44.) I Spit on Your Grave

Anyone familiar with this seminal rape-revenge horror won’t be surprised to find that this is one of the films responsible for kicking off the Video Nasties in the first place. Brutal and shocking, and a very lengthy gang rapes meant an obvious choice for the DPP. As such, it was successfully prosecuted and banned. In 2001, BBFC gave the film a passing certification after 7 minutes of cuts, namely the rape, were doled out. The film was subsequently released a few more times since, each one offering reframed scenes or smaller cuts, though never fully uncut. It wasn’t just controversial in the UK; I Spit on Your Grave remains prohibited from purchase in Ireland. It faced bans in Norway, Iceland, West Germany, and Canada as well.
