipline come at a dangerous cost. The film uses the contrast between tennis’s elegance and brutality to explore the darker side of achievement culture and what happens when the pressure to succeed pushes young athletes beyond their limits.“

The cast also includes Helena Zengel (The Legend of Ochi), Lucie Zhang (Paris, 13th District), Lily Taieb (The French Dispatch), Tracy Gotoas, Elina Löwensohn (Schindler’s List), and Zlatko Burić (Triangle of Sadness), with an original score from Jim Williams (Titane, Raw, Possessor).

Bloody Tennis marks the English-language debut of Greek-German filmmaker Nikias Chryssos (Der Bunker).

The liminal horror movie will debut exclusively on HBO Max in the U.S. on September 25. The film will debut on HBO linear on September 26 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Chiwetel Ejiofor stars in Backrooms as the owner of Cap’n Clark’s Ottoman Empire, who discovers a strange doorway in the basement of the furniture showroom. He sets out to explore the mysterious, liminal space, walking headfirst into a creepypasta nightmare.

Renate Reinsve (A Different Man), Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell also star in Backrooms.

Will Soodik wrote the screenplay, based on Parsons’ creepypasta-inspired video series, which debuted in 2022 and has amassed over 190 million views to date. 

I wrote in my review, “Backrooms is at once complex and sparse, but never repetitive. It might be set in 1990, but it effectively captures modern anxieties and isolation in a way that frequently makes your skin crawl. While the journey ultimately loses steam by its cryptic end, Parsons’ visual representation of the human psyche disturbs like no other.”

While MGM+ hasn’t revealed an exact premiere date yet, season two will include eight episodes. 

In season one, “Teen genius Luke Ellis is kidnapped and awakens at The Institute, a facility full of children who all got there the same way he did and who are all possessed of unusual abilities. In a nearby town, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson has come looking to start a new life, but the peace and quiet won’t last, as his story and Luke’s are destined to collide.”

Season two will pick up after the season one finale, in which the survivors discovered similar facilities all over the world. 

“Set free but hunted, new dangers await the escapees from the Institute, and I can’t wait,” said Stephen King of the renewal.

The series hails from director/executive producer Jack Bender (From, Mr. Mercedes), writer/executive producer Benjamin Cavell (Justified, The Stand), and MGM+ Studios. Both filmmakers are no strangers to the world of Stephen King.

Mary-Louise Parker (Ms. Sigsby), Ben Barnes (Tim Jamieson), Joe Freeman (Luke Ellis), Simone Miller (Kalisha), Fionn Laird (Nick), Hannah Galway (Wendy), Julian Richings (Stackhouse), Robert Joy (Dr. Hendricks), and Martin Roach (Chief Ashworth) star, with Alfie Allen (“Game of Thrones,” The Predator) joining the second season.

The series follows single mother Pam Voorhees who has been unable to shake her grief after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake almost a year before. When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events is set into motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: just who is Pam Voorhees?

Brad Caleb Kane (“IT: Welcome to Derry”) is the showrunner for the series.

Don’t expect a straightforward slasher, though. Kane previously said, “You watch the first four episodes, and you go ‘Okay. They are telling a story, and there’s a little bit of paranoid conspiracy thriller here, and it’s a psychological devolution or evolution, however you want to put it; but where’s Friday the 13th‘?” Pam goes full Friday the 13th in this season, and you will see it.”

Linda Cardellini stars as Pamela Voorhees, a mother who gave up a singing career to raise her special needs child, only to take a dark turn when she loses her son — Jason.

Callum Vinson (“God of War,” “Chucky”) is playing young Jason.

The show’s cast also includes William Catlett (Abigail), Cameron Scoggins (“Nashville”), Devin Kessler (“Godfather of Harlem”), Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Nick Cordileone (“Warrior”), Joy Suprano (“Fleishman Is in Trouble”), Danielle Kotch (Sinister), Christopher Denham (“Shining Girls”), Nancy Nagrant (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), and Phoenix Parnevik.

Variety reports that Caroline Kepnes will write and direct the short-form series based on her own 2022 short story by the same name, which first appeared in Tor Nightfire’s horror anthology Dark Stars.

The series is set to launch on YouTube as part of a significant slate to be announced in the coming days.

The Attentionist is set in a ’90s Cape Cod neighborhood where working locals live year-round alongside part-time summer tourists and residents.

The eight-episode first season will follow “an awkward 14-year-old named Maeve and her older sister. As the girls ache for a way into the glittering world of the waterfront elite, a secret phone romance with a boy from the local boat club finally makes that dream feel possible. But when the voice on the line begins to reveal something monstrous, Maeve doesn’t hang up, drawing her family deeper into the dark.“

“Sometimes it feels like a lakeside slasher, and sometimes it feels like a boy-meets-girl oceanside summer romance,” Kepnes told Variety. “I wrote ‘The Attentionist’ as a mashup of genres and being at the helm of the adaptation is quite literally a dream come true. I wanted to combine my love of emotional creepy horror with my affection for small town family drama, and set it in the veiled, insular world of the Cape where I grew up.”

The project will shoot on location in Kepnes’ native Cape Cod, and casting is currently underway.

I was already expecting the film to be a good time, especially since Alex DiVincenzo praised it as an experience that “subverts expectations and turns conventions on their head throughout”, but nothing could have prepared me for the fact that this highly atmospheric genre romp feels so much like a tribute to some of my favorite Survival Horror games.

From the moody Oregon wilderness that permeates the entire experience to the mysterious small town with idiosyncratic residents who all seem to harbor their own dark secrets, and that’s not even mentioning the Dostoyevskyan exploration of guilt and morality that culminates in an inevitable conclusion, Alma & the Wolf feels like the spooky love child of Silent Hill 2 and Twin Peaks – with a dash of Alan Wake thrown in for good measure.

The final act even has horrific monsters that our traumatized protagonist has to mow down as he continues to search for the truth behind his son’s disappearance.

Obviously, Jann’s film is by no means an adaptation, with the story apparently being inspired by the process through which a person might go mad after being forced to confront the narratives that sustain their life. However, even if these similarities are coincidental, I’d still recommend this strange blend of folk, psychological, and even body horror to fans of the interactive genre classics of yesteryear.

Just be sure to watch until the very end if you really want to understand what’s going on, as the bizarre imagery and nightmare logic here actually lead to a less introspective finale than you might have initially expected.

Yost was announced in April to pen the new live-action series adaptation of Matt Dinniman‘s comedic, dystopian science fantasy LitRPG books. In June, Peacock gave a straight-to-series order.

In the upcoming series, an alien invasion has wiped out most of humanity, and any survivors are forced to fight for their lives on a sadistic intergalactic game show. Sounds bad, right? Now try doing it with bare feet and a stuck-up, self-centered, tiara-wearing talking cat as your partner.

Welcome to Dungeon Crawler World: Earth, where Coast Guard vet Carl finds himself stuck with his ex-girlfriend’s award-winning show cat, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk, as they try to survive the end of the world, fighting monsters, aliens, an insane A.I. and even other survivors — all for the sake of good TV.

Jeff Hays, a voice narrator and producer behind the LitRPG audiobook series version of Dinniman’s dystopian comedy novel, will star as the popular cat character Princess Donut.

Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins will executive produce via Fuzzy Door alongside Yost and Dinniman. Rachel Hargreaves-Heald will serve as executive in charge of production for Fuzzy Door.

Dungeon Crawler Carl book was originally self-published by Dinniman in 2020, making this new series a wild capper to the LitRPG’s seven-year journey.

Expect to hear more as further casting gets underway.

The animation for “Bass x Machina” will be done by South Korea’s Studio Mir. The series will also feature original music by Roman GianArthur and Nate Wonder at Wondaland.

Bass X Machina joins Netflix’s substantial animation slate, which includes Emmy-winning “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” and “Devil May Cry.”

The actor was first reported to be in talks to take over the role from Ryan Hurst, who suffered a torn bicep during production that forced a recast and would’ve delayed production to 2027.

Prime Video gave its God of War series a two-season order, with the two seasons to film back-to-back. Filming originally began in Vancouver back in February and is expected to resume in the coming weeks.

All scenes featuring Hurst will have to be reshot.

It’s a brutal setback for both Hurst and production, but Bautista is well suited for the role.

The series follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

Callum Vinson (Crystal Lake, Chucky) stars as Atreus, Kratos’ young son.

The cast also includes Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride) as Odin, Ed Skrein (Deadpool) as Baldur, Max Parker (“Vampire Academy”) as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (“NOS4A2”) as Thor, Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) as Sif, Alastair Duncan (God of War) as Mimir, Jeff Gulka (“The X-Files”) as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn (“The Witcher”) as Brok.

Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) serves as showrunner and writer. Frederick E.O. Toye (Fallout, Watchmen, The Boys) will direct the first two episodes.

The series received a straight-to-series order late last year, after an intense bidding war back in September.

Pagans follows a man who becomes the sole caretaker of his two children after the tragic loss of his wife. While his son is typical, his daughter, Alice, is anything but. What starts as a strained father-daughter relationship soon evolves into something far more sinister.

Yeun plays the single father struggling to raise two kids alone following his wife’s death.

It’s described as “equal parts emotional, horrifying and humorous; Pagans is a show that unearths all our darkest thoughts about family.”

Showrunner Joshua Zetumer, Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods), Sarah Esberg, Jonathan van Tulleken, and Erica Kay executive produce.

Molly Ringwald and June Squibb are joining the cast in Season 4.

Yellowjackets is the saga of a team of high school soccer players who become the survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later.

Co-Showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson created the series, which is produced by Lionsgate Television. 

In the closing moments of season three, Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) finally is able to make contact with the civilized world via satellite phone, teeing up the final season. 

As the announcement video warns, it’ll be the final reckoning for the Yellowjackets.

Deathwoods begins streaming exclusively on Screambox on September 1.

Decades after a gruesome murder-suicide involving the Wallace family gave rise to disturbing local legends, the forest remains haunted by stories of a grotesque figure lurking deep within the trees. In the present day, Scott’s friends Kyle and Jessica plan a weekend camping trip to help him recover from a painful breakup by introducing him to Jessica’s friend Michelle.

What begins as an attempt to reconnect and escape everyday life soon spirals into terror as the group realizes the legend haunting the woods may be real. As paranoia, isolation, and violence escalate, the friends are forced into a desperate struggle to survive the horrors hidden within Deathwoods.

Jake Kopronica and Deryk Wehrley co-direct from a script Kopronica co-wrote with Deathwoods‘ creator Scott Conner.

Starring in the upcoming horror movie are Anthony Dain, KateLynn E. Newberry, MacKenzie Lee, Kellan Jackson, with Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp, Terrifier 2) and introducing Miles Dimitri Baker.

If this weekend’s new release has you itching for more dinosaur chaos, here are five films you can stream this weekend that ensure the prehistoric movie monsters get the spotlight.

65 – Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video

A high concept sci-fi effort from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the writers behind A Quiet Place and writers/directors of Haunt. Adam Driver and Ariana Greenblatt star as the unlucky pair that find themselves on a hostile planet filled with creatures and obstacles. Driver takes his role seriously in this straightforward, polished sci-fi adventure filled with dinosaur mayhem. The resurgence of quicksand as a lethal trap, early dinosaur encounters, and a gruesome nighttime parasite provide prehistory fun.

 The Dinosaur Project – Fawesome

This 2012 found footage feature follows adventurers searching for the legendary cryptid Mokele-mbembe deep in the Congo. Naturally, they run afoul of some carnivorous beasts from another era instead. It’s the dinosaurs that set this otherwise standard found footage film apart, complete with shaky camerawork. And it’s the dinos that get priority treatment with solid VFX. While The Dinosaur Project doesn’t reinvent the wheel, the dinos deliver.

Loop Track – Fandango, Prime Video, Tubi

I realize even including this underrated 2023 gem on this list reveals one of its biggest surprises, but it’s worth it if it means getting more eyes on one of the more recent genre surprises. Writer- Director Thomas Sainsbury also stars as Ian, a nervous antisocial type who sets off on a 4-day hiking trek into the New Zealand bush, just to avoid people. While there, though, he quickly turns to other campers with the sneaking suspicion that something is stalking them all. Sainsbury goes full throttle on psychological torment and turmoil, coaxing out a slow-burn until a full-throttle third act. That means that, for prehistoric animal lovers, the payoff is worth the wait.

Primitive War – Disney+, Hoopla, Hulu, Kanopy

Writer/Director Luke Sparke adapts author Ethan Pettus‘ novel about a recon squad’s discovery of rampaging dinos during the Vietnam War, starring Ryan Kwanten and Tricia Helfer. Primitive War, despite its B-movie setup, takes its dinosaurs and soldiers as seriously as its action. The action horror movie already has a sequel in the works, with Sparke promising to escalate the budding war between prehistoric beasts and the military. Its sequel will pit dinos against cowboys.

Tammy and the T-Rex – Kanopy, Midnight Pulp, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, Screambox, Tubi 

An unbelievable “how did this get made?” crowd-pleaser from beginning to end, Tammy and the T-Rex defies the boundaries of realism at every possible turn, including the opening credits that refer to the movie as “Tanny” and the T-Rex. After a bizarre accident, high school football player Michael (Paul Walker) is murdered, and his brain is transplanted into a mechanical dinosaur. He escapes, the body count rises, and he reunites with his girlfriend Tammy (Denise Richards). Passenger begins streaming exclusively on Paramount+ on August 20.

In the supernatural road trip movie, “A few weeks into their van life adventure, a young couple witnesses a horrific accident that leaves the driver dead. Soon they’re being pursued by a demonic stalker who’s impossible to outrun and follows them wherever they go.”

Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life), Lou Llobell (“Foundation”), Melissa Leo (The Fighter), and Joseph Lopez (Insidious: Out of the Further) star.

The screenplay is written by Zachary Donohue (The Den) and T.W. Burgess (Mister Howl). It screenwriter Gary Dauberman produced via Coin Operated. Walter Hamada also produced.

André Øvredal previously told Bloody Disgusting, “It’s a road movie, which is what I really fell in love with. It’s totally unique for me as a horror movie. Bridging the road movie with a haunting, essentially, on the road.” That meant filming on the road, taking production to some suitable eerie locations for their road trip nightmare.

Passenger faced fierce competition at the box office upon release on May 22, caught directly between 2026 smash hits Obsession and Backrooms.

Now it finally heads home.

The demonic horror movie begins streaming on Screambox on August 18.

Yellow Eyes is directed by Jesse Korman and written by Mickey Solis.

In the film, “After inheriting his late uncle’s deteriorating home, Brad and his wife Julia discover an ancient demonic idol concealed within its walls. What initially appears to be a strange and potentially valuable artifact soon exerts a seductive influence over Brad, transforming his behavior as his eyes turn an unnatural yellow and a mysterious black oil begins to appear.

“As the idol’s influence spreads to those around them, Julia searches desperately for an explanation, only to discover that her husband is becoming the host for an ancient entity that feeds on humanity’s darkest desires. With Brad slipping further away, Julia must fight to save the man she loves and stop an insatiable evil that turns desire into addiction and demands blood to survive.”

Nena Martins, Michael Kunicki, Jimmy Chung, Margo O’Connell, and DeVaughn Loman star.

The horror movie is produced by Joe Swanberg and Ben Gojer.

Hallowarrior debuts on October 16.

Hereditary‘s Milly Shapiro stars as Pumpkin, the last girl on earth and sole survivor of a humanity-ending plague, scavenging the wasteland for supplies on the eve of Halloween.

Pumpkin’s lonely holiday ritual is interrupted by the arrival of a savage gang of raiders at her doorstep. Outnumbered and armed with candy, wit, and weapons, Pumpkin must ferociously fight back to survive the night.

Ajani Russell (“Betty”), AJ Bowen (You’re Next), and Shannyn Sossamon (Sinister 2) round out the cast.

Writer-director Ben Sottak makes his feature directorial debut on the project, based on his 2021 short Scavenger.

“Hallowarrior is a love letter to horror and Halloween, and I am thrilled that the film has found its home with a distributor whose brand is synonymous with both,” said Sottak. “It’s an honor to have Hallowarrior join the Shudder family, and a treat to introduce their audience to this fun, scary, gory film along with its badass lead, Pumpkin, played by the incredible Milly Shapiro.”

The upcoming eight-episode series is created by Quinn Shephard and set to premiere on Netflix on November 11.

The Body follows ” a group of badly behaved Catholic school girls who begin having prophetic visions that set off mass hysteria in their town after a dance-team initiation goes wrong.”

“I’ve always been interested in the idea of girlhood as a religious experience. This story is definitely my way of putting a playful spin on all the nightmares of my own teenage-dom. Tonally, I would describe the show as gritty camp. It’s a raunchy teen psychodrama with a dash of Catholic horror,” Shephard says.

Kristina Bogic (Anya Butler), Sara Boustany (Elise Zakaria), Geena Meszaros (Lisbeth Anderson), Nnamdi Asomugha (Father Franklin), Louisa Krause (Catherine Anderson), Shirley Chen (Maddie Delaney), Jackson Kelly (Leo Anderson), Sofia Wylie (Grace Franklin), with Gabby Windey (Coach Miller) star.

Shephard calls the series “a love letter to all the ’90s and Y2K teen movies and erotic thrillers” she loved growing up. “Movies like Carrie, Jennifer’s Body, Heavenly Creatures, and even Mean Girls [are all inspirations], but with a grounded lens,” she says. “I was also a teen with an embarrassingly intense fixation on The Crucible and the Salem witch trials. It’s been very interesting to revisit that with the shading of our current political climate!”

Of course, the truth is that a movie’s overall quality depends more on who’s making it than whether or not it’s based on an existing idea, and that’s why I wasn’t so quick to judge when I heard that the popular found footage movie Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum was getting another re-imagining (the film has also been remade in Indonesia as Haunted Korean Hospital) in the form of Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital, that was quietly added to Netflix late last year.

A Philippine production set in Taiwan, writer-director Kerin Go’s latest film is less of a retread of Gonjiam’s localized thrills and more of an original found footage experience that just so happens to borrow elements from the South Korean original. In fact, Strange Frequencies isn’t a remake at all, with the film’s own characters referencing Gonjiam as a kick-ass horror film and the leader of the group even admitting that he got the idea for the team’s elaborate camera harnesses from Jung Bum-shik’s 2018 hit.

That’s why I think it’s worth comparing both of these pictures, as it says a lot about Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum that the feature is so well-suited for international remakes – especially when these productions turn out to be surprisingly entertaining homages with their own unique spin on the same premise.

The first major element that stands out when looking at these films is the fact that both productions are based on real abandoned hospitals that spawned countless urban legends over the years. In Gonjiam’s case, the real-life Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital had at one point been featured on a CNN list highlighting some of the most haunted locations in the world, with both urban explorers and government officials claiming that the place was rife with unusually aggressive paranormal activity. However, a little digging reveals that the hospital’s eerie reputation is based more on bad vibes than anything else, as there’s nothing about the institution’s history remotely resembling a horrific backstory.

In fact, the Hospital’s ultimate closure was the result of economic mishaps and concerns regarding plumbing/sewage issues, with this actually being one of the reasons why the filmmakers ultimately opted to recreate the location inside of an abandoned elementary school rather than shoot the entirety of the film on location.

On the other hand, Strange Frequencies’ Xinglin General Hospital has a much more disturbing backstory despite being much less famous. Once a bastion of Taiwan’s highly advanced public healthcare system, the hospital closed down in the early ’90s due to multiple reports of medical malpractice, including wrongful deaths, and years of budgetary fraud. Since then, locals began telling stories about ghostly patients and orderlies who still roam the building’s decayed halls. Xinglin was also the setting of another horror movie back in 2020, appropriately titled Hospital.

Despite not being quite as famous as Gonjiam Psychiatric, Xinglin’s sordid history is much more well-documented, with claims of murdered patients seeming more plausible under the sleazy hands of a corrupt administration.

Beyond the settings, both films also share the same premise of having an exaggerated group of internet celebrities attempt to stay the night at these haunted locations before their own hubris leads to their doom. However, each movie goes about criticizing these characters in a different way. Strange Frequencies approaches the idea through a more meta lens, with some of the victims here being real actors and film producers risking it all in order to further their careers in an industry that has come to value likes and followers more than genuine talent.

There are still plenty of jabs at influencer culture and online engagement farming despite the sensitive nature of the hospital’s gruesome history, but it’s clear that what the movie really wants us to question is why we’re so entertained by the exploitation of a morbid past in the first place.

This also leads to a completely different ending this time around, with director Kerwin Go reworking certain story-beats from Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum in order to question if building cinematic success over a foundation of human suffering is worth the results.

It’s also interesting to note that, while the backstory of each haunting is remarkably different (with the original film presenting us with a ping-pong-obsessed hospital director who went mad and Strange Frequencies suggesting that otherworldly entities were involved in Xinglin’s collective downfall), both films focus more on the consequences of our main character’s actions than any master plan by the supernatural antagonists.

That being said, the very end of Taiwan Killer Hospital suggests that the success of the livestream may not have been natural, though I won’t get into details in order to avoid spoilers if you’ve yet to see the film.

At the end of the day, I’m more comfortable referring to Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital as a spiritual successor to Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum rather than a remake or even a pseudo-sequel. Both films share enough of the same base DNA to obviously be related, and they both borrow heavily from the cult favorite Grave Encounters, but there are so many creative differences in both story and presentation that the movies end up feeling like completely unique dishes based on the same ingredients.

While I still think Gonjiam is the superior film due to Jung Bum-shik’s incomparable eye for scares, both films are worth watching for completely different reasons.

If you really think about it, there are (allegedly) haunted hospitals in almost every single country in the world, each with their own unique histories and plenty of potential for ghostly scares. That’s why I wouldn’t mind seeing even more international “remakes” of Gonjiam so long as they’re as creative as this one and manage to include some local flavor into the mix.

Season three continues to expose a collection of video tapes from the secret vault of the world’s deadliest and most socially uncomfortable serial killer (Duplass). Unfortunately, as the tape rolls, the killer’s questionable intentions surface with his increasingly odd behavior and the victims will learn they may have made a deadly mistake.

To date, the series has lined up an impressive roster of guest stars and the upcoming season is no different.

Guest stars this time include Kate Siegel (Carrie), Nic Hamilton (IT), Elliott Fulham (Terrifier 2, Terrifier 3) and Duplass’ daughter, Ora Duplass (Coven Academy), who will star in a throwback episode.

The Creep Tapes is produced by Duplass Brothers Productions and Shudder. Executive producers include series star Duplass and Brice who both also serve as co-writers, with Brice directing all episodes. Additional executive producers include Mel Eslyn, Jay Duplass and Chris Donlon, while Shuli Harel serves as co-executive producer and John Baker serves as a producer.

In Nightborn, “With dreams of starting a perfect family, Saga and her British husband Jon move to the isolated house where she spent much of her childhood, deep in the Finnish forest. But as soon as their baby is born, despite the reassurance of all around her, Saga knows there’s something terribly wrong with her son. As their marriage starts to crack, Jon struggles to support his wife, but only Saga suspects the terrible truth about her newborn.”

Pamela Tola, Pirkko Saisio, Rebecca Lacey and John Thomson also star.

Bergholm teased of her maternal horror movie, “In Nordic countries, there’s a long-standing mythology of trolls living in the forests. In ancient times, people truly believed that trolls inhabited the woods and had a kind of control over nature. And in Nightborn, the forest reflects Saga’s emotions and the animalistic, primitive physical side of humankind.”

Batman: Caped Crusader’s first season was an artistic masterstroke, albeit one that left some general audiences wanting more. Season two is a satisfying extension of its predecessor that also fills in some of its gaps and does even more with the series’ mission statement. It’s a soothing blend of Saturday Morning Cartoon nostalgia and hard-hitting supernatural detective noir that feels very much in line with Matt Reeves’ recent take on Gotham and Batman.

This season fully embraces the overall theme of duality and how not to let one side overpower the other. This may seem a little on-the-nose for a superhero series, let alone a take on Batman, but it fits well with the retro 1940s alternate Gotham City that’s been meticulously cultivated. Additionally, this season repeatedly explores codependency and the ability to put trust in others, whether it’s Nygma’s bond with Thorne, Bullock’s partnership with Flass, Renee’s ties with Barbara, or Bruce Wayne’s camaraderie with Alfred or even Carrie Kelley.

There’s also a lot to unpack on the subject of belief and faith, which informs this season’s storytelling in creative ways that also chip away at Batman – and Gotham’s – image. It’s one big sprawling crime saga in a hyper-stylized noir world where nobody is beyond betrayal or corruption if the price is right. This feeds into the season’s grander storyline where Rupert Thorne’s trial provides a strong introduction to this universe’s Eddie Nygma (Ronan Raftery). Thorne and Nygma are the season’s central antagonists as the latter takes advantage of the massive power vacuum that’s opened up after Thorne’s incarceration.

Batman: Caped Crusader has plenty to say about its heightened, masquerading criminals, but at the core of all this is Gotham’s internal corruption, and if it’s reached a point in which it’s too far gone to be saved, who is responsible for its desolation, and the people who want to take advantage of this vulnerability and own the city. Gotham, and its festering nature, becomes the true main character of Batman: Caped Crusader. Its ability for redemption or the possibility that it sinks deeper into the abyss are integral to each of these ten episodes.

This season adopts a propaganda angle that’s critical of the GCPD and Batman that feels particularly appropriate and timely. There’s a vilification of Batman and a compulsion to turn him into a dangerous vigilante who is feared, rather than the antidote to Gotham’s crime. It’s a take that’s been presented plenty of times before, but in this case there’s a sliver of truth to this budding Batman’s early crime-fighting efforts that helps it hit harder and connect. This also leads to one of the season’s strongest and most disturbing episodes in which Mad Monk (Blythe Melin) leads a team of Batman impostor acolytes who are determined to further tarnish the Dark Knight’s name.

These episodes are also having so much fun with the obscure corners of Batman history that it’s pulling from. There’s a great Matches Malone undercover episode where Bruce Wayne has to infiltrate a prison as an inmate in order to get intel. After the first season provided creative takes on many of Batman’s more noteworthy rogues, season two has the freedom to dig into considerably more fringe figures, such as Barbatos the Bat-God and Roxanne “Roxy Rockey” Sutton, a Bruce Timm and Paul Dini deep cut from 1994’s The Batman Adventures comics and The New Batman Adventures.

This season uniquely tackles Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, and Calendar Man. There’s also an extremely chilling version of the Joker whose presence heavily looms over the season’s events. Matthew Needham gives such an unusual interpretation of the Clown Prince of Crime that’s borderline Shakespearean. It’s a really effective restrained subversion rather than some of the Joker’s broader and more jovially unhinged renditions. It feels more like Moriarty’s dynamic with Sherlock Holmes, if anything.

It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, but Batman: Caped Crusader absolutely excels with its animation, art design – the lighting and shadows in particular – and the 1940s Art Deco aesthetic that permeates through every frame. Each episode features sublime action sequences, many of which showcase a shocking degree of vicious brutality and a hefty body count. This includes one of the most gruesome Christmas fatalities this side of Batman Returns.

Batman: Caped Crusader features some incredibly moving, thought-provoking storytelling that’s on par with some of the most memorable episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. In some ways, Batman: Caped Crusader is even better than its ‘90s counterpart because it’s been allowed to ground itself in time and grow up. Batman is one of DC’s most popular and reimagined characters, with even more iterations on the way.

Batman: Caped Crusader still makes a strong impression and shines brightly – like the Bat Signal on a dark night – to give fans hope and let them know that they’re in safe hands. This hopefully isn’t the end of Batman: Caped Crusader, but if it is, then it can rest easy knowing that it’s created such a special, passionate love letter to this iconic character.

That alone might not necessarily sound like high praise given that the rest of the aforementioned movies are pretty bad to merely okay, so allow me to drive the claim home even further. The Devil’s Mouth is a good, fun, and frequently thrilling killer shark film.

I know. I’m as surprised as you are.

Five friends are enjoying a vacation in Thailand as one last hurrah before deciding what to do with their lives. They’re all in their twenties and really should have some inkling of that by now, but whatevs. Carpe diem, yolo, and all that jazz. A boating excursion goes slightly sideways, leaving Sara (Kathryn Newton) temporarily marked up by jellyfish stings, but it’s not enough to make her rethink plans for a freshwater cave swim the next day.

There’s a guide (Tayme Thapthimthong), the freshwater means there won’t be any dangerous ocean animals, and her coupled-up friends – Max (Lana Condor), James (Nico Hiraga), Adrienne (Tommi Rose), and Greg (Gavin Casalegno) – are all really excited for the adventure. For Sara, it’s also a chance to visit one of her recently deceased father’s favorite vacation spots.

It’s not long, though, before they realize something is amiss. Recent storm surges have pushed ocean creatures into the caves, and while most have died from the fresh water, one animal is trapped and thriving. An ornery bull shark is biting its way to the top of the food chain, and the survivors are forced to swim their way through an increasingly claustrophobic and crumbling cave system if they ever want to make it back to dry land.

The usual killer shark movie ingredients are present here, from the attractive ensemble and exotic location to the CG creature and increasing body count, but The Devil’s Mouth executes each of them a bit better than fans of the subgenre are used to seeing in recent years. Set pieces are well crafted with both suspense and thrills, and the whole works well to entertain and hold your attention through to the final shot.

The Devil’s Mouth teases the natural, sunlit beauty of Thailand before heading into the caves, but that shift doesn’t diminish the film’s visual engagement. The water-filled caves instead deliver eye-catching extremes from jagged rocks to bioluminescent water trails, and from giant, bat-filled caverns to tight, breathtaking passages. The environment calls to mind previous and equally entertaining animal attack films like 47 Meters Down: Uncaged and Black Water: Abyss, and the blend of real locations, practically (and impressively) built sets, and some probable CG extensions is perfectly convincing.

The shark finds life in both CG effects and prosthetics, and both deliver as the beast cuts through the water and attacks its prey. Some exaggerated third-act action sees the digital effects take a noticeable hit, but the bulk of the film captures the creature with respectable effectiveness. While too many of the CG shark movies deliver quick kills with the effects at the forefront, there’s a more harrowing approach here. Tasty human morsels are grabbed by the shark’s teeth and thrashed about – it’s something Jaws does so well but that most CG shark movies neglect – and plowed through the water. It looks fantastic and terrifying, and the victim’s screams only add to the horror as they’re bashed into the cave walls and dragged to their doom.

The cast does competent enough work even as some of them fall into their roles as “ugly Americans” who ignore their guide’s warnings in favor of boisterous, disrespectful antics that you know will lead to their deaths. Condor takes on a difficult balancing act as Sara’s best friend who’s also something of a bossy bitch – you believe her compassion and love for Sara, but you also want someone to slap her, gently, and say “No!” Hiraga plays her loyal boyfriend, and he reveals some genuine humanity beneath the otherwise straightforward character while delivering the film’s most emotional beat. (Arguably its only real emotional beat, but eh.)

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s Newton who stands apart from the bunch. She’s as fun and charismatic as ever, playing someone who’s clearly the most level-headed of the group even as she’s unpacking her emotional baggage. Her dad’s death pushed her into a hole, but Max forced her back out, leaving her indebted to a friend who she subsequently let drive her life. Newton’s patented semi-smirk is evident through much of the film, but it feels rightfully fueled by different things at different times.

Given the two lead character threads here, the film is, in some ways, a story about redemption. Sara is learning to trust herself again after loss and the willing surrender of control, and Max acknowledges her own deadly mistakes while making a case for a second chance. It’s fitting, then, that The Devil’s Mouth is also a redemption, of sorts, for its director, Jeff Wadlow.

If the name doesn’t quite ring any bells, perhaps a brief rundown of his previous horror efforts might jog those memories that you probably buried for a reason. Wadlow directed Truth or Dare, Imaginary, Fantasy Island, and Cry_Wolf, and it turns out his fifth stab into the darkness was the charm, as The Devil’s Mouth is not only the year’s best killer shark film, but it’s also the best film in Wadlow’s entire nine-movie filmography.

For one thing, the movie looks good. From the lighting and effects to the production design and cinematography, it’s a vast improvement over his previous efforts. A cave setting risks becoming visually dull or redundant, but Wadlow captures it all with a sharp eye and a sense of geography that never grows confusing. The inevitable kills come with varying degrees of suspense and visual thrills – one shot of the shark lunging out of the water towards Sara surprises, an underwater chase between air pockets and holes in the rocks finds real excitement – and what seems relatively grounded early on transitions away from reality, feeling more fun than stupid.

The Devil’s Mouth is a good time for genre fans who simply want to enjoy the ride of well-crafted survival horror. Does it grow increasingly silly? Sure, but it never stops being entertaining and compelling enough to keep watching as it delivers a cool shark, gripping kills, and a memorably claustrophobic setting.

If nothing else, this is the last killer shark movie being released in 2026. There definitely won’t be any more this year. Nope. Not a single one until the cycle starts again next spring. Right? Right?!

Deep inside the labyrinth of narrow waterways, their journey takes a terrifying turn when they discover that a freak storm the week before flooded the caves with sea life.

“The creatures died in the fresh water, but something survived… and it’s hunting them now— fast, silent, and deadly. Every corridor they round is overflowing with anxiety, and every wrong turn becomes a deadly encounter. As panic spreads and their sense of direction slips away, the group begins to fracture.

“Trust erodes, fear takes over, and survival becomes a savage game. In the suffocating darkness, every choice could be their last as they learn that to make it out alive, sacrifices must be made.”

Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare, Imaginary) directs the shark attack movie from a script he revised from Aja Gabel (“Sunny”) and Myung Joh Wesner (“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”).

The upcoming survival thriller has been rated PG-13 by the MPA for “violent content, bloody images, some language, and suggestive material.”

It arrives just in time for Shark Week.

Carrie follows a high school misfit who seeks revenge for a hideous prank by psychically destroying her senior prom. The name Carrie White has become synonymous with the concept of a formal dance thanks to a flawless adaptation from Brian De Palma. Now fifty years after the film’s release, Mike Flanagan is putting his own stamp on the troubling story.

Rather than a feature film, the writer/director will expand King’s relatively slim debut novel into an eight-episode miniseries for Amazon Prime set to premiere on October 7.

Flanagan is no stranger to the world of Stephen King. A long-time Constant Reader, he first made waves with his daring adaptation of Gerald’s Game (2017), a novel many fans considered un-filmable. His underrated Doctor Sleep merges the disparate plot of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining with King’s original source material, and his 2024 genre-bending tearjerker The Life of Chuck faithfully executes one of the author’s most metaphysical novellas.

He’s currently mired in pre-production for an expansive adaptation of The Dark Tower series, keystone to King’s connected universe, and Warner Bros. recently announced that Flanagan will helm a new version of The Mist, King’s 1980 novella which sees a small Maine town overrun by otherworldly monsters. 

Considering the vast array of the author’s previously unadapted material, an obvious question arises. Why reimagine Carrie in 2026? Noting the timeless nature of the content, Flanagan expressed his desire to bring the story of a bullied girl into modern times, mirroring his approach to Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House and Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher. He explained, “The only way to approach it was to build something new out of the ingredients of Carrie. Otherwise, there’s really no purpose in trying to retread ground that’s been so beautifully walked before.”

His miniseries will maintain the novel’s bloody bookends while delivering “big surprises” along the way. 

A New Prom Night Nightmare

The roughly 60-second teaser introduces Summer H. Howell as Carrie White just before the moment of catastrophe. Standing in a prom dress, she smiles at her applauding classmates with an ominous crown perched upon her head. Moments later, Carrie unleashes a rage-filled scream into the night air while promgoers rush for the exit doors. But careful examination of this scene shows Carrie wearing a different, albeit dirty dress as she seems to telekinetically punish her peers. 

In an exclusive first look with Entertainment Weekly, Flanagan explains that in his version of the story, “the events of that prom are going to be completely different.” An open trunk emitting a crimson glow does hint at the pig’s blood dumped on Carrie’s head, but it’s likely Flanagan’s formal dance will be a different kind of horror altogether. Despite these changes, the series may end with the widespread destruction outlined in the source material. Unlike any previous adaptations, King’s novel ends with the near-total destruction of Chamberlain, Maine. A flaming street in Flanagan’s trailer promises similar carnage no matter what prank sparks Carrie’s deadly revenge. 

The Monstrous Addition of Social Media

On the opposite end of this fiery conclusion is an extreme act of bullying that brings together the story’s main cast. King’s novel begins as Carrie gets her first period while showering in the girls’ locker room. Completely unaware of the concept of menstruation, the sheltered girl thinks she’s bleeding to death. Her classmates respond with vitriolic rage. Led by ultra-mean girl Chris Hargensen (Alison Thornton), they mock the terrified teen while pelting her with tampons. Glimpses of this disturbing event reveal that Flanagan has excised the scene’s nudity while adding a seismic update. As Carrie sobs in the shower stall, Chris and her friends film the breakdown with their phones.

Other scenes note the presence of social media, bringing King’s fifty-year-old story into the digital age. 

Flanagan’s adaptation promises to explore the destructive power of social media, an often invisible entity with a potential for harm rivaling Carrie’s own powers. While King’s tormented heroine suffers in front of a small group of girls, Flanagan’s version of the incident will likely become a viral video, potentially circling the globe on social media. Similar to Katt Shea’s criminally underrated The Rage: Carrie 2, which includes elements of revenge porn exploitation, Flanagan’s modern retelling will distinguish itself by exploring the nebulous cruelty of online bullying, a force ten times more powerful than the irl pranks King first envisioned. 

A Completely Reimagined White Family

In addition to modernizing these canon events, Flanagan hints at updates to Carrie’s oppressive upbringing at the hands of her mother, Margaret White (Samantha Sloyan). Dead before the novel begins, we never meet Carrie’s domineering father Ralph, known to carry a bible alongside his gun. Flanagan’s White household will be an altogether different beast. In his version of the story, Carrie and her mother have been hidden away in the unassuming home, forced out of hiding by Ralph’s unexpected death. Perhaps we will finally meet this elusive man whose shadow hangs over his wife and child. Considering the White family’s fundamentalist lifestyle, this reimagining hints at tradwife culture and a home ruled by staunch patriarchal control.

Whereas King’s Carrie has been tormented by her classmates since Kindergarten, Flanagan’s Carrie will be a wide-eyed newcomer to public school, eager to make friends and engage with her peers. We glimpse Carrie cozying up to Chris and the equally popular Sue Snell (Siena Agudong) as she navigates a new social scene. Of course, we know this kindness is part of an elaborate plot designed to lull Carrie into a false sense of camaraderie, setting up an atrocious act of public humiliation. These brief moments of feigned compassion put Sue’s own complicity into question. Will Flanagan’s version of the character find the courage to defend Carrie from vicious bullies or will she succumb to peer pressure and join in the mob mentality? 

Perhaps the biggest deviation from King’s original text is the relationship between Carrie and her mother. King’s Margaret White is a horrifically abusive religious zealot whose worldview has been hardened by internalized misogyny. She shames Carrie for menstruating, locks her in a closet to “pray,” and regrets not killing her child in infancy. She’s also responsible for Carrie’s social ostracization. Known to berate her neighbors for their “sins,” Margaret forces her daughter to live by an extreme code of conduct and disallows any potential friends lest they corrupt the girl with their worldly ways.

Flanagan’s version of the character is perhaps just as much a victim as Carrie herself. Also trapped inside her home, his Margaret is overly vigilant, her own trauma manifesting as strict control. Describing a more sympathetic depiction of the iconic villain, Flanagan explains, “Our Margaret White is a woman who fiercely loves her daughter and wants to protect her from this world … [She] doesn’t know how to do that and thinks the way to protect her is to close her off; not punitively, but to create this private utopia.”

Despite this potential softening, Sloyan’s Margaret may still have a sharp edge. Though she has appeared in many Flanagan projects, from Hush (2016) to The Fall of the House of Usher (2023), she is best known for her role as the abhorrent Bev Keane in the poignant saga Midnight Mass (2021). Perhaps inspired by King’s Margaret White, Bev is pious and sadistic, willing to punish anyone who does not adhere to her warped approximation of Catholicism.

Flanagan specifically wrote Margaret with Sloyan in mind, likely remembering the actress’s eerie ability to create deceptive empathy and shift our allegiances on a dime.   

Expanding Stephen King’s Telekinetic Universe

While most of King’s story deals with an unthinkable prom night in Chamberlain, Maine, large sections of the semi-epistolary novel see experts debating the nature of telekinesis. Do Carrie’s frightening abilities represent a new phase in human evolution or is the prom night carnage merely a fluke? King settles the debate with a shocking denouement in which a young mother recounts her infant daughter’s ability to dangle her crib toys in midair. We’re left to wonder if she will become another tormented girl who surprises the world with metaphysical strength. 

Flanagan plans to build out this brief scene while amplifying themes of female empowerment. After introducing our main cast of characters, episode two will open with an unrelated story in which we meet another girl with the TK gene. Each subsequent chapter will expand this world, building out a roster of telekinetic young women. Considering King’s fondness for stories about powerful kids, often described as possessing “the shining,” Constant Readers will no doubt have their eyes peeled for various Easter Eggs nodding to the author’s vast catalogue. 

Giving Carrie Her Own Voice

Perhaps the most striking distinction in Flanagan’s new trailer is the extent to which we hear Carrie’s voice. The sneak peek is fully narrated by the titular prom queen as she demands accountability. “I want to know why,” she explains while detailing Chris’ elaborate plan. Aside from the aforementioned coda, King’s book essentially ends with the aftermath of the prom night tragedy, leaving little time for Carrie to reflect. His shifting narrative does bring the reader into her fragile mind, though not before she’s been cowed by relentless cruelty. We watch Carrie sink into bloodthirsty revenge, but never hear a considered desire for justice or repair. 

Flanagan’s original monologue allows Carrie to voice her pain and mourn the life she could have had. We’re also treated to a mug shot-style photo of Chris with a bruised and bandaged face, implying that the mean girl will have to answer for her senseless sadism.

Flanagan is known for filling his series adaptations with heartwrenching speeches that cut to the heart of his thematic intentions, and this teaser seems to follow suit. After years of fans, critics, and scholars analyzing Carrie’s pain, perhaps his modern retelling will offer the titular anti-hero a chance to finally speak for herself.

Deborah Ann Woll (“Daredevil: Born Again“, Escape Room) stars as woman shocked to discover that a recent body discovered at a crime scene turns out to be her estranged father. It unleashes a supernatural nightmare.

The Cycle will debut exclusively on Shudder on October 23, 2026.

The logline reads, “When the body of a man missing for thirty-six years is discovered at the scene of a horrific crime, it’s up to his estranged daughter to unravel his dark past.“

Jeffrey Donovan (“Burn Notice“, Villains) also stars.

Jordan Downey wrote the screenplay with Kevin Stewart (The Head Hunter).

“We are so excited about The Cycle; Jordan has crafted such an original story that is gonna excite audiences. For us he has the ability to be the next great genre filmmaker and we can’t wait to make the movie,” said James Harris of production company Tea Shop (Obsession, 47 Meters Down). Peter Heller also produces.

Deborah Ann Woll rose to fame as the feisty vampire Jessica Hamby in HBO’s “True Blood” before becoming a fan favorite as Karen Page in Marvel’s “Daredevil” series. While horror fans recognize her from Escape Room and its sequel, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, the versatile actress has captured gamers’ attention as Laufey, Kratos’ wife in God of War: Ragnarök. She’ll receive her solo spinoff game in the upcoming God of War: Laufey.

Blade Runner 2099 will premiere on Prime Video on November 25.

The new series is set 50 years after the events of Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 and stars Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Hunter Schafer (Cuckoo) as partners Olwen and Cora, respectively. 

Like Rutger Hauer’s Roy Batty in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, Olwen is a replicant at the end of her life cycle. Her partner, Cora, is a human passing herself off as a replicant.

In the trailer below, Olwen and Cora team up in the war between replicants and humans as they pursue rogue replicants.

At the forefront of the new series are stars Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Hunter Schafer (Cuckoo), and EW has shared the first images of their characters.

Yeoh stars as a replicant Blade Runner named Olwen, facing the final days of her life. It’s a twist on the Roy Batty story from the first film; here, that story will be told from the replicant’s perspective.

Opposite her is Schafer as Olwen’s partner, Cora, a human fugitive pretending to be a replicant. Olwen and Cora will be working together to investigate missing rogue replicants.

Blade Runner 2099 comes from Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free, and Amazon Studios. Silka Luisa (“Shining Girls”) is writing, showrunning, and executive producing.

These characters are discovering who they really are. And so the climate is hot, it’s sticky, it’s sunny. We’re on the coast a lot. We’re in Santa Monica a lot. So it’s like you’re seeing Ridley’s texture, but you’re seeing it in the sunshine noir filter.”

The showrunner adds, “The show is really imagining what comes after us, and what does it mean to be human in a world where humanity is no longer relevant?“

This time, the fan favorite champions — now joined by Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) himself — are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.

Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada also star.

A version of MORTAL KOMBAT II with American Sign Language (ASL)will also stream exclusively on HBO Max the same day, performed by ASL Dubber Justin Perez and directed by Rosa Lee Timm (“Sinners with BASL,” “Minecraft with ASL”). The interpretation for this film will feature Visual Vernacular, a unique sign language form that combines elements of ASL, mime, facial expressions and body movements to convey highly visual stories.

From New Line Cinema, James Wan’s Atomic Monster, Broken Road Productions, and Fireside Films, Mortal Kombat II is rated R for “strong bloody violence and gore, and language.”

Look for Mortal Kombat II to arrive on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on July 28.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn begins streaming on Hulu on August 14. 

The new cut was first teased in an interview with director Chris Carter on the Fail Better With David Duchovny podcast from last year, where he teased a much scarier movie he intended.

“Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended to make,” Carter explained last year. “It’s not just doing a Director’s Cut to do a Director’s Cut. It’s really kind of bringing to life something that for me was on the page and never got to the screen.“

The director’s cut of the film was initially set to arrive on Disney+ in June, but quietly disappeared from the schedule without a word. Polygon reported the delay was “due to some last-minute adjustments being made to the film.” 

The release’s new “Vrach Frankenshteyn” title certainly suggests those adjustments have been made, likely referring to a Frankensteining of bonus footage.

In the film, Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) have been out of the FBI for several years, with Mulder living in isolation and Scully having become a doctor at a Catholic hospital, where she has formed a bond with a critically ill child patient.

When an FBI agent is mysteriously kidnapped, and a former Catholic priest who has been convicted of pedophilia claims to be experiencing psychic visions of the endangered agent, Scully is asked to bring Mulder back to the bureau to consult on the case because of his work with psychics.

The brand new R-rated cut will “faithfully restore the filmmaker’s original vision.”

The feature debut of writer/editor/director Brock Bodell, who previously edited the Fantasia title Ultrasound, makes its debut on Shudder on August 14.

In Hellcat, “Lena wakes up in a moving camper trailer with a horrifying wound. She’s warned by the driver that they have one hour to get to a doctor, or she’ll succumb to an unimaginably awful fate. As the pain sets in and reality begins to fray, who should really be afraid?”

Dakota Gorman (Natural Disasters) leads the cast that also includes Todd Terry (“Breaking Bad”), Liz Atwater (The Other People), Jordan Mullins (The Bikeriders), and James Austin Johnson (“Saturday Night Live”) in a voice role. Bodell also produces alongside Andrew Duensing and Nate Eggert.

Hellcat made its world premiere last summer at Fantasia. I wrote in my review, “Hellcat is a bit of a Trojan horror that defies easy classification, by design. Bodell’s sneaky debut feature is occasionally too sparse in its worldbuilding in its bid to preserve the mystery, but not enough to detract from the thrilling road thriller that transforms into a completely left-field type of horror we don’t get nearly enough of. The stripped-down tribute to a classic horror staple catches you off guard in more ways than one, marking Bodell as one to watch.”

In other words, there’s a lot more than meets the eye to Hellcat‘s simple infection setup, delivering plenty of surprises along its bumpy road of horrors.

This animated continuation is, warts and all, a notable example of turning a hit movie into a hit series. And although the new target demographic skewed a little younger, even kids-at-heart could partake in the further adventures of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore and Egon Spengler.

For a good part of its run, the show required fans to wait at least a week for more Ghostbustin’. That’s torture for a kiddo. Luckily, though, the entire series, or at least most of it, is now available for streaming.

So, as you revisit The Real Ghostbusters on Tubi—for now it’s just the first five seasons there—use this guide to help prioritize some must-see episodes.

The Boogieman Cometh

Season One’s “The Boogieman Cometh” is a classic episode featuring one of the show’s more iconic villains. It’s hard to forget the unique character design used for the Boogieman (whose creepy voice was provided by Ray and Slimer’s actor, Frank Welker). In this story, Egon is reunited with that bump-in-the-night entity who haunted his own childhood, all while trying to keep him away from his latest targets: the brother and sister claiming to have the Boogieman in their closet. Although the Ghostbusters do save the day here, the Boogieman eventually returns (“The Bogeyman Is Back“). That same episode also features the love-’em-or-hate-’em Junior Ghostbusters.

Mr. Sandman, Dream Me a Dream

You could say the namesake of “Mr. Sandman, Dream Me a Dream” had good intentions for putting mankind to sleep for the next few centuries—he wanted to end war and keep everyone dreaming. Sounds nice until you remember that whole free will business. But when it seems like the Ghostbusters have lost to their latest foe, the last one standing, Winston, gains a sudden ally. Janine’s dream of becoming a Ghostbuster is manifested, and she helps put this rogue spirit to bed.

When Halloween Was Forever

Before the show’s execs capitalized on Slimer’s popularity by making him the focus of later episodes, early stories like “When Halloween Was Forever” better utilized that gooey ghost. Here, the spirit of Halloween itself, Samhain, hopes to make the holiday a permanent thing by stopping time. And who does the embodiment of All Hallows’ Eve use in his nefarious plot? Slimer, of course. Thankfully, the lil’ green bud knows where he really belongs, and Samhain is banished (at least until Season 3’s “Halloween II 1/2“).

Night Game

Because Season Two was rather long, in comparison to other seasons, it accumulated quite a few solid episodes. One of the most beloved, though, is that ultimate good-versus-evil story, “Night Game“. Winston gets to shine here as he participates in a battle that was 500 years in the making. Except this time, the fighting is done on the baseball field. The other-dimensional settings in The Real Ghostbusters are always great, but the one here is particularly memorable.

Drool, the Dog-Faced Goblin

Not all ghosts and whatnot were bad in The Real Ghostbusters. As “Drool, the Dog-Faced Goblin” showed, some were actually benevolent. Sadly, it took a lot of convincing, and one very heroic act, for Peter and the others to see past this goblin’s grotesque appearance. The heroes find more than one shapeshifter at a sideshow carnival in the Poconos; a sinister Class-4er called the Metamorph does a swell job of menacing the Ghostbusters before they finally realize Drool’s not their culprit. The good guys indeed win here, but that victory is a bittersweet one.

The Collect Call of Cathulhu

While “The Collect Call of Cathulhu” does misspell “Cthulhu” in the title (probably to avoid legal issues), it is clearly the Old One in this Lovecraft-inspired episode. The story kicks off with the Necronomicon being stolen by the deity’s modern-day cult, who then raise their ancient god at Coney Island. From there, the Ghostbusters’ typical methods don’t work on the big guy, so they seek advice from an old issue of Weird Tales (or “Wierd Tales”, as it’s spelled on screen). That build-up to the finale comes with a decent amount of dread before the Ghostbusters, as well as a scholar named Alice, face off with one of the show’s most powerful entities.

Knock, Knock

A number of Real Ghostbusters episodes could be reworked into big-screen features, but perhaps “Knock, Knock” is the most hopeful. It helps that this story feels in step with the first two movies. Here, some ignorant construction workers accidentally uncover and open an ancient door in the subway. What’s behind said door is none other than those unspeakable evils that only the Ghostbusters can quell. A good deal of the imagery here is prime for adaptation.

The Grundel

One of the darker episodes, which was written by the prominent J. Michael Straczynski, is “The Grundel“. Here, a boy is being influenced by the titular entity, a type of ghost who ultimately turns his targets into new Grundels. The episode does have something of an after-school special quality to it, but that doesn’t take away from the eerier moments. For more Grundel lore, be sure to check out the episode “Grundelesque” from the sequel series, Extreme Ghostbusters.

Standing Room Only

It’s no secret that The Real Ghostbusters experienced multiple changes after the second season. Out of all of them, though, retooling the show so that Slimer would get more of the spotlight is maybe the most egregious. Thankfully, Season Four (the first to be called Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters) didn’t completely obey that new directive; episodes like “Standing Room Only” felt more like the old days. The focus here was on the well-being of the city and its people, rather than on the series’ green mascot (or the Junior Ghostbusters). In the episode, Peter’s new ghost attractor isn’t to blame for the ensuing chaos; the ghost-eating Mee-Krah is what’s really imperiling everyone. And the Ghostbusters must dish out everything they have to avoid a doomsday situation.

The Halloween Door

While many fans will skip the later seasons in their rewatches, episodes like “The Halloween Door” are still worth checking out. This colorful helping of Halloween pandemonium premiered on primetime, so the animation is better than usual. And save for a random musical moment, it’s an enjoyable event. Here, a group of anti-Halloweeners tries to cancel the holiday, but they only end up making things worse by unleashing a baddie named Boogaloo.

The first five seasons of The Real Ghostbusters are available on Tubi, starting on July 15.

The Vampire Lestat: One Night Only LIVE begins streaming on AMC+ on August 23.

Ahead of its streaming premiere, fans can preview the concert event, featuring original songs from series composer Daniel Hart and performed by Sam Reid, in Hall H at Comic Con International on July 24. 

Our own Daniel Kurland attended the special event, highlighting how electric the Immortal Vampire is on stage: “It’s clear in this season of television that Reid was born to be a rock star, but it’s surreal to see him effortlessly command the stage — and the audience — at every step of the concert. He recites Shakespeare monologues and bitches out Armand between songs, all while the audience screams in support. For the duration of this concert, Reid is Lestat, and he’s given thousands of fans a memory that’s as immortal as any vampire.”

Based on Anne Rice‘s The Vampire Chronicles book series, The Vampire Lestat is the rock and roll-centric third season of AMC’s “Interview with the Vampire” created by showrunner Rolin Jones.

The Vampire Lestat goes on an electric multi-city tour while being haunted by “muses” from his wild and rebellious past. As his band’s popularity and star power rises, so does Lestat’s influence over vampires and humans alike, leaving others to contend with Lestat’s power in the face of the Great Conversion, an unnatural surge in the vampire population.

Jacob Anderson, Assad Zaman, Eric Bogosian, Delainey Hayles and Jennifer Ehle star with Reid. Executive producers include Jones, Mark Johnson, Hannah Moscovitch, the late Anne Rice, and her son Christopher Rice.

The series finale airs this Sunday, July 19, on AMC and AMC+.

If you need even more incentive for an Evil Dead marathon, Evil Dead Burn actor Hunter Doohan recently teased that the new installment not only connects to Evil Dead Rise, but Sam Raimi‘s original trilogy as well.  

It’s also highly recommended by Ash originator Bruce Campbell, who warned on social media that the uninitiated may need to practice for the visceral Deadite horror ahead.

HBO Max is making this directive even easier; all five Evil Dead movies are now available to stream on the service as of July 1!

Catch up on The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, 2013’s Evil Dead, and Evil Dead Rise this weekend. For bonus credit, the Evil Dead series “Ash vs Evil Dead” is available to stream on Starz and Pluto TV.

In addition to mobile games, they’ve also created interactive movie experiences where you use your remote to select narrative options at branching points. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was a fairly successful version of this, but my sentimental favorite was the one where WWE’s New Day had to escape a murder house boobytrapped by The Undertaker. Even if some of these made a bit of a splash, it seems it never really hit with mainstream audiences the way their shows do.

One of the studios they purchased while trying to break into the game space was Night School Studio, the creators of the spooky narrative series Oxenfree. This struck me as a particularly smart acquisition, as this type of narrative game seems like something that would feel at home under the Netflix umbrella. While they did release Oxenfree II while owned by the streaming giant, it was released on traditional platforms, which led me to wonder when their first Netflix exclusive would show up.

While they did produce a game called Thronglets, a mobile version of a plot element from an episode of “Black Mirror”, the recently released Unhinged seems to be one of the highest profile Netflix games in a long time.

Unhinged is a first-person, narrative-driven thriller starring Zoë Kravitz, Sadie Sink, and Troy Baker. This 30-minute experience, played on your TV through the standard Netflix app, is controlled by your phone, using some clever tricks to make the whole thing feel more immersive. It’s a neat variation on the “interactive movie” subgenre, with a tiny bit of point-and-click adventure game DNA thrown in for good measure, but it doesn’t exactly offer you as many options as something like Until Dawn.

Kravitz plays Ava, a woman who is hunkering down in her apartment complex during a dangerous hurricane. As she talks with her friend Claire, who lives in a neighboring building, about possibly leaving to find shelter elsewhere, she finds herself in a desperate chase with a crazed killer that stalks her through the halls of the building. It’s a decent setup for a very contained story, but I wish there was a little more meat on the bones. The voice acting is great, but there’s not really a ton of characterization for the two leads, and the killer was a bit “generic psycho” for my taste. There’s some implied backstory with other tenants in the building, but it’s not enough to make me feel like there’s a web of relationships that would give the story more emotional weight.

To play the game, you open up your Netflix app wherever you usually watch, then select the game. This will bring up a QR code, which you’ll scan on your phone, prompting you to download a controller app that will sync up to the game. The majority of the way you’ll interact is by pointing at the screen like a Wiimote, which selects on-screen options for Ava and shines her flashlight around the environment.

While this does give it the feel of an FMV game, Unhinged is rendered in a photorealistic graphics style, and while not quite to the level of something like P.T., it does the trick of drawing you into the action. You’re still put on a pretty strict path while moving around, which is done automatically when you select a direction, but moving your phone gives you the ability to look around your environment, even if only slightly.

The real immersive part of the game is the fact that your phone also acts as Ava’s phone. The plot is frequently moved forward by calls and text messages that you answer as you would on your own cellular device. As sound blasts out of your phone, it does put you in the shoes of the main character, momentarily worrying you that the sound of the call or text is going to alert your on-screen stalker. This part of Unhinged truly takes advantage of the format to draw you deeper into the story, though unfortunately it’s so effective that I wished the game found even more ways to use it.

There are a couple clever moments that make for unique ways of delivering twists or doing extremely light puzzle solving, but most of the time it’s just used to allow your friend to give you instructions on how to move the narrative forward.

All these mechanics come together to give the illusion of tension without actually fully delivering on it. When you get to a situation where you’re under pressure, a timer bar will appear on the top of the screen, indicating how long you have to get to safety. It’s a fine gimmick, but it comes off as a little hard to gauge. Since you don’t have direct control over your character, all your actions are very heavily animated, and sometimes your choice ends up taking longer than you think it will not because of the idea behind the choice, but because of the length of the animation. Fortunately, if you die, you’ll just pick back up at a checkpoint right before the choice, and you’ll even be treated with a voiceover discussion between police officers examining the crime scene, describing how you died.

So in theory, there is tension, counting down as the killer gets closer and closer to reaching you, but what you’re actually doing almost never feels like it’s testing you in any meaningful way. Actual choices come up very infrequently, making most of your interaction with the game world just scanning your pointer across the screen looking for an interaction point to progress, hoping the animation doesn’t take up too much time before the timer runs out. I didn’t hit a ton of friction points with it, and there’s even a Story Mode if you want to take out all possibility of death, but I found myself wishing there were more ways to affect the world around me. The phone calls and texts felt really fun and clever, but the rest of the gameplay just didn’t match that, making me wish there was more emphasis on the unique interaction model rather than the more traditional one.

Even though the mechanics aren’t necessarily pushing the tension as hard as they could be, the actual content of Unhinged’s story contains some pretty brutal situations. The villain isn’t the most unique or fleshed out, but he’s responsible for some gruesome moments that raised the stakes to make the game feel more intense. It makes your fight for survival feel that much more desperate, so even if you’re just highlighting icons on the screen, it feels more visceral thanks to what Ava is witnessing.

While I appreciate the game being lean and mean, I wish it was just a little bit longer. Thirty minutes is a pretty short runtime, and it doesn’t feel like the story for Unhinged has the time to come up with something that really sets it apart from other stories of its kind. The focus on the hurricane at the beginning made me think that was going to be more integral to the plot, but it didn’t really do much aside from explaining why the apartment complex was so empty. Thrillers like this live or die on how memorable their killer is, and there wasn’t anything really clever or unique about him. If this game doubled its runtime to the length of a standard Netflix show, it might have given them more room to build character relationships that made the action more meaningful, or at least given it a bit more personality of its own.

Night School Studio is on to something with the format of Unhinged. The combination of on screen and on phone prompts makes the game feel more immersive, drawing you in even when the narrative itself doesn’t feel fully formed or unique. The short runtime is both a help and a hindrance, keeping the pacing tight at the cost of adding any depth to the proceedings. This feels like a great first draft, and I hope that Night School is given the freedom to continue experimenting with the model, as the level of polish shown here was promising.

Even with its flaws, if you’ve already got a Netflix subscription, there’s no reason not to sit down for half an hour to check out Unhinged. If you can keep your expectations in check, it’s a nasty little thrillride that doesn’t overstay its welcome.

The official synopsis reads: “When the crown prince is found dead in a pond, a chilling rumor paralyzes the palace: the pond spirit has returned to wipe out the King’s bloodline. The King (Cho Seung-woo) fiercely dismisses the killings as mere conspiracy, until his last remaining son, Prince Yeongan, collapses.

“Driven to desperation, the King secretly summons Gu-cheon (Nam Joo-hyuk), who can traverse the Realm of Gwi and defeat them. To ensure his loyalty, the King pairs him with Saeng-gang (Roh Yoon-seo), a court lady born with the ability to hear spirits.

“Gu-cheon embarks on the life-or-death mission to destroy the spirit and lift the curse of the East Palace, or die within its walls. But as Gu-cheon hunts the spirit and Saeng-gang secretly spies on his every move, the two draw closer to the dark truth of the East Palace that lies beneath the pond.“

New to Tubi July Horror Films

Deep Blue Sea (1999)

• Premise: Searching for a cure to Alzheimer’s disease, a group of scientists on an isolated research facility become the prey as a trio of intelligent sharks fight back.
• Why Watch It? Let’s be frank: Director Renny Harlin has made some absolute dogs in the last few years (the less said about The Strangers trilogy the better, though this year’s Deep Water was actually ok). Deep Blue Sea remains one of the Finnish director’s best contemporary efforts, though. Between the great cast (Samuel L. Jackson, Saffron Burrows, Stellan Skarsgård, Michael Rapaport, LL Cool J, Thomas Jane, and Jane’s sleeveless wetsuit), the ridiculous premise, and that damn/dumb song (“My hat is like a shark’s fin”), you basically can’t go wrong with Deep Blue Sea. It’s one of two great shark films gliding onto Tubi this month, so why not stay out of the water and watch this instead?
• Streaming: July 1

Exorcist II: Heretic (1977)

• Premise: Reagan (Linda Blair), a girl once possessed by a demon, finds that it still lurks within her. Meanwhile, Father Lamont (Richard Burton) investigates the death of the priest who performed her exorcism.
• Why Watch It? August sees the release of documentary Boorman and the Devil, which is about the troubled production of this sequel. The notoriety surrounding Heretic has undoubtedly kept plenty of horror fans away from the sequel, but this truly is a “seeing is believing” kind of film. Real talk: it’s undeniably a disaster, but the John Boorman film has also become a minor cult film. Don’t you want to see it to make up your own mind? 
• Streaming: July 1

Hostel: Part III (2011)

• Premise: Four men attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas fall prey to the Elite Hunting Club, who are hosting a gruesome game show of torture.
• Why Watch It? What does Hostel look like without Eli Roth? Part III kinda answers the question. Technically Roth is still a writer, but he hands over the directorial reins to Scott Spiegel (best known for acting in Evil Dead films). The result is a film with a terrible pedigree; it’s also the first (and last) entry to skip theatres before the franchise was permanently shelved (until that TV show with Paul Giamatti shows up?). For some horror fans, however, there’s something exciting about a bad low-budget sequel. Just bear in mind that the Hostel: Part III‘s biggest star is Kip Pardue…so adjust your expectations accordingly before hitting play.
• Streaming: July 1

Insidious 1-3 (2010/2013/2015)

• Premise: A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.
• Why Watch It? It’s hard to believe that the sixth (!) Insidious movie is coming out in a month and a half, but James Wan and Leigh Whannell‘s other horror franchise has been steadily chugging along for sixteen years. It’s a shame that Tubi doesn’t have all five films available to watch, but in terms of quality, you can do far worse than the original trio. The first film is iconic, and the second is basically an extended coda (with some admittedly problematic stuff going on). I’ll go to bat for Whannell’s 2015 directorial debut, though: there’s a few banger sequences in that film that people slept on.
• Streaming: July 1

Man Finds Tape (2025)

• Premise: After finding mysterious video clips, siblings investigate the strange recordings and uncover a disturbing secret spreading through their Texas town.
• Why Watch It? Writer/directors Paul Gandersman and Peter S. Hall‘s well-received found footage film did an extensive tour of the festival circuit, so now is a great time to check out one of the most contemporary titles debuting on Tubi this month. Surely a title that hails from producers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Spring and The Endless) is worth a free look?
• Streaming: July 2

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)

• Premise: A depressed musician Adam (Tom Hiddleston) reunites with his lover Eve (Tilda Swinton). However, their romance, which has already endured several centuries, is disrupted by the arrival of her uncontrollable younger sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska).
• Why Watch It? This beautiful, melancholy vampire film is courtesy of writer/director Jim Jarmusch, who doesn’t often dabble in genre fare. As always, some will quibble if this artsy drama qualifies as horror, but the existential ennui of an eternal life certainly qualifies (bonus: there’s also something inherently sexy about watching Hiddleston and Swinton just lay about). Plus: if Leviticus has you hankering for more Wasikowska, this is an under the radar pick.

The Shallows (2016)

• Premise:A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy (Blake Lively) is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills.
• Why Watch It? What better time to watch a shark movie than July? The temperatures are soaring and the idea of escaping into the water is so tantalizing. This tight, contained thriller features a great performance by Lively (and that damn seagull!), but it’s the direction from genre fave Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan; the House of Wax remake) that keeps the movie clicking along like clockwork. At 86 minutes, this is a perfect summer flick.
• Streaming: July 1

Vacancy (2007)

• Premise: Stranded in an isolated motel, a couple (Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale) become the unsuspecting subjects of a snuff film.
• Why Watch It? I’m not going to pretend that this Nimród Antal-directed home invasion film is high art, but it is a good time. You’ll likely wish there were deeper characterizations for Wilson and Beckinsale’s David and Amy in Mark L. Smith‘s screenplay, but this mid-aughts thriller is tense, exciting, and just the right amount of grimy. Plus: another short runtime, clocking in at an expeditious 85 minutes!

The horror movie will make its global streaming debut exclusively on HBO Max on Friday, July 3. The film will debut on HBO linear on Saturday, July 4 at 8:00 pm ET.

The gory reimagining of a Universal Horror classic follows as ” a journalist’s young daughter disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.”

Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Laia Costa (“The Wheel of Time”), May Calamawy (“Moon Knight”), Natalie Grace (“1923”), and Veronica Falcón (“Ozark”) lead the cast.

From Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and New Line Cinema, the film is produced by horror master James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville. Lee Cronin executive produces.

“This is a very different kind of Mummy movie,” Cronin promises. “It’s an insane mashup to suggest, but [the film is] almost one part Poltergeist and one part Se7en.” Though I’d argue it’s all parts Evil Dead.

Cronin previously told BD of his Mummy, “The aspiration to want to do something unique, but placed it within the sandbox of the Mummy sort of lore and mythology. But within that, how do we find something that we haven’t quite seen before?”

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is rated “R” for “Strong disturbing violent content, gore, language, and brief drug use.”

Strung is already off to a tropey start when the protagonist, a bereft violinist named Laila (Chloe Bailey), is vividly hallucinating during one of her recitals. Who does she see in that ghastly vision on stage? The sister whose death she blames herself for, of course. That’s when Laila wakes up from what’s actually a hallucination within a dream.

After a one-night stand with a handsome rando, another too-good-to-be-true opportunity soon falls into Laila’s lap. Because she’s broke, couch-surfing and forced to practice the violin inside her best friend’s closet, she jumps on it without much forethought. That opportunity is indeed suspicious, though; a wealthy grandmother (Lynn Whitfield) hires the main character to be her granddaughter’s live-in music teacher. The pay and accommodations are definitely good, but what about the client? Or clients, as it turns out.

First, there’s pianist-in-training Zuri (Romy Woods), the walking definition of “precocious child in a horror movie”. She hides behind the bizarre mask once belonging to her late father, and her preferred form of communication is sharing obscure facts. Eventually, though, Zuri is the least of Laila’s problems; it’s her neglectful, demanding, and temperamental mother (Anna Diop) who proves to be the greatest obstacle at each turn. Diop just about snatches every scene with her zealous performance as the expectant Imani. Yet as amusing as that moody matriarch can be, her behavior brings up a good question: Is this cartoonishly devious character the legit villain here, or is she simply a red herring?

The kid’s creepy mask, along with Blumhouse’s involvement, might suggest a different kind of horror movie is at work here. Strung, however, is more like a smutty modernization of classic domestic thrillers that feature big houses, imperiled women, and heaps of paranoia. Keep in mind, this is not a bait-and-switch situation; Alan B. McElroy’s screenplay never leads the viewer down a different path, only to then send them another way.

Strung feels stitched together from other (and better) movies, and your sussing out the suspects is never a hard task. But on the plus side, this movie is often bright and even a little colorful; it’s not too riddled with scenes of flat darkness or washed-out palettes. The music is also another area of interest; certain choices corroborate that comparison to old Hollywood thrillers.

So while Strung does string out a number of overplayed twists—with some being less foreseeable than others—it’s a bit comforting to see how some ideas never cease to be used, no matter how familiar they’ve become. The cast’s eagerness also compensates for the general been-there-done-that quality. So often, their commitment to the story is integral to the movie’s best hand-over-mouth moments (and there are quite a few).

Joe Bob Briggs once said the best source of exploitation movies today is the Lifetime network. If you agree, as well as love Tubi’s own efforts in similar filmmaking, then Strung is made for you. This movie taps that same vein of suspense schlock, all while adding a few flourishes of its own.

Strung streams on Peacock starting on June 26.

Picking up moments after the all-out attack from the Le Domas family in the first Ready or Not movie, Grace (Weaving) discovers she’s reached the next level of the nightmarish game — and this time with her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) at her side. Grace has one chance to survive, keep her sister alive, and claim the High Seat of the Council that controls the world. Four rival families are hunting her for the throne, and whoever wins rules it all.

That means a higher body count and even more explosive carnage. Just how much? A whopping 325 gallons worth, the directors previously told BD.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, David Cronenberg, Elijah Wood, Kevin Durand, Olivia Cheng, Varun Saranga, and Daniel Beirne also star.

I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “More is more in Ready or Not 2. Bigger stakes, larger playing field, a higher (and more gruesome) body count, and even double the protagonists. It’s all designed to deliver maximum crowd-pleasing fun.”

The horror-comedy sequel is written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy.

Nightborn will make its premiere at Fantasia on  July 22 before debuting on Shudder on July 31.

In Nightborn, “With dreams of starting a perfect family, Saga and her British husband Jon move to the isolated house where she spent much of her childhood, deep in the Finnish forest. But as soon as their baby is born, despite the reassurance of all around her, Saga knows there’s something terribly wrong with her son. As their marriage starts to crack, Jon struggles to support his wife, but only Saga suspects the terrible truth about her newborn.”

Seidi Haarla (Compartment No. 6) and Rupert Grint (Knock at the Cabin, “Servant”) star in the film described as ” a visceral, gripping and terrifying dark fable about motherhood and unconditional maternal love.”

The cast also includes Pamela Tola, Pirkko Saisio, Rebecca Lacey and John Thomson.

“Hanna Bergholm’s audacious sophomore follow up to Hatching delivers tension and shocking moments surrounding parenthood and self discovery — with a touch of humor,” said Emily Gotto, senior vice president of acquisitions and production at Shudder. “We are thrilled to share Nightborn with audiences.”

Bergholm previously explored the darker aspects of motherhood with her horror fairy tale debut, Hatching, a coming-of-age creature feature about a girl who hatches a mysterious egg found in the woods.
