This Dario Argento classic had no issues whatsoever during release in Italy and across Europe, but it was successfully prosecuted and banned in the UK as a Video Nasty. The irony is that the UK theatrical release shaved off a mere few seconds of the axe murder scene, and the video release was of the same cut. Even still, that still didn’t stop the DPP. The film even received heavy censorship in the US, where it was delayed theatrically until 1984 for trimming. Tenebrae finally passed censoring in 2003, and it was released uncut. Considering the nature of giallos, and the kills featuring garrotings, slashing, stabbings, and a ton of blood, that this one was effectively prosecuted isn’t surprising.
