The Beyond

14.) Cannibal Holocaust

A sort of grandfather to found footage, Ruggero Deodato’s formative cannibal horror drew ire and controversy even before it reached the UK. In native Italy, Deodato was arrested on obscenity charges because people believed Cannibal Holocaust was actually a snuff film rather than fictional. He was cleared, but the sexual violence, genuine animal violence, and graphic brutality meant his film was banned in Italy. It didn’t stop there, as Deodato’s film was banned in numerous countries, so you can bet it was successfully prosecuted and banned in the UK as well. It’s still never passed fully uncut in the UK, but did receive a more fully intact version in 2011. As of 2012, reportedly the film is still banned in Malaysia, Singapore, Iceland, Germany, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, India, Vietnam, Iran and New Zealand.
