In an exclusive conversation between Obsession costume designer Blair James and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma costume designer Kendra Terpenning, the pair broke down their experiences on the two films, their biggest influences, and more.

Curry Barker’s Obsession occupies a unique space, as everything about this universe feels real, though the overall look and tone feels ethereal and otherworldly. Of creating that tone, James explained, “It’s built on the idea that it’s real and these are real people experiencing these very scary, obscure things. That was definitely my inspiration for Obsession — wanting to make things feel really real so that it was just scary because it was real life and real humans experiencing scary things.”

The more referential nature of Camp Miasma meant Terpenning drew more direct inspiration from classics in the genre, noting, “[Writer/director] Jane [Schoenbrun] wanted to give tribute to some iconic characters from other actual existing horror franchises. So we have a lot of Sleepaway Camp. We have some Halloween, naturally, some Friday the 13th.” Another key component of the movie was creating an all-new slasher icon in Little Death, with Terpenning revealing, “One of the maybe more obscure [references] would be our lead antagonist, Little Death. The costume is inspired by the plastic that Laura Palmer washed up on the beach wrapped in, in the first episode of Twin Peaks.”

Honoring the ’80s was easier said than done for Terpenning, especially given the movie’s blood and gore. She recalled, “Parts of Miasma, the film within the film, are set in 1983, I need historically accurate clothing in resets, which is not something you can just like run out to… our vendors who give us like archival stuff from the era are invaluable… but I can’t take their garment and cut into it so that some guts can fall out.”

The visual style of Obsession was what proved to be a challenge for Blair, given how much of the movie was shrouded in darkness.

“I actually tried to watch the preview of it on my TV during the day and I was like, I cannot see a single thing on my TV right now,” James confessed. “I knew that going in, I met with the DP, Taylor Clemens and Curry and we talked about the overall look… And a lot of the colors, a lot of people would be like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know the dress that Sarah and Nikki wear is purple.’ And it almost looks black, which I think some people might be upset by, but I actually liked that all the colors got darkened because they felt like the red, it made the red more jarring.”

Dougherty has returned to the world of Trick ‘r Treat for the new comic Trick ‘r Treat: Witching Hours, which features four all-new stories that honor the movie’s blend of whimsy and the macabre. Speaking with Bloody Disgusting about the new release, Dougherty reflected on the spirit of the franchise, “It doesn’t just happen to take place on the holiday, but it really celebrates the traditions, the folklore and the mythology of it, which is something that I’ve been fascinated with ever since I was a kid.”

He continued, “When I think we’re all initially introduced to the holiday, it’s for the obvious reasons: ‘Oh, you have to dress up in costumes and get candy.’ For a lot of people, that’s enough. Then, as you get older, that changes and there’s sort of a party element to it and romantic pursuits, et cetera, on Halloween night, all that. But I became fascinated with the folklore behind it and discovering that it wasn’t just another consumerist holiday, that it actually went back to some pretty, genuinely creepy, mystical origins.”

While Witching Hours will hold us over for the time being, a Trick ‘r Treat sequel was announced back in 2013, though the project has yet to earn substantial momentum. It’s not Halloween without an update on the sequel, with Dougherty delivering the requisite reaction.

“I feel like there’s no right or wrong answer … The only wrong answer would be to say, ‘Oh, it’s dead and it’s not happening,’ but I don’t feel like that’s appropriate or true,” the filmmaker confessed. “I hate to be vague. I hate to sound like I’m dodging. It’s just that right now we have an amazing script, and I went above and beyond and I storyboarded literally the entire movie. Like, every scene in that script has been boarded to within an inch of its life. So even two people sitting in a booth talking to each other was storyboarded.”

He continued, “Because normally you just board your set pieces, your more action-driven or your scare moments, anything involving visual effects and monsters, usually that’s what you focus your storyboarding efforts on. But I was enjoying that process so much with my storyboard artist, I was like, ‘Screw it, let’s just do the whole movie. Why not?’ And so I have this massive PDF, I think it’s 735 pages long of literally every scene storyboarded, and it almost reads like a graphic novel unto itself, funny enough. So we have that.”

The new Witching Hours book is an official extension of the Trick ‘r Treat world, but this isn’t the first attempt at a spin-off. In fact, Dougherty revealed that he came close to moving forward on a Prime Video series that would have been the animated adventures of Sam.

“There was a minute where we were talking to Amazon about doing a Halloween special. It was almost a weekly Halloween special/series where basically we would make a six-part animated Halloween special,” Dougherty revealed. “So every week in October, you would get one or two episodes of this. And fully embracing the origins of Sam, who yes, started as an animated character long before he was live-action, and we got very, very close with Amazon, but we couldn’t quite work out a deal, but it was exciting there for a second.”

Bloody Disgusting: I know last year you did a Four Favorites for Letterboxd and I was trying to find “Michael Dougherty’s favorite Halloween movies” and the only thing I could find goes back to 2011, when you listed some Halloweens, The Exorcist, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Changeling, some Universal Monsters, The Shining, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, Disney’s Halloween Treat, Fantasia, and Psycho. I wondered, are there Halloween staples that the season doesn’t really start until you watch those movies, or, also, if there’s a movie that, no matter how much you love it, you have to save it for Halloween night?

Michael Dougherty: Really great question. I will say that the season doesn’t begin until I watch [John] Carpenter’s Halloween. It’s so easy, it’s almost cliche at this point to say that, but it’s true. And for me, it happened two nights ago. Today being the first day of autumn, if I’m not mistaken, I started a little bit early, but it felt like the weather had changed enough and gotten cold enough that it felt right. But the way I tend to watch favorites these days, though, it’s more in the background.

I watch favorite movies, favorite Halloween movies, especially on a loop in the background the same way that people listen to favorite albums. It’s hard for me to sit and watch a lot of my favorite movies all the way through, because I’ve just watched them so many times at this point. But I put them on in the background and just enjoy them for the ambiance.

So then that means October 31, is it just whatever happens to be on, whatever you grab off the shelf?

I mean, it sounds weird, but I tend to bookend the season with Halloween. It’s just such an old favorite and it relaxes me, I think because the pacing of the film is so deliberate, even slow compared to what we’re accustomed to these days. It’s funny, because when I was a kid, before I’d actually seen Halloween, I used to check the LP out of the library, out of our local public library, and I would just listen to the music.

Now the movie itself has become that. So, again, it’s like a favorite album, and so I really enjoy using it to start the season. And then, at the end of the night, when I’m exhausted from whatever Halloween festivities I’ve participated in — whether it’s parties or scaring trick-or-treaters or whatever — usually at least one of the Halloween movies, if not the original. I have a soft spot for [Halloween] H20 and Halloween 4 personally, or Halloween III. I would say usually one of those caps the season for me.

Well, we’re talking about the Halloween franchise. There’s lots of movies out there and lots of comics out there that take place on Halloween, sometimes lean more heavily into the holiday, other times just happens to be that time and place. Both the movie and now with this comic book, what do you think makes Trick ‘r Treat so unique and so special in the world of all the Halloween horror out there?

If I had to guess, I think it’s what I intended it to be, which is to be a horror Halloween movie that truly embraces everything that the holiday is really about, that it doesn’t just happen to take place on the holiday, but it really celebrates the traditions, the folklore and the mythology of it, which is something that I’ve been fascinated with ever since I was a kid.

When I think we’re all initially introduced to the holiday, it’s for the obvious reasons. “Oh, you have to dress up in costumes and get candy.” For a lot of people, that’s enough. Then as you get older, that changes and there’s a party element to it and romantic pursuits, et cetera, on Halloween night, all that.

But I became fascinated with the folklore behind it and discovering that it wasn’t just another consumerist holiday, that it actually went back to some pretty, genuinely creepy, mystical origins. The idea that all these seemingly just fun traditions that we embrace, the costumes and the candy especially, have a purpose. There’s an intention that they were designed to protect you from spirits that wander over from the afterlife.

And the idea that that continued over centuries and still exists, and so every time you dress up your kids and you send them out into the night to go trick-or-treating and collect candy, you’re actually participating in this weird, almost occult ritual. That fascinated me. So the goal was to make a movie that really embraced all that and didn’t shy away from it, and I think we were successful.

I think so. That’s just one man’s opinion, but I certainly think so.

And, by the way, it really goes back to Sam, which a lot of people don’t know this, but Sam predates Trick ‘r Treat. Sam started in this animated short film that I had made called Season’s Greetings. I did this while I was a film student at NYU. This is actually his 30th anniversary, funny enough. And the goal for Sam, even back then — because I recently dug up my original notes that outlined the intention of that short film, and right there, it’s line two, it says, “My intention is to capture the spirit of Halloween.” And that was always the goal for the creation of Sam.

I think that persisted into Trick ‘r Treat, which came 10 years later.

What were the origins of Witching Hours? Were these stories that you had in mind [for] a sequel movie and you were able to evolve those into a comic? Or, once you had the idea of a comic, did you just start from scratch about stories that could only be told in this medium?

No, they weren’t leftovers from attempts at the sequel, they were completely original. Honestly, I just gathered some of my closest collaborators, Zach Shields and Todd Casey, who I worked on Krampus with, and Breehn Burns, who was one of my main concept artists on the first Trick ‘r Treat film. And then Curtis Waugh, who has been my assistant for years, and just brainstormed.

The fun of a comic book is, you weren’t quite as constrained with budget and schedule the same way that you are with movies, so it became a fun pie-in-the-sky exercise to come up with just the wildest, most insane ideas we possibly could, but that still felt true and faithful to the tone and style of Trick ‘r Treat. But, also knowing that there was a previous graphic novel that we had done, gosh, almost, I think, 10-11 years [ago] now, and wanted to evolve it even past that.

It was really fun. Some of the stories I think could work in a sequel, some might be a little bit more cost-prohibitive, like there’s one where we ship Sam off into space, which I know sounds ridiculous — and it started as a joke, to be honest, because I’m on the record in past interviews of saying a lot of our favorite horror icons and franchises, for whatever reason, all decided to ship them off into space. So Pinhead in one of the Hellraiser movies, part four, I believe, ends up in outer space. Jason [Voorhees], notoriously Leprechaun — so it kind of became, it was like a joke that I cracked. And then I was talking with Curtis, my assistant, I was like, “Wait a second, that’s not that crazy. What if we just embrace the absurdity of this and just run with it?” And we did, and it was really fun.

You spoke already about how, with the original movie, you had specific traditions in mind to put a darker spin on some of those traditions. What are the traditions that inspired the stories of this new book, without breaking down the complete plots of the new book? 

I mean, all of them, honestly. All the stories take different traditions and run with them. So the idea, especially of the dead coming back to visit the living on Halloween night, we do that in some different ways. There’s one story that takes place in New York City, which I’m really excited about, called, “Did You Miss Me?” and it actually follows a ghost as he rematerializes in New York on Halloween night, which — I don’t know how many of the viewers have been to New York City on Halloween night, but it’s insane. The whole city just goes batsh-t crazy and everybody’s in costume, it’s just one big giant party.

There’s no escaping it, which is the best part.

What happens to that ghost when he finally realized he’s dead and that he’s come back in order to close a chapter on his previous life and hunt down — not hunt down, but find the woman, his beloved wife and find closure in their relationship, but then things go awry, but he also discovers there’s a supernatural underworld that only he can see because he is a ghost within the city. There’s another story that takes place in a retirement home and it involves some elderly folks who are a little bit closer to the grave than they are to the cradle, realizing that this might be their last Halloween and what that means and what happens when Sam enters the picture and grants that wish of what it might be like to be a kid again one more time on Halloween night, and things take a turn there, too.

So all the stories sort of take a different tradition, a different ritual, a different piece of Halloween folklore and add that special sprinkling of Sam magic, as it were.

What was the collaborative process like on this? You obviously worked with writers who you’ve worked with before, but you also enlisted a bunch of really awesome comic book artists. How did this whole project shape up?

It really happened organically. Again, on the writing side, I brought in my most trusted creative collaborators who I’ve known for years, all of them. I mean, Breehn, I think I’ve known for almost 20 years now and we collaborate together all the time. Zach and Todd, I’ve known them for 10-15 years altogether, and so there’s just a natural rhythm.

It’s like putting a band together. Not that I’ve done that, but I assume it’s very similar. You get together and you riff and you just throw ideas against the wall and at each other and you figure out what sticks, so the stories came together very easily. And then the fun part about the artwork, well, for one, Breehn is an amazing artist. He can take an idea that we craft together on the writing side and just create the most spectacular visuals, and I tend to have very few notes, if any. He actually illustrated his own story, which is beautiful. It’s very textured, but that was super easy. Just pass the baton to him on the art.

Then on the other stories, we auditioned different artists, and this is where Legendary Comics came into the picture and really helped facilitate finding other comic book artists. We wanted to make sure that every story had its own feel. Funny enough, one of the inspirations for these books is the Hellraiser comic books from the ’90s, which I’m not sure how many people are aware of that, but they’re phenomenal. They blew my mind when I was a kid, because they cracked open what a comic book could be. They didn’t look like Marvel or DC. They went out and got classic artists, watercolor artists, acrylic, oil, and each book was like walking through a museum, an art museum in a way. Every story had its own feel, not just tonally in the writing, but also visually.

I took a page from that and we found artists from different backgrounds and all over the world, which was really fun because you’re working completely remotely and they’re sending sketches and you’re shaping it. It was like making a movie in slow motion, in a way.

Speaking to the medium of comic art, what do you think is the biggest advantage of telling a Trick ‘r Treat story in this medium? And then what is the biggest challenge that you don’t face when making a movie?

Oh, interesting. I would say the biggest advantage is what I mentioned before, that you aren’t bound by budget and schedule as much. Obviously, there’s a budget for comic books, but you’re given free reign as long as you stay within this, say, 30-page limit. What happens within those panels and within those pages isn’t constrained by a shooting schedule and say a $15-million budget. Because there are definitely some stories and moments that we couldn’t afford to do in a Trick ‘r Treat film unless we were given, like, a Marvel-sized budget, especially in “Harvest Moons,” which is the story where Sam goes to space. I mean, that one turns into just something massive in a really fun way.

It’s nice to be unshackled like that and to really color outside the lines and think outside the box, because I love Trick ‘r Treat, the first film and also the screenplay for part two gets a little bit bigger, but just to be able to go hog wild with Sam and the amount of monsters that you can cram into a full page spread is really fun.

Only since you mentioned it, I do just have to get it out of the way. I’m legally obligated to get an annual live-action movie update so we can put it out there and people will leave you alone for the next six weeks, I hope.

No, I feel like it has become its own Halloween tradition, right? So there’s trick-or-treating, there’s costumes, there’s Halloween parties, there’s decorations, and then there’s asking Mike Dougherty about the status of Trick ‘r Treat 2, and then me giving some vague cryptic answer that still holds out some hope. Then there’s a flurry of online articles and social media posts.

I don’t know what kind of answer I can or should give. I feel like there’s no right or wrong answer. But beyond that, I just don’t really have much of an update. All the materials are there. I’m ready to go. I’m very proud of what my collaborators and I have pulled together for a potential sequel. So it’s there and I’m ready.

Well, I wanted to get that out of the way, if only to ask, this process of making this all-new graphic novel full of these all-new stories, if there was a world where you said, “You know what? The live-action thing, this is gonna be so complicated, there’s so many different obstacles that might be in the way,” that you just turn this script, this storyboard into a graphic novel and put that into the world?

Maybe I could write that into my will, if I ever die, but I’m still holding out hope, I guess. I’ve thought about that. Like, “Yeah, maybe I can just slide the script over to the comic division at Legendary and we just turn it into a massive graphic novel at some point.” But yeah, I was almost inspired by what Michael Mann did and he put out the book for Heat 2, right? And now that’s being made into a film. So, listen, that’s a maybe, but I’d still rather try to get just the movie made first.

Well, and expanding on the world of Sam and Trick ‘r Treat, Sam started in animation, then there was a full-length anthology and now comics. Has this started a brainstorming process of other mediums that the character or the concept could go into? Live-action YouTube shorts or a TV show, like Creepshow on Shudder. Is there a bigger Trick ‘r Treat world out there?

I mean, I think so. I have mentioned that to my collaborators in the past. There was a minute where we were talking to Amazon about doing a Halloween special. It was almost a weekly Halloween special/series where basically we would make a six-part animated Halloween special. So every week in October, you would get one or two episodes of this, and fully embracing the origins of Sam, who yes, started as an animated character long before he was live-action.

We got very, very close with Amazon, but we couldn’t quite work out a deal, but it was exciting there for a second. So yeah, that’s a possibility. And it’s fun watching the brand populate other mediums. I really enjoy that. I think it’s part of the creative process, for me, is that it’s not just about a movie. It’s about, “Okay, well, what are the toys? What are the games?” A couple of years back, we worked with Call of Duty and Sam ended up as a guest star alongside Michael Myers and Ghostface and Art the Clown for one of their Halloween events. That was a lot of fun.

I love seeing what my little guy can do on his own organically and populate other mediums. He’s at Six Flags Fright Fest this year, he’s had two mazes at Halloween Horror Nights. I think there’s a very healthy — there’s still a lot of life left in Sam and other mediums for him to explore.

Lastly here, since you mentioned the life that Sam has generated, you can’t go to a Spirit Halloween or you can’t go anywhere with horror stuff without seeing a hundred different types of Sam. For you, I wondered if there has been a favorite piece of Sam merch that you have come across, and also if there has been a weirdest piece of Sam merch that you’ve either heard of or had to be like, “No, that doesn’t make any sense. We need to scrap that”?

I don’t know if there’s been a weirdest moment. Well, I will say this, I don’t think there’s a weirdest piece of merchandise, but over the past few years, it’s gotten more fun, but also weirder for me personally, because my house in L.A., I decorate to the nines every Halloween, there’s a full cemetery that goes up and my friends come over on Halloween night and we just scare the bejesus out of trick-or-treaters, in a fun way, in a family-friendly way.

My whole neighborhood really gets into it, so a lot of houses are decorated. I remember taking my dogs for a walk and doing a double take because Sam was on somebody else’s front porch. It was the Spirit Halloween animatronic. And then I went around the corner and somebody else had a Sam hanging from their tree, a different Spirit Halloween decoration.

And then on Halloween night, five kids showed up at my doorstep dressed as the character. You have to keep in mind, they don’t know who I am. I don’t broadcast that. I’ve never met these neighbors, they’re just in the neighborhood, but the fact that they had Sam decorations on their porch or hanging from the tree or there’s the kids showing up at my own doorstep, that was definitely a moment for me where I realized the genie is fully out of the bottle. It was very flattering.

Spirit Halloween has been a wonderful partner, and I’m hoping that it continues to get weirder and more wonderful like that. Also, I enjoy going to the horror conventions and I’ll see t-shirts or people cosplaying as him or people with Sam backpacks peeking back out at me, and so it’s like realizing your kid has escaped into the night.

I think the Halloween Horror Nights maze from back in 2018 is still the high bar for me of Halloween Horror Nights mazes in general. That was such an incredible experience.

Wounds explores obsession, morality, and the dangerous allure of artistic ambition, examining how creativity can both inspire and consume. Shot entirely on 35mm film, it is described as a love letter to the indie horror genre, in the spirit of auteur directors such as Brian De Palma, David Cronenberg, and John Carpenter.

In the movie, “Caleb Castle (Kilmer) is a horror-obsessed special effects makeup artist struggling to prove himself working at a fading horror studio. With the studio on the verge of collapse, Caleb gets to work on a low budget vampire movie where he meets Ginny Brown (Jackson), a talented fellow makeup artist. Desperate to prove himself, Caleb witnesses a brutal murder which inspires him to use extreme, horrific measures to make his special effects look chillingly realistic.”

Wounds makes its makes its world premiere at Screamfest, when it screens October 8 at the TCL Chinese Theatre.

Your Dearest Darkest Friend debuts on October 30 and features a special collaboration with The Last Podcast on the Left, who lend their voices to the colorful supporting cast of puppets. Check out behind-the-scenes images below featuring the podcast hosts and their puppet counterparts.

Last Podcast on the Left co-host Ed Larson is starring as Ted’s co-host, Mortimer Dustworth, a re-animated head in a jar that has a love-hate relationship with Ted. Henry Zebrowski, Marcus Parks, and long-time Last Podcast collaborator Holden McNeely (host of the Nerd of Mouth Podcast on the Last Podcast Network) will make special guest star cameos throughout the season as other characters and puppets.

Holden McNeely also serves as the show’s lead writer. The puppet characters are created and puppeteered by award-winning filmmaker Matt Cunningham and his company Groovy Monsters.

In Your Dearest Darkest Friend, Raimi welcomes celebrity guests into his haunted manor for an evening of confabulation, cocktails, and the presence of an uncanny creature or two… Joined by his puppet companions, Raimi takes viewers on a delightfully dreadful journey into the minds of some of the biggest names in horror—with a twisted sensibility only Ted Raimi can deliver.

“Ted and I just clicked from a comedy perspective, which made this one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had on a job. Matt the puppeteer and I became fast friends, and everybody on set wanted to talk horror and joke around all day long, including our fabulous directors Tony and Charlie. It was like a horror comedy summer camp, and I’ve missed it ever since. This year’s Season of Screams runs through the end of the year and features a supersized lineup of new film releases, series, specials, screening events, and live watch parties on Shudder TV.

Shudder’s Season of Screams features highly anticipated premieres every Friday through the end of the year, including Parasomnia; a new installment in the popular V/H/S franchise, V/H/S/Mixtape; the found footage breakout hit Infirmary, body horror thriller Bloody Tennis; supernatural nightmare The Cycle; the Milly Shapiro-led Hallowarrior; a new season of The Creep Tapes; the 2026 FANGORIA Chainsaw Awards; and a new Halloween special, Joe Bob’s Halloween House Party.

This Halloween we’re also getting an all-new Ghoul Log special, the annual twist on the traditional holiday yule log. Titled Curse of the Ghoul Logs, this year’s sequel was created by the filmmakers behind Shudder’s buzzy new feature Hallowarrior. They didn’t just resurrect everyone’s favorite jack-o-lantern; they’re giving multiple pumpkins the spooky spotlight.

Pumpkin’s lonely holiday ritual is interrupted by the arrival of a savage gang of raiders at her doorstep led by Thalia (Shannyn Sossamon). Outnumbered and armed with candy, wit and weapons, Pumpkin must ferociously fight back to survive the night.”

Hallowarrior is written and directed by Ben Sottak.

Even though Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 doesn’t have an official release date, even with some creative changes behind the scenes, there’s still significant progress being made. Star of the first two movies, Matthew Lillard, is set to return for the next chapter. While speaking with Bloody Disgusting in support of Mike Flanagan‘s Carrie TV series on Prime Video, the actor confirmed that the plan is to shoot next year.

“I know the early version of the script came through and everyone’s really excited about it,” the actor shared. “And I know they’re moving to the next level, so we will be shooting in 2027.”

If the plan is to shoot in 2027, it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll get the sequel before the end of next year, though if production starts as early as January, we can’t rule out the sequel’s release in 2027. Luckily, the creative shifts don’t seem quite as severe as the obstacles faced by the original movie.

This past June, a report claimed that Gary Dauberman (IT, The Nun, Salem’s Lot, Until Dawn) had been enlisted to pen the next chapter of the saga. Dauberman replaces creator of the series Scott Cawthon, who wrote the previous two entries, with two-time director Tammi expected to return for the next sequel. While Lillard and costar Skeet Ulrich both teased their returns for the upcoming installment, it’s unknown if stars Josh Hutcherson, Piper Rubio, and Elizabeth Lail will return.

Given Dauberman’s horror legacy, hopes are high for the next chapter. Despite poor critical reactions, the first movie took in $297.2 million worldwide, while the second scored $239.6 million. If the next entry resonates more strongly with viewers, its box-office performance could go even higher and potentially reinvigorate the film series.

As we wait for Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, we can see Lillard in Carrie when it premieres on Prime Video on October 7. Prime Video describes the new series, “Misfit high‑schooler Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.”

The post ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 3’ Star Matthew Lillard Says “Next-Level” Sequel Will Shoot in 2027 [EXCLUSIVE] appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

Flanagan is next delivering the Stephen King adaptation Carrie for Prime Video, with the filmmaker claiming his “dream scenario” was a three-season arc. Speaking with Bloody Disgusting in support of the new series, when asked if his The Exorcist was approached as the first installment in a longer narrative, Flanagan confirmed he is most focused on an effective single story.

“Oh, you know, I have no idea. I was so fixated on getting to the end credits of that movie,” Flanagan confirmed of his future with The Exorcist. “That’s another franchise that has this huge legacy and so many expectations piled on it. I wouldn’t let myself imagine past, like, the last day of production, to be honest. It was, how do I deliver an Exorcist movie right now? One movie that is going to invigorate the fan base and show us something we haven’t seen before in one of the most explored subgenres that exists?”

He added, “So, yeah, if that turns into something more, that would be amazing. I’m still just trying to see my way to the end of the edit. I can’t see past that at the moment. But yeah, I guess, never say never.”

To this point, we haven’t gotten any official looks at the new movie, but based on Flanagan’s impressive work on The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and Doctor Sleep, he’s more than qualified to tackle the legacy of The Exorcist.

After the release of the original The Exorcist, the first sequel, Exorcist II: The Heretic, failed to impress audiences or critics. The making of the film was a challenging experience, to the point that the journey was chronicled in the documentary Boorman and the Devil. The Exorcist III has a stronger shift away from the original, tonally and narratively, and has earned a devout following.

One of the most consistent elements of The Exorcist, however, is behind-the-scenes challenges, as made evident by the releases Exorcist: The Beginning and Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. Paul Schrader was enlisted to make The Beginning, only for the project to be taken away from him and retooled from his original vision, as director Renny Harlin took over. After The Beginning‘s underwhelming release in 2004, Schrader was allowed to complete his take on the concept with Dominion, which similarly struggled with audiences in 2005.

Jeremy Slater‘s TV series The Exorcist received some of the best reviews since the franchise’s start, though it failed to earn major ratings and was canceled after two seasons. Hopes are high that Flanagan’s The Exorcist can bring the series back to its rightful glory, though we’re being cautiously optimistic.

Even just this year, movies like Exit 8 and It Ends explored similar ideas, and there’s even more liminal terror to look forward to on the horizon. Currently set to be released on December 25 is The Poolrooms, which follows a teenager trapped inside an impossible aquatic structure filled with endless swimming pools, towering waterslides, hidden chambers, and mysterious passageways that seem to stretch on forever. We have an exclusive look at the upcoming movie, which teases the discomfort of the upcoming experience. You can see new behind-the-scenes images below.

“There was something deeply disturbing about taking an object you associate with childhood and making you afraid of it. That’s what we wanted with SUNNY. This first look is just an introduction. Seeing it in motion, and seeing the horror it’s capable of, is another experience entirely,” says director Galen Christy. He added, “The goal was to make you feel like you’re standing there yourself, with no idea what’s waiting around the corner.”

Co-director Sasha Yelaun continued, “Galen and I have primarily been known in the industry as producers. Stepping into directing gave us a completely new perspective and brought back the sheer fun of letting our imaginations run wild. Whether we were jumping into water slides or running around an empty soundstage in Atlanta figuring out how to bring a scene to life, there was a real sense of discovery. We had an incredible time making this film, and I think that energy comes through on screen.”

Also producing the project are Alexander Kane (Mel Gibson’s Bandit,  Bruce Willis’s Breach) and executive producer Brian Katz (Kevin James’ Solo Mio, Jordan Peele and Robert Englund’s Abruptio).

The Poolrooms is currently set to be released on December 25.

Earlier this year, the pair put the word out that they wanted to find up-and-coming filmmakers who deserve the spotlight, with the hope being to elevate the awareness of talents on the rise. The result is the anthology movie Fresh Meat, which brings together the best submissions from the initiative, while also featuring an all-new segment directed by Janisse.

Tickets for Fresh Meat have officially gone on sale and we can exclusively debut the first trailer, which can be seen below.

Fresh Meat will screen in theaters on October 12, with tickets available through Fandango.

“We’ve been wanting to do this for a long time — hold a shorts competition to help identify and support the next generation of horror filmmakers,” said Janisse and Rebecca. “Dead Meat has always been a champion of horror cinema, even before its recent mainstream success, which has been exciting to witness. Now more than ever we’re getting smart, original, groundbreaking films in our beloved and historically underappreciated genre. We’re thrilled to join in on the fun and help contribute to that talent pool with Fresh Meat.”

The Dead Meat team were submitted more than 500 shorts, first whittling things down to 30. From there, the top 13 submissions were selected for the one-night-only theatrical release of Fresh Meat. The excitement doesn’t end there, as the screening will include a QR code where audiences can vote for their favorite short, with the filmmakers who earned the most votes scoring $25,000.

Janisse himself directed the movie’s wraparound segment, “Sate the Screen.”

Segments in Fresh Meat come from the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, Austria and the Netherlands. The filmmakers whose segments were selected for the anthology each received $2,500. Fresh Meat is produced by Dead Meat and Hades Films, the horror company spun out of Atlas Entertainment.

David Charbonier & Justin Powell (The Boy Behind the Door, The Djinn) direct from a script by Jason Filardi (17 Again, “Chapelwaite”) and Peter Filardi (The Craft, Flatliners).

Paulina Chávez (“Landman”), Kieron Moore (“Vampire Academy”), Eoin Macken (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter), Alicia Sanz (“From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series”), Cedrick Cooper (“Boots”), Corrado Martini, Alvise Rigo, and Elisabeth Sanjuán round out the cast.

The ten-episode anthology series will premiere exclusively on October 2 on Tubi this Fall in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

From executive producer Peter Rice and GJMD Studio, the series brings a fresh take on the short-form horror format to Tubi that was previously explored in Hulu’s “Bite Size Halloween.”

Each episode will feature a new story, ranging from occult to body horror, dark comedy, monsters, and the macabre.

The Japanese horror movie, written and directed by Dave Boyle, releases in theaters on September 25, 2026.

Kento Kaku (“House of Ninjas”), Kurumi Inagaki (“House of Ninjas”), Mutsuo Yoshioka (Chime), Bokuzo Masana (“Tokyo Vice”), and Tae Kimura (“All Around Us”) also star.

It’s a cozy, creepy supernatural horror movie. I wrote in my SXSW review that it’s “a conventional atmospheric haunted house with a unique approach to the supernatural. It’s that new wrinkle, along with an unwaveringly cool heroine, that sets it apart.”

Boyle was recently tapped to take on a remake of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Pulse.

The ancient Council in Leviathan have noticed Pinhead’s new scions, Quiver and Sublux, and their newfound devotion to suffering—outside the purview of the Council. But the Engineer seems to have given the Order his blessing, and the Council is interested in finding out why…

Ahead of its festival debut, we have a trio of exclusive mini teasers that introduce a twisted trip to the desert.

Godmother centers on “a young woman named Theo in her late 20s (Paige Evans) who heads into the desert for a romantic weekend with her tech bro boyfriend (Cameron Cuffe) as well as her tagalong sister (Riley Dandy). But when they arrive at their vacation rental, they’re greeted by a couple (Dee Wallace & Bruce Davison) who seems far too eager to meet Theo.

“The resulting horror movie promises to have bloody betrayals, home-made torture chambers and frenzied elderly people as it tells the story of one woman fighting to define herself in a world that has seemed as though it’s decided her future for her.”

As the festival notes, “this nightmarish desert retreat will ‘take you over the edge, make you lose control.'”

It’s horror movie influences are said to include Rosemary’s Baby and The Return of the Living Dead.

Godmother is part of Charred Pictures’ initial slate of projects, the label launched by video game writer, creator, and producer Alanah Pearce. That also includes upcoming video game adaptations Dead Take and FAITH. Godmother is directed by John Veron.

Director Rocko Zevenbergen’s sci-fi horror comedy makes its world premiere next week at Fantastic Fest, running September 17-24 in Austin, Texas.

In the film, “An annoyingly optimistic, but endearingly earnest, fast food restaurant manager is tasked with relaunching the long-dormant product, Flapjax, and no amount of mysterious warnings or disappearances is going to get in his way in this campy horror-comedy.”

Watch the teaser below, which introduces the rather addictive but unappetizing Flapjax and its flesh-melting consequences.

Zevenbergen co-wrote the screenplay with Estevan Muñoz, who also appears in the film.

“‘Flapjax’ has been in the works for over six years now. It is such a thrill to finally unleash our micro-epic ‘onto the menu,’ as it were. Audiences can expect a rollercoaster ride through cinematic styles; moments inspired by Ozu and Cronenberg blend in a style I believe is unique to our picture. I’m hopeful festival audiences will be swept away by our incredible cast, led by Gabriel Cagan, into the world of Hamudders, alien conspiracies, and …mommy issues!?” Zevenbergen previously told Variety. 

The filmmaker also produced the film with Aerin Chaklai, George Jones, Jefferson Moneo, Patrick Hackett and Fabiola Caraza on behalf of Prowler Pictures, while Daniel Futa, Mike Chapman and Fatima Hayward served as executive producers.

The Ones Who Grieve will receive its North American premiere at Fantastic Fest, kicking off next week in Austin, Texas, from September 17-24.

In the film, “At the end of the 19th century, on an isolated farm, Zélie is trapped under the authority of her father Jacob, a deeply religious man. As a mysterious disease known as the ‘Black Veil’ ravages the surrounding countryside and faith begins to blur with madness, she must fight to preserve her humanity and claim her freedom.”

A plague may serve as the backdrop, but Quarxx’s director’s statement touches on a much more intimite horror ahead: “The Ones who Grieve is, above all, a film about control. An intimate, insidious form of control that begins within the family unit and gradually contaminates the entire social body. The starting point is neither fear nor the fantastic, but a far more difficult violence to confront: forbidden desire, enforced silence, and domination exercised in the name of moral, paternal, and religious authority.”

The film stars Thierry Frémont, Zélie Rixhon, Isabelle Anciaux and Jean-Baptiste Maunier, and comes from Transgressive Production and Kali Pictures.

The film is currently seeking distribution.

Fantastic Fest wrote of the film, “Quarxx examines the tyranny of a self-proclaimed prophet who wields religion as a tool of domination and control. Thierry Frémont fully inhabits the role, delivering a chilling performance that lays bare the character’s monstrous nature. ”

Bloody Disgusting has the exclusive scoop on upcoming film The Kentucky Goblins, which promises a brand new found footage descent into the terrifying world of cryptozoology.

Frogman took audiences deep into the legend of Ohio’s infamous Loveland Frogman, blending cryptid folklore, found-footage, and a healthy dose of horror. Now, the cameras are getting set to roll once again—and something horrifying is waiting to be found.

“We’ve heard from fans who are curious about what’s happening in the larger cryptid world beyond Frogman, and The Kentucky Goblins is our first attempt to explore that question,” says Cousins. “Thankfully, we’re just as excited to explore other cryptids, what they’re doing here, and how they might all be connected! There are so many cryptids I think deserve their time in the spotlight, but when I started researching the 1955 Kentucky Goblins incident, the idea of what that could look like as a movie came together incredibly quickly. I couldn’t wait to bring it to life.”

Joining Cousins, who is serving as writer, producer, and director on the project for his Shocktreatment Productions, is filmmaker and producer Vincente DiSanti of Womp Stomp Films.

DiSanti said in a statement to Bloody Disgusting, “I grew up on Gremlins, Critters, and Munchies, so getting the chance to work with Anthony and help bring a new creature feature to life feels pretty special. I’ve always wanted to be a part of a project like this.”

So what’s The Kentucky Goblins about? Here’s the official synopsis…

Christmas Eve, 1989. Nancy Clark is hosting the first Clark family Christmas since the mysterious passing of her husband, Larry. But just as the family attempts to enjoy their holiday, a series of violent tremors awakens an ancient evil buried deep beneath the Kentucky countryside.

The Kentucky Goblins have arrived to ruin Christmas!

Now, Nancy, alongside her children Tami (Sydney Steinberg), Easton (Nate Caywood), and Shannon (Krsy Fox), must put aside their inter-family differences and band together to survive a subterranean menace before their holiday is destroyed forever.

Also caught in the chaos are Tami’s husband Chris (Noah Findling), and their two children, Claire and Mac, as well as childhood family friend and local cop, Officer Robbie (Ryan Nemeth).

The Kentucky Goblins will unfold entirely through the lens of a family’s holiday home video. What begins as a record of Christmas Eve becomes a feature-length found-footage horror film when something unexpected comes down their chimney.

The Kentucky Goblins Kickstarter campaign will launch on September 8.

“There are six more movies mapped out in and around the Frogman saga, and the ideas just keep coming,” Cousins teases. “The Kentucky Goblins will kick off a new storyline that expands the cryptid mythology even further. Hope follows “police outpost chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) as they investigate a series of violent attacks believed to be the work of a mysterious creature lurking in the nearby forest. As local hunters join the search, the line between predator and prey begins to blur, revealing a story that challenges assumptions about fear, humanity, and the unknown.”

Based on the new images below, this creature feature may be gnarlier than the trailer suggests.

Zo In-sung (“Moving”), Taylor Russell (Bones and All), Cameron Britton (“The Umbrella Academy”), Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), and Michael Fassbender (Prometheus) also star in Hope.

Hope had its World Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival back in May.  The festival’s director, Thierry Fremaux, previously teased that Hope “constantly changes genres” to capture a story of “no part of history that’s ever been told before.”

The Restoration at Grayson Manor is coming to theaters nationwide this October, releasing via Chroma, before arriving On Demand on December 1, 2026.

The Irish gothic horror film is directed by Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead, V/H/S) from a script he co-wrote with Clay McLeod Chapman (Wendell & Wild).

McQuaid even designed the new poster for the film below.

Glee’s Chris Colfer stars as Boyd Grayson, “a hedonistic heir who torments his legacy-obsessed mother, played by genre icon Alice Krige (Star Trek: First Contact). When an accident leaves Boyd handless, she rebuilds him with prosthetics wired to his subconscious, hands that act on his most violent urges. Inside their decaying Gothic estate, those hands unleash horrors on Grayson Manor.“

Colfer and McQuaid will also appear at select screenings for Q&As; stay tuned for more as the theatrical rollout gets announced.

Bloody Tennis makes its debut on Shudder on September 25.

Watch the full trailer below that sees students engaging in Raw-like initiation rituals that grow increasingly more deranged. There are far more leeches than expected at a sports academy.

The film follows “Sophie (Guldberg Kampp), an American tennis player who earns a spot at an elite academy hidden away in Southern Europe. Beneath the pristine courts and promise of athletic excellence lies an isolated, cult-like environment where ruthless competition and extreme discipline come at a dangerous cost. The film uses the contrast between tennis’s elegance and brutality to explore the darker side of achievement culture and what happens when the pressure to succeed pushes young athletes beyond their limits.“

The cast also includes Helena Zengel (The Legend of Ochi), Lucie Zhang (Paris, 13th District), Lily Taieb (The French Dispatch), Tracy Gotoas, Elina Löwensohn (Schindler’s List), and Zlatko Burić (Triangle of Sadness), with an original score from Jim Williams (Titane, Raw, Possessor).

Bloody Tennis marks the English-language debut of Greek-German filmmaker Nikias Chryssos (Der Bunker).

Bloody Disgusting has been provided with exclusive images from the new restoration, teasing one of the genre’s most shocking and underseen films.

The Metrograph describes the film as, “A hard, cool-to-the-touch, and utterly riveting slow-burn psychological thriller that, newly restored for its first ever US theatrical release, speaks to our age of parasocial obsession, featuring a sinister synth-pop soundtrack by Staiger’s own band, Rheingold, and a last act that’s finger-lickin’ good.“

Der Fan, written and directed by Eckhart Schmidt, stars Désirée Nosbusch as Simone and Bodo Staiger as “R”, the object of Simone’s desire.

Staiger, as frontman for new wave group Rheingold, also provided the film’s score.

Fun City Editions has restored Der Fan in 4K from its original 35mm camera negative. The film is presented with its original stereo soundtrack for the first time since its initial German theatrical release in 1982.

Without giving anything away, it’s the shocking third act that sets Der Fan apart and earned its cult status. Much like Takashi Miike’s Audition, it’s an unassuming feature that hides its visceral horror side until a jaw-dropping finale.

The film is also not without controversy, due to Nosbusch’s age at the time of filming, further catapulting Der Fan into cult shocker territory.

In the film, “A 10-year-old girl begins to believe her parents are trying to kill her. Convinced a sinister spirit is to blame, she spirals into a haunting fantasy world that mirrors her deepest fears.”

Cameron Dawson Gray stars as the young girl, Johanna, opposite Ruth Wilson (Victorian Psycho) and Ben Chaplin (Mrs. Davis, Murder By Numbers) as her parents.

It’s a horror story from the child’s perspective as she struggles to navigate her own anxieties and fears over her father’s illness. Finkel drew from personal experience; he began writing this story at 14 after losing his father to cancer.

While that means Family centers on one of horror’s favorite themes, grief, Finkel demonstrates a keen eye for scarecrafting right out of the gate.

Family is scary!

That’s apparent in the trailer and new images below, which delivers plenty of nightmare fuel, especially concerning a terrifying Ruth Wilson.

Family unnerved audiences at its SXSW premiere in 2024. I wrote in my festival review, “What Finkel does remarkably well, though, is crafting visceral scares and bone-chilling imagery with an oppressive, claustrophobic atmosphere. The sound design is skin-crawling and creepy, ensuring every creak and moan the house makes puts you on edge, and that’s before the inhuman whispers and clicks signaling an otherworldly presence.

“Above all, Finkel mines the uncanny valley for maximum terror, tweaking and stretching familiar silhouettes and frames to viscerally disturbing effect.”

That’s certainly reflected in the trailer.

Decades after a gruesome murder-suicide involving the Wallace family gave rise to disturbing local legends, the forest remains haunted by stories of a grotesque figure lurking deep within the trees. In the present day, Scott’s friends Kyle and Jessica plan a weekend camping trip to help him recover from a painful breakup by introducing him to Jessica’s friend Michelle.

What begins as an attempt to reconnect and escape everyday life soon spirals into terror as the group realizes the legend haunting the woods may be real. As paranoia, isolation, and violence escalate, the friends are forced into a desperate struggle to survive the horrors hidden within Deathwoods.

Jake Kopronica and Deryk Wehrley co-direct from a script Kopronica co-wrote with Deathwoods‘ creator Scott Conner.

Starring in the upcoming horror movie are Anthony Dain, KateLynn E. Newberry, MacKenzie Lee, Kellan Jackson, with Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp, Terrifier 2) and introducing Miles Dimitri Baker.

From writers and executive producers Mark Duplass (Backrooms, The Morning Show) and Patrick Brice (Creep), season three continues to expose a collection of video tapes from the secret vault of the world’s deadliest and most socially uncomfortable serial killer (Duplass). The South Korean horror movie follows Professor Se-jeong as she is thrust into a terrifying hellscape when a mutating virus is unleashed during a biotech conference, forcing authorities to seal the facility to contain the outbreak. Se-jeong and a group of survivors must fight to stay alive as the infected undergo horrific transformations and threaten to spread the virus.

The clip below sees humans trapped within department stores, surrounded by the infected. Survival quickly becomes more precarious as the virus mutates, triggering a more dangerous evolution.

Colony marks Gianna Jun’s (Blood: The Last Vampire, “My Sassy Girl”) first feature film since 2015’s Assassination. She stars alongside Koo Kyo-hwan (Peninsula, Escape from Mogadishu). 

Ji Chang-wook (“Healer”) and Shin Hyun-been (“Hospital Playlist”) also star.

The viral outbreak horror movie is rated ‘R’ for “bloody violent content and some language.”

“I made Colony with the hope that, amid this horror, the audience might finish the film with the question, ‘What is it that makes humans human?’ lingering in a corner of their mind,” Yeon Sang-ho said in his director’s statement.

Tickets are on sale now for the Kansas City premiere of Don’t Move at the Midland Theater on September 8 and the Los Angeles premiere at the TCL Chinese Theater on September 9, ahead of Don’t Move‘s theatrical release on September 11.

The upcoming creature feature adapts the 2020 novel of the same name from co-authors Murray and Darren Wearmouth. 

In Don’t Move, a church group’s annual retreat turns deadly when they wander into the wrong part of the Ozark wilderness, and something starts picking them off one by one.

Suspicion falls on Ricky, the troublemaker of the group. But the real threat is far worse. Deep in the forest, wrapped in a labyrinth of webs, the group is pursued by a terrifying prehistoric arachnid that hunts by vibration. When every step could be their last, they only have one choice: Don’t Move.

It’s up to Megan to hold what’s left of the group together and get them out alive.

Lyndsy Fonseca (Kick-Ass), Russell “Russ” Vitale, and Tom Cavanagh (The Flash) star alongside Hunter King (Life in Pieces), Rob Riggle (The Hangover), and Joseph Lee Anderson (Young Rock). Expect plenty of cameos including T-Pain, Matt Biedel, and “Impractical Jokers” members James Murray and Brian Quinn.

Maclain Nelson (Vamp U) directed from the script he co-wrote with Murray and Wearmouth. 

The creature feature is the first under Murray’s new banner, Impractical Studios, designed to bring his authored works and love of horror to mainstream audiences. Don’t Move is produced by Murray, David M. Wulf (The Card Counter, Call Jane), and Ethan Berman.

Victorian Psycho is now set to release in theaters on lucky Friday, November 13, moving from its initial September 25 date.

It’s a much more fitting slot for this psychological thriller, in which meals, dining, and holidays play a prominent role.

Maika Monroe stars as eccentric governess Winifred Notty, who arrives at a remote gothic manor where strange happenings stir suspicion that she’s not what she seems.

Thomasin McKenzie (Last Night in Soho), Jason Isaacs (Honey Bunch), Ruth Wilson, Amy De Bruhn, and “Hamnet” breakout Jacobi Jupe also star.

Zachary Wigon (Sanctuary) directed the film from a script by author Virginia Feito (Mrs. March), based on her novel of the same name. Victorian Psycho is produced by Dan Kagan (Longlegs) and Sebastien Raybaud (Greenland: Migration).

Wigon previously said of his lead, “Maika’s intense screen presence has resonated with me over and over again throughout her history of complex performances. I’m absolutely thrilled for her to bring her unique style of psychological portraiture to the fascinatingly bizarre Winifred Notty.”

Monroe turns in another unforgettable performance, this time as an unhinged psychopath unleashed upon a stuffy society. I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “Carnage becomes pretty dang delightful in Maika Monroe’s capable hands. Victorian Psycho operates on familiar slay grounds, but it’s an absolute blast thanks to its zany style and deranged sense of fun.”

Victorian Psycho is rated ‘R’ for “strong bloody violence and brief sexual material.”

The upcoming horror movie written and directed by James Ross II makes its debut on Shudder on September 4.

Parasomnia follows “Riley, a young woman tormented by night terrors and a past of unresolved tragedy. When her best friend is the latest to go missing, she begins to suspect the demonic figure lurking in her sleep has crossed over into the real world.”

Jasmine Mathews, RJ Brown, Sally Stewart, Stephen Barrington, Danny Brown, and Simon Longnight star.

If the film’s tagline, “Don’t Fall Asleep,” wasn’t already an indicator, Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street inspired the James Ross II for his feature debut. Shudder acquired the film ahead of its premiere earlier this year at the Overlook Film Festival.

The filmmaker said in a statement, “Parasomnia contains the DNA of many genre pieces influential to my development as a filmmaker. One thing I’ve wanted to explore involved drawing attention to some of life’s more mundane and involuntary aspects and making them scary, like sleeping.  When Wes Craven made A Nightmare on Elm Street, he brought forth an untapped goldmine of fear that resonates decades later due to the foundation of its scares being built on universal human experience – nightmares.  I’d like to bring a fresh perspective on the frightening aspects of sleep and take the audience on an immersive experience that will stay in their mind long after the credits roll.”

Don’t expect a retread, though, but the introduction to a new voice in horror as Parasomnia explores the terror of surrendering control to sleep.

The trailer below certainly packs in the nightmare fuel.

The 25th anniversary screening is FREE with Mass Mini Con admission and features a Q&A with writer/director Brad Anderson and writer/actor Stephen Gevedon, presented by Mass Mini Con and Contra Celluloid.

Mass Mini Con, a 2-day event celebrating the best in pop culture art, collectibles and physical media, commences September 12-13 this year at the Yawkey Theater, located at 1 Guest Street, Boston, MA.

That’s not terribly far from where Session 9 was filmed.

Anderson said in a statement, “I’m thrilled to be screening Session 9 in my old stomping ground, Boston. My career as a filmmaker started there back in the ’90s, where I worked concessions at the Brattle Theater, was an editing assistant at WGBH, and eventually made my first film, Next Stop Wonderland, a romantic comedy. Session 9 was a u-turn for me to a ‘darker‘ place. My old college friend Steve Gevedon and I, frustrated by mainstream horror,  wanted to tell a story that was genuinely chilling and unsettling.“

“We think Session 9 still resonates today because the place we filmed it was REAL – Danvers State Mental Hospital, North of Boston,” he continues. “The sinister stories that inspired the film came from actual ones we heard about Danvers. The crew and cast (of which Steve was one)  were genuinely spooked by the place, and we think that may have left its mark too. Danvers Mental Hospital was torn down years ago, but some spirits just won’t let you go. Session 9, a story of ghosts and possession, and a dark testament to a world forgotten by time, still lives up to its tagline: ‘Fear is a Place‘.” 

That tagline is front and center of a stunning new limited edition 19×24 screen printed poster by artist Daniel Danger that will be available at the event as well, further making this a “can’t miss” event for fans.

The 2001 gem follows a hazardous materials crew hired to clear out an abandoned mental asylum with a dark history. The job seems simple, but as they begin their work, strange discoveries and buried secrets begin to surface. The asylum’s walls whisper with the echoes of the past, and the crew members start to unravel—one by one.

As tensions rise and paranoia takes hold, the question remains: Is the horror inside the asylum a product of their own minds, or is something far more sinister at play?

The Lionsgate horror movie releases in theaters on October 2 and follows a medical mission that turns into a fight for survival against the colossal ancient snake, Boiúna.

Deep in the Amazon jungle, it’s Boiúna who decides who lives or dies.

The Titanoboa-inspired horror movie dangles a promising premise in a sparse subgenre, but it’s a project that Nelson admits he initially passed on until he developed the idea for Beware Boiúna with frequent collaborator Alan B. McElroy (Wrong Turn), who penned the script after fleshing out the story with Tony Giglio.

“We definitely have a giant snake in this movie, but I don’t want it to be a giant snake movie. I want it to be a great movie with a giant snake in it. That was where we started building from,” Nelson told Bloody FM’s Boo Crew podcast.

That started with the characters.

Kiana Madeira, Jessica Rothe, and Logan Marshall-Green Battle for Survival 

A medical mission goes catastrophically awry deep in the Amazon, prompting a harrowing standoff that awakens an ancient predator. It was important to the filmmaker that audiences get invested in the characters’ plight before unleashing Boiúna. That’s not to say the film is without intensity or action, but more that Nelson wanted to maximize fear.

He explains, “If I’m going to do a creature feature, it’s got to be grounded in something that we care about. Whether it’s the characters, the location, the strife in that part of the world, these things play a huge role in then, we’ll just say it, announcing or presenting you with this brand new, and it’s not even new, it’s an ancient legend, legendary creature, but this kind of new iconic snake. But it needs that. It needs that sort of presentation, that opening, to give what this is. Now you’re going to see these people put in front of this enormous, incredible, incredible monster.”

Going toe-to-toe with Boiúna are a trio of horror stalwarts in the Fear Street trilogy’s Kiana Madeira, Happy Death Day‘s Jessica Rothe, and Upgrade and Prometheus star Logan Marshall-Green. According to Nelson, his leads bring committed ferocity to this sweaty, grimy creature feature.

“Boy, we’ll start with Kiana,” Nelson says. “She was one of the first ones that I talked with. Just seeing her rugged strength. She had this vulnerability, but she’s so good at playing characters also that just don’t give any fucks.”

He also extends praise for Rothe’s performance, too. “Jessica brought a real keen eye, taking Alli to places that I think even later renditions of the script that were pretty close, she massaged those moments with her in the script to really give us a well-rounded version of who Alli is. That, of course, is very important for her and for what her character goes through. You need to be. I mean, honestly, she’s the audience’s eyes and ears.”

Opposite Maderia and Rothe is Marshall-Green as the not-so-nice guy Brennan who runs afoul of the missionaries before nature unleashes hell: “Then you have Logan, of course, who is just, dude, what he brings is the intensity level.”

Boiúna is Rooted in Titanoboa Lore and Research

The true star for horror fans, of course, is the giant predator slithering through the jungle and leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake. The eponymous creature, Boiúna, was born of research and Titanoboa mythology that Nelson, McElroy, and Giglio built upon for their killer snake. “God, 90% of the Amazon hasn’t even been discovered yet. So there’s so much mystery involved. Within all that mystery, our stories, legends, lore. Not only is there this stuff about spirits in the jungle, strange dolphin men and all this crazy stuff, but there are so many interesting stories about snakes.”

“What we did with Beware Boiúna is we did our research on all these different lores, and we came up with this idea of what another story could be about this lore. So it’s rooted. It’s based on all these stories that are out there. That was super exciting to read and learn about. That’s how we then blended the two to make our own mythology of something that’s real, that scientifically was found. So could it exist today? Almost like a cryptid. Like Bigfoot, it’s something that could exist in that 90% that we haven’t seen. But also rooted in the people who have the stories out there that live in the jungle or near it.”

The mythic predator Boiúna is female, and in her film, she’s the one who decides who lives and who dies. That makes encountering her all the more unpredictable, though likely to end in brutal evisceration.

Again, it all goes back to characters for Nelson: “The scariest things happen when you are with the characters. Not when you are showing big, broad things, not when you are with a monster. When you are right with the character, perched on their shoulders, seeing what they see right up in their face, looking at their eyes, peering through the trees and just seeing that movement that they are seeing at the same time, that’s when shit gets real.”

As for the snake itself, Nelson took design cues from nature itself, wanting to play it straight to avoid one annoying trope: “Even in ginormous blockbuster movies with huge budgets, snakes just always look wrong. There’s just something; we either see too much of them or they’re too anthropomorphized where their eyes are kind of set forward, and they kind of are given human features and the way that they act, and they look angry.”

The Cast and Crew of Beware Boiúna Trekked Deep into the Dangerous Jungle to Film

While Boiúna itself is mostly a VFX creature, Nelson employed plenty of practical tricks, like pulling a giant piece of HVAC through the jungle to emulate weighted movement or using giant printouts of the snake’s head for eye line. There’s also no shortage of practical carnage, either, including a rather gnarly vision of a botfly extraction from flesh.

Moreover, Nelson’s latest was shot in the actual jungle; the actors’ constant sheen of sweat isn’t makeup here.

He explains, “You have to get on a plane, and it’s a two-hour plane ride from Bogotá to Leticia, or you’ve got to get on a boat. That’s, I don’t know, a couple days, a few days, something like that. Getting there and transporting everybody and all the gear and everything down there was a huge logistical thing, but we made it happen. I have to give so much credit to our production team that put that together. The way their minds work, I’m glad that I just got to sit there and nod while they figured that out.”

“Granted, we’re not venturing right in the middle of the Amazon with hundreds of miles around us,” he continues. “We are going to these protected places, these reserves that you go deep in, and you’re going to find stuff. I think I was more scared going in being an outsider and not knowing what that meant. I have a newfound respect for the jungle. Holy buckets. I’m not as scared of it, I think, as I was maybe going in the first time. I think it was because you realize that you’re surrounded by life.

“It’s not that everything’s there to kill you. It’s that so much there could kill you.”

So much so that the production’s MVP was an animal wrangler who scouted for the ever-present danger, “a snake expert who was always 10 steps ahead of us, who was always searching, finding anything venomous, anything poisonous. He found anything that could have been potentially dangerous. He would take those things to his truck, and he would drive them far away, place them back in the jungle, and come back and continue doing his. He kept us alive.”

Bergholm teased of her maternal horror movie, “In Nordic countries, there’s a long-standing mythology of trolls living in the forests. A World War II Fairy Tale, which covers the infamous production of and reception to The Keep, will receive a limited theatrical release in October, followed by a TVOD release on Apple/Amazon. The Keep will also screen as a double feature for some showings.

For Uncovering Wolfen, Antenna eyes a limited theatrical release for 2027. Both films are currently available for booking via Antenna prior to their theatrical and digital releases.

Both documentaries are directed by Stewart Buck, who co-helms with Stéphane Piter on A World War II Fairy Tale.

“We at Antenna are obsessed with film history,” said Chief Acquisitions Officer Billy Ray Brewton. “Stewart has done such a remarkable job of really diving into the deepest recesses of how these films were made and, in doing so, has created the definitive histories of both projects.”

Released in 1983, Michael Mann’s The Keep was a notorious box office bomb, critically lambasted and all but forgotten for years, save for the fascination with Tangerine Dream’s iconic score. In recent years, the film has enjoyed a bit of a resurgence and is widely considered a cult classic, though director Michael Mann and many cast members refuse to acknowledge it.

Wolfen, on the other hand, was critical success but was overshadowed heavily by its flashier 1981 siblings An American Werewolf in London and The Howling. It’s also a trailblazer for socio-political horror, and the doc will explore that via the craftspeople who made it.

Home Bodies makes its World Premiere July 23, at 9:30 PM at Cinéma du Musée in Montreal, with the filmmakers and cast in attendance. 

An eerie new poster created by Justin Erickson of Phantom City Creative heralds the film’s premiere.

In the film, “Red and Blue, twins raised in total isolation by an automated house, live according to the rules set by Papa, a disembodied voice behind a locked door who provides food, shelter, entertainment, and order. Their carefully controlled world is disrupted by the arrival of Pal, an enigmatic humanoid stranger whose presence begins to fracture the only life the twins have ever known.” 

It’s a premise that calls another Canadian creeper to mind and has us intrigued: Pin.

Emma Ho, Ian Ho, and Ess Hödlmoser star.

Home Bodies is directed and produced by Casey Walker, who returns to Fantasia more than a decade after his horror-comedy A Little Bit Zombie screened at the festival in 2012. He’s since gone on to produce a number of defining Canadian genre films like In a Violent Nature, The Void, and Pyewacket.

“I started my career in Montreal and Fantasia has been part of my life ever since,” said Walker. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to return to where it all started and share Home Bodies on such a special anniversary of the festival.“

Karen Harnisch (Infinity Pool, Sleeping Giant) also produces. Executive producers are Todd Brown (The Raid, Mandy) and Chad Archibald (undertone).

The feature debut of writer/editor/director Brock Bodell, who previously edited the Fantasia title Ultrasound, makes its debut on Shudder on August 14.

In Hellcat, “Lena wakes up in a moving camper trailer with a horrifying wound. She’s warned by the driver that they have one hour to get to a doctor, or she’ll succumb to an unimaginably awful fate. As the pain sets in and reality begins to fray, who should really be afraid?”

Dakota Gorman (Natural Disasters) leads the cast that also includes Todd Terry (“Breaking Bad”), Liz Atwater (The Other People), Jordan Mullins (The Bikeriders), and James Austin Johnson (“Saturday Night Live”) in a voice role. Bodell also produces alongside Andrew Duensing and Nate Eggert.

Hellcat made its world premiere last summer at Fantasia. I wrote in my review, “Hellcat is a bit of a Trojan horror that defies easy classification, by design. Bodell’s sneaky debut feature is occasionally too sparse in its worldbuilding in its bid to preserve the mystery, but not enough to detract from the thrilling road thriller that transforms into a completely left-field type of horror we don’t get nearly enough of. The stripped-down tribute to a classic horror staple catches you off guard in more ways than one, marking Bodell as one to watch.”

In other words, there’s a lot more than meets the eye to Hellcat‘s simple infection setup, delivering plenty of surprises along its bumpy road of horrors.

The Curse of the Where Wolf hits shelves on August 7 from Encyclopocalypse Publications.

That coincides with the launch of a theatrical screening event in Houston, Texas, featuring a trio of seminal werewolf flicks turning 45 this year: The Howling on August 7, Wolfen on August 14, and An American Werewolf in London on August 21.

Each screening features a “werewolf in film” presentation as well as a book signing from Where Wolf author and River Oaks Theatre artistic director Rob Saucedo.

In the new graphic novel, “Being a werewolf sucks. Reporter Larry Chaney wanted to be a hero. Instead, he became a werewolf. Now, caught between incredible new powers and a desire to eat everything (and everyone) in sight, Larry must find a cure for his curse. Or die trying.”

“With Where Wolf, I wanted to tell a whodunit set in a furry convention, so the story was pretty contained within a very specific setting and genre. With Curse of the Where Wolf, I wanted to celebrate everything I love about the possibility of comic books. Curse of the Where Wolf is a funny book, in every sense of the phrase, but it’s also an earnest look at a person’s struggle to become a better version of themselves, especially when the alternative is to become a literal monster,” Saucedo says of Curse.

The original graphic novel was previously serialized as the first webcomic hosted on Fangoria before being collected by Encyclopocalypse Publications in 2023 and has already been optioned for film, podcast, and television development ahead of launch by producers James Fino (“The Freak Brothers” for Tubi, “Rick and Morty” for Adult Swim) and Charles Horak (First Date for Magnolia Pictures).

Expect Larry to find himself in even weirder situations in the 362-page full color sequel; Saucedo has provided Bloody Disgusting with exclusive art pages from the upcoming graphic novel that showcase lupine humor.

Something is Killing the Children was first published by BOOM! Studios in 2019 and tells the story of Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter from a mysterious organization more concerned with keeping the secret of monsters from the world than saving their victims.

Jordan Downey wrote the screenplay with Kevin Stewart (The Head Hunter).

For us he has the ability to be the next great genre filmmaker and we can’t wait to make the movie,” said James Harris of production company Tea Shop (Obsession, 47 Meters Down). Deborah Ann Woll rose to fame as the feisty vampire Jessica Hamby in HBO’s “True Blood” before becoming a fan favorite as Karen Page in Marvel’s “Daredevil” series. While horror fans recognize her from Escape Room and its sequel, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, the versatile actress has captured gamers’ attention as Laufey, Kratos’ wife in God of War: Ragnarök. She’ll receive her solo spinoff game in the upcoming God of War: Laufey. 

As for Jordan Downey, The Cycle will mark his long-awaited feature follow-up to the underseen gem, The Head Hunter, but the rising filmmaker also has sci-fi thriller Override on the way.

Junction Row will celebrate its World Premiere at Fantasia on July 28.

Watch a housing compound fall under siege from Lovecraftian creatures more dangerous than drug dealers in the trailer below.

Junction Row follows “Juno, a recovering addict who leaves a fringe housing compound for a better life, leaving her beloved Ruby behind. When she learns that Ruby has gone missing, Juno returns, only to find Junction Row has become a hotbed of criminal activity, but she encounters much more than menacing drug dealers on her mission to find Ruby.”

Isabelle stars as Juno, with Natalie Brown (FX’s The Strain) as Ruby.

The creature feature marks the feature debut by director Ashlea Wessel, who has directed festival-favorite shorts like 2018’s “Tick” and 2020’s “Weirdo”.

Wessel co-writes Junction Row with Clown in a Cornfield author Adam Cesare and Matt Serafini.

Katharine Isabelle is coming off a brief appearance in Kane Parsons’ Backrooms, and more recently appeared in holiday horror It’s a Wonderful Knife. The horror icon is arguably best known for her turn as the eponymous werewolf in Ginger Snaps and for her roles in American Mary and Freddy vs Jason.

Fantasia teases that Junction Row tells “a story where the fear of the unknown isn’t confined to what lies above, but what waits beneath.”

Unholy Night is set to make its World Premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival, where writer/director Michael Gabriele‘s horror short “Get Away” won the Gold Audience Award for Best International Short in 2023.

In Unholy Night, “Gino’s traditional family Christmas Eve turns into a bloody battle for survival when his long-dead grandma drops by and goes on a murderous rampage. Amid the chaos, Gino reunites with his ex and the dysfunctional duo must avoid his dead Italian relatives popping up all around the neighbourhood as they search for a way to get rid of these Yuletide revenants and survive his family Christmas.”

Marc Bendavid (“Dark Matter”), Shailene Garnett (“Shadowhunters”), Al Sapienza (“The Sopranos”), Ron Lea (“Orphan Black”), Toni Ellwand (“Hannibal”), Cristina Rosato (Mother!), Jacqueline Robbins (“A Series of Unfortunate Events”), and Joe Pingue (Antiviral) star.

Gabriele, making his feature debut, drew inspiration for his bloody holiday horror movie from growing up in an Italian family. “Unholy Night was crafted to deliver not only a captivating horror experience but also to serve as a poignant exploration of cultural complexities and the universal quest for identity and respect,” the filmmaker said in his director’s statement.
